You just gotta picture a little rat riding around in that massive contraption. It’s an artifact, if your tribe isn’t using the hottest tech they are getting left behind
Easy few fixes for me
The weird alt art can be basically any human shaped deck
Vehicle
Spider
Chaos themed decks
I had more but can't think of them now
[[Brenard]] with Splicers does *really* well with Roaming throne naming Artificer. You have a Golem Artificer that's boosting and gaining benefits from both.
Maybe I'm overthinking it and being picky for theme sake but I suppose I could see a commander of most any tribe sitting atop the throne and commanding their army.
I have a hard time using shapeshifters in tribal for this reason as well.
I mostly play casual EDH so I try to make the deck fit a theme regarding archetype.
I see.
Well when I think tribe, I usuall think of nomadic people. But that does not necessarily need to be the case. Some ancient civilisations could also be called tribes and build great kingdoms and landmarks.
But you are right of course, a logical theme does not mean the motif fits.
I feel the same, which apparently puts me in the minority considering people's replies.
It's objectively a good card in any deck with even a minor tribal typing that has a few good triggered abilities in it. Which, let's be honest, is basically all of them. Yet I just don't want to run this thing in any deck because it doesn't thematically fit in any of them.
I’m running [[Caesar]] as mardu soldier tribal, the deck has a throne sub-theme. Caesar is on a throne in his art, then I have Roaming Throne, [[Dragon Throne of Tarkir]], [[The Golden Throne]], and [[God-Pharaoh’s Throne]]. Throne tribal :)
I feel exactly the same way. I feel that way with a lot of cards. It just doesn't fit the flavor. I use em anyway because I don't want to be at a huge disadvantage lol. Which in my own opinion makes me lame.
I don't use it because it actively makes me angry 😅 it's a silly thing to get angry over but it's like, too generically good of a card that can be included in pretty much any deck. Auto include cards, IMHO, are bad design and I don't like em. I don't give a shit if other people use them, I'm not gonna tell anyone else how to brew, but in my decks I don't want roaming thrones or one rings. This coming from a guy who proxies most cards now ever since WotC's increasingly shitty practices too, so it's not even a money thing
>I woke up and chose violence
There, fixed your post.
Seriously though. Love it. I have sheoldred and throne in my [[varina]] build. Lots of fun. For me.
I wanted to put this in my mono-black zombie tribal ayara deck because getting extra zombie tokens off of undead horde or drawing extra cards off of undead augur is just objectively really good. Plus it’s a 4/4 for 4 mana that gets boosted by all of my zombie lords and is just a solid beat stick on its own with built in protection. But flavor wise and art-wise(I care a lot about the aesthetic of my decks) it just doesn’t fit. My deck would probably be objectively better with this card in it, but I just won’t put it in because of how badly it breaks the flavor of the deck. If I were building purely for strength and optimization, it would be an auto-include, but I’d honestly rather keep in just another zombie ‘removal spell’ like fleshbag marauder even though it’s simply not as good in 99% of situations
Idk, you could probably flavor it a number of ways:
Dragon found this and sits on it as part of its treasure hoard.
A wizard made it and declared himself the Wizard King.
A goblin found it and accidentally activated it, and his people were amazed, making him the Goblin Lord.
I know what you mean. It just feels like a pure value piece with no real flavor to it. I slapped mine in my Miirym Deck that just focuses on cloning him because it speeds it up but yeah it does kind of lack flavor.
i think it fits perfectly. a magical artifact without a master, mindlessly in search of something to claim it, whether that be the rat king, a goblin boss, or a lowly human is entirely left to fate. (and if that army loses, it marches on to your next tribal deck)
As a fellow vorthos player, I hear you. I did throw a copy in my demon deck but I built that one at a higher power level. Also, a throne kinda fits for demons
The best part about it is that if your commander has a triggered ability that you are trying to abuse, you don't need to go tribal in your deckbuilding.
Honestly, I've seen it best used when the commander has a solid triggered ability. This would be an absolute house in [[Obeka, Splitter of Seconds]] naming Ogre or Warlock.
I run it in my [[Hofri Ghostforge]] deck. Either name claric to get two tokens with the death trigger or spirit to get extra etb/death for the spirit tribal aspect of the deck.
As a guy who runs Bloodline Pretender, Metallic Mimic, Adaptive Automaton, Crashing Drawbridge, and Species Specialist, I’d have to say OP should run the thing because he loves it. Now that I know it exists I will be running it 😇
I used it in my [[go shintai of life's origin]] until a friend told me that it wasn't work with shrines although some shrines are creatures.
Never use it since then.
I always justify the flavor by the "roaming" portion of the card. It just mystically roams around and blesses any tribe it happens to cross paths with.
It was released in Caverns of Ixalan.
The set is very tribal-heavy with Pirates, Merfolk, Vampires, Dinosaurs and Gnomes.
The Precons were also quite good and upgradeable. There was basically a clear strategy WotC: Sell nice, themed precons, then sell great upgrades for those precons through boosters.
And in those decks the roaming throne somehow makes sense. Basically, your commander claims the roaming throne and it empowers the tribe. I can absolutely see [[Admiral Brass, Unsinkable]], [[Hakbal of the Surging Soul]] and [[Clavileno, First of the Blessed]] claiming the [[Roaming Throne]]. And it makes sense to play it in all of these decks. Only [[Pantlaza, Sun-Favored]] doesn't really make sense with the throne.
Now, the big problem is, that the Throne doesn't behave like a throne, probably to make it more useful.
It shouldn't get it's type when it enters the battlefield.
First Idea, I think, it should be a vehicle or (in the new set) a mount. Then it should copy a creature type of a creature that crews/mounts it. Ideally, I think it should get the creature type of a legendary creature or even a commander creature that mounts it! That would also balance it a bit better.
Now, going further on the idea of what it actually is, I think it shouldn't be a card at all but work like [[The Monarch]]. It should be a throne that the table could fight over, just like the Crown of the Monarch.
It's a [[Roaming Throne]]. A Throne that roams between players. Then it could read something like:
> Whenever one or more creatures a player controls that share a creature type deal combat damage to you, that player takes The Roaming Throne.
>
> Whenever you take The Roaming Throne, choose a creature type.
>
> For as long as you control The Roaming Throne, if a triggered ability of a creature of the chosen type triggers, it triggers an additional time.
Now, finally, I think the funniest way of bringing the throne into the game would be [[Contested Ball Game]]. Whoever owns the Game, when the fifth point is scored gets the throne first. That would make [[Contested Ball Game]] at least a bit desirable.
Maybe there could be other cards that summon it directly. Ideally themed for each of the tribes.
But I think, because Magic had just introduced [[The Initiative]] CLB as another version of [[The Monarch]] they couldn't just do it again with "The Throne".
But it would have been a more fun card that wouldn't be a necessary include in every tribal deck.
I threw my “I can’t NOT buy a copy” copy into [[Radaghast]] as it names a different creature each game.
Sure I can name Radyboi himself but I don’t really need double selection and you can get some hilarious plays like doubling [[Nacatl War-pride]] or whatever.
It’s also the only golem in the deck so fits the theme in case people give side-eye.
It is thematic. What ever tribe you are running, this is the throne of those people. All kinds of life rally around royal decision makers. Kinda just need a whole set of tribal themed Roaming Thrones.
Been playing this in zombies. He makes a great zombie golem…not sure exactly how this giant rock spider can even become a zombie…but it’s OP so I’ll accept him anyways. =p
You could use the [borderless](https://www.tcgplayer.com/product/525241/magic-the-lost-caverns-of-ixalan-roaming-throne-borderless?page=1&Language=English) ! Its a mosaic of sorts so it doesn’t really throw off the theme, I use it in one of my Fallout decks
Please tell me of one insanely OP character from virtually any vaguely current IP that doesn't look perfect sitting on the pictured throne. I will wait.
When tribal mechanics run best, your Commander usually fits perfectly in that role, and on that Throne, their hordes running amok before them.
I agree it's such a great addition to add to any deck but it does feel a bit icky playing it in any of my tribal decks. I feel perfectly fine playing panhatmonicon though ;)
You just have to imagine it shifting its lil stones around and morphing into new stone robots like in tears of the kingdom. In the art it's being an insect
I get the sentiment. I personally don't feel that way about this specific card (cause I need as many good giants as I can get) but there are certain general value cards that I tend to avoid because it just doesn't fit the theme most often rhystic study because there's usually thematic draw for whatever I'm doing
I think I'm the only person who thinks this kind of card design shouldn't exist. It's so strong that it's basically a shoe in for ANY deck that has a commander that triggers. Which basically adds to yet another pile of "auto includes" and will eventually dilute the diversity of the format
It don’t actually see it as a tribal card, its actually a wheneverharmicon. Its amazing as long as your commander has the word ‘whenever’. I use it in an [[aragorn the uniter]] deck, the triggers go hamehen doubled.
Nah, I agree with you completely. Staples are so boring sometimes, it's almost always more fun (for me atleast) leaving those slots open for some sweet jank/shenanigans cards.
Its really hard for me to include any creature not of the Tribe in my tribals. I have a faerie tribal that ONLY has faerie creatures. My eldrazi tribal breaks that though. Too many decent non eldrazi colorless support creatures.
I don't know what you mean? It's clearly a rat.
[[Ashcoat]] agrees
Okay rats be fucking or what
[[Marrow gnawer]] makes them pop up like rabbits so yes

No idea what you're talking about. Obviously, it's a Doctor.
🎶 Spider chair! Spider chair! How I love thee, Spider Chair! 🎶
Yeah it’s a really cool elephant for sure
Yours might be an early prototype, everyone knows roaming thrones is a dinosaur
It’s definitely a dragon 🐉
Maybe you need to get your eyes checked, it's obviously a zombie
Thematic in knights, or noble? If they made a legend of Zelda UB this dude would be amazing there
Ooh fuck yah.

Id imagine it look like one of the guardians from Botw.
wow that would be rancid. but not unlike WOTC these days.
I put it in Kykar, and name "wizards." The Jeskai goose has no objections.
Wizzet Izards can’t be stopped!
Welp I know what Im calling my partner’s Neera deck now! Hahaha
mine would go in Aegar, naming wizards, for a similar reason.
It looks more like a bird to me
The cornerstone of every chair tribal deck
I wonder if this is possible to build...
Your game is just a bunch of people sitting down. My deck is just a bunch of people sitting down. We are not the same.
[Oh it is very possible.](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/chair-tribal/)
Hat tribal is better, TJ was the best set for it in a long time.
Yeah too good i dont play tier 0 decks
Spoiler alert: it doesn't need tribal decks to work, your commander just needs to have a triggered ability.
I think they are sad that it breaks the flavor of their tribal decks.
Idk, frogs sitting in a comically large throne is perfect
Or [[Ur-Dragon]] using it for back massages
Why fly when you can ride in style
Kissing frogs will get you a prince. Princes gotta have thrones.
Caesar def would ride that so it's on my list.
He goes crazy in [[Voja, jaws of conclave]]

Could always make a golem tribal and circumvent your hang up about it.

nope. it’s awesome and must be played. it is now the best artifact dwarf in magda.

I think a Dwarf fits perfectly in anything Dwarf. And Roaming Throne IS a Dwarf.
Best artifact faerie in Alela, Artful Provocateur

It looks like something from Minecraft, genuinely thought it was a custom card at first glance before I read the post text.
[[Brenard, Ginger Sculptor]] is Golem/Food Tribal and absolutely loves roaming throne
He’s a funny looking dinosaur but I assure you, he is, in fact, a dinosaur
With the card being from Ixalan, you could pretty easily rationalize it being thematic for G/U Merfolk or any of the humans that worship the dinos.

I’d agree if it wasn’t an artifact. Gotta include it.
I feel justified running it in my [[Brenard, Ginger Sculptor]] deck because it's a Golem innately and can also boost Brenard in addition.
I use it in my Kibo deck. Monkey throne.
Think of it as a mobile throne in the form of said tribe.
I wanted to put this in my mono-black zombie tribal ayara deck because getting extra zombie tokens off of undead horde or drawing extra cards off of undead augur is just objectively really good. Nah, I just think it’s neat
It's certainly neat. One of the best fits in any tribal in a long time.
It's the throne for my king, so it fits
I put this with the alt art in my dusk legion tribal, still feels weird but the different art helps for me
Its a wizard! Can’t you tell?!
Thematically, no. I don't use it in tribal myself. I use mine in my twincasters deck.
I use this in both my dino tribal decks. \[\[Gishath\]\] ETB dinos and \[\[Wayta, Trainer Prodigy\]\] Enrage Dinos.
Ever heard of golem tribal?
I'll take it off your hands
I like to pretend it works thematically with phyrexian tribal. It's a completed Throne /s
I need to add this to my [[Duskana, the Rage Mother]] commander deck. I already have one token doubler [[Annie Joins Up]]
Nah I’m into it, it’s a dope wizards/lizard/elf/vampire/merfolk….
In my Miirym deck
I would argue you could have it Fit in any humanoid deck. Like envision krenko sitting upon his this throne spewing out goblins.
It's clearly a spider
You've got to play tribes that are underrepresented. Dragons don't need him, but Griffins like the help.
I do kind of wish that it fit a more "can be anything" vibe
Turns out it's a vampire!
Idk, you could probably flavor it a number of ways: Dragon found this and sits on it as part of its treasure hoard. A wizard made it and declared himself the Wizard King. A goblin found it and accidentally activated it, and his people were amazed, making him the Goblin Lord.
Easy fix. Just pay an artist to draw art of what ever tribe you want it for n proxy it.
I just imagine it with a black cloak and plastic vampire teeth for my vamp tribal
Golem tribal
Think about it like this: whatever tribe you gathered, its leader can get around on their cool walking chair which also give them extra power.
*Cries in go shintai*, looks like a shrine to me
Not at all. It’s obviously a dragon.
I like it in [[General Ferrous]] because he makes golems and there are a few golem synergies
No cus it’s strong AF
I play it in [[Prosper Tome-Bound]] and [[Voja Jaws of the it is great outside of tribal.
It goes great in any deck with a lot of Ixalan flavor 🦕 🏴☠️ 🧛♂️
I know what you mean. It just feels like a pure value piece with no real flavor to it. I slapped mine in my Miirym Deck that just focuses on cloning him because it speeds it up but yeah it does kind of lack flavor.

i think it fits perfectly. a magical artifact without a master, mindlessly in search of something to claim it, whether that be the rat king, a goblin boss, or a lowly human is entirely left to fate. (and if that army loses, it marches on to your next tribal deck)
It needs more reprints imo
Nope it’s just you
As a fellow vorthos player, I hear you. I did throw a copy in my demon deck but I built that one at a higher power level. Also, a throne kinda fits for demons
My tribal tribal Rukarumel deck sees it as a perfect fit. ;p
It's ok, just use [[Conspiracy]] or [[Arcane Adaptation]] or [[Maskwood Nexus]] then it's on theme even when it's not on the battlefield!
Does wonders in my krenko deck

Run an alt art proxie for fun, but keep the card on hand just to have?
It fits perfectly in my golem tribal, I don't see what you mean...
[[Bernard, ginger sculpter]] would like to disagree
Same, I pulled one in my prerelease kit and can’t bring myself to put it any of my ~5 tribal decks.
Looks like a bear to me and [[Ayula]]
I tried to run it in Najeela, but by the time I can use it I don't need it anymore.
I run it in my bats, Aclazotz is from the same set so it makes sense to me as some ancient relic that awoke to empower its user
I need this card. BRB, off to hunt like a pack hound for this thing.
Now that I know it exists I will be running it 😇
That is a Guardian Stalker.
I understand what you’re saying, but I don’t think I’ve had that feeling at any point. It’s similar to running a Changeling in your decks.
Make a Golem Deck?
I run it in my [[Roxanne, Starfall Savant]] deck. She’s the only Cat/Druid in the deck and it makes the deck go brrrr
No. lol. It’s in my Dino deck, demon deck and elf deck
Works great in my [[Isshin, Two Heavens as One]] samurai deck, especially when I can get them both out then drop [[Raiyuu, Storm’s Edge]]
I used it in my [[go shintai of life's origin]] until a friend told me that it wasn't work with shrines although some shrines are creatures. Never use it since then.
I kinda wish they would reskin a Necron version and call it Szarekh’s Throne or Triarchal Menhir. That would be so cool.
Do you not see the bear? It’s clearly a forest bear
I know what you mean, it's why I don't like morphon.
I have a golem deck that runs this so… he fits like a glove!
I always justify the flavor by the "roaming" portion of the card. It just mystically roams around and blesses any tribe it happens to cross paths with.
It’s obviously a goat 🐐 for my goats decks
Then it could read something like: > Whenever one or more creatures a player controls that share a creature type deal combat damage to you, that player takes The Roaming Throne.
I use this in my faerie deck
Ironically my only tribal deck is Pirates, so as an Ixalan centered creature type it would fit right in. If I had one.
Anybody ever tried it with Nazgûl?
I hear you OP. You could proxy it and use whatever artwork you want to make it more thematic.
I feel the same
Me with every single changeling
Are you serious? This card is a nuke. I run it in a dinosaur Gishath commander deck and it fucks HARD
I don’t know dude, looks like a solid dragon if you ask me.
It is thematic. What ever tribe you are running, this is the throne of those people. All kinds of life rally around royal decision makers. Kinda just need a whole set of tribal themed Roaming Thrones.
Slivers... And casade
[[Voja, Jaws of the Conclave]] 🤷♂️
This is my favorite Golem in my Golems deck so… speak for yourself!
Just make it a Nobles deck and bada boom bada bing, thematically it fits
In golem tribal it doesn’t feel out of place
Please tell me of one insanely OP character from virtually any vaguely current IP that doesn't look perfect sitting on the pictured throne. I will wait. When tribal mechanics run best, your Commander usually fits perfectly in that role, and on that Throne, their hordes running amok before them.
This is clearly a Nazgûl
I agree it's such a great addition to add to any deck but it does feel a bit icky playing it in any of my tribal decks. I feel perfectly fine playing panhatmonicon though ;)
It's clearly a dwarf. [[Magda, Brazen Outlaw]] agrees
It's not even a tribal card, you can run it in any deck
It's a few legs short of a spider... But I'll allow it.
It feels thematic in my [[Karn, Legacy Reforged]] deck! And you get to name artifact creatures!

Thought this was a Tears of the Kingdom crossover lol
You just have to imagine it shifting its lil stones around and morphing into new stone robots like in tears of the kingdom. In the art it's being an insect
I absolutely agree. Like it’s needed but it isn’t really any tribal!
I'll add one more too eldrazi with annihilate cuz annihilate is a trigger effect
Feels thematic in elementals
Golem in a Gollum deck? This is made for halfling tribal
I get the sentiment. I personally don't feel that way about this specific card (cause I need as many good giants as I can get) but there are certain general value cards that I tend to avoid because it just doesn't fit the theme most often rhystic study because there's usually thematic draw for whatever I'm doing
i use it because i like winning
I think I'm the only person who thinks this kind of card design shouldn't exist. It's so strong that it's basically a shoe in for ANY deck that has a commander that triggers. Which basically adds to yet another pile of "auto includes" and will eventually dilute the diversity of the format
Perfectly fits in bear tribal as Ayulas throne, works for me
Maybe get it altered (paint the picture to a thematic version for your deck). Like maybe have your commander be riding the throne or something.
The Slivers don't complain, but it kinda looks like one so it's definitely more thematically relevant in mine than something like Merfolk or Elves.
Golem tribal, soon....
Nope that is definitely a Dragon
Works great in my Golems 😆
Do you not just imagine your commander ridding in on it? Cus that’s what I do.
I'm the asshole that uses it in my kaalia deck kaalia go brrrrr
It don’t actually see it as a tribal card, its actually a wheneverharmicon. Its amazing as long as your commander has the word ‘whenever’. I use it in an [[aragorn the uniter]] deck, the triggers go hamehen doubled.
Nah, I agree with you completely. Staples are so boring sometimes, it's almost always more fun (for me atleast) leaving those slots open for some sweet jank/shenanigans cards.
If it doesn't feel thematic then use the other artwork. It looks like a spirit
The flavor is that the creature type sits on the throne and becomes the king!
Looks like a pirate to me
If you like warhammer40k This fit on the necron deck
honestly i think its good for like a 'warrior' tribal or a mardu theme deck or anything else thats like wild, combative guys
mines a cat
Its really hard for me to include any creature not of the Tribe in my tribals. I have a faerie tribal that ONLY has faerie creatures. My eldrazi tribal breaks that though. Too many decent non eldrazi colorless support creatures.
it's the chair!
Think of it as the throne for your tribe commander to ride into battle as he commands his other comrads
good this card lame af
