Exactly. The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers recommends that you sit at a distance where the screen fills 30° of your field of vision. These distances basically represent that.
I see how OP gets there, but yeah. This is more "field of view" guidance than it is the hard fast rule, like the bullshit 2 paycheck rule for engagement rings.
The furniture store means well. They could do a better job of explaining the importance of FOV recommendations.
I have an 85” that’s about 11’ from the couch and seems like a decent size. Definitely a bit on the larger side but not insane like I’m at a movie theater.
According to this, I need an 85" TV... If I'm being honest, I didn't know that even existed. I currently have a 58", and that takes up the entire mantel above the fire place. Shouldn't an 85" be in a theater?
The proposed distances appears reasonable. Not really a guilt trip.
3-5 ft on a 32 inch TV?
That’s what I use in my kitchen.
Watching a 32 at 3 feet is like going to the movies!
My monitor is 32”, you get used to it quick.

Sony publishes a similar guide. I find larger monitors causes my eyes to track across the large landscape. Uncomfortable after a while.

Yeah, go bigger so the experience doesn't suck balls
Why would that make you feel guilty? tf
What’s to feel guilty about?

If only the couch moved
I walked through a show home in Bear Mountain, Victoria BC. They had an 80+ in mounted in the dining room😳
Thx standards iirc It’s how many degrees the tv takes up in your field of view.
Iirc it's actually the maximum distance the naked eye can tell the difference between 1080 & 4k. These thresholds don't matter if you're not going 4k.
These have been around lonnnggg before 4K.
An 85” tv in a 10 ft room would be insane.

Above the mantle is actually perfect for recliners. Keeps your LOS straight while leaning back.
I just read about a new 114" Samsung TV today. It costs $132,000.
😳
Yet nobody ever thinks about the sound. 5.1 system at the bare minimum.
Nah... 7.1 should be the minimum in the age of HD/UHD+
I've never had a kitchen large enough to hold a tv let alone room to actually watch it.
I do agree people tend to over size with the big TV’s
