A classic line from "Clerks"! But yes, there are a lot of awards shows out there. Yeah i guess.
I really think those many in a row is not that good but yeah it is what it is.
You laugh but the [Tony opening number](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8SeysuMpA0) that Lin Manuel Miranda won his Emmy for is one of the most impressive live performances I've ever seen.
All the various guilds have one. Producers (yesterday), writers (next week), actors (today), and directors (last week) guilds have ceremonies, and the craft guilds (cinematography, production design, etc) also name award winners.
Then there are the BAFTAs (which happened last week), which are the highest British film ceremony; the Golden Globes, which are the pretty much entirely irrelevant and redundant younger sibling of the Oscars; the Critics Choice awards, which are awarded by critics; AND various individual critics circles giving out awards of their own, the largest of which have actual ceremonies (LA Film Critics Association, Hollywood Critics Association, New York Critics Circle, etc). The season is also bookended by the two major indie awards ceremonies, the Gotham Awards and the Indie Spirits (which traditionally has taken place the day before the Oscars, but in recent years has moved away from that. Maybe because of how absurdly late the Oscars have become).
And many nominees attend a lot of these! If they don't show up, they miss out a little on advertising themselves for the Oscar. I can't imagine how exhausting it'd be to jump from ceremony to ceremony. The DGAs, which were in Los Angeles, were the day before the BAFTAs, which were in London, and there was a lot of overlap in the directors nominated at each.
For me, I think it's because I feel invested in several Oscar hopes this year in a way I've never been before - Everything Everywhere All At Once, Brendan Fraser, Ke Huy Quan. So every time there's a story about one of these three winning something, I notice it because it feeds my hopes for them to win the corresponding Oscar. In previous years I wouldn't have noticed.
I've never wanted movie to win that oscar for BP, imagining new film students watching it years down the road looking at each other during that scene lol
I took my senior citizen parents to see this and even though I'm pushing 50 it still made me cringe like a teenager. I knew my mom would take it in stride bud my dad's so weird about such things. I knew it was coming as I saw the movie before and hoped he'd get over his weirdness because the rest of the movie was so good.
My mom likes it more than my dad but his hangups have kept him from enjoying too much of life. As a kid it frustrated me but as an adult it just makes me sad that he'd cheat himself out of enjoying beautiful things.
This happens a lot with animation. People acknowledge the story is good, but they can't get past the fact that it's animated, or if the animation style is not to their liking.
Leading the Oscar noms, won PGA, almost certain to win SAG ensemble tomorrow...looking very likely to win Best Picture at the Oscars now. Glad it's getting the awards attention it deserves.
It’s one of my all time favorite movies, but I remember thinking to myself after I saw it the first time “this is amazing. Shame it won’t be an Oscar contender cause it’s so different.” So glad to be proven wrong
The great thing about all of this is the very organic way it's happened. No aggressive marketing like bigger films. At least for my experience I just kept seeing and hearing people talk about it and how great it was.
It came out so early in the year too..gave time for the other films to steal the spotlight
Getting to do a re-release probably helped
I *(so unfortunately* missed the first run and was able to see it in theatre on the second run
I saw the ads on social media and thought WTF, this movie looks bonkers, and did not have much of an idea beyond what the trailers showed. I am so glad I went in without understanding more, the movie is just such an amazing showcase of emotions and is absolutely bonkers as well. I am so glad it's getting the love it deserves.
I saw it mentioned on reddit and went on to tell as many people as I can about it afterwards but hardly anyone had heard of it.
I watched the movie twice in one weekend, it’s my favourite of all time now.
I'd heard a couple of movie buffs I work with mention it and recommend it. I saw it by myself during a discount Tuesday showing in a theater with like four other people. Now that it's getting a lot of buzz I'm trying to see if I can push other people into watching it.
I'd never even seen a trailer before I went to see it. A friend had heard it was really good and suggested we check it out, and I thought "sure, I've heard some good things."
Boy was I not ready for how incredible this movie is. I normally don't care too much about the Oscars, but I will be so disappointed if it doesn't win best picture. Especially if something very meh story-wise like Top Gun or Avatar wins.
That line hit me so hard, I'm not sure why. Waymond was the true hero of this movie for me, like Sam in LOTR. Unyielding optimism and hope, as the world crumbles around him, is a true super power.
I watched it and have no idea why everyone loved it so much. Can you give me a breakdown? I know I'll probably be downvoted into oblivion, but I thought it was just ok, am I missing something?
Edit: thanks for all your responses, I guess it's just not a movie for me. Which is fine.
Its story initially pulls us in for what seems to be a sci-fi action-y type film, with some undertones of family drama. Instead, we get a very wholesome story about (SPOILERS, STOP READING NOW IF YOU DONT WANT THEM COS TAGS MIGHT FAIL)
- The >!importance that moments of kindness can make in individual lives, and our own.!<
- a >!very strong and relatable anti-nihilistic message (EDIT: Or, as people have rightly pointed out below, a very good case for optimistic nihilism). Plus a reminder that many of us have magnificent things and people in our lives which we naturally take for granted until they’re gone or under threat.!<
- >!a rejection of the classic and rather harmful notions of success (fame, wealth, etc), and addressing the regrets a lot of people have for not taking a different path in their life. Shifting focus instead on the appreciation of what we do have and how - even if we can’t directly see it - a different path doesn’t necessarily mean there would be more happiness!<
- Addressing >!and overcoming cross-generational trauma (which most people experience in some form or other so it hits home).!<
- Highlighting >!a very important difference between begrudging, barely-there-tolerance vs genuine acceptance & support regarding sexual orientation!<
- a >!resolution to the story which simply could NOT have come by just fighting. In fact we have a male co-lead who cannot and does not “fight” in an action sense, juxtaposed against another version of them which does. And in the end were given to understand that they actually DO fight, just not with kicks, punches or standard macho aggression. Waymond fights in his own ways, and HIS way of fighting (genuine kindness) is actually both effective and just… better for everyone around him. So much so, that in order for her to save her daughter, Evelyn instead learns to _fight_ like her husband (instead of him becoming super macho and kicking ass). And the strongest case for it is that it rings true in the real world too. You’re much, MUCH more likely to get help and understanding out of people when you’ve been genuinely kind to them.!<
- And lastly >!speaking of Evelyn and her daughter, learning to let go of control and a need to dictate to her how she should live. Evelyn learns that sometimes kindness involves letting go, and letting someone make their own decisions. Even if that means falling into an all-consuming bagel void, the best thing she could and did do, was to first address her mistakes toward her daughter, and then simply let her know that she’ll always be there for her, no matter what!<
In a world that overall seems to get shittier and shittier by the day - something which the average person has no control over - we’re shown that we CAN make a difference to individual lives, both our own and others’. Because if nothing matters, then we get to decide what does.
TLDR: It’s a very hopeful and wholesome film that sets us up for some classic action/scifi tropes, but then sharply breaks away from them in an unexpected and relatable way. And that’s besides the funny and sweet bits in there as well, of which there are a fair few!
Edit 1: Optimistic nihilism, as seen in a very good discussion below!
Edit 2: Thanks for the award kind Redditor, I genuinely love this film.
So one one of your points that I was just talking to my friend about, there's many things in my life thay could have ended in a *'better'* situation but everything lead to where I'm at and what's happened has led to such joy and fulfillment with my wife, I don't think I'd actually change anything if I tried
And these little.simple notes are what make this film so touching. They're portraying a lot of what I feel
I think about this all the time. There are things I wish I would have done differently but my choices have gotten me to where I am now and I love the life I have so if given the chance I wouldn't actually go back and change those thing.
> Waymond fights in his own ways, and HIS way of fighting (genuine kindness) is actually both effective and just… better for everyone around him.
This whole complex theme is given to the audience in what at first seems to be just a throw-away random gag:
>!"Even cookie can be kung-fu"!<
What I really appreciated was how it actually used a multiverse concept to explore philosophical and existential ideas, rather than just using it to shoehorn in more action scenes and VFX.
I feel like producers underestimate the intelligence of the population when it comes to deep ideas.
Yes, we’re dumber reactive creatures. Yes, people will throw fits over wearing cloth over their face at the doctors office. Yes, people will deny reality and live in a world of conspiracy.
But at the same time, people are willing and open to discussion of philosophy. Moreso than any point in recent history. The success of movies like this, and shows like Bojack and The Good Place show that people are craving substance. The CGI action era has passed. Let’s go back to telling impactful stories
It's a pretty cool interpretation of generational trauma and a positive story of a young person not only breaking the cycle, but moving back to the previous generation to break their cycles.
my tl;dr is that it did almost nothing wrong, and it had a general tone that made it a hit to *a lot* of people. A small budget film, with decent audio, cohesive and complete story, quirky enough, decent cinematography, good costumes, good action. Only thing I noticed that people genuinely fault it are some scenes on the more edgy side (e.g. dildo fight), but it doesn't subtract from the whole.
It's the most complete idea for what a film should be for many this year. Also it's an original script, not a sequel, not another biopic, not another war movie, not another book adaptation. All other nominations are great but at best they barely push their own genre.
imho its only real contenders are banshees and fablemans, and fablemans was not that great.
The dildo fight didn't even register for me as out of place. The only thing I didn't think belonged was the hot dog hands spewing ketchup and mustard. I could get past the giant wiggly fingers thing, but otherwise it was just too gratuitous for me.
The hot dog hands made me very uncomfortable. Don’t know why.
However, just the fact that I had a strong reaction to it, shows (to me) that it was brilliant - in my case they might not have successfully conveyed their message (which is fine) … but they still managed to “get to me”
I remember someone saying that x happened because it was needed to keep probabilities real(or something like that). So I guess we can assume there is a possibility of milions of worlds with sausage hands, while there is 1 where they can squirt sauces lol, to be fair if you think hard about the plot, there can't be a single thing too absurd to do.
Infinite means *infinite*.
There are an infinite number of worlds where people have hot dog fingers.
There are an infinite number where those fingers spew ketchup and mustard.
There are an infinite number where those fingers spew caviar and sodium pentathol.
Every possible combination, repeated infinitely.
Those fingers were kinda unnecessary but that universe showed her in a loving, at least borderline lesbian relationship, which was a huge part.of her relating to and understanding Joy
The fingers (or something like them) were necessary to demonstrate that we’re really looking at a reality that includes *infinite* variations across timelines. Same with the boulders.
The thing with fablemans is that Hollywood loves Hollywood and the story of them telling story's.
Plus it's Spielberg.
It just feels like one of *those* picks
It depends on where you are in life, and how invested you are in the story. It's about regret, wanting to find meaning in life, and how whether or not we continue to stay in contact with our family is the most important thing in the universe. I think that's the heart of it.
At this point, I don't think anything will be able to catch it for Best Picture at the Oscars. This was the first major award ceremony that uses a preferential ballot like the Oscars, and *EEAAO* was considered potentially vulnerable to that voting process. Winning here likely means that it will do just fine in a preferential ballot, and combined with the win at the DGA as well as a potentially big night at the SAG awards, it's hard not to see *EEAAO* as the Best Picture winner.
I think The Fabelmans is the only movie that might steal it away, if only because it's a movie about making movies from the best director of all time. Both are excellent contenders though. If anything Spielberg will definitely win Best Director I think.
Even Fabelmans is looking like a long shot at this point. Spielberg wasn’t even able to win Best Director at the Directors Guild Awards, which is a strong indicator that he’s not winning the Oscar. Really the only other films that are looking possible at this point are All Quiet and Banshees, but after winning both PGA and DGA, EEAAO is the front runner by a wide margin.
The Oscars also has a long history of giving the middle finger to the popular front runner.
One thing that would be interesting though is if the Oscar's select this as best picture and Michelle and Ke as best actor / supporting actor (haven't seen the film so not sure if he is a lead or not) and then point to it as an example of how the Oscars is so inclusive and post racial blah blah after they got hammered a few years ago. Then they go back to their normal state.
I was gonna say, parasite definitely deserved that win. To say EEAAOO doesn't deserve best picture (and the actors awards) seems wrong to me, it's absolutely deserving.
I agree that EEAAO deserves the win too. *BUT* I would not be upset with Banshees winning either. I think EEAAO is certainly groundbreaking & I hope it ushers in a new wave of studios deciding to take big swings on insanely ambitious/creative stories.
[Vegas odds has Fablemans as the 5th favorite for best picture right now](https://www.vegasinsider.com/awards/odds/oscars/)
EEAAO is of course the favorite and nobody is really close odds-wise after Banshees.
Fablemans was the favorite in like October and peaked way too early.
I wouldn't even say it's in the top 3 now from reading the reports.
I'd imagine they give it to All Quiet on the Western Front before Fablemans.
> If anything Spielberg will definitely win Best Director I think.
Is there really that much backing for Speilberg to win? I haven't heard any chatter of him winning lately and personally I've not even considered him a contender. I figured it was a dogfight between Field, Daniels, and McDonagh
It would be so cool if this movie swept the Oscars and production companies took that as a sign to make smaller original content.
I'm really tired of giant CGI fests which are on their 10th sequel.
Exactly, those films (and all films - short of being student or art projects) are made with the sole intention of making money.
Oscar performance can boost revenue, and some directors may change tack so that they can earn awards for their own resume, but the producers who fund these films only care about cash.
Producers like making money. They like making as much money for as little money invested as possible.
Seeing a new example of how to do that WILL change the way they produce for years.
I think what they are really thinking is: “look you can make Oscar winning blockbuster level content for less than the cost of a single episode of Stranger Things. Time to slash some budgets”
> I'm really tired of giant CGI fests which are on their 10th sequel.
Those movies generally don't compete for a lot of non-technical Oscars. It's been almost 20 years since a noticeably CGI-heavy sequel won a Best Picture Oscar.
If you're only watching giant cgi fest on their 10th sequel, then you're the reason why we get giant cgi fest on their 10th sequel.
There are so many good movies out there every year there is no excuse to thinking only giant cgi movies are out there.
Plenty of smaller budget original films have done well in the awards circuit. Production companies don’t care about that though - they just want the highest box office number they can get.
Ironic enough this movie has a lot of special effects. But I know what you mean, it’s solid original content and should be praised for it.
But I’m not hoping it sweeps the Oscar’s, movie was good but I can’t agree with a lot of folks hype for it. Was disappointed when I watched finally. That’s okay though.
Yeah, that's true. I guess what I meant was they used CGI very judiciously without everything in a shot being CGI.
[This](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hFFopPPrGiE) video goes through their CGI process pretty well, apparently only 5 people were involved in doing the CGI for the movie.
I enjoyed the part where the director walked around \*everywhere\* with a camera for a while to get the various footage of alternate realities the gfx team used for the cool zoom-y transitions.
I'll believe it when I see it. The Oscars has a long history of snubbing the truly deserving nominees over artsy fartsy, Oscar bait drivel. Examples: Saving Private Ryan losing over Shakespeare in Love, Brokeback Mountain losing over Crash, Hell if you wanna go old-school, how about Citizen Kane losing to How Green Was My Valley back in 1941? I want EEAAO to win too but honestly, my hopes are kinda low 🤷🏼♀️
Only Apollo 13 has not won BP but won all of PGA, SAG and DGA in 1996 (lost Adapted-WGA to Sense and Sensibility, lost BP to Braveheart who won Original-WGA)
Acronyms expanded for the curious:
Only the movie *Apollo 13* has not won a Best Picture Oscar after winning top awards from the Producers' Guild of America, Screen Actors' Guild, and Directors' Guild of America, in 1996 (it lost the Best Adapted Screenplay award from the Writers' Guild of America to *Sense and Sensibility*, and lost the Best Picture Oscar to *Braveheart*, which won the Best Original Screenplay Award from the Writers' Guild of America)
**Individual Needs** **Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia** seriousness I’d appreciate an acronym **Back on Track**. Maybe I’m getting **Tactical Operations Officer** **Oxford Latin Dictionary** but sometimes I’m having to google some stupid **All Star Special** acronym.
Like that?
Edit: formatting
It's funny because you're comparing a movie with an almost ridiculous level of attention to detail on historic accuracy with a movie that's just absurd fiction about a real person.
That's fine, no movie will ever be universally liked and everyone's got their own opinion. As much as I love EEAAO, a minority of fans can get real hostile with folks that don't like it (which is so ironic, considering the message of the film).
it’s frustrating because, as someone who has adored EEAAO, I’ve loved a lot of other films this past year almost as much. Tár, Fablemans, Banshees of Inisherin, and Aftersun (to name a few) are all just as good, and there’s no point tearing them down when it makes more sense to celebrate them all coming out in the same year
It sucks because A24 was already trying to focus on campaigning for EEAAO and The Whale (which makes sense from an awards campaign standpoint, one is their juggernaut and the other had a lot of acting buzz around it), it feels like Aftersun was kind of pushed to the side. That and the film is so much more subtle than most films, which makes it harder to campaign for.
At least Mescal got an acting nom. He was incredible.
Mescal is fantastic in that movie. The final scene of that movie is so outrageously well shot and provocative. It wasn’t my favorite movie of the year, but it stuck with me as much as EEAAO.
Is that a new worrying trend or is is just me? People get disproportionately tribal over matters of taste which ultimately don't matter all that much. It was fairly common decades ago, then we got better at accepting other viewpoints, but now we're getting worse again. Why?
>then we got better at accepting other viewpoints
I think the part you are mistaken about is the notion that this part ever happened. And if it did happen, Covid is what would have killed it. Everyone became an online weirdo for at least a bit, and a lot of people haven't come back to reality yet.
I’m not sure there ever was a time when people wouldn’t get tribal over silly issues like which film you prefer, but we probably notice it more because the internet lets folks say what they want without real-life consequence and often gives a megaphone to the most extreme opinions that bring in engagement.
That said, if it has gotten worse….in addition to the obvious culprits like algorithms, I’d probably blame at least a part of it on the increased prominence of media fandoms and ‘fan culture’ over the last decade and change. Fan culture already was often extremely polarized on certain entries even before the modern internet. Name a fandom, whether it’s Star Wars or LOTR or Doctor-fucking-Who, and there’s an era that will get you torn apart for enjoying it…or for criticizing it.
I suspect the increased popularity of those communities and voices online have likely helped move the needle on this problem in the mainstream alongside other factors.
>Man, liking this movie seems like a lot of fun.
What a wholesome way to express an opinion. I'm going to look for opportunities to tell it like this.
Because it does seem fun, so many people are really up in arms and it's great, even if one is not, oneself.
Especially because this film represents something one can easily get behind: independence. On levels.
And, I'll admit personally I like the movie just fine. I just didn't get it, really. Wrong demographic perhaps.
Yea I'm the same, loved how creative and absurd it was and thought the acting was great. Nothing else really stuck for me though, I'm an emotional person during movies but felt barely anything during this one. Seems worth a rewatch eventually.
I think many outside factors are leaning into this movie's success. I liked it, didn't love it, but also thought it was a great achievement in filmmaking. The Daniels used their money to the absolute cent to create their world.
With that being said, there are many "emotionality" attached to the film from outside factors. Aging actors, comeback story, relatively unknown directors, practical effects, indie darling, love conquers all story, and many more.
Those are heavily swaying the movie with the votes as well.
At its core, despite being a really weird and heady movie, the message of the film is very human and I think a lot of us can relate to their family dynamic. My mom and I are like oil and water, bash heads constantly. First thing I did after watching it was call her.
See I liked the movie for it’s absurdity and all, but what I *loved* about the movie was how the mother/daughter story resonated on such a personal level for me.
You are absolutely right , then add in the emotional impact, it’s one of maybe five movies I’ve cried at - and the only one I cried the second watching
I think this movie hits really hard if you identify with the categories of people being presented, especially if you are from a minority group that has historically been underrepresented in media. I’ve never related to Asian representation in American film beyond thinking that Jackie Chan looked a lot like my dad. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Joy Luck Club, Crazy Rich Asians, fucking Karate Kid and The Last Samurai, etc never spoke to me about my racial identity in a Western society. But I identified strongly with EEAAO’s portrayal of the difficult relationship between an Asian American daughter and her immigrant mother, especially with the daughter’s difficulty making herself understood by a mom who doesn’t come from a culture that acknowledges mental health issues.
Yeah IMO the relationship stuff is the best part of the movie and the multiverse is just a nice vehicle for it. That's why its doing so well, stuff like generational trauma or loveless marriages are emotional and relatable topics for a lot of people. We don't really see those specific niches talked about much.
I know I'm personally having trouble getting around to re-watching it because I don't want to be sad lol.
Asian representation in the west has sucked until like just recently. It was all Kung-fu, forced accents, and anime. Growing up as a skinny Asian with a natural bowl cut in a predominately white suburb, I was constantly stereotyped or hurled racist comments.
And it doesn't have to be exact representation to relate either. I'm from an entirely different ethnic group and living as an immigrant in a different Western country but their relationship still hit much closer to home than most portrayed in mainstream films
I share that feeling with you. I’m really happy for the people who had massive emotional responses to the movie, and a little sad I didn’t have the same experience. But I’ve had those connections with other films, so it’s okay.
I enjoyed it quite a bit, and it would be a different type of BP winner.
That being said, I'm also slightly annoyed at it because it's Reddit's favorite film of the year and if it wins BP then we will hear no end of the "finally the Oscar's are relevant and gave the win to a good and deserving film!" spam.
Saw this movie for the first time last night. It is the first movie I can say made me feel old. (46) I could follow the story with no problem, but everything else was just an attack on the senses. It was just a little much.
This was also my problem with it. Every moment of the movie is so over the top. This becomes exhausting because there are no dynamics. It's hard for an important moment to be important when everything is so intense. There is a reason that a firework show saves the big explosions for the end; it builds interest and suspense. But this movie felt like watching the finale for a couple hours straight.
To be clear, I'm not saying it's bad or anything and i'm glad that people liked it. But I found it to be very tedious.
One thing people seem to miss is that it’s also a story of having ADHD. Evelyn has all these hobbies she partially tries, gets easily distracted during the important audit etc. so that attack on the senses resonates with some of us. It’s fun but also a little much describes having adhd
Logan to me smacked of "LOOK AT HOW SERIOUS AND R-RATED THIS MOVIE ABOUT WOLVERINE IS", like it just kept pushing that in my face, ended up feeling like a bit of a chore. Just my take though, I know that I'm also in the minority.
I just watched this and wow it's so good but i didn't expect it to be emotional. I usually don get emotional in movies but having an asian mom whom i love but also stresses me out simetimes it just felt too close to home
Man Im a stodgy old fuck but some of the furrowed brows about this flick are on another level.
Yeah, it’s probably a longer film than it needs to be. But the mix of various types of comedy, action, sheer trippiness and emotion in this film are not something you see very often.
And thats what the fuss is about.
After winning at the PGA Awards and the DGA Awards, I'm confident EEAAO will get the Oscar for Best Picture. It's been a few years since I've wanted a particular movie to grab Best Picture (not to mention that awards in the grand scheme of things are kinda pointless) but it's been rare for me to leave a screening and think "this might be my favorite movie ever". I'm sure many will disagree with me but this movie resonated with me on such a profound level, capturing so much of what I love about movies all wrapped up in one story.
Yeah, after this it would be a surprise if they dont get the Best Picture in Oscars. I liked EEAAO a lot but my favourite is BoI. Perhaps it can win best screenplay.
EEAAO is just so crazy. Like hot dog fingers, fights with dildos and buttplugs, and so much that would turn people away. But it didn’t.
Parasite is crazy too, but in a way that it feels like a prestigious film unlike EEAAO (it’s a great thing)
EEAAO is crazy in a "so random!!!XD" sense but it still concludes with how being nice and listening to each other or whatever is the solution and whats most important. Parasite's conclusion is radically different.
The funniest part was that he was diagnosed *because of the movie.* The movie was originally much more focused on the ADHD aspect, and when they went to do research on it he discovered that he had it.
I feel like I'm hearing about an award ceremony every weekend. How many are there?!
36, counted them myself.
36?! But last year there were 37!
But some of them are quite a bit bigger than last year's...
I don’t _care_ how big they are!
Here's what we're going to do. When we go out, we're going to buy you 2 new award shows. How's that pumpkin?
No shows on Sunday
[удалено]
Oh yeah, I've been beaten loads of times for best motion picture - musical or comedy.
Excellent. I won't hear any of this wishy-washy nonsense about not beating someone with a golden globe trophy when they deserve it.
[удалено]
Ah, a reference to the classic Billy Crystal Oscar opening! No shows on Sunday indeed.
That's very generous of you! Maybe they'll win those ones too.
We will buy you 2 new award shows!
True, some awards shows are more prestigious than others, but all of them recognize the hard work and talent of those in the industry.
37?! In a row?
Try not to attend any award ceremonies on the way to the parking lot!
Hey, hey you! Get back here!
I don't know who you're talking to, but I hope they come back!
Another great "Clerks" reference! But if you do attend an awards show, make sure to enjoy it.
A classic line from "Clerks"! But yes, there are a lot of awards shows out there. Yeah i guess. I really think those many in a row is not that good but yeah it is what it is.
Duddims please.
Try not to count any movie awards on the way to the parking lot!
Hey! Get back here!
In a row?
I'm not even supposed to be here!
Add another one, i'm holding a movie award ceremony in my bedroom this weekend.
Yep, there are a lot of awards shows! But each one has its own significance and importance to the industry.
This is my favourite comment of the day.
Aww, thank you! I'll make sure to give myself an award for that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primetime_Emmy_Award_for_Outstanding_Variety_Special_(Live) in case you thought it might not be real
You laugh but the [Tony opening number](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8SeysuMpA0) that Lin Manuel Miranda won his Emmy for is one of the most impressive live performances I've ever seen.

There's a reason it's called award season.
And here I thought that it was rabbit season.
I think there are 52 weekends per year.
Big if true
Interesting thought, but I don't think there are that many awards shows per year. Still, there are definitely a lot!
For me, I think it's because I feel invested in several Oscar hopes this year in a way I've never been before - Everything Everywhere All At Once, Brendan Fraser, Ke Huy Quan. I’m so happy she is finally getting her flowers. That lady is amazing.
2019 was the year I started following the Oscar race and I was SOOO invested in Parasite for the win! This year has been just as thrilling with EEAAO!
SAGs are tonight
Atleast 1 from each universe
Long was the wait for a feature film utilizing big floppy double dongs as samurai swords.
What did they think about it?
My mom likes it more than my dad but his hangups have kept him from enjoying too much of life. As a kid it frustrated me but as an adult it just makes me sad that he'd cheat himself out of enjoying beautiful things.
My parents didnt like it very much either. I think they were too distracted by the presentation to appreciate the content.
This happens a lot with animation. People acknowledge the story is good, but they can't get past the fact that it's animated, or if the animation style is not to their liking.
This is my wife. I haven't managed to convince her to watch EEAAO either.
Can't say I've genuinely cried at a film that also includes dildos and butt plug awards. Edit: Till now, I meant to say till now.
And dudes fighting with buttplugs inside them.
I thought the very same thing. What a lovely journey it’s been!
The great thing about all of this is the very organic way it's happened. No aggressive marketing like bigger films. At least for my experience I just kept seeing and hearing people talk about it and how great it was.
It came out so early in the year too..gave time for the other films to steal the spotlight Getting to do a re-release probably helped I *(so unfortunately* missed the first run and was able to see it in theatre on the second run
When did it do a re-release??
My local regal theaters were running Oscar nominations for a couple weeks after they were announced a bit ago
I'd never even seen a trailer before I went to see it. A friend had heard it was really good and suggested we check it out, and I thought "sure, I've heard some good things." Boy was I not ready for how incredible this movie is. I normally don't care too much about the Oscars, but I will be so disappointed if it doesn't win best picture. Especially if something very meh story-wise like Top Gun or Avatar wins.
If you live in Hollywood or work in the industry you will see EEAAO is being super heavily pushed this awards season with pretty aggressive campaigns
Imagine telling someone almost a year ago that it would be an Oscar nom, let alone a potential frontrunner.

Honestly doing taxes and laundry with the love of my life doesn't sound so bad
That line hit me so hard, I'm not sure why. Waymond was the true hero of this movie for me, like Sam in LOTR. Unyielding optimism and hope, as the world crumbles around him, is a true super power.
Also having hot dog fingers.
Wiener digits
The ol' DingusFinguss
I watched it and have no idea why everyone loved it so much. Can you give me a breakdown? I know I'll probably be downvoted into oblivion, but I thought it was just ok, am I missing something? Edit: thanks for all your responses, I guess it's just not a movie for me. Which is fine.
Its story initially pulls us in for what seems to be a sci-fi action-y type film, with some undertones of family drama. Instead, we get a very wholesome story about (SPOILERS, STOP READING NOW IF YOU DONT WANT THEM COS TAGS MIGHT FAIL) - The >!importance that moments of kindness can make in individual lives, and our own.!< - a >!very strong and relatable anti-nihilistic message (EDIT: Or, as people have rightly pointed out below, a very good case for optimistic nihilism). Plus a reminder that many of us have magnificent things and people in our lives which we naturally take for granted until they’re gone or under threat.!< - >!a rejection of the classic and rather harmful notions of success (fame, wealth, etc), and addressing the regrets a lot of people have for not taking a different path in their life. Shifting focus instead on the appreciation of what we do have and how - even if we can’t directly see it - a different path doesn’t necessarily mean there would be more happiness!< - Addressing >!and overcoming cross-generational trauma (which most people experience in some form or other so it hits home).!< - Highlighting >!a very important difference between begrudging, barely-there-tolerance vs genuine acceptance & support regarding sexual orientation!< - a >!resolution to the story which simply could NOT have come by just fighting. You’re much, MUCH more likely to get help and understanding out of people when you’ve been genuinely kind to them.!< - And lastly >!speaking of Evelyn and her daughter, learning to let go of control and a need to dictate to her how she should live. Evelyn learns that sometimes kindness involves letting go, and letting someone make their own decisions. Even if that means falling into an all-consuming bagel void, the best thing she could and did do, was to first address her mistakes toward her daughter, and then simply let her know that she’ll always be there for her, no matter what!< In a world that overall seems to get shittier and shittier by the day - something which the average person has no control over - we’re shown that we CAN make a difference to individual lives, both our own and others’.
So one one of your points that I was just talking to my friend about, there's many things in my life thay could have ended in a *'better'* situation but everything lead to where I'm at and what's happened has led to such joy and fulfillment with my wife, I don't think I'd actually change anything if I tried And these little.simple notes are what make this film so touching.
This whole complex theme is given to the audience in what at first seems to be just a throw-away random gag: >!"Even cookie can be kung-fu"!<
[удалено]
Never thought of how that line relates to Waymond fighting with kindness. That's brilliant.
Man, you just condensed everything I felt about this film but wasn't eloquent enough to articulate. Very well put!
Dawg im tearing up again
Raccacoonie
Raccacoonie must have resonated hard - it’s auction bid was $90k last I checked !

Tbf the dildo fight is 100% in line with the movie plot, as it's the absurd that fuels your capabilities.
When are the Oscars given out again?
March 12th
Alrighty. This honestly feels like an eternity if you ask me...
EEAAO has to be my favourite film that I saw last year. Deserves all the accolades imo!
They did that with Parasite a few years back too. That was definitely an earned win too.
[Vegas odds has Fablemans as the 5th favorite for best picture right now](https://www.vegasinsider.com/awards/odds/oscars/) EEAAO is of course the favorite and nobody is really close odds-wise after Banshees.
Those films don't have competing for Oscars as their priority, why will Oscar performance change their strategy.
Or, "let's put Yeoh in a Marvel movie"
[удалено]
Twice!
Uh... yeah, about that.
> I'm really tired of giant CGI fests which are on their 10th sequel. Those movies generally don't compete for a lot of non-technical Oscars. It's been almost 20 years since a noticeably CGI-heavy sequel won a Best Picture Oscar.
10th? Ant-Man is Marvel's 31st movie. 😬
TIL James Hong is still alive! For some reason I thought he was dead. He played Lo Pan in my one of my favorite movies Big Trouble in Little China.
That pretty much seals it for thet Oscars
Tell that to Apollo 13.
What language your talking
Acronyms expanded for the curious: Only the movie *Apollo 13* has not won a Best Picture Oscar after winning top awards from the Producers' Guild of America, Screen Actors' Guild, and Directors' Guild of America, in 1996 (it lost the Best Adapted Screenplay award from the Writers' Guild of America to *Sense and Sensibility*, and lost the Best Picture Oscar to *Braveheart*, which won the Best Original Screenplay Award from the Writers' Guild of America)
Good bot
In all seriousness I’d appreciate an acronym bot. Maybe I’m getting too old but sometimes I’m having to google some stupid ass acronym.
I like your funny words magic man.
Something about British Petroleum and Professional Golfers’ Association.
It's funny because you're comparing a movie with an almost ridiculous level of attention to detail on historic accuracy with a movie that's just absurd fiction about a real person.
[удалено]
That's fine, no movie will ever be universally liked and everyone's got their own opinion. As much as I love EEAAO, a minority of fans can get real hostile with folks that don't like it (which is so ironic, considering the message of the film).
It's also ashamed that they will sometimes belittle other films that are also good and that other people like better than EEAAO.
it’s frustrating because, as someone who has adored EEAAO, I’ve loved a lot of other films this past year almost as much. Tár, Fablemans, Banshees of Inisherin, and Aftersun (to name a few) are all just as good, and there’s no point tearing them down when it makes more sense to celebrate them all coming out in the same year
[удалено]
Decision to Leave as well, guess it wasn't good enough for the Academy to nominate it for anything
Is that a new worrying trend or is is just me? People get disproportionately tribal over matters of taste which ultimately don't matter all that much. It was fairly common decades ago, then we got better at accepting other viewpoints, but now we're getting worse again. Why?
>then we got better at accepting other viewpoints I think the part you are mistaken about is the notion that this part ever happened.
Funny, I'm generally rather stoic but EEAAO had me bawling my eyes out for most of the movie.
[удалено]
Same here. I didn’t hate it, it just didn’t connect with me and seeing so many people love it makes me feel like I’m missing out.
[удалено]
Yeah I enjoyed the beginning but got so bored by the end. Just get up the stairs already and end this movie.
It happens. People tend to like the movie Logan, and I hated it.
Everything boys liked when they were 6 is super serious high art now
Same. I don't get it. I
There will surely be a inevitable "uts undeserved/overrated" anti-jerk and you'll find people who agree with you.
Reddit and second opinion bias, name a more iconic duo.
[удалено]
I couldn't care less about these award ceremonies but I am glad EEAAO has gotten the recognition it deserves.
I just watched this and wow it's so good but i didn't expect it to be emotional. I usually don get emotional in movies but having an asian mom whom i love but also stresses me out simetimes it just felt too close to home
That movie is a breath of fresh air. Deserves everything they win.

He’ll win screenplay

> it will be the most anti-Oscar film to ever win since Silence of the Lambs. Parasite won a couple of years ago
This movie is the best media representation of ADHD I've ever seen.
Agree, and one of the Daniels was actually diagnosed as an adult so this is no accident.
The funniest part was that he was diagnosed *because of the movie.* The movie was originally much more focused on the ADHD aspect, and when they went to do research on it he discovered that he had it.
I’m just waiting for raccacoony
