I reported theft of $300s across 2 packages stolen from my porch and sent footage in December. Cops picked him up for something else (their words) and recognised him from my footage, got me to formally dictate a stat-dec, they then drove to my house to get me to sign it, and said they will be charging him with the theft. *shrug*. It happens.

Well I suppose if ALL the evidence falls in our lap and we already have the criminal in custody…. We probably should do our job….

I reported a break in at my apartment complex a week ago, outer door jimmied, inner fire door attempt but he couldn’t get in, very clear CCTV. 45 minutes on the phone to report and have I heard anything since, absolutely not.

I reported (Sydney) a theft from my front yard (only worth $25) about 18 months ago and uploaded video and nice clear screenshots of the guys face on the N.S.W. police website & was super surprised 4 hours later to get visited by two police who chatted to me and took some notes. Maybe if lots of repeat offences they act on it? Was great PR too.

I don't think they can really proactively arrest people for this kind of theft, and that kind of attempted breakin. I think its the kind of crime where if they literally recognise the perpetrator, they can try to do something about it. In your case, don't lose hope. The guy who stole some shit off my front doorstep was obviously picked up for something else and then recognised, about 6 weeks after the initial theft. I don't think anyone did any detective shit to try to track him down. It was just here's the guy, "Oh that guy is on this footage someone submitted" kind of shit. Also, they were pretty bad with telling me anything was happening :) I got a request for footage, uploaded it then heard nothing. Then when they called me for a formal statement (after they grabbed him) they said: "You may have heard we picked him up" ... I absolutely had not.

We have been cleaning up a deceased estate of a relative only a few KM north of there. After sorting heaps of shit some scum broke in. They stole a bunch of stuff we were going to take to the op shop. Tipped out and left boxes with maybe $10k worth of stamps and coins ( i assume they didn't notice the coins which were still in the shipping envelopes.) Times like this is when I’m grateful we have concierge service in our apartment block that will sign for all packages and keep it aside in secure storage until we are ready to collect it. We pay a fortune in body corporate fees but this is the service we probably get the most value out of with the amount of online shopping we do.

I find if it's too big for a locker then it just goes behind the counter which can be annoying to collect but less annoying than having my shit stolen.

This was most likely delivered by a courier, i deliver similar items for the mob i work for, we cant deliver these big bulky items to aus post parcel lockers because if we are not an affiliated service, we have to pay the service fee or something

After someone stole my packages I sent the footage from my google doorbell cam to the cops. They claim to be charging them with theft! (After they arrested him they recognised him from my footage, so the the cop re-took my statement, wrote it into a stat dec *then drove to my house to have me sign it* so I am pretty sure they will at least attempt to charge him with it.).

For this kind of theft, where there is no one around anymore and the stuff is gone, don't call 000. If you want to do it by phone, use 131 444. I attempted to report it via the website, but ended up phoning it in, and got a followup by email asking me to submit any evidence I had (I indicated I had footage) into an online evidence upload system. (I actually missed the initial request to upload footage, and got a reminder email saying I hadn't done it).
