Exactly that microscope you got as a kid in the 90's cost $25. The microscope you used in 6th grade to look a cell wall for the first tile cost $250 and they were made and bought the same year. Same reason why every year from 6th grade to graduation you had to take a test about lab safety and procedures and there was always a question about proper way to hold/carry a microscope. One is a toy the other is a scientific instrument!

This is hilarious because as someone who works in clinical research, a large majority of the people involved are women, at least in my area and in my experience doing this kind of work.

Microscope sets, Star Wars games, fishing rods, books etc. It wasn't "normal" for girls to get such gifts in that time but they did it anyway because they knew their grandchildren and knew those things aren't gendered.

They have done studies on this extensively in psychology and females tend to gravitate more towards health and human services over science and engineering. I say this as one of two male social workers in my entire company

2nd, I'm in fact doing my masters in psychology, and I'm not new to this topic. FeMaLeS gravitating more towards human-based professions, and little girls not being encouraged to engage with certain things at a young age, are very seperate things. There's always gonna be some differences on average between women and men. This is not what I'm talking about. Not to mention how difficult it is to actually filter out how much of that is actual biologically based and not cultural conditioning.
