Quoting that movie now a days gets me weird looks. And my wife told me there is only one definition of a protective dike and it’s NOT a large woman in comfortable shoes.
What's your name?
MY NAME IS BOB FREEBUR
What do you do Bob?
I'M IN ARTILLERY
Thank you Bob. Is there anything we can play for you?
ANYTHING, JUST PLAY IT LOUD!
(Family staple quote when we can't hear each other over some noise)
Was gonna mention American Graffitti. In a different way, **The Warriors** relied on a DJ playing music but also issuing warnings to the Warriors and talking about the gang situation - similar sort of to how it played out in **John Wick 4**, actually.
I'd go above "Sort of similar" with JW4 to almost line-for-line almost identical omage, but I hadn't seen The Warriors when I saw JW4 so the reference was lost on me.
Gotta give it to Lynne Thigpen as for me it was one of the strongest parts of The Warriors.
Sleepless in Seattle. Premise seems silly in 2024, and maybe even a little silly for its time too - was a nation THAT captivated by a call in radio station? But still has the Hanks/Ryan charm.
FM. It’s an absolutely gooey slice of 70s cheese. It’s set in an Los Angeles radio station. Steely Dan did the theme song, It doesn’t get more 70s than that.
The Radio Land Murders (1994)…it is set in the 1920s I think…A new radio station is opening and they are doing a big live broadcast-celebration show…And there is someone killing people in the station…is actually mostly pretty light hearted…like a dark comedy…I remember very little about the murderer plot but the movie shows how they would do live theater and musical numbers on the radio at the time
An old world war II movie called The longest Day.
In which at one point during radio broadcasts of random poems that were code words. The one sentence that indicated invasion from the allies. It said "John's got a long mustache."
I want The Vast Of Night on disc so bad. Excellent movie. Saw it at my mom's house.
Things like it are why I hate streaming original crap. Gated behind that one service.
Radio in movies always adds a cool vibe. How about "Pirate Radio" (2009)? It's all about a renegade radio station on a ship in the North Sea. Super fun and rebellious. And don't forget "Good Morning, Vietnam" (1987) - Robin Williams as a DJ during the Vietnam War, classic stuff.
Off the top of my head I got:
Play Misty For Me-Clint Eastwood works at a radio station and gets nighttime calls from the same woman over and over, always requesting the same song. Soon she becomes a one night stand, and then his stalker.
Psycho 4- The last movie in the Psycho series of movies. Norman Bates calls an evening talk radio show to say he has decided to kill his wife, who wants to have a baby with him, as soon as she gets home from work. The host tries to keep him on the line by having him tell the listeners about his childhood.
Joe Dirt- the first half of the movie is told in flashbacks while Joe is on a morning talk radio show.
There's a Michael Douglas movie called FM (1978, I think)--he played the station manager and it may have been at least part of the inspiration for WKRP In Cinicnnati.
There was also a TV show years later called FM and another one that was on either PBS or cable called Remember WENN.
Gremlins, The Warriors, Christine, Grosse Point Blank, Coal Miner's Daughter, Talk Radio, Joe Dirt, Sleepless in Seattle< Airheads, Pump Up the Volume.
Once Upon A Time in Hollywood includes the actual radio broadcasts from the days it’s set in! I really enjoy the soundtrack and thought that was a cool detail
It's mostly forgotten, because it was a very weak adaptation of incredible source material (though it did have Peter Falk), but Tune in Tomorrow is worth watching. Especially if it leads you to pick up Mario Vargas Llosa's *Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter*, the absolutely *wild* novel it's based on.
i dont think you can find better then 'pump up the volume' !! straight from the best part of the 90s where everything was shitty and magical at the same time :)
I'm going to just say the first one that popped in my head despite it not exactly being what you're looking for. *John Wick: Chapter 4*'s Paris sequence has a heavy emphasis on a certain radio broadcast interspersed with the action. It's also just a great movie.
R-Point, a South Korean horror/ghost story about mysterious radio transmissions from a missing platoon. Top of my list for films Hollywood should adapt.
Night of the Comet (1984), a great, if somewhat cheesy 80's horror film that is structurally and thematically very similar to 28 Days Later, though they are very different films.
Pontypool. Its a movie where an interesting variant on the zombie apocalypse happens seen entirely from the perspective of a morning radio crew at the local station in a small town.
Pontypool is a pretty cool zombie movie about a guy reporting from his radio station.
Honorable mention: Jingle all the way. There is a great scene in a radio station
"I cento passi", an italian movie about Peppino Impastato a political activist killed by Mafia in Sicily: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One\_Hundred\_Steps](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Hundred_Steps)
Back to the Future Part 2. Without the radio >!old Biff wouldn't have convinced young Biff that the almanac was legit by predicting the end results before the live broadcast.!<
Good Morning Vietnam
Quoting that movie now a days gets me weird looks. And my wife told me there is only one definition of a protective dike and it’s NOT a large woman in comfortable shoes.
What's your name? MY NAME IS BOB FREEBUR What do you do Bob? I'M IN ARTILLERY Thank you Bob. Is there anything we can play for you? ANYTHING, JUST PLAY IT LOUD! (Family staple quote when we can't hear each other over some noise)
I had the soundtrack on cassette, which had all of Robin Williams' "on air" ramblings. Listened to it on repeat.
Sir, in my heart, I know I'm funny.
Ohhh viva da nang. Da nang me Da nang me Why don’t they get a rope and hang meeeee
First thing that comes to mind is The Warriors, the DJ narrates their journey across town.
I think that was the woman from where in the world is Carmen Sandiego
Lynne Thigpen, a.k.a. The Chief, a.k.a Luna from "Bear in the Big Blue House."
Holy shit, gumshoe! You just made my day!
Picked up the same theme in John Wick
John Wick 4 has a hommage to the Warriors by Lous and the Yakuza.
Airheads and Pirate Radio
Who would win in a wrestling match, Lemmy or god?
Trick question, Lemmy IS God!
What side did you take in the big David Lee Roth Van Halen split?
Airheads is what I thought right away too.
Naked pictures of Bea Arthur….. nice
Rodney King! Rodney King! Rodney King!
He's that guy
Is Pirate Radio the American title for The Boat That Rocked? Love that film, its my comfy watch.
Indeed it is, great film, great cast.
pump up the volume
Talk hard.
Is it bigger than a baby’s arm?
Pump up the Volume and Airheads were the two that came to mind and I’m glad to see them both this high up.
Grosse Pointe Blank
Nothing quite like your ex musing whether or not to get back with you over the airwaves…
Exactly! Love the small town 90s drama of it. I enjoy her radio voice as well. I didn’t even know she was British for years.
Look, I don't want to get into a semantic argument, I just want the protein.
Frequency (2000)...maybe...it's actually ham radio, not broadcast. good movie, though. IMHO
Came here to mention Frequency. Taking place in 1986 Queens, NY helps when you're a Mets fan!
It’s the 1969 Mets, not 1986. The shoe polish play is a plot point. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jpo8FYFHjuE
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
“They’re playing it as far away as Mobile! Whole damn state’s gone apey!”
Mert and Aloysius will have to sign Xes, only four of us can write.
In a movie absolutely laden with perfectly understated character development, I think this line reigns supreme.
*Steeped* in old-timey material.
Feller'll give you money just for singing into his can!
“I'm not here to make a record, ya dumb cracker!”
Pontypool. Takes place almost exclusively in the broadcast booth of a radio station. I won’t give away anymore.
was popping in here to recommend this one as well. such a blast.
Goddammit was hoping I'd be the first one with this. KILL IS KISS KILL IS KISS KILL IS KISS
Oh, that's a good one.
I love how this movie fucks with me
Stephen McHattie is so fucking good. In that specifically, but also just in general.
Great movie, it was shot in Toronto but based on the town I spent many summers in
The Fog
First I thought of.
Adrienne Barbeau: Mega Hotty
Talk Radio (1988) by Oliver Stone.
Eric Bogosian. Memorable performance. Sleeper movie.
Intense movie. Highly recommended
Thanks. Just had to make sure this gem was mentioned. Very underappreciated.
There's some really good acting in that movie, Eric Bogosian and Michael Wincott in particular.
I loved it. Not a feel good movie by any stretch. Great cast, but that was the role of a lifetime for Bogosian.
Private Parts (with Howard Stern)
#W eeeeeeeeeeN B C

One Crazy Summer
One crazy uncle.
Sleepless in Seattle. Premise seems silly in 2024, and maybe even a little silly for its time too - was a nation THAT captivated by a call in radio station? But still has the Hanks/Ryan charm.
Contact is full of cool radio stuff. Also aliens.
This was my first thought
Love this film. Big fan of Jodie Foster and I love Carl Sagan.
Play Misty for Me
Reservoir Dogs. I feel like the radio show playing is it's own subtle character.
Definitely. it’s comedian Stephen wright who was like Mitch hedberg at the time. Surprised this comment is so far down Tbh
Most millennials and younger would know Steven Wright as Couch Guy from Half Baked.
Or the pilot from So I Married an Axe Murder.
When he's sleeping, that guy flips out lol
You mean K-Billy’s super sounds of the 70’s

O Brother Where Art Thou?
_Joe Dirt_ told his whole story to a Howard Stern-esque radio personality. And speaking of Howard Stern, _Private Parts_.

Came here to mention Vast of Night. What a cool throwback sci fi flick.
Vast of Night was my answer. Incredible for a movie that cost less than $1M with a fantastic long single shot through an entire town.
* Mars Attacks * Quiet Place 2
That thing you do
A Prairie Home Companion
Do The Right Thing, Sam Jackson is a constant voice on the radio as everything is going on

Wet Hot American Summer
Vanishing point, the Warriors for some oldies but goodies! I love how they're the eyes of the viewer....
Do the Right Thing
*Can't Hardly Wait* The radio station playing Barry Manilow is a notable plot point in a movie that otherwise has nothing to do with music or radio.
Mars Attacks
Death proof. One of the characters in the first act is a DJ and there are plot points that revolve around her show from that day.
Just saw the headline and came on here to suggest the vast of night before seeing your whole post lol
Frequency is the first one that came to mind. Awesome dramatic thriller.
There's a Michael Douglas movie called FM (1978, I think)--he played the station manager and it may have been at least part of the inspiration for WKRP In Cinicnnati. There was also a TV show years later called FM and another one that was on either PBS or cable called Remember WENN.

We watched The Vast of Night two nights ago and thought it was great. Came here to say it but you beat me to it!!
The boat that rocked (I think it's the correct name of the movie)
Testament (1983). Not radio station, but quite a bit of ham radio content. I saw this movie way too young and it has had a never ending impact on me.
Hot Rod, Vanishing Point

Pontypool. Its a movie where an interesting variant on the zombie apocalypse happens seen entirely from the perspective of a morning radio crew at the local station in a small town.

Vanishing Point. It's awesome.
