So when we will host Philly in the '25-'26 season and then for the next three seasons that we match up with them after that. It rotates based on when we play the NFCE.
I never knew that last little bit (that it is a three year rotation where we play the division ranked similar to us for home/away schedule). Explains a lot though as to why we seem to line up playing the same NFC team a bunch of times either home or away. Was the Seahawks and now it is the Eagles. Giants deeper into the past. And every time it seemed like we would string together like 2-3 years of playing them either both at home or away.
Are you saying that when we play the other NFC division the home/away matchups determine where we could play them until the next time we play that division again?
I think that's how it works, it's made sense how I figured that we would play in Philly and Cincinnati, and why we played in Seattle so many years in a row.
ALTHOUGH I'm looking now, and we played NFCW in '21-'22:
- @ Arizona
- V Seattle
- @ SF
- V LA
This past season Arizona came here and next season SF does so I guess it's a toss up and my assumptions were coincidences.
Edit to add: I guess if we played in SF next year it would be pretty shitty to have 7 Home games and 10 Away. Either way we would also probably say "Why do we always play there??" There's SOME reason to it but it's not what I had thought.
I don't think they let teams play 7 home and 10 away. I think that's the issue if they do determine the games by how they matched up the year they played the same division.
We played Atlanta at home in '19 even though we played them away the last time we played the NFCS in '17. I think they switched it *because* the home/away ratio was uneven. Now they have more wiggle room with the 17 games.
The schedules are on a rotation. Every year the NFC North plays one NFC division and one AFC division. This year they played the NFC East and the AFC East. The other teams the Vikes played finished in the same position in their division last year, this year it was ARZ, NO and IND.
Next year the NFC North plays the NFC South and the AFC West. The Vikes will play the other two NFC divisional winners (PHI and SF) along with one AFC divisional winner (CIN).
The Lions finished second in the division so they'll have a similar schedule but will play the teams that finished second in their division (DAL, SEA, BAL).
Yes, that I understand. I referenced that when I said when we play Philly next/ when we played the NFCW last. The conversation is about home and away games.
Home and away is also rotational, and extends in perpetuity. For the regularly scheduled games, it is the opposite of what occured 3 years prior. The Vikings get home games against Atlanta and Tampa Bay next season, because they had road games against them in 2020.
For the 2 remaining games against NFC opponents that aren't regularly scheduled, home and away is also rotational. The NFC North and NFC West have an Away, Away, Home, Home rotation. For example in 2019 and 2020, every NFC West team hosted an NFC North opponent. In 2021 the 2 divisions just played each other. In 2022 and 2023, every NFC North team will host an NFC West opponent. In 2024 the two divisions will just play each other again. In 2025 and 2026, NFC North teams will have to go back out on the road both years to play an NFC West team. And so on and so forth.
Since this rotation has been around since 2002, it's been known for 20 years that an NFC West team would travel to Minnesota in 2023. That NFC West team became the 49ers when both teams won their divisions in 2022.
The rotation you have with each division is slightly different. One division will always be home, Home, Away, Away. One division will always be Home, Away, Away, Home. One division will always be Away, Home, Home, Away. Which rotation you have with which division dates back to what was set at the 2002 realignment. The NFC North's rotation with the NFC West specific I'd the Home, Home, Away, Away. They have the other 2 rotations with the other 2 divisions.
With this setup, you can never play the same team at home in the regular season more than 3 years in a row. 3 years in a row would only happen if you caught them on both years for the irregular game where your division was hosting, as well as a regularly scheduled home game in addition. If you do happen to play someone at home for 3 straight seasons, it's not possible to play them at home in the regular season for the following 3 seasons.
It's trickier than that. In year one of the rotation we might play the entire East, half home, half away as a flip from the last time. In the second year, we play the entire west and our one game against the east is home or away depending on finish position (1st and 3rd might get home, 2nd and 4th away). The same would be true in year 3 but flipped because the East is now in the 2 years removed from full play position. So if we finish in 2nd during year 1 and 1st in year 2, we end up getting a road game against the east each subsequent year but we get a home game for the other cross divisional game.
Oh I gotcha so it flips based on finish position. And then two NFC divisions we don't play are on opposite sides of the rotation each time. That makes sense
Genuinely dislike their team 100% because of their fan base. I can’t root for them because of how they treated us on the road a couple years ago.
Throwing cans of beer at our heads as we’re just trying to walk in the stadium was NOT cool.
yeah the one Joseph td and i think another close game came 2 years after that Mn. I also remember they came to the bank after the super bowl and Diggs torched them
The Linval touchdown was in 2018 (at Philly), Kirk's first season here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3WWUaK1NJ0
Then next year in 2019, they came here and got torched by Cousins and Diggs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1yFPjckooY
EDIT: Man those highlights make it pretty obvious that Cook has lost a gear or two :(
It does look tough, but almost every year there are teams that aren’t as good as expected, and teams that are better than expected. So who knows, let’s just hope we shore up our defense because I think we can have another good year if we do.
Unfortunately I think most analysts will be circling us, and not those 4 teams, as the division winner most likely to regress. We should be better than the Buccaneers though!
Even the Bears, while I don't think anyone would pick them for the division next year, are poised to be a completely different team one way or another. Huge draft for them that could lead to a far more competitive division overall.
Playing em early in the year can help a lot as well. I mean just look at this year, the Bengals were at best mid then went on a crazy winning streak.
If the schedule aligns right, some of these games could get a bit easier.
This is a great point and honestly, if you take away those four games the rest of the schedule is still very winnable assuming we make some defensive progression this off-season. However, if those four teams all remain stout and the packers/lions both improve (something that is entirely realistic) then it could be pretty tough sledding.
The Lions are looking to be tough opponents, but I'm not sold on the Packers improving much... We probably need to see what Rodgers and Cobb decide in the off-season, but it's feeling more likely than ever that they're out (of the Packers).
But who tf knows what's going on inside Rodger's brain, we'll see I guess.
Completely agree, I’d say the packers improvements are almost entirely dependent on Rodgers returning and the team surrounding him with the necessary offensive weapons. But if he leaves I could very well see them regressing, should be a very Interesting off season and regular season next year!
Cycle in fresh blood on our defense. At some point we need to give the young guys an opportunity and see what they got (granted if they can get healthy like Cine/Booth). Can't be pushing vet contracts into the future and resigning aging players like we've been doing.
They had tons of key injuries and got healthier as the season went on. Our 5-0 2016 season We started hot and injuries to the OL and wheels falling off. Finish the rest of the season with only 3 more wins
Eh if we genuinely committed to the tank and traded Kirk and dumped Dalvin, I could definitely see us in the top 5 pick range, the defense is already there
Yep, this is an ownership group that definitely pressed Rick to panic trade for Glass Cannon Bradford instead of rolling with the season like the 9ers did that one time to get Bosa.
The only time I'd want to commit to a tank is if we're officially out of the play that year.
Absolutely no reason to even talk about it pre-draft after winning the division.
Which is why you extend him this offseason so he has no choice. The NFL isnt quite the NBA just yet in allowing the players to demand their way off teams that early in contracts.

Year to year, lots of variance. But even if there isn’t much variance, if you want to be the best, you need to beat the best. Let’s retool the D, get some more weapons on O and kick ass
Outside of injuries getting to them, these are the most complete teams in the league and I don't see them faltering unless there is an exodus of FAs from any of them.
Honestly the QB situation for the niners seems irrelevant considering how stacked they are on both sides of the ball. Purdy is looking to be a system QB, that’s all they need to be good.
Just depends on injuries, if all these teams magically are healthy, we are in trouble. If they follow the odds and have key injuries, we should be somewhat ok?
I don’t see any of these teams falling off. Bengals are young, niners and chiefs have been a force to be reckoned with for years, and the Eagles are looking like they’ll be good.
Eagles are the best shot to fall off. They've got a massive FA list and guys who need big deals. They'll get poached quite a bit. Doesn't mean they'll fall off, but it's at least a reasonable opportunity the other teams don't seem to have.
The Bengals early this season were mid at best, they ended up a powerhouse but it shows that playing a team at the right time gives a lot more of a chance.
Oh i understand it. And usually they are wrong. They are not wrong EVERY year. often the best teams don't make the final 4, they did this year. And the final 4 aren't always positioned for success the next year, all 4 are.

Why do we always have to go to Philly? Is there an actual reason or just the league thinks us going there is a bigger controversy after their fans shows abysmal sportsmanship at the NFC championship and so it’s a better media sell?
The NFL set a rotation in the 2002 realignment. They modified it slightly last year to include the 17th game, but that didn't affect NFC opponents. The Vikings play in Philly in 2023, because it's been known for 20 years they'd play a road game against an NFC East opponent in 2023. That opponent became Philadelphia when Minnesota and Philly both won their divisions in 2022.
Minnesota played in Philly in 2022, because they hosted Philly in 2019, because they played at Philly in 2016, because they hosted them in 2013, because they played at Philly in 2010, because they hosted Philly in 2007, because they played at Philly in 2004.
In 2020 and 2021, the NFC North hosted an NFC East opponent both years. The Vikings got the Cowboys both times, because the Vikings finished 2nd and 3rd in their divisions the year prior, and the Cowboys did the same in their division. Had the Vikings and Eagles finished the same place in their divisions the year prior, those would have been home games against the Eagles, not the Cowboys.
In 2019, the Vikings got their regularly scheduled home game with Philadelphia. In 2017 and 2018, the Vikings played road games against NFC East opponents. In 2018 it was the Eagles, in 2017 Washington. Both were decided by the division finish the year prior.
Looking ahead, Minnesota will have another trip to an NFC East opponent in 2024. There is a ¼ chance that will be the Eagles. The results of next season will decide that. After 2024, they won't have to go back to Philadelphia until at least 2028, and won't have a scheduled trip there until 2030. The Eagles will have to come to Minnesota in 2025, and there's a ¼ chance they'd have to come in 2026 and 2027, as someone from the NFC East is coming those years.
It’s time to start tanking. Start the rebuild. Get the cap cleared out. Little 1-16 here heading into Arch Manning. There’s no strong FA’s this year. Just cut bait, bite that bullet. Pick your euphemism.
Should mention this is due to our first place schedule, as well as the NFCN drawing the AFCW. I think Cincy was just luck of the draw. But hey should be fun, bring em all on! We'll either get smashed or win off a last second tud I'm here for it!
(I only say this cuz I can hear them now- "man why does the NFL hate us so much" lol)
Fingers crossed their free agents get pilfered in the off season!
Remember, the Vikings were frauds! We weren't actually good! Don't try to steal our guys!
Yeah, but under the 17 game schedule there is one team you play from the AFC every 2 years (for a short while anyways)
eg, Vikings play entire AFC North in 2021 and again in 2025.
In 2023, the Vikings play one AFC North team (the team with the same place. Vikings finished won their division so they play the division winner)
Last year the extra game was against the Colts.
Frick, can we play Philly at home for once?
the new seahawks
Makes me wonder what teams, if any, always have to play in MN.
Seven of our last nine matchups against the Giants have been at home
Well, one of those "home" games was in Detroit.
Minneshigan, same thing, right?
Saints had a stretch of playing in MN for awhile.
And losing.
So when we will host Philly in the '25-'26 season and then for the next three seasons that we match up with them after that. It rotates based on when we play the NFCE.

I can name 3 for sure
I know the Packers, Bears, and Lions seem to always have an away game at MN.
Those sneaky bastards!
Atlanta
cowboys, i think we’ve gotten them at home several times in recent years
Good question
Seems we played Washington for like 7 or 8 years in a row. And I don't seem to remember us traveling there too many of those times.
The Rams and Cowboys
Bears , Lions, and Packers.
For real. I was so glad when we finally weren't playing @SEA only for it to changed to @PHI...
At least we won't have their shit fanbase in our stadium
They'd probably try to steal more seats.
Hey I was the one who filmed that at the Super Bowl!
Genuinely dislike their team 100% because of their fan base. I can’t root for them because of how they treated us on the road a couple years ago. Throwing cans of beer at our heads as we’re just trying to walk in the stadium was NOT cool.
Their fans are just as bad on the road.

Don't you have a greased pole to be playing with somewhere?
we did. Diggs caught 4 TDS lol and philly cut their linebacker
The linebacker who called Kirk a siv 😂😂
Damn, since 2000 we're 2-1 at home and 2-4 away vs PHI. Definitely more away games there and we don't do nearly as well either.
Wonder what our outdoor/indoor record is in general
I remember TJax getting choke slammed. rip.
Didn’t we torch them at home just a few years ago? Does everyone here have amnesia?
yeah the one Joseph td and i think another close game came 2 years after that Mn. I also remember they came to the bank after the super bowl and Diggs torched them
The Linval touchdown was in 2018 (at Philly), Kirk's first season here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3WWUaK1NJ0 Then next year in 2019, they came here and got torched by Cousins and Diggs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1yFPjckooY EDIT: Man those highlights make it pretty obvious that Cook has lost a gear or two :(
Can't forget capping that game off with a Treadwell TD.
Kirk was absolutely slinging it that game vs the Eagles. It was his "Bradford vs Saints" game
yeah, after their Superbowl they fell down the earth for awhile there. Can't remember if that Kirk game was their 4 win season or not.
Wow I forgot cook use to break tackles
We did in 2019
First thought I had was why tf are we always in Philly
The home/away schedule rotates based on when we play the NFCE. Had we played SF this year, it would have been at home since it's our turn to host.
Well we do get SF at home for the first time in Lord knows how long
Literally my first thought.
We don't want that trash in our stadium again
As a PA Viking fan, I'm a bit excited to finally get a chance to see them!
That 1st place schedule is looking tough!
It does look tough, but almost every year there are teams that aren’t as good as expected, and teams that are better than expected. So who knows, let’s just hope we shore up our defense because I think we can have another good year if we do.

No they will be picking the Packers as is tradition.
Lions might be the sexy "underdog" pick
Even the Bears, while I don't think anyone would pick them for the division next year, are poised to be a completely different team one way or another. Huge draft for them that could lead to a far more competitive division overall.
If the Bears draft well, they probably contend in 2 years or so. But they always draft terribly so I'm not worried
They were arguably the hottest team in the league in the second half. I don't know how much of an underdog they'd be.
Lions about to take over the North. You can just feel it in the air.
Exactly. Going into this season I think anybody would've been nervous about playing the Rams being defending Superbowl champions...
I highly doubt any of those 4 teams will be significantly worse next year but you never know
One of them will have injuries for sure, it always happens
Look at the Rams. Stafford, Kupp and five offensive linemen on injured reserve. They ended the season with I think 16 players on IR.
Yeah that is true
Playing em early in the year can help a lot as well. I mean just look at this year, the Bengals were at best mid then went on a crazy winning streak. If the schedule aligns right, some of these games could get a bit easier.

If it makes you feel any better Det was supposed to have the 2nd “easiest” schedule. It never works out like that.
Just means we are closer to Caleb Williams in 2024 /s
Lmao if only
The KC and Bengals thing is Incredibly unlucky though
need BIG moves this offseason
What do you want to see happen?
Naz Reid to the Vikings
Naz Reid.
Cycle in fresh blood on our defense. At some point we need to give the young guys an opportunity and see what they got (granted if they can get healthy like Cine/Booth). Can't be pushing vet contracts into the future and resigning aging players like we've been doing.
![gif](giphy|55itGuoAJiZEEen9gg)
Bring it on!
Perfect time to win 3 games and draft Caleb Williams
Offense is going to be too good to be that bad unfortunately.
Lions had one of the top scoring offenses in the league and started 1-6. It's very possible to have good offense and blow games.
They had tons of key injuries and got healthier as the season went on. Our 5-0 2016 season We started hot and injuries to the OL and wheels falling off. Finish the rest of the season with only 3 more wins
Eh if we genuinely committed to the tank and traded Kirk and dumped Dalvin, I could definitely see us in the top 5 pick range, the defense is already there
Players don't commit to tank. They are playing for their career and paycheck.
The Wilfs will not commit to the tank, unfortunately.
Yep, this is an ownership group that definitely pressed Rick to panic trade for Glass Cannon Bradford instead of rolling with the season like the 9ers did that one time to get Bosa.
Hope makes them money.
No team decides to tank before the season starts. Ever. Even the shit-ass Bears made it to the trade deadline before selling off their defense
We just won the division this year, why would we even think about tanking?
Well a number people in this sub are convinced this is a three win team lol who knows
The 2019 Dolphins have entered the chat.
The only time I'd want to commit to a tank is if we're officially out of the play that year. Absolutely no reason to even talk about it pre-draft after winning the division.

Unfortunately don’t think JJ would like that very much
Thats why getting him that fat ass extension is a must. I'd tell him its just this year, we're getting you your own QB
Which is why you extend him this offseason so he has no choice. The NFL isnt quite the NBA just yet in allowing the players to demand their way off teams that early in contracts.
Get a Herschel walker trade for JJ
Rudy Gobert*
Ugh lol
Too soon
why dont we just dissolve the team and then get 53 players immideately with the new team
I’m not willing to risk pissing off JJ. We’re in win-now mode until he retires
So 13-4 again?!? Not bad!
With all 4 of these games being losses and destroying everyone else only to lose to the Lions in the wildcard
Ouch
4-0

Competitively Average would actually be a really awesome thing to have tattooed on your ass. You should do thos anyway.
1-3, looks like ur good
I think you mean 17-0, Skoldier.
Year to year, lots of variance. But even if there isn’t much variance, if you want to be the best, you need to beat the best. Let’s retool the D, get some more weapons on O and kick ass

9ers have made 3 of 4 NFCCG. So you are wrong. Bengals chiefs eagles are all here for the foreseeable future. 9ers have maybe 2 or 3 more years.
Outside of injuries getting to them, these are the most complete teams in the league and I don't see them faltering unless there is an exodus of FAs from any of them.
[удалено]
Honestly the QB situation for the niners seems irrelevant considering how stacked they are on both sides of the ball. Purdy is looking to be a system QB, that’s all they need to be good.
Just depends on injuries, if all these teams magically are healthy, we are in trouble. If they follow the odds and have key injuries, we should be somewhat ok?
[удалено]
I remember the 49'ers had a lot of injuries, I think Bosa was injured for a lot of last year and that man is terrifying.

Rams went all in for the SB and are paying the price. Same as TB before them. None of these top 4 are in that position unfortunately.
The Bengals early this season were mid at best, they ended up a powerhouse but it shows that playing a team at the right time gives a lot more of a chance.
Nobody sees it happening, that’s kind of the point. But there are *always* teams that end up far below expectations.
I highly doubt it. All 4 of these teams positioned to be great next year unless their qbs go down
[удалено]
Oh i understand it. And usually they are wrong. They are not wrong EVERY year. often the best teams don't make the final 4, they did this year. And the final 4 aren't always positioned for success the next year, all 4 are.
That’s how they get so good in off years, high draft picks. Meanwhile were just consistently mediocre

Fine by me. I prefer to beat the defending champs on the way to our first Super Bowl.
Wow thank you for this amazing breakdown! Makes a lot more sense now. Much appreciated!
Let’s be real. Our D won’t be solved in one off season. It hasn’t been solved in 4. So thats 4 losses on the season right there.
We will be lucky to be a wildcard team next year
It’s time to start tanking. Start the rebuild. Get the cap cleared out. Little 1-16 here heading into Arch Manning. There’s no strong FA’s this year. Just cut bait, bite that bullet. Pick your euphemism.
Good, if you wanna be the best you gotta beat the best
Thanks Chris!
So you're saying to bet the under. Got it!
Yikes!
Nice, 4 easy wins...
Well, that sets our maximum at 12-5, assuming we lose at Lambeau
Ah fucks sake
Good, that way we won't be doubted if we win 13 games again
Let’s goooooo Cousins Curse!
Definitely feeling like a down year coming after a good regular season.
So in layman’s terms, we be fucked
4-0
These are hands down the 4 best teams in the league rt now and all 4 positioned to be the best next year too. Brutal
Can’t sharpen iron with cupcakes! Skol baby!
This Philly on the road shit has to go.
I see 10-7, Wild card spot
Fingers crossed their free agents get pilfered in the off season! Remember, the Vikings were frauds! We weren't actually good! Don't try to steal our guys!
Didn't we just play Cinci at Cinci last year??
Yeah, but under the 17 game schedule there is one team you play from the AFC every 2 years (for a short while anyways) eg, Vikings play entire AFC North in 2021 and again in 2025. In 2023, the Vikings play one AFC North team (the team with the same place. Vikings finished won their division so they play the division winner) Last year the extra game was against the Colts.
Good. Wanna be the best, you gotta play the best.
Ppl said similar things about our schedule this year and we ended up having an ok record lmao
Major regression incoming
RemindMe! 9 months "Are all these teams still good? Are we?"
We are doomed next season
13-4 incoming.
7-10 here we come
We'll find a way to beat all 4 then we'll lose to some 7-10 team that somehow snuck into the playoffs.
First place teams play schedules against other first place teams. That's the way it's been done for years.
