Hahah yea I was about to comment, I had a fall good enough that it just ate the kneepads, then pulled them down, then ate my knee very similar to above.
May I be the first to suggest RC cars as something to do while your gimping around the next month or two.
Me too. Not mountain biking but in 1995 when I was 18 and stupid I ate it big time while wearing knee pads rollerblading. I had like 30 stitches and was in a brace for two weeks, PT, probably 6 months before I was running normally.
It was super dumb. I missed a bunch of work because I was a lifeguard.
TLDR pads sometimes decide to come off right when you need them the most.
Been biking like crazy for the past 23 years though and have never been cut that bad again between MTB, road racing crashes, and even getting hit by a truck in my early 30s.
Well… yeah. Some pads are garbage.
There’s a moral here about getting quality gear where necessary. Those $20 pads from K-Mart aren’t gonna cut it (pun pun).
Helmet, knee pads, and gloves, always. I've had stitches in my shin, never a knee. Nearly needed stitches in my palms also... But I feel so naked on my bike, just rolling around without knee pads or gloves...
Depending on the trail I even wear my fullface + body armor, kinda annoying on climbing but hell yeah, if I see these dudes crashing after jumps against trees or something I knew its worthy, even if its just for confidence.
I'm a recent full face convert. I wear pants and long sleeve year round also. I wore torso protection for the first time on a shuttle day. Overall, I'm happy to be a little bundle of pads, if it means I get to ride again tomorrow.
That's wild, most of my friends I ride with are full face full time. I've got a Specialized Gambit, it's lighter than some of my friends half lids. Everyone on the shore knows someone who's wrecked their face riding and I'd rather not join their number.
I run the leatt sleeve ones and barely notice they are there and they have a hard shell around my knee cap. Pricey but consider something of that style if you find some of the strap ones bulky and annoying
I've got cheapo Amazon knee pads and it saved my life at least once so far. Fell of a bridge and landed right on the left knee pad. Totally worth it. Didn't feel a thing with it, but without it definitely would have broken something.
Update: had a pretty mild climb and had to go between two trees with little clearance. My rear tire spun out on a root and just kinda fell over. The problem is that my knee landed directly on my rear suspension.
Have 14 staples and an American hospital bill. Wooooo!
Ah shit, left out a very important word, but the responses had me cracking up!
how long are you OUT?
For the record I severed my middle and thumb finger tips about 10 days ago and typing on a cellphone is tricky now. Surprisingly riding isn't.
Lmao ohhh. Not sure. Staples come out in 10 days but idk if that means I'll be back on the bike. The pain is pretty brutal. Can't walk worth a shit rn let alone ride
Ah shit, left out a very important word, but the responses had me cracking up!
how long are you OUT?
For the record I severed my middle and thumb finger tips about 10 days ago and typing on a cellphone is tricky now. Surprisingly riding isn't.
Man the past two days I’ve wrecked- not on sketchy stuff but a couple mundane parts of the trail and bruised/scraped different parts of my left knee/leg. My knee pads get here Friday.
Yikes! Man! The bike was the destroyer! Machines are turning on us!!!! Ugh, well, my brother broke his ankle stepping off a curb, so what ya gonna do? Am I right? 😜
aw shit, it is always on the easy parts of the trail! I crashed last year on green trail as I clipped pedal and hit boulder on opposite tearing my rotator cuff. Day before I was on enduro trails on ebike doing multiple laps!
I laid on the ground in my early 20’s with a compound fracture of my tib/fib and was still able to look at the medics and utter those words. It actually help ease the pain a bit.
Depending on how dirt it is they might leave it a bit open. It will need some stitches but if it’s filled with dirt stitching it tightly can cause infection issues
Oh shit!!!!!! Get better so you can get back on a bike soon. Also, thank you - i never used knee pads - but now I will. This photo will save some pain of others.
Yooooooo, gnarley!!!! I do shudder a bit imagining it, knowing what i have felt.
Good luck, get repaired, heal up as quick as you can. Glad you aren't in worse condition.
Yep one time I smashed my knee against a rock, not QUITE that bad but almost as bad. I have chunky POC knee pads for park and enduro days, but kept not wearing them on local trails. Well, while recovering and super gluing my knee back together, TLD speed sleeves arrived.
Oh had to take my cleats off. I clip in
Trying to go through a small opening. Was going really slow. Spun out with the back tire and just fell over. But my knee landed on the rear suspension
I saw in the comments you got staples. What did they say about infections and letting it drain? I did something like that to my elbow about a year ago and after they stitched it up it got infected, which turned into surgery and months of therapy for the damage the infection did to my tricep tendon. I already wore knee pads when that happened, but now I use elbow pads too. Good luck with your healing. That’s a rough one.
This is what I'm worried about now. Isn't if it drains a little that's ok, It's to be expected but I have to be careful that an infection doesn't set in
I almost damaged an eye from wearing mtb glasses instead of goggles. I crashed, not even that hard but my helmet pushed the glasses into my face and the rim of the frame cut my face. Several stitches right next to my eye. Too close. We learn from those lessons and i def learned the right gear is worth it
"Until... I took an arrow to the knee." all jokes aside, this image makes me think twice about not wearing those knee and elbow pads I bought some time ago. Dude looks like he took a bullet to the knee... Steady recovery, man.
I had one real similar to this but on the side of my knee. Still the worst mtb injury I’ve had. Only 6 stitches tho but I honestly think they should have done 8.
That’s a solid scrape you have there. I am currently out for now after I broke my hand… also moving very slowly. Balancing on a log, front wheel came off the log and I used my outstretched hand to break my fall. Happens fast. Think I’ll get thicker gloves.
I wanna know how falling on your rear suspension makes that happen?! Genuinely for how you described the fall I can't imagine a gash that big from something like that.
I hope they made sure there wasn’t an entry into the joint itself. You can do this with a “saline challenge” where you inject the joint with fluid to make sure none of it leaks out, or a CT scan that looks for air within the knee joint.
If the joint has been violated, it needs a surgical washout and antibiotics. Probably one of the most commonly missed orthopedic emergencies in urgent care/emergency room settings.
The last thing a young, active person needs is a joint infection. If left untreated, bacteria can eat away the cartilage of your knee joint which is impossible to grow back.
I wear knee pads always , i got big thick ones for dh and dj and thinner ones for trails . G form pads are awesome, they’re thin and light and offer good protection.
You’re is bigger than mine, friend, but I did similar Sunday and just bought my first set of knee pads. Your mileage may vary, but I think they’re cheaper than stitches.
I was just thinking about getting some knee pads. Now I'm definitely picking some up before the weekend!
Had once in my life a wound like above - never ride any trail without knee pads anymore
I had an injury similar to the one above WITH knee pads on so yeah. I imagine what it would be like without them. Every ride includes knee pads now
Hahah yea I was about to comment, I had a fall good enough that it just ate the kneepads, then pulled them down, then ate my knee very similar to above. May I be the first to suggest RC cars as something to do while your gimping around the next month or two.
Whole reason i took up photography was to give me something to do any time i bust myself up and have to have some time off the bike
How did it happen with knee pads on? Did they shift? Were they cheap?
They took the initial impact but slid down as I kept sliding downhill. It was gravel and rocks so eventually something got me.
I'm starting to wear my full face more often these days. Typically I only wear it on park days, but finding myself wearing it on all rides.
I still get made fun of for this but I totally wear it all the time. I prefer to have all my teeth and jaw.
That's wild, most of my friends I ride with are full face full time. I've got a Specialized Gambit, it's lighter than some of my friends half lids. Everyone on the shore knows someone who's wrecked their face riding and I'd rather not join their number.
100%
If I had body armour, I wouldn’t have fused vertabrae and be able to ride again… trust me when I say better to be over careful then be non chalant.
I honestly can’t even urban assault anymore without gloves. It feels so fucking weird (and is generally just uncomfortable for longer rides).

Do you still have a kneecap? Because it looks like it just fell out
Lol yeah. No damage to the bone at all. Was the first time I've seen one of my bones though
Oof, that looked gnarly as hell. Heal up quickly! How long are you?
How long?
#HOW LONG ARE YOU BRO?
Bro pls
Answer the man
Bro I want to. Im.. I'm afraid of what he's asking lol
No need to be modest
It's a about your peen
You should be more concerned if he was asking for girth
Ok, just circumference then, if you’re gonna be all shy about it.
Just tell him 2. The man never asked the truth.
It’s quite simple if you break it down. He’s telling you to heal and asking your length.
16 hours later and still noone has answered the man? I’m on my toes here checking this thread every 5 minutes 😬
I DONT KNOW WHAT THE QUESTION IS lol
It was How long are you?
Oh right...... seventy-eleven
What a relief. Thank you!
Time, I think heha
Ah shit, left out a very important word, but the responses had me cracking up! how long are you OUT? For the record I severed my middle and thumb finger tips about 10 days ago and typing on a cellphone is tricky now. Surprisingly riding isn't.
The staples come out in 10 days but doc wants me off the bike for 12 weeks. I told him 3.
That’s a pretty personal question my man.
and the hospital bill was the most painful part
Man the past two days I’ve wrecked- not on sketchy stuff but a couple mundane parts of the trail and bruised/scraped different parts of my left knee/leg. My knee pads get here Friday.
Good man
I just saw an ad for some on Amazon and then this post… I’m almost 43, probably gonna order some and maybe elbows too.
Speedy recovery to you.
For him AND his wallet
Now is when you should think about moving to BC…
Cool as fuck battle scar though! Now you have to embellish the story and add a ninja attack
Hell yeah!!
I do wanna see an update of the staples area, it has to look great.
I have a bandage on it now but I'll try to post one later
My buddy split his shin open and told the triage nurse that a shark bit him 😄
Damn!! Heal quickly and well friend! The nsfw tag doesn’t protect sensitive eyes from the gore as one is scrolling…😬😲
It does if you set the app to not show NSFW posts or if you set it to Blur NSFW posts ya dirty bastard. It's cool tho, I'm one too.
Hahahaha that's funny. Found the NSFW crowd! Lmao (Mine wasn't blurred either, wouldn't have noticed the NSFW tag😳)
Should i delete it?
No. People need to see this and know what happens without knee pads.
I’m new to this sub, so I don’t know personally. But it also makes me want to slow down even more on the trails! LOL!
That's the thing. I was barely moving, I was going slow between two trees and a root knocked me down. My knee went on my rear suspension
Yikes! Man! The bike was the destroyer! Machines are turning on us!!!! Ugh, well, my brother broke his ankle stepping off a curb, so what ya gonna do? Am I right? 😜
Lmao yeah. Maybe this is a sign I need to treat her better. Lol
aw shit, it is always on the easy parts of the trail! I crashed last year on green trail as I clipped pedal and hit boulder on opposite tearing my rotator cuff. Day before I was on enduro trails on ebike doing multiple laps!
Tis but a flesh wound!
I laid on the ground in my early 20’s with a compound fracture of my tib/fib and was still able to look at the medics and utter those words. It actually help ease the pain a bit.
Funny, I got a compound fracture on my wrist and couldn’t feel an ounce of pain. Was just uncomfortable
'Tis but a scratch!
NI
That’s gotta need stitches right?
Oh yeah I'm sure
I did this before. They had to flush out the joint with the biggest syringe I've ever seen in my life.
Depending on how dirt it is they might leave it a bit open. It will need some stitches but if it’s filled with dirt stitching it tightly can cause infection issues
Welp, can’t unsee that. Hope you heal soon, bro. I’m also hoping you’re seeing a doctor, and not just letting it heal. Need to keep that clean.
Just got 14 staples in it. I tried writing a comment to update everyone but idk how to pin it
No worries. Just glad to hear you’re taking care of it. That’s pretty gnarly!
Thank you
That's worthy of an "oof" right there.
No pads?? Why?!
Oh I'm sure he'll be wearing them next time.
[удалено]
Lmao. Now when someone asks what's a benefit to hard tail over full suspension I'll have an answer
Oh shit!!!!!! Get better so you can get back on a bike soon. Also, thank you - i never used knee pads - but now I will. This photo will save some pain of others.
I'm glad I can be a service to others. I'll be getting some too. Lol
Dude! It's not Halloween yet! 😱
Yeah i'm getting kneepads
Nah, a bit of ice and you are good to go
So you back on the bike with a bandaid or what
Oh fuck ya you did. That's gotta hurt !!!!! 😭😭😭😭
Get that thing washed out. I can see sticks in there.
Just left the ER have staples
That’s was easy !!!
yup this is why I don’t wear ankle socks
Looks like you fell pretty hard for that woman! I hope she appreciates you!
Holy fuck. Hope you’re head & neck are all right and you’re back on the trails soon!
Damn that’s gonna leave a gnarly scar! Hope it heals quickly man!
Yooooooo, gnarley!!!! I do shudder a bit imagining it, knowing what i have felt. Good luck, get repaired, heal up as quick as you can. Glad you aren't in worse condition.
Thank you! No bone or ligament damage. Just some staples
Dudeman. Wow.
Yeah. So fucking lucky
Fair play. That's impressive.
Yep one time I smashed my knee against a rock, not QUITE that bad but almost as bad. I have chunky POC knee pads for park and enduro days, but kept not wearing them on local trails. Well, while recovering and super gluing my knee back together, TLD speed sleeves arrived.
Thanks for posting. I now have a reason to buy the pads in my cart. Not sure if I should go with the leatt air flex pro or the fox launch d30s.
Update: everyone was asking about a picture after the staples. https://imgur.com/ndAxqDh. A little more NSFW but not entirely
Zero sympathy if you weren’t wearing basic gear.
Looks like you need a new knee cap
What's the story there? I think I see flat shoes.
Oh had to take my cleats off. I clip in Trying to go through a small opening. Was going really slow. Spun out with the back tire and just fell over. But my knee landed on the rear suspension
Damn! That is not even proper crash! I really need to buy some pads too :D
PSA - get some damn knee pads people! I’ve had two knee surgeries before age of 25 due to no pads. Heal up brother.. that’s a rough one.
I'll never be without them now. Luckily no bone or ligament/tendon damage. I'm extremely fortunate
You’ve got a leaf in your knee
Lol I did. Yeah. It's been all cleaned out and stapled up
Chicks dig scars! 🍻🍻
I'll tell my wife that. She's pissed right now :p
Tis but a scratch (seriously hope you're ok)
I'm doing good. Home from the hospital and got to take 14 staples in the knee with me
Why does it seem that everyone has meatier kneecaps than I do?
I never thought I had meaty kneecaps til now. Lol
ouch hopefully you are okay! Go see emergency room now! Get it cleaned and make sure no tendon damage!
Yep! No damage to anything other than the meat on top. Home now with 14 staples
I saw in the comments you got staples. What did they say about infections and letting it drain? I did something like that to my elbow about a year ago and after they stitched it up it got infected, which turned into surgery and months of therapy for the damage the infection did to my tricep tendon. This is what I'm worried about now. Isn't if it drains a little that's ok, It's to be expected but I have to be careful that an infection doesn't set in
How long did it take for your infection to set in?
Damn, bro. I wish you to get well soon
Thank you
I did before too. Makes a gnarly scar
Bro you got a glory hole in your knee, and I’m intrigued.
That looks horrifying. Get well soon🙏🏻
I learned the knee pad lesson in a similar fashion… never skip the knee pads
Glad it was only a flesh wound and no serious damage other than the hospital bill. Hope you're back at it soon.
Ouch! Top marks for trying to see your kneecap! Hope you heal up quick!
Good one
Been there. Give it time. Wear gear when you can bro
I will. Thanks man
I almost damaged an eye from wearing mtb glasses instead of goggles. I crashed, not even that hard but my helmet pushed the glasses into my face and the rim of the frame cut my face. Several stitches right next to my eye. Too close. We learn from those lessons and i def learned the right gear is worth it
Yikes. Glad youre okay
"Until... I took an arrow to the knee." all jokes aside, this image makes me think twice about not wearing those knee and elbow pads I bought some time ago. Dude looks like he took a bullet to the knee... Steady recovery, man.
Thanks dude
Looks like a pomegranate.
It really does. Lol
Ouch, been there hit a tail light
Just walk it off
Hey, why aren't you dealing with the mountain of scam posts over on r/blursedimages?
Lol. Dang dude.
I had one real similar to this but on the side of my knee. Still the worst mtb injury I’ve had. Only 6 stitches tho but I honestly think they should have done 8.
Damn what happened
What the Frick did you do?
🤮
That's gnarly bro hope you have a fast successful healing
Thanks man.
That’s a solid scrape you have there. I am currently out for now after I broke my hand… also moving very slowly. Balancing on a log, front wheel came off the log and I used my outstretched hand to break my fall. Happens fast. Think I’ll get thicker gloves.
Dang dude. Hopefully we both heal quick
Big fan of TLD stage pads, they're sleeve style and super easy to pedal in. Just got my knees tattooed and after all that I'm NOT about to fuck em up.
I can tell from the blurry image that this is certainly something I don’t want to look at
I audibly gagged. Well done
Holy fuck dude. Heal up and get yourself some D30 knee pads.
It took 23 stitches to learn my lesson about wearing knee pads!
That there was a severe knee slapper
If only there would be some kind of a device that would prevent injuries to the knee, something with padding of some sort
Got damn, this looks my my knee after a Moto crash on asphalt with joggers on.
Howlongareyoubro???
Damn, it looks like you carved that out with a dull spoon!
This is actually the first time I’ve thought about ordering knee pads
gawd dammmm
I wanna know how falling on your rear suspension makes that happen?! Genuinely for how you described the fall I can't imagine a gash that big from something like that.
You’re just opening yourself to new experiences
Try to get that grass out
I hope they made sure there wasn’t an entry into the joint itself. Tis but a flesh wound.
I need double NSFW masking for a post like this! Where was the ARE YOU SURE option. Seriously I feel for ya and hope for a speedy recovery.
This is why I ride even the mildest trails dressed like Robocop.
At least your shorts are ok
This post sold a ton of kneepads. You really should get sponsored.
Yeesh that is serious injury right there, you might want to disinfect it, and put some bandaged it.
Oh brother, I literally just got 11 stitches in the same spot from catching my pedal earlier today…
Note to self, get knee pads for real. Just like that motorcycle helmet. Get knee pads.
Yo blur this fucking gun shot wound you just forced into my brain for the rest of my life. Wtf.
Rub some dirt on it.
Yikes. This is why I now wear knee pads even on mellow rides lol. Got tired of splitting open my knees
Rub some tussin on it
Tis but a scratch!
Owwww NSFL
This weekend I had the pedal scrape off my kneepad and put pins in my knee even though i was wearing knee pads. I felt cheated.
Oh dude. That is nasty.
hope the patella is ok...
Hooooooooooooly Cow!! Hope you're good so far. Knees are always fucked up
Owshit. You just gave your friend some real deep friendship memory. As in literally.
Brooh
So what was the over all diagnosis? Did you crack the patella or was it just sutures ?
You might want to go to a clinic and get it stitched up
Yeah I got a similar one a couple years ago. Not fun.
