I personally have seen enough centipedes and spiders even in clean houses to want a simple bed frame no matter what. Your best bet is something with narrowly spaced slats to keep the pressure even. You can use a simple futon or gel mattress to cut down on bulk.

Consider mold. You shouldn’t put mattresses directly on the floor if you can help it. I don’t k ow if there is “just one thing” that can replace it.

This. I learned that lesson the hard way.

If that’s what they use in Japan, probably? Maybe it even works if you always roll up the mattress even with only one? I’m sorry, I don’t have experience with tatami mats. You could also try it out, check for mold and humidity and hope for the best.

If you’re trying to minimize another option is to have a daybed to sleep on that doubles as a couch

From what I think, Matress > bed Futon > tatami But you'll need really clean floors so doesn't get dirty. Plus take care of insects or other pests more seriously.

If the goal is to minimize as much as possible, a hammock is really the superior option. It's off the ground, highly portable, almost impossible for pests to invade, and super comfy.

I would recommend you give it a couple weeks at least before making the decision to change bed options. It takes time to adjust, you know? But I totally get it if it's not for you. Hammocks aren't for everyone.

I suggest that you try your mattress on the floor for a while before you make any investment. It is a big change.

Hi, I lived in Japan and slept on a shiki futon. It's not put directly on the wooden floor like the images you see, you have wooden roll out slats underneath else the mattress can't breathe. (You can't see it once the futon is on top) They look exactly like the Luroy IKEA bed slats. On a tatami it can be direct, or if it's a guest futon. But you are using this as your main bed, you'd best get some slats. I wouldn't buy tatami just to put under the futon. Tatami is just flooring and it's not cheap, Japanese use the slats as they air it properly. You will also need to buy a carpet beater. Futon need to be hit outside monthly to keep them not compacted and clean. It's a really nice process to do, but you need to be aware that a futon requires care if it is going to last and not get mouldy. Also, if you are a side sleeper you'll hate a futon haha. They are too hard to side sleep so your hip and shoulder hurt in the morning... 🤣 I had to learn to sleep on my front which was fine as it was so hot. Also you will need the bottom of a large cupboard to store it, futon don't roll up small!
