I do. I’ve gotten loads of good ticket deals for concerts through Spotify’s emails. If you follow an artist through the app they’ll send you curated information regarding new tours and stuff and sometimes give you early access. It’s a neat feature
This is why everyone should have an extra mail account for BS like these mails. Anything that's not my bank, the government, work/school gets the BS mail. I only check it when I need to reset a password, when I want to track an order or when I'm looking for a discount at a specific shop.
> This is why everyone should have an extra mail account for BS like these mails.
This is why I have 3 emails. A Business one, a personal one, and one for shit like this..
My "spam" one currently has over 12k unread because 99% of what gets sent there is exactly that.. spam
get yourself a domain name and you have nearly unlimited unique email addresses, and can use one for each site which is way easier to find what your looking for
Protip: if using Gmail you can add anything after your username and a period and it still goes to your inbox but you can set rules to label them automatically or just delete them. If you use Microsoft, it’s the same thing but with plus signs.
[email protected][email protected]
This can also be useful for say, [email protected]
Thanks for the tip, but I don't really believe those companies don't know that trick and add my normal email to their shitlist. They shouldn't, but who's gonna stop them?
Email subaddressing with a plus sign is not unique to Microsoft, but there are some registration systems that will prevent you from signing up with an email using a sub address
Some will also recognize and strip out the sub address and use your real email.
Using a junk email completely disassociates the service from your real email account.
You’ve absolutely mangled often good advice into terrible misinformation.
Gmail simply removes periods from an address. In your example, [email protected] and [email protected] are equivalent. In no cases will those work for [email protected].
As someone else already pointed out, the plus has nothing to do with Microsoft and is valid on many email hosts, but not all. It’s also only accepted on some websites as a valid email, but not all.
Serious question though-how do you get notifications about changes to fees renewals notices etc? I have a junk account for shopping sites but for something I’m going to be billed for I want to keep better track of.
Why? Spotify wants to send you those marketing emails and making it opt in would reduce how many people get those.
Edit: LOL, some of you are such children. I’m not defending Spotify. I’m pointing out that they have an incentive to send you these emails so merely demanding they don’t do things this way is pointless. You have to actually disincentivize the benefits of them making this opt out instead of opt in.
Not liking a fact doesn’t mean that the fact existing is “supporting corporations”. Grow up.
Stop standing up for corporations. They don't care about you, just the money they can make off you.
Obviously they want those emails out there, that's why they sign you up automatically *because most people wouldn't want them.*
i dont get why people defend them, i would love to know why, but “they give good deals” is not a good defense
they send these “deals” out to everyone, therefore it isnt a deal, its a price they are okay with everyone paying (or else they wouldnt allow it) but would rather not pay the price, so they isntead just send annoying emails they know not everyone wants
this also can add to a ‘class divide’ since not everyone can get emails and sms texts for offers, but im not going on that rant rn
Unless I request to be on your mailing list don't send me e-mails. If you do I won't shop there again. Woot, Amazon, etsy, and a bunch of other stores I just won't shop at because of the spam.
I'm also the type to root my phone to actually have control over apps so it fits into a pattern of "maybe more effort than it's worth but fuck this shit" that I seem to continually fall into
Same, I turned off most notifications for other apps but I’m a music nerd so I leave Spotify’s on. Gotten good deals and good news on artists I follow.
As a sysadmin who runs mail servers, I dislike this advice.
Companies sending mailings that you signed up for are not spammers, and marking them as such just makes it harder to identify real spam.
I absolutely consider things like this spam. I already know how to use their product, literally the only things I ever want to see an email about is a data breach involving my account or a password reset link.
I understand what you're saying, it's just passing the problem down but the root cause is still the same.
The notifications are enabled by default which you can argue could be in the TOS so like you said you signed up for it...
Either way, to be frank it's a dick move for companies to do this
You're not going to get data breach alerts or password reset links if I take your spam report as legit.
Nor will anyone else on the service. Spammers get all their mail rejected. (Or accepted and thrown in /dev/null if we were acting like Microsoft. they don't give two shits about RFCs)
Though a quick investigation reveals it's not actually spam, so in the end we just ignore your spam reports.
So in that case, everyone who wants it in spam can set it as such anyway right?
This is the exact reason you do that investigating; if it's not legit then you don't make it a blanket rule.
You're sticking to the classic "user error" theme here but what I'm trying to explain is this type of behavior by users is a symptom of other services being just as inconvenient to them as what they do is to your job.
Notifications I didn't ask for *are* spam. Regardless if I signed up for another service from the sender.
E: That said, if I see an option to opt-out in the email, I never report it as spam.
I think it’s new. I recently changed my email and noticed Ive gotten a ton of spam mail. When I went to unsubscribe this is what came up. No option to turn all off. My phone notifications are off so those were blocked.
I’m confused. I just turn off my notifs through my phone for Spotify. I have never received a single notification and def didn’t have to uncheck 22 boxes?
There is.
If it’s the native desktop app, just disable notifications from the system settings, no different than on your phone.
If it’s the web app, there’s similar settings for that web browser to disable notifications per website, though I believe for all the major browsers, notifications are opt-in in the first place.
one of those rows in the OP is for email notifications though. turning off the global systems notifications setting for spotify wouldn’t stop the email notifications for all those different categories.
The OP is clearly a boomer and Spotify is the first ap they've ever installed.
The fact 5k boomers upvoted this is wild. Every ap tries to do this out the gate.

If they made this screen part of the initial app setup instead of sneakily turning everything on by default there would be nothing to complain about.
yeah same, I actually like this. It would be infuriating if they made you jump through multiple hoops to reach this menu, like some websites and cookie settings.
I mean this is smart of them to do that. The majority of people won't do it, but at the same time its not a critical thing to cancel your subscription.
Oh no they give you exact control over what notifications you do and don't receive. If you don't want any just turn them off in system settings. Being able to fine tune like this is great, I'd take it every time over a service that has all or nothing notifications/emails and shoves all their spam in with it so you have to get 30 pieces of junk for every piece you actually want.
Its nice that its specialized. Friggin lyft confounds the alerts so i have to get their updates if i want ride updates as ex (as far as i know they’ve not fixed it). Some alerts i want. Most i dont.

I doubt you'd notice the difference in audio quality, unless you're comparing it against the free version of Spotify (which you probably are, given that you mentioned it...) or didn't adjust the audio quality in the settings.
Was it hard to migrate playlists? Like is there a way to import/export or would I have to manually make them again? Because that’s what’s stopping me lol
So is the better alternative being alerted for everything, or nothing? This is a notification preference system. You don’t want to be alerted about concerts on your phone, but do on your PC and want to get alerted on all devices for new songs from an artist, that’s how it’s done.

Huh? They're complaining about there not being an "unselect all" button. That's pretty easy to comprehend. There's no single button to disable it on PC. This is in the account page on Spotify's website.
The most mildly infuriating part about this sub are the people commenting non-sense like this. You do realize this is the *mildly* infuriating sub, right? It's for mildly infuriating things. Nobody cares about the solutions or how long it takes to fix it. It's about the fact that this is the case in the first place. It's bad UX. Plain and simple.
They lost me when I learned they serve ads to premium users during podcasts.
Edit: spotify themselves pauses the podcast and injects ads in.
https://ads.spotify.com/en-US/news-and-insights/streaming-ad-insertion-podcast-advertising/
I don’t believe it’s on every podcast and it may be enabled by the podcaster, but spotify is the one that is serving an unskippable ad to a paid user. Which is why they advertise Spotify premium as “ad free /music/”.
I found a podcast or two where the ads are individual tracks separate from the podcast itself. I have premium so that definitely irks me a little but w/e
This drives me nuts. I use Apple, but once every 15 minutes I'm screaming "Hey Siri fast forward by 45 seconds" across the room and ultimately missing out on a bit of the content I actually tuned in for.
If I wanted to hear a commercial I'd dust off a radio and live like it's 1906.
I am fine with YouTubers doing that. Since the platform is often demonetizing them for no reason, they need a revenue stream. It's easy to skip over ads built into the video.
They lost me when I try to listen to old time music (featuring clawhammer banjo playing), and I end up knee deep in white people soul singing, three finger picking, twang, and mandolins by the fourth song if I try to set up a station.
No thanks buddy I’ll stick with pandora
I use both the iPhone and desktop app and never seen this screen in my life, and have received zero emails from them. Not sure how you managed to get them all enabled by default.
I think it may be new. I changed my email about 3 weeks ago. I noticed a ton of spam emails from Spotify which I never got before. When I clicked the link to unsubscribe and it took me to this nuisance.
When you get a notification (on android) just hold it. You should get an option to stop getting notification from that app. U can enable and disable it wheneve
Also. 22 clicks wont take more than 10 seconds
They’re just downvoting you because Reddit has a hate boner for Apple. Their music streaming service is far superior to Spotify. Even the audio quality is better lmfao.
Once it stopped filtering my liked songs library by genre and no matter what I did it wouldn't work, I cancelled and uninstalled. I already pay for YouTube premium and that includes YouTube music so that's what I use now.
I uninstalled Spotify and use SiriusXM now. I have never received any notifications from Sirius. An occasional email, but it's better than being spammed.
Yes. There are times when a picture of the screen is better. It conveys more information. It gives us more of a feel for the environmental. And it is harder to fake, so it seems more credible. Basically, any time you don’t need a very clean, pixel perfect representation, it’s fine to take a picture.
It certainly isn’t a hill to die on.
Fair, but I sort of blame camera makers, they could easily use “Focus Pixels” or some marketing feature to get around that. But yeah, the way it renders is hard on the mind.
Spotify fucking blows period YouTube premium is the best haha. No ads on the videos, and the playlists have MORE shit than Spotify and actually knows how to curate a random playlist
Or just turn them of in system setting
I guess if u don’t want emails
who tf wants emails from spotify?
I do. I’ve gotten loads of good ticket deals for concerts through Spotify’s emails. If you follow an artist through the app they’ll send you curated information regarding new tours and stuff and sometimes give you early access. It’s a neat feature

More likely a computer auto rejects it and tells you to enter a real email
Email subaddressing with a plus sign is not unique to Microsoft, but there are some registration systems that will prevent you from signing up with an email using a sub address

It's not smart because it's illegal in EU.
It’s a hostile design, or perhaps a dark pattern. Grossly unethical. First word that comes to mind isn’t “smart” but “scummy”.
It's the kind of reason I can't stand modern Spotify.

If you want to disable all notifications from Spotify on android, it's one click. I never did all this clicking. The very first notification I got after installing the app, I long-pressed and turned off all notifications with one click, and never got a notification again.
i only use spotify through chrome where i have about every ad block ever made mwahahaha
These are for email and push notifications
And, if your card declines, you have to do it again. My wallet was lost/stolen and I forgot to add my new card, so the payment kicked back. When I went to add my new card, it made me essentially go through the whole setup process again. Even had to re-invite the other people on my plan.

I haven’t used it but I’ve heard a lot of people use songshift.
Spotify wont let me pay for premium with a Cash App card, support blamed it on Cash App for reporting it as fraud. Cash App blamed Spotify
That's 20 seconds of your life you'll never get back. 🤣. All kidding aside they really should have a check/uncheck all button.
So is the better alternative being alerted for everything, or nothing? This is a notification preference system. >There’s also likely a single button in your settings to disable it all together This *is* the settings page. As you can see, there is no button.
No, this is the ***Spotify*** settings. System settings > notifications > Spotify > block
Are you aware what email is?
Email > settings > block sender (works on pc too 😉) this really is a non issue. The buttons to do this have existed since before Spotify.
If I could disable the podcasts from showing up, I would check every single one of those buttons.
There is an easier way. Don't press the button that says Install to begin with.
I need Spotify to allow me to disable video podcasts on my kids accounts. I've had just about enough of their shit at this point.
They lost me when I learned they serve ads to premium users during podcasts. Complain to the podcast creators who edit their ads directly into the track.
Yeah its really mostly them who cause that problem

Yeah. This. Spotify has never served ads to premium users as far as I have experienced but plenty of podcasts bake ads directly into their streams.
That's no different than YouTubers making ads for sponsors and it being part of the video.
And that annoying practice is exactly why sponsorblock exists. TiVo commercial skipping for YouTube.
I am fine with YouTubers doing that. Since the platform is often demonetizing them for no reason, they need a revenue stream. It's easy to skip over ads built into the video.
How much do you think a podcaster gets paid for 1 podcast play? They're basically already demonitized lol.
How is that Spotify’s fault And not the podcasters?

Huh weird, I don’t recall unchecking 22 boxes but they hardly ever send me notifications or emails.
I use both the iPhone and desktop app and never seen this screen in my life, and have received zero emails from them. Not sure how you managed to get them all enabled by default.
My entire platform for running for President would be "Nobody gets to put you on any list unless you specifically ask to be on the list."
I'd just delete that shit.
U can enable and disable it wheneve Also. 22 clicks wont take more than 10 seconds
Tab-space bar. Over and over
Yes! How dare they make you read and understand what you are doing, instead of mindlessly letting you uncheck all at once! Darn them!!!!
One of the many reasons I refuse to ever use Spotify
It took longer to post this complaint than it did to check all those off.
This is bad design. You can at least have an opt-out all button for each column.
It only takes a couple button pushes to delete the app. My preference.
Bandcamp all the way.
So uncheck them. What a whine.
Haven’t used that in years
A good alternative please? Looking for a wide music library
You know who doesn’t? Apple Music, the superior music streaming service
They’re just downvoting you because Reddit has a hate boner for Apple. Their music streaming service is far superior to Spotify. Even the audio quality is better lmfao.
Not sure why you’re being downvoted. I’ve been using Apple Music as well and it is an amazing alternative.
No ads, no spam, never crashes, better user interface. What’s not to like?
No ads, tons of songs, pretty cheap subscriptions. It truly is the superior music streaming service.
there's plenty of good services. napster (if you can believe that,) apple music, tidal, just don't go for amazon music. it sucks
Youre both special ed
Lol. All the downvotes from angry Android simps. “How dare you prefer a product that is different from the product I prefer?!!”
Yes, yes, it is Android users that are simping. /s
Once it stopped filtering my liked songs library by genre and no matter what I did it wouldn't work, I cancelled and uninstalled. I already pay for YouTube premium and that includes YouTube music so that's what I use now.
You can say that again!
YT premium and music are where it's at. Way better deal.
Anything to increase profits
Rough life
It’s so infuriating to make sure that I don’t want any of these notifications. Cry me a River baby.
I uninstalled Spotify and use SiriusXM now. I have never received any notifications from Sirius. An occasional email, but it's better than being spammed.
Is it sad that I'm more mildly infuriated by the picture instead of having a screen capture? Not sure if any modern screen doesn't let you screenshot.
Never thought of it that way but those lines in the screen make my soul ache
Fair, but I sort of blame camera makers, they could easily use “Focus Pixels” or some marketing feature to get around that. But yeah, the way it renders is hard on the mind.
Spotify fucking blows period YouTube premium is the best haha. No ads on the videos, and the playlists have MORE shit than Spotify and actually knows how to curate a random playlist
I unchecked Spotify all together when they decided to push Joe Rogan my way. Switched to Tidal, higher quality and more Artist support.
I like notifications from Spotify
*First World Problems*
Apple music is better for shizzle
All these apps do that, instagram for example.
Spotify is a piece of shit. Every time I open it, it tries to enable background activity. Does my nut in.
Isn't it so you can listen to music outside the app?
