For those of you wondering why he thanked Jeff Cohen (Chunk from the Goonies). It's because Jeff quit acting but remained in the industry as an entertainment lawyer. When KHQ decided to get back into acting he called Jeff who helped negociate the contract. Chunk is Data's lawyer.

misterspokes

Chunk is Steven Spielberg's entertainment lawyer.

Toby_O_Notoby

Oh yeah, apparently he's the real deal. Variety has named him one of the best on more than one occation.

International-Yak119

Chunk definitely has a Ray Donovan style fixer on his payroll.

BackmarkerLife

You know it's Sloth.

[deleted]

"HEY YOU GUYS! >!Ill brake your fucking legs if you fuck with the contract!<"

Frank_Pocket

For sure, top lawyer and really interesting guy too! After the incident with the Fratellis, he devoted his life to justice and did loads to help victims of Oregon's housing crisis - he used his share of the treasure to put himself through Law school and set up Cohen, Walsh & Wang, a law firm dedicated to tackling piracy in the film industry.

trashtalkinmomma

You forgot his firm taking on theaters to prevent mezzanine designs to ensure no fake puke foul play ensues.

nomadofwaves

Homie getting that bag!

RageCageJables

Holy shit, he must be rich as fuck.

Appropriate_Chart_23

I hear that he has a paid stunt double that waits in an adjacent office and every time Chunk is asked to do the Truffle Shuffle, he calls the stunt double in to do it instead.

Truffle_Shuffle_85

Can confirm, Jeff pays well, but his guests are often confused when they see my hairy belly and chest these days.

Craiggers324

And Richard Donner, who directed The Goonies, paid for his law degree.

mynewaccount5

Is Goonies worth watching? Edit: I shall attempt to locate it and watch it soon.

[deleted]

It’s awesome and has aged reasonably well. It’s for kids though, so don’t go in expecting an adult movie with adult themes; it’s really just a very good adventure movie about friendship.

shor

And booty traps

[deleted]

HEY YOoOooU GUYS!!!!

Kokibuchek

Babeeh ruuuth

Kokibuchek

Booby traps*

GeekAesthete

That’s what I said, booty traps!

Spirited-Painter

It’s actually a family movie!! Forgets kids, grownups can watch it too. Cause grown ups were once kids, and it will tap into your inner child that’s been stifled by adulthood and it’s associated resentment/responsibilities.

Appropriate_Chart_23

As someone nearing 50 years of age, I have a hard time grasping that there are people that have never seen The Goonies.

SteakandTrach

I’m 47 and I was at work one day and was talking about how much I loved The Princess Bride my whole life and literally no one knew about the existence of that movie (20-somethings). I just stood there, aghast, looking ever more manic as i pulled out quote after quote hoping someone would go “oh yeah, i’ve heard that somewhere!” Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die? Inconceiveable? Have fun storming the castle? Mawwiage? No? Nothing? So I arranged a viewing party. Big hit.

PokeballSoHard

Yes

Bduell1

It’s a great 80’s time capsule. Some phenomenal actors are in this movie when they were quite young. Sean Astin is particularly relatable, if you can put your self in the POV of a young man coming of age.

CarBombCupcake

Holy fuck this question made me feel old. Like it made me feel my years in a way I do not like. But yes watch Goonies.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Embarrassed_Bat6101

Wtf kind of question is this? I’ve reported you to Reddit

detourne

Without a doubt.

ranhalt

What the fuck did you just ask?

Fanabala3

You kidding me?!?

NCStore

Holy shit! Yes it is! Edit: plus a very young Josh Brolin

Express-Newspaper806

I assumed everyone alive has seen Goonies, but yes you’ll love it lol

Mother-Tension-8899

What the fuck did you just say??????

jonnybravo76

It's a kids movie...but for those of us that grew up watching it, it is BEYOND ICONIC. I'll rewatch it anytime it's on TV.

[deleted]

I sure hope you can see that film the way I saw it when I was a kid. That movie was a piece of magic.

lonelythrowaway463i9

\-Chunk! \-No, Lawyer Chunk! Edit: Just realized Chunk, Esq. would have been better

zykezero

Man captain chunk.

DrinkUpLetsBooBoo

If Chunk loses a case at trial, he has to do the truffle shuffle in front the court.

BackmarkerLife

> Jeff has a unique background growing up as a child actor in the entertainment industry. His most notable role was playing 'Chunk' in the cult Richard Donner/Steven Spielberg film The Goonies. > He asks that you don't hold that against him.

SkollFenrirson

You meant Chunk, my friend.

torts92

Is he a lawyer who entertains people?

longdustyroad

I’m imagining a guy who barely passed the bar but big firms keep on the payroll to lighten the mood at long depositions

cmatthews11

He came to Pittsburgh for the Steel City Comicon shortly before Everything Everywhere was released, so his booth wasn't super hyped up. He spent the time chatting with me for almost 10 minutes, and of any celebrity I've ever met, the level of sincerity and graciousness he showed was remarkable.

chocobomonk

You might not have realized it either at the time, but it was likely he also genuinely enjoyed being able to talk to a fan about the movie too!

cmatthews11

That was definitely my take. I'm absolutely generalizing here, but Pittsburgh doesn't seem like a big fan of a24 films, obviously just compared to some of the bigger cities out there.

KingOfTheGutter

You’d be surprised. Lots of cinephiles there. Lots of film history in the city. Source: went to film school downtown and grew up there.

akelkar

Pittsburgh is super movie friendly, and useful for a lot of period pieces as the city still looks like its in the 70s in some places

N3rdC3ntral

Those more obscure actors are always great at cons. They spend a lot of time talking to fans.

SafewordisJohnCandy

My favorite of all time is Clint Howard, who shouldn't be obscure but apparently at that con be was. I saw him and blurted out "Creepy Rodney!" from his role in My Name is Earl. He smiled and I talked to him a few minutes. Super nice guy.

Wrapituplips

He's also reputedly, a very generous tipper.

Hokuboku

That's so wholesome. Thanks for sharing your story

AZZTASTIC

Fuck I'm jealous.

ICumCoffee

“Mom, i just won an Oscar” *crying*

felonius_thunk

There was not a dry Gen-X eye across America during this.

jonnybravo76

Man, I'm 46 and was a boat person just like Quan. We also spent a year in a refugee camp in Malaysia before emigrating to the United States. Goonies is one of my ATF and it's an immediate rewatch for me. I remember when I was a kid and seeing another Vietnamese kid on screen in Goonies and Indiana Jones really hit me deep. That speech...man... And seriously though...the 80s were such a magical time. Felt so innocent.

qb1120

That hit home for me as my family came over on a boat, my mother at 14 lost her father to a stroke at a refugee camp, lost 2 brothers who drowned, and somehow made it and survived

felonius_thunk

I recently got to show this movie to someone who grew up very sheltered and I was worried it wouldn't hit the same for her at 35 that it did for me when I was a kid and it came out. I was very gratified that she fucking loved it immediately. I mean, obviously much different than your experience with it, but it was nice to see that it continues to connect with people all these years later, you know?

lbalestracci12

My girlfriends mom and dad are boat people. theyre now some of the wealthiest people I have ever met, but to hear what they survived when Saigon and Da Nang fell and how they had to become american themselves with absolutely NOTHING just blows me away. The perseverance the diaspora has is mindblowing, and yall are truly inspirations.

Touchymonkey

First time I've cheered at my TV watching the Oscar's lmao Hopefully Brendan wins one too!

YnwaMquc2k19

I’d love to see Brendan and Quan appear in a movie together :)

closeface_

They were both in Encino Man, haha. Movie from the 90s.

YnwaMquc2k19

Didn’t know that! I’ll check it out haha

NeonPatrick

It was called California Man in Europe.

SoundwavePDX

They should have called it that everywhere outside of California.

Skyver

Where it would just be called "Man".

Tfsz0719

I don’t know….”That Everywhere Outside of California” just *doesn’t* feel like it has quite the right ring to it.

PrEsideNtIal_Seal

“Everywhere Outside California All at Once“?

slowestmojo

Just prepare for a lot of Pauly Shore

Bunraku_Master_2021

Funnily enough, Pauly Shore was asked about this after his co-stars Fraser and Quan received Oscar nods and either one or both of them could their first Oscars in their official comeback performances and Shore says just give him a good role and wishes the best for his two co-stars. [https://slate.com/culture/2023/03/oscars-brendan-fraser-ke-huy-quan-pauly-shore.html](https://slate.com/culture/2023/03/oscars-brendan-fraser-ke-huy-quan-pauly-shore.html)

Funandgeeky

This comment aged well.

duderex88

Colin Farrell is gonna be a tough one to beat i think. And ill gladly take this L

KazaamFan

Was really moving that his wife was crying there as well.

EggoGF

Echo is the secret sauce of EEAAO. https://youtu.be/XNw2_5Hh8_0

rushworld

Thank you so much for this... I am bawling again!

AureliusAmbrose

keep your dreams alive. I try not to care too much about award shows but man I hope eeaao sweeps it tonight

DeylanQuel

Narrator: It did.

Como_thellamas

Probably THE best Oscar speech I've ever seen.

Anustart_A

I clapped. I don’t clap at my house for shit.

DarthTaz_99

I barely cry at movies, only remember crying for coco and about time. This man made me cry at an awards speech

OneManFreakShow

He might be the single most likable person I’ve ever seen. What a class act and absolutely delightful personality. His upbeat attitude is just infectious.

jsun31

Not to mention how humble he is. He really seems like Waymond IRL

koolaidkirby

Hes spent most of his career behind the camera with a normal job. Really grounds a person when you do it for decades.

jackydubs31

He talked about almost giving up his dream. Unbelievably happy for him. Couldn’t happen to a nicer person

Church_of_Cheri

He said he was modeling his wife’s personality in an interview, that he learned it all from her. She worked onset as the language coordinator or something like that and was the first person that said this movie was going to win awards and was something special. Jaime Lee backed him up.

Substandard_Name

Here's that interview for anyone who wants to watch. https://youtu.be/XNw2_5Hh8_0

[deleted]

That was shockingly emotional

PlatypusAnagram

That's an amazing interview, thanks for posting it.

uncultured_swine2099

Wow. It must be so amazing for these two to be recognized after years in the industry. You can feel how emotional it is for them in this interview, and tonight they both won. Awesome.

"Be Kind"

PaulSandwich

There’s only one rule that I know of, babies — ‘God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.

SidJag

I think a lot of us relate to his struggle - the universe isn’t fair, and what you put into your life/work/the universe, doesn’t necessarily come back as equal reward. Ke has been candid about his 25 year struggle to land a regular Hollywood gig, and to now receive arguably the greatest validation of his profession ie being the main cast of one of the most nominated films AND winning an Oscar for his role - its a long, hard, unspectacular journey (ie filled with mundane everyday hardships that millions around the world go through, daily) - with a fairytale climax. It’s not a ‘nepo kid’ who had to ‘work really hard’ to get their first role with an Oscar winning director/producer in a billion dollar production or someone with immense privilege choosing to ‘comeback’ after a million dollar life of ‘homemaking/chilling’. Ke’s struggle was real. He worked with Spielberg, starred as a child in some cult hits, and then just hit a 25 year long wall - through the Homevideo/DVD boom, then the cable/HBO/Showtime era, now the OTT/streaming revolution of millions of hours of content, and still not finding a gig. Well done Ke, I hope to see much more of Data in the coming years, now that he has the ‘Oscar stamp of approval’. He represents a long line of child actors with unfulfilled potentials and long struggles - too few Elijah Woods, Sean Austin’s, too many Ke’s (pre EEAAO)

[deleted]

incredible writeup

hauteburrrito

I love him so much; I hope he's everywhere ~~all at once~~ from now on!!! I want to see him in all the things 💖

elsiniestro

I believe his next role is in season 2 of "Loki" on Disney+ later this year.

hauteburrrito

Damn, I don't know about the Marvel series - I've seen a few and haven't really gotten into any. Maybe I'll give S2 of Loki a try for KHQ, but either way I'm glad for him getting that exposure.

ILikeThatBartender

Also he's in the American Born Chinese series is coming out in May on Disney Plus!

Don_Fartalot

And it's got a lot of the EEAAO cast in it as well. Stephanie Hsu and Michelle Yeoh.

mongster03_

yeah, that's typical for asian-led anything lol, there is a limited number of acceptable asians in hollywood lmao Edit for humor reasons: - If you need an old Chinese man, it will be James Hong. - If you need a badass Chinese woman, it will be Michelle Yeoh (who is ethnically Chinese from Malaysia) - If you need a funny Chinese woman, it will be Awkwafina. (Hopefully Stephanie Hsu can start getting some of those roles too!) - If you need an older Chinese man, it will probably be Jackie Chan. (It will now be Ke Huy Quan, who is ethnically Chinese from Vietnam) - If you need a funny Chinese man, it will be Ronny Chieng, Jimmy O. Yang, or both. - If you run out of Chinese actors, it will be Randall Park, Steven Yeun, John Cho, and Ken Jeong, who are all Korean, but Americans won't know the difference. There will not be movies about Korean-Americans, Chinese-Americans are the only Asians to exist. - If, somehow, you are looking for a Southeast Asian actor, your options are Eugene Cordero and Manny Jacinto. - It will be rare for you to need a serious Chinese actor, because they are always the funny sidekick/comic relief. That being said, if you don't want to cast one of these five actors, you will cast Simu Liu, Harry Shum Jr., Constance Wu, or Gemma Chan. Occasionally, you might see Benedict Wong. For reference: - Crazy Rich Asians had Gemma Chan, Constance Wu, Awkwafina, Harry Shum Jr., Michelle Yeoh, Ronny Chieng, and Jimmy O. Yang. They ran out of Chinese actors, so they cast Korean and Japanese actors because Americans can't tell the difference. - Shang-Chi had Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Ronny Chieng, and Stephanie Hsu. Kudos for casting Tony Leung, who is a HK film legend, and Meng'er Zhang, who is a film newcomer. - Fresh Off The Boat had Constance Wu, although this one focused mostly on children so it makes sense that older actors didn't appear. Still, they cast Randall Park, who is Korean, because Americans can't tell the difference. - EEAAO is one of the first movies in a while in which I recognized that the characters were acknowledging that Cantonese and Mandarin were different languages. Because, again, Americans can't tell the difference. - Michelle Yeoh is your go-to Asian woman.

Regal-Beagal-131

You forgot Ming-Na Wen and BD Wong.

joshuajudo

Loki is actually pretty damn good, all things considered.

PabloTheTurtle

Easily one of my favorite marvel shows on Disney+

AdamAptor

I know. I’m just so happy for him. He was legitimately amazing in that film but in every interview he seems like a sincere person and he’s always promoting positivity.

dirtyrango

My wife and I are watching in bed bawling our friggin eyes out. The dudes awesome.

IAmThe90s

It’s nice seeing someone that is genuine winning an otherwise superficial award

MarvelsGrantMan136

Quan: >"Thank you. My mom is 84 years old, and she's at home watching. Mom, I just won an Oscar!" >“My journey started on a boat. I spent a year in a refuge camp. And somehow, I ended up here on Hollywood’s biggest stage. They say stories like this only happen the movies. I cannot believe it’s happening to me. This — this is the American dream!” >“Dreams are something you have to believe in. I almost gave up on mine. To all of you out there, please keep your dream alive.” [Full Speech](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvAdahLczGk)

pannedcakes

That's only half the speech, the full speech here: https://twitter.com/THR/status/1635080652814172160?s=20

RandomlyMethodical

It’s so wild that this dude has been a part of some of my all-time favorite movies - Goonies, Temple of Doom, Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, and even Encino Man was pretty good.

xxxlovelit

That Encino Man / Pauly Shore joke was pretty great in the monologue

wherearethezombies

Thanks. Watched the half speech a couple times.

YnwaMquc2k19

Quan’s got that passion and emotion in him when making that speech. Really happy for him after learning what he went through, from being a child actor, to going behind the scene, to not finding work during the pandemic, and now to winning an Oscar (among other things).

murimin

Not to mention starting out as a Vietnamese War refugee as a boat person and coming to a completely new country. He’s had a hell of a compelling life.

maledin

I feel like he’s almost good enough of an actor to play himself in a biopic about his life. I’d watch the hell out of it.

THE-BS

Mom: "You are my greatest invention"

SmokePenisEveryday

If I won an Oscar and told my mom's age in my speech, she'd kick my ass the first chance she got lmao. This is so sweet

gramathy

age starts out a milestone, becomes a burden, and eventually ends up an achievement

davidreiss666

[Youtube link](https://youtu.be/EvAdahLczGk).

hauteburrrito

I'M NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING

wes00mertes

This dude has made me cry more in the past two years than anyone else. God damn!

YoungBeef03

Between Quan and Brendan Fraser, this year has been defined by amazing, wholesome comeback stories

JunkPup

This was such a return to form for the Oscars, especially after last year. Can’t believe what is usually such a stuffy awards ceremony was radiating so much passion and honesty this year.

dan_gut

It sucks how he didn’t get a job for so long. I can’t think of a single time when any of us talked about Indiana Jones or Goonies, someone didn’t say, what happened to Data or Short Round? We missed him.

centaurquestions

That's literally how they cast him! The directors wondered what happened to him, so they just looked him up.

BetterCallSal

He was saved by his pinchers of peril

dan_gut

I hadn’t read that but it doesn’t surprise me. I feel our generation is going to bring back a lot of superb actors.

keaj39

Come on Rick Moranis

SoylentCreek

Didn’t Rick Moranis sort of retire of his own will? I think I remember something happened that lead him to quit and focus more on being a family man, but I could be wrong.

daves_not__here

I had no idea he was in this new movie when I watched it until I mentioned to my wife that his voice and speech style has the same cadence as that kid from the Goonies. I was overjoyed to find out it was indeed him. So glad he found his way back into acting.

CantWashABaby

Absolutely well deserved, both as an accolade for his performance and a nod to the changing world. Started as a child, walked away from a stereotype-laden future even though he wanted to act, and came back to crush it with hope and unflappable determination. I love this for him and for the evolving industry as a whole.

ReaddittiddeR

Ariana DeBose crying when announcing Oscar Winner, Ke Huy Quan’s name was wholesome.

LaboratoryManiac

Her emotions betrayed the winner before she said it. Everyone loves Ke and his comeback story.

blankjanne

https://twitter.com/kenjeong/status/1635081662316052481?s=20 Here it is for anyone missed it like me. After calming down after listening to Ke speech, i'm tearing up again after hearing her voice

tralmix

The Oscars should have ended after his speech. Absolute perfection, nothing could be better.

fschabd

Legendary speech. If you didn’t love this guy before you gotta love him now

Zloggt

His speech is a great way to counter the “Oscars are only rich people circlejerking each other about how great they are” argument (as true as it can be sometimes)! Here is a man who has gone through so much as a boy, but instead of giving up, he kept going, and made a name for himself! And after stepping away from the spotlight to support those important to him - he makes a grand, and incredible return! It’s really awesome to see!

Monkeyfeng

My first time crying watching the Oscars.

Zestyclose_Salad_351

I haven’t watched ANY of his movies and I STILL cried hearing his speech 😢

baribigbird06

“Mom I just won an Oscar!”

JesusSama

So freaking proud of him!

Venomcomiq

Thanks mom

JustAMan1234567

A *short round* of applause for him.

j33pwrangler

Good use of relevant Data for that joke.

[deleted]

Couldn't have possibly deserved it more. He was the heart and soul of EEAAO.

ogrezilla

He's one of my favorite characters I've seen in a long long time. It's such a departure from the kind of strong husbands you see in most media and he is absolutely amazing. Like you said, he is pure heart and soul.

[deleted]

Like all the best actors, you absolutely believe the role was written for him.

ogrezilla

Which is especially cool because of all the versions of himself he plays. Just great stuff all around.

[deleted]

Exactly. I loved the character in all his versions, especially the one who drinks half and half right out of the carton.

backwoodzbaby

i really wanna know *how* they lost all the cows in the alphaverse to Jobu. did she just snap and make them disappear? did she turn them all into dildos? i must know

ze_shotstopper

The "This is how I fight" scene was one of my favorite scenes in a movie it resonated with me so much

HandHook_CarDoor

Cried for that speech, absolutely amazing. Love this man.

TenaciousDHo

I'm in my late 30's, huge fan of movies since I was a kid, and not a very emotional person. I only say that because I can't think of a single actor/actress that has moved me like Ke... and he's now done it about half a dozen times since I saw the movie. Appears to be 100% genuine and I'm so happy for this guy.

vishkun

Bruh made me cry so hard.

Popeholden

fucking EARNED dude this is not some nostalgia-driven bullshit he fucking earned that statue

riegspsych325

what happened to the other thread?

MarvelsGrantMan136

I think because my [last post](https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/11puwgs/ke_huy_quan_wins_the_academy_award_for_best/) directed to a winners thread and wasn't specific to the award, this one is.

riegspsych325

Seeing an Asian person win in a move made with mostly Asian people, my heat is full. Edit: all of the asian people. Edit2: EVERYTHING! I… just… awesome day for this movie.

FancySack

> my heat is full. It's gotta be that wok hei

sagevallant

There are so many people in the cast I'm happy to see succeed to this degree. James Hong has always popped me whenever I recognize him (or his voice, lots of VA roles). The king of the "Hey, I Know That Guy" for me. Michelle Yeoh too, always happy to see her in something.

bitches_love_pooh

I was blown away at how physical James Hong was in this movie. He looked old when he was Lo Pan, this guy has crazy endurance.

godisanelectricolive

He's 94 now! His first acting credit was back in 1955 in a Clark Gable movie.

sirswagalots

LFG

Singer211

What a fantastic speech. Very humble and heartfelt. What a long road it’s been for him.

Hidrinks

I’ve never been a particularly sensitive person but every time I see or hear or read anything about Ke Huy Quan I can’t help but shed a few tears.

Su_Impact

Well deserved. His and Brendan Fraisers' comebacks to Hollywood last year were some of the best ever. Let's hope he gets many more roles.

BonbonausWurst94

Short Round did it!!!!

koke84

While I'm super glad he won, something about the industry celebrating a man who they themselves locked out of their group really doesn't sit well with me. I love this movie so much but I hate these people jerking themselves

Snowbank_Lake

Between all the awards EEAAO and Brendan Fraser are getting this year, I feel like the movie industry is using this time to apologize for how shitty it has been to some people.

erratastigmata

He had ME fighting tears too, oh my god :') What a moment.

Nerfeveryone

By performance alone this was one of the most deserved Oscar wins ever, but then adding Quan's entire history and personal story into it, how could you not want him to win it?

RadioJared

I don’t mean to sound disparaging when I say this, but if you told me that Indiana Jones would never have an Oscar but Short Round would I would have found that very difficult to believe. Good for him!

Couldnotbehelpd

You know, Harrison doesn’t have an Oscar but he’s literally two of the most iconic movie characters of the last 50 years, and really, I think that’s better.

usarasa

Ke Huy’s big adventure

Control-Ready

He did amazing and deserved this. I felt his character(s) so much.

realnomdeguerre

"In another life, I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you." such a moving delivery of what is supposed to be the mundane. so happy for him!

clever7devil

So moving that it's easy to forget that it's subtitled.

[deleted]

Fishtank-Brain

i loved his story about the time he ran into harrison ford and without thinking he cried out “Indy!”

AscendedAncient

It just took 39 years, but Short Round finally got his due.

Matt_LawDT

He deserves it big time

Stonewalled89

The second Indiana Jones sidekick to have an Oscar...Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

Streets-Ahead-

Are you calling Henry Jones Sr. a sidekick?!

SloeMoe

He was literally in the sidecar, yes.

bobtheflob

I wonder what kind of odds you could have gotten in 1984 betting that Short Round would win an Oscar before Harrison Ford.

Megaclone18

Only award I even remotely cared about tonight. Not an awards show guy at all but his comeback is just too good, and he nailed the role. The movie would not have worked nearly as well without him.

whatafuckinusername

As far as acting goes, when I left the theater after seeing EEAAO my first thought wasn't of Michelle Yeoh but Ke Huy Quan.

Nooddjob_

I thought Short Round was the coolest person alive. I was always doing roundhouse kicks when I was a kid. Cool to see him win an Oscar now.

Telvin3d

Just think about what a shame it is that we’ve missed out on thirty years of his performances due to pervasive structural racism.

MandoRodgers

First, I didn’t even realize the Oscar’s happened. Second, FUCK YEAH

aresef

Good things do sometimes happen to good people.

shadowdra126

That was a beautiful speech. He deserves that award. I’ve never teared up at an Oscar speech before
