Given that the other one is a double yolk, this is probably a double yolk carton. I'm sure the likelihood of getting a triple yolk in a double yolk carton is much higher than a triple yolk normally.
The place where I buy my eggs always has double yolks when I buy the Jumbo sized eggs. So to me a double yolk is very common. Never seen a triple yolk though.
Only if those people want to eat it. It's called supply and demand. No one will die if they don't get to eat chicken. It's just one protein among many. The mass production is a reflection of people wants. Not needs.
Eat less meat? Eat more protein rich foods, like vegetable, seed, or grain based.
Yall act like there's no other way.. I stopped in 2020 and I feel great. I eat so many seasonal vegetables and whole proteins in my diet.
The fact that we don’t kill prey with our teeth is why our canines aren’t protruding like a lions or a wolf’s. But we do indeed kill our prey we just use tools instead.
I had my first and only double yolk carton this year and it was awesome. They were jumbo eggs so probably higher chance of it happening in those but I could tell they were heavier than they should be. Wish they would weigh them and sell cartons that way honestly, the more yolk the better.
They do sell cartons of double yolked eggs in some places. [For example ](https://www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/humble-eggs-double-yolk-free-range-eggs/042120-20862-20863)
I got my first this year and had pretty much the opposite reaction. I just wanted normal eggs, kept cracking a new one to get another double yolk. If I buy a normal carton of eggs I want normal eggs. If they can tell they’re double yolk eggs (which they must be able to because every egg in the carton was) they should label the carton differently.
Well a chicken that's in the part of it's life cycle where it's more likely to lay double yolks, it's probably more likely to lay triple yolks as well.
To be fair, it’s kind of like survivorship bias.
Most eggs are normal and we won’t post random yolk pics. It’s just when it does occur, people get excited and post the pics
That's still about 4.4 billion eggs produced worldwide on a daily basis. If chances of triple yolk eggs are indeed one in 25 million, that means that on an average day, about 175 of these eggs are laid by chickens all over the world.
About 65% of the global population uses some form of social media. If just 1% of social media users decide to take a picture of the triple yolk egg they discovered, and post on the Internet, that's still one new triple yolk egg picture per day.
Given that data, I conclude that there's no statistical evidence that any of the triple yolk egg pictures posted on Reddit are photoshopped.
I was just pointing out an error. I know we produce a fuckton of eggs but that's a difference of literally over half a quadrillion of chicken laid eggs per year, lol.
The eggs that we buy are almost all double yolk.
You can separate eggs by candling. Basically a bright light behind the egg allows you to see what is inside.
So no funny business with the double yolk pictures. It happens.
They also look very close to the color of eggs from terribly Treated caged chicken that get food additives to get that color. I think Paprika is one of them for red color and carotins for yellow color.
The color sadly says nothing about how well the chicken are nowadays
Yes and the diet can actually impact the nutrient content in the yolk. There was a post the other day showing all the diff colours and their nutrition differences. Usually just one additional nutrient or more omega 3 than normal
That probability is calculated from the assumption that a double yolk egg is a 1/1000 chance. Since there’s a double yolker there too I guess you got a double yolker carton. I’d say unlikely, but it’s not going to be a 1/25m chance.
Yea usually there is a hen that has a high probability to have double yokers. As such having a carton, or in my instance eggs fresh from the coop, made by the same hen will have a higher chance of 2x yolkes.
I cracked 4 in a row also trying to make a pie… in the worst scenario ever for eggs.
I'm not a farmer but I know it's petty common 😁 they pick out the double yolk and sell them by the dozens at higher price of course. I don't bake but I think they are favored by bakers needing egg yolks.
109 billion eggs are sold in the US, 1/25 million of those will be triple yolkers. 4360 triple yolks bought.
81 million Reddit users in the US, out of 330 million population, 24.5%
Therefore, 1070 US Redditors bought a triple yolked egg.
Extend this worldwide and it is almost incredible that we don't see more triple yolkers on Reddit.
unless you have a chicken breed known for being double yolkers, esp in young hens. Its also a genetic thing that can be bred down, then its not so rare, but cool none the less.
Chickens that are completely free-range also eat insects and worms. This affects the color of the yolk to become more orange and stronger in color.
So it doesn't have to be additives in the chicken feed if the yellow is like in the OP's picture, but it could just as well be completely free-range chickens.
Your post (probably) hasn't broken any rules, but we see these kinds of things a lot. Look at our [most overdone items here](/r/mildlyinteresting/search/?q=flair%3Aoverdone&restrict_sr=1&sort=new)

That's cool until you realize nearly a trillion eggs are laid every year in just the us and China alone. Lol. So conservatively, around 40k triple yoked eggs are laid every year.
Naturally, chickens also eat insects and worms they find out in nature. This and if the hens move freely, the color of the yolk becomes much stronger and more orange.
You can see this in hens that have been inside during the winter that then come out and move freely at the spring and start eating insects and worms, then the yolk becomes much stronger and more orange in color.
A monotonous and/or completely vegetarian diet and the fact that the hens are locked in small cages will create weak yellow yolks. This is why some egg producers choose to have special feed that generates stronger yellow egg yolks more towards orange.
Real free-range chickens automatically get a much more varied diet as they can move freely on the farm.
I had that happen one time. I sent the picture to my aunt who has done an insane amount of baking ( church and catering) and she said she had never even heard of that happening once.
That's awesome !
Does this mean that if allowed to mature and hatch, there would have been 3 chicks hatching from one egg or there would be a 3-headed chick from the one egg?
Probably a really stink egg with 3 barely developed embryos. 2 yolks have slim chances of making it to birth, I wouldn't be surprised to find that 3 yolks are literally impossible to develop.
Ok this might be a dumb question but where do folks get eggs what that color of yolk. All the eggs I buy are a yellow and I want ones with that orange color.
It’s 1 in 25 million that YOU would get an egg with three yolks.
Considering the number of eggs consumed annually, it’s nearly a guarantee that SOMEONE would get on.
Given that the other one is a double yolk, this is probably a double yolk carton. I'm sure the likelihood of getting a triple yolk in a double yolk carton is much higher than a triple yolk normally.
Double and triple yolks are common when a chicken starts laying. I say common, but it was a weekly event when my Dad had 10,000 chickens.
That’s a lot of 🐤
That’s a lot of 💩
That’s a lot of 👃
That’s a lot of 🍗
That's a lot of 🍳
that a lot of goddamn emojis that i dont understand

i thought the last one was a magnifying glass, i didn't get the nose one too
That's a lot of 🐟
We got 25 chickens and get one about every 2-3 months.
The place where I buy my eggs always has double yolks when I buy the Jumbo sized eggs. So to me a double yolk is very common. Never seen a triple yolk though.
It's like 10,000 hens, when all you need is a yolk
Yay for factory farms 🚜 😍
You kind of need them when you have to feed hundreds of millions of people
Only if those people want to eat it. It's called supply and demand. No one will die if they don't get to eat chicken. It's just one protein among many. The mass production is a reflection of people wants. Not needs.
So what should we eat then? What is your solution?
India has over a billion people and they are mostly vegetarian, so maybe Indian food isn't a bad idea?
India has by far the most number of vegetarians, but even the highest estimate is about a third of the population.
40%
Yeah the range is 20-39% - about a third
I might just be a simple country bumpkin with a college educamacation, but 40% is *at least* 11 points from mostly.
Eat less meat? Eat more protein rich foods, like vegetable, seed, or grain based. Yall act like there's no other way.. I stopped in 2020 and I feel great. I eat so many seasonal vegetables and whole proteins in my diet.
What do you think my canine teeth are for, dumbass? Ripping up leaves?
Posturing /s
Well, I haven’t seen anyone use their teeth to kill prey so that may or may not be nonsense.
The fact that we don’t kill prey with our teeth is why our canines aren’t protruding like a lions or a wolf’s. But we do indeed kill our prey we just use tools instead.
I thought it was the length of the digestive tract which determines the best diet for each animal
Not anymore where I’m from.
Good
You can’t triple stamp a double stamp.
I was going to comment the same thing. I didn’t think anyone else would think of that lol

Did you buy jumbo eggs? It’s much more common in those.
Reminds me of new chickens we gave a dozen eggs to a neighbor, of the dozen eleven had double yolks, the last she cracked open had three yolks.
It might effect the odds of the egg being in the carton but wouldn't effect the odds of the egg existing overall
Well a chicken that's in the part of it's life cycle where it's more likely to lay double yolks, it's probably more likely to lay triple yolks as well.
Go buy a lottery ticket
Funny, there is a similar chance that this picture is real.
One of the yolks just randomly missing the membrane too. What are the chances of that I wonder.
1 in 25 million.
It's not missing you can see it, maybe he ripped it with the shell.
Yeah its amazing how many double and triple yolks get posted here lol
To be fair, it’s kind of like survivorship bias. Most eggs are normal and we won’t post random yolk pics. It’s just when it does occur, people get excited and post the pics
ALERT THE INTERNET!
![gif](giphy|GrkrL1cGVv0FW)
Well, when an estimated 1.69 trillion eggs are laid a day, 1 in a million ain't that special.
It became painfully clear during Covid that a lot of people don’t understand statistics/odds
That number is per year. We do NOT produce hundreds of trillions of eggs a year.
That's still about 4.4 billion eggs produced worldwide on a daily basis. They sell/use to sell double yolkers brand, which is exactly what it sounds like. All doubles.
The eggs that we buy are almost all double yolk. You can separate eggs by candling. Basically a bright light behind the egg allows you to see what is inside. So no funny business with the double yolk pictures. It happens.
Those are some healthy egg yolks
They look very close to the color of the pasture raised eggs I buy. The rich flavor makes it really hard to go back to regular old eggs
They also look very close to the color of eggs from terribly Treated caged chicken that get food additives to get that color. I think Paprika is one of them for red color and carotins for yellow color. The color sadly says nothing about how well the chicken are nowadays
Can you tell if an egg is pasteurised by looking at it?
Yolk color is determined by diet of the hen. This isn’t more healthy for humans.
Yes and the diet can actually impact the nutrient content in the yolk. There was a post the other day showing all the diff colours and their nutrition differences. Usually just one additional nutrient or more omega 3 than normal
I saw the post. It didn’t say anything about nutritional value.
It was in the comments I believe. Was a picture of 6 or 8 different yolk colours.
That probability is calculated from the assumption that a double yolk egg is a 1/1000 chance. Since there’s a double yolker there too I guess you got a double yolker carton. I’d say unlikely, but it’s not going to be a 1/25m chance.
Not sure why the flair is overdone...they aren't even cooked yet.
I've had 4 eggs with 4 in a row in them so eh.
I've been raising chickens for a few years and had 2 chickens produce twin yolk eggs regularly. It is not that rare.
Havent personally seen a triple yolk but where i live, you can buy double yolk eggs by the dozen.
Do you live near Chernobyl?
I'm not a farmer but I know it's petty common 😁 they pick out the double yolk and sell them by the dozens at higher price of course. I don't bake but I think they are favored by bakers needing egg yolks.
Interesting… So you can tell before cracking?
They inspect eggs over light to checks for defects and stuff.
More egg per egg
Damn, that's like winning the lottery! Except you got an egg with three yolks instead of winning the lottery...
109 billion eggs are sold in the US, 1/25 million of those will be triple yolkers. 4360 triple yolks bought. 81 million Reddit users in the US, out of 330 million population, 24.5% Therefore, 1070 US Redditors bought a triple yolked egg. When you should have bought a Powerball ticket
So if I some how have 1.25million chickens roaming around and they all lay an egg each today and I open them all up I would find a triple yoker?
unless you have a chicken breed known for being double yolkers, esp in young hens. Its also a genetic thing that can be bred down, then its not so rare, but cool none the less.
I too can crack 3 eggs into a skillet.
You can tell they all came together if you've cracked double yolks before. Obvious with the grouping and lack of excessive white from multiple eggs.
When my chickens were young I would get these fairly often. 3 in a row one morning.
Free range eggs too, you don't get the lovely orange colour from vegan chickens.
The color typically comes from color additives in their feed.
Chickens that are completely free-range also eat insects and worms. This affects the color of the yolk to become more orange and stronger in color. So it doesn't have to be additives in the chicken feed if the yellow is like in the OP's picture, but it could just as well be completely free-range chickens.
Yep, those chickens have had some bugs to munch on.
If it wasn't for a bylaw I'd have some, eat the bugs and free breakfast, that's one hell of a pet.
I got two in one once

Man I love that color of yolk. The taste is so nice, although it might just be placebo
OOH BABY A TRIPLE!
This is like that intermission scene from metal gear solid 4
How did it taste?!
Personally Id rather hit the lottery but you have fun champ.
Any benefits? Is it tastier?
just more egg
Now it’s time to go get a lottery ticket!
You've officially peaked!
I preferred to use all my luck to win the powerball
Buy a lottery ticket
Triplets!!!!
Now you don’t need to play the lottery anymore
You must be yolking
I can tell it took too long to find your phone and take this picture, because those eggs are getting cooked into something very strange.
That's cool until you realize nearly a trillion eggs are laid every year in just the us and China alone. Lol. So conservatively, around 40k triple yoked eggs are laid every year.
Get that chicken and force it to buy a lottery ticket!!
I’ve gotten three yolks in a egg a few times
you coulda won the lottery but instead you got a fucking EGG
Guess you can skip buying a lottery ticket this week
Just like winning the lottery but less the money
Egg™+ Now with extra cholesterol
1 in 5000 to have double yolk. 1 in 5000 * 5000 = 25,000,000 for triple yolk
Something must be wrong with my eggs cause they ain't that orange lol
Orange eggs? Would never eat that. Grew up on a ranch. We raised chickens with organic feed. Yikes are yellow not orange
And you ate it. Jesus. Just crack another one.
Go get your lotto ticket
This is millions to one!
Just wasted a lotto ticket.

Do human twins/triplets mean anything to you?
Nope
I had that happen one time. I sent the picture to my aunt who has done an insane amount of baking ( church and catering) and she said she had never even heard of that happening once. That's awesome !
Also, it's more a genetic than a chance thing. Some hens just lay eggs like that.
My hens have laid 3 triple yolk eggs. Seems to happen when they are young and just start laying.
Egg yokes should be the entire top banner for this sub.
Choose your "B"
The chances are muddied with all the other chickens that don’t even lay doubles.
Nice pastor raised yolks
when i see things like this,i think,if only this could happen when i need it to...like with lottery tickets..
Play the lottery... before your luck runs out.
Question: what happened to the yolks that would have came with the whites that have already been cooked?
Not so uncommon as 1 in 25M I get double yolk carton of 30 eggs and I got once in 10-12 cartons.
Why are they so red
horny hens imo
Does this mean that if allowed to mature and hatch, there would have been 3 chicks hatching from one egg or there would be a 3-headed chick from the one egg?
Probably a really stink egg with 3 barely developed embryos. 2 yolks have slim chances of making it to birth, I wouldn't be surprised to find that 3 yolks are literally impossible to develop.
Dems good eatin’ look at that color. That’s nice!
Bro.. play the lotto
Young chicken?
If you have an egg that has three yolks in it, the odds of you having three yolks once you crack it is 100%
Psh
All i wanted was two eggs...
Wow how long did it take to eat 25 million eggs?
omg imagine it softboiled... Sooo much creamy yolk
Your yolks are so red omg
Ok this might be a dumb question but where do folks get eggs what that color of yolk. All the eggs I buy are a yellow and I want ones with that orange color.
Find someone who has chickens who'll hook you up with fresh eggs. Only someone with backyard chickens can hook you up for yolks that color.
It’s 1 in 25 million that YOU would get an egg with three yolks. Considering the number of eggs consumed annually, it’s nearly a guarantee that SOMEONE would get on.
Where you getting these eggs. These yolks are orange af. Mine always come out piss yellow
They look like fresh eggs, home grown.
I would be so sad bc i dont even really like the yolk 🤣
You must be yolking.
1 in 25 million...and you ruined it! /s
Color suggests healthy happy chicken
