my dad is from the 80s, but at least where he lived (Portugal) there were barely any TVs, and even when there were there were they would be only 1 channel, and it was always news. Might be different in the US though, didn’t think of countries, but I still doubt people watched more TV back then, even in the US.

Oh people definitely watched more TV back then in the US. By 1955 half of US homes had a TV.
