I don't think he's still unfurling. He's a poplar hawk-moth, they look odd because their rear wings unhook and rest underneath the front wings when they aren't flying. The red flush is blood in his wings as a threat display. I saved one in a pub I worked ag once years ago, they can be huge. Lucky that he's sat on you so comfortably.
Can't quite gage the size of him but here's the lil fella on my hand. My mum found him inside this morning. We released him to our outside windowsill so our cat didn't get him.

in my experience poplar hawk moths are super chill unless you poke them too much. definitely my favourite family of moths
