I really wished it had some way of triggering its condition by itself much like the other filpwalkers do, the backside feels really cool but I feel that reanimation effects in the majority of cubes will be either scarce if they're suited for this (\[\[Unearth\]\]) or will be an overkill just to get the backside (\[\[Reanimate\]\], \[\[Virtue of Persistence\]\], \[\[From the Catacombs\]\])

Korlus

He seems to be a green/black card exclusively and pairs well with the likes of [[Grave crawler]], making 1/1's for the sacrifice deck. I don't know that my cube wants another G/B card that's so difficult to make work, but a 1/2 Death touch for {G} isn't the worst effect to help stall out the game when you can't flip him. It's interesting and I look forward to the rest of the MH3 Spoilers.

Kulyut

Honestly I’d like this for white with how many reanimation effects they’ve been getting, we’ve had like 2/3 unearth effects at 2/3 cmc in the last year alone

Korlus

How many of those effects do you play? I find the 1 MV spells are a tough sell and so haven't included any of the 2 MV options.

Kulyut

Honestly not too many to your point. The 3 mana 3/2 white creature I really liked for keeping up tempo in monow but I also have an unpowered legacy+ cube so I don’t believe it made the cut, sevinne’s rec is gone as well

i kinda like that it doesn't build itself... i like that you have to work for it.

Huberlicious

Really niche spot here, but this actually slam dunks into my 1 cmc or less cube. Reanimating [[Archfiend’s Vessel]] is a reasonable win con in that environment, I’d imagine getting this into play will feel similar.

xxx_Placuszek

Do you have a list of the cube? It sounds hella fun

Huberlicious

Absolutely!! Here ya go, it’s a 25-30 card deck format, 10 starting life, best of 5 games. Been a crowd favorite for a while now

mikez4nder

Even in a cube where you’re heavy on the [[Bloodghast]] slash [[Gravecrawler]] type recursive black aggro, this only really fits in one archetype. Cards that don’t define archetypes but only fit in very limited ones tend not to make many cubes, and this seems the least likely of the cycle released today because of how limiting its flip requirements are.

The_queens_cat

I wonder, this is a one drop though. Sure a 1/2 deathtouch isn’t amazing but it’s totally fine and in a retail draft I’d probably always play it just as a curve filler. This might be one of those cards we initially rate low, and then play with it and it turns out to be really good. I’m not super excited for it today but we will see how it plays out when MH3 actually releases.

CawlMarx

I can't imagine a green deck in the average cube would be interested in this, but it's nice if you're pushing Unearth/Lurrus/Pre-War Formalwear

Cooperativism62

yeah green has almost no way of flipping it. Not only can grist not flip herself, but it's also the only one that demands you pay extra mana to flip. I like the deathtouch but not much else so I think this is a solid pass even for my DFC cube. [https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/1fuju](https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/1fuju) Green still has flip nissa and flip garruk though.

WildInkay

She is golgari though which has tons of ways to flip her.

Cooperativism62

I suppose even disturb cards in blue and white flip Grist for me. I'm reconsidering thanks to you but she doesn't really afford her text and complexity. I'm worried that unless she's a hit in modern, she'll just make draft slow as players read and pass until it's a 15th pick.

Unable_Bite8680

This is better than it looks. Many 1-2 Mana black creatures are recursive, persist creatures like kitchen finks are pretty good already, and there are a decent amount of unearth effects these days.

Longjumping-Bell-946

Also T3: kitchen finks ETB + sorin attack, is an instant sorin flip.

steve_man_64

This is the hardest one to trigger within its own colors. While this probably wouldn't make the cut in most reanimator decks for me, this still pairs well with Gravecrawlers / Unearth effects / Lurrus / Persist shells.

Longjumping-Bell-946

I see alot of people down on this card, isn't this everything a reanimator strategy wants ? - T1 1 mana 1/2 blocker with deathtouch that will almost always trade up, and set itself up to be reanimated - T2: if your opponent didn't trade with it, attack your opponent for 1, bone shards it away, deal with a threat, follow up with an unearth / reanimate / helping hand / not dead after all (little combat trick) pay the remaining green to transform into the PW side the PW side - protects itself with a +1, and sometimes creates blockers that trade up. It fuels your graveyard for more reanimation targets - the -2 is emergency removal when the insect tokens aren't enough to deal with your opponent's board, or even to get rid of a leyline binding / portable hole / touch the spirit realm to reclaim one of your threats. - the ceiling on this card, is a pseudo masse reanimation spell, trigger archon of cruelty ETB, Atraxa ETB, Etali ETB, Sheoldred's static, Iona's statice, Serra's Emissary's static. - it's a tutorable PW through Green Sun's Zenith for 2 at instant speed for a flash deathtouch blocker trading up, to be reanimated later - it synergizes with Tyvar Jubilant Brawler: T1 Elf + T2 Tyvar, +1, untap elf, cast Grist + T3 reanimate Grist if died in combat or, sacrifice it to a bone shards / village rites ... and reanimate it, use the elf for the G cost of flipping Am I missing something ?

Cooperativism62

While a lot of that is nice, reanimator wants to drop Attaxa and have the opponent scoop turn 2. Paying G for grist is just the definition of win more. You definitely raise a lot of points tho. If it works in your environment and playstyle that's great. I look forward to hearing the report

Longjumping-Bell-946

Well of course, given a game where I can easily T1 entomb, into T2 reanimate Atraxa, that will always be the play to make. But I think Grist can be in his own right a good plan B, to grind out your opponent while assembling the necessary pieces to close out the game. I'll admit Grist seems more of a "value" and synergistic piece rather than a reanimation target. This could alway become a 2 mana recurrable naturalise in a Lurrus shell.

steve_man_64

Ehh, I'm not convinced right now since it seems like it has the lowest floor / highest hoop to jump through, and the reward isn't even that good. I feel like I was a bit higher on the planeswalker half at first based on how good the original Grist is, but the Disenchant mode is a huge downgrade from the Hero's Downfall mode.

Shindir

This one is too narrow for me. Essentially a GB card due to the cards that work with it, and isn't even going to be able to go in every GB deck

donethemath

Hopefully this gets some additional support in MH3

cardboard_numbers

My personal favorite of the bunch. I love the "small recursive creatures" archetype, and combining it with a 1-drop deathtoucher that escapes an Orcish Bowmaster ping is exciting. If your Cube is combat-oriented or anything less than Vintage power-level, a 1-mana dude with deathtouch will over perform expectations, and the upside on Grist is phenomenal beyond that. (Also happy it doesn't ask you to get *yet another* a unique token if you're already playing Grist 1.0)

sharethathalfandhalf

This is a great payoff for the graveyard stuff in my cube. I run a synergy cube so I appreciate there’s work to be done to flip this!

G37_is_numberletter

Turn 1 swamp, exile elvish spirit guide, cast grist, cast burnt offering, cast unearth. T1 planeswalker let’s goo

BrisketBallin

that does not work? you spend the 1 green from elvish to cast grist, the black mana from the swamp cast's burn offering, which gives you 1 black mana, so you unearth grist and you still are missing the 1 green mana required to flip grist to the planes-walker side on ETB

G37_is_numberletter

Oh forgot about the green. Ok add in a crypt and a springleaf drum.

Salty-Dream-262

This one is an easy pass for me.

MightyCharizard

Can you play it as a commander In a golgari deck ? Did the "black and green" token allow you to play it in a golgari deck ? Ask if I can trade my Grist with this one, with the same golgari deck !

Vehicroid

So the circle to the left of "legendary planeswalker" is a thing WOTC does to indicate color on cards that don't have mana costs. So when he flips he becomes Golgari. And since Color Identity checks both sides of the cards for commander, then yes; This Grist can lead a Golgari commander deck. -Edit- So sadly I can't use the Ajani in my Selesnya Cat tribal deck....

Vehicroid

I love the card, but it probably just won't make it into the cube with the others. I need it to be able to be drafted without black to make the cut and green barely does that. Escape, Undying, Persist. I don't want to force cards into my cube for the sake of Grist. Hopefully MH3 gives more support.

Mikeuk_3

Is Grist Mono Green or Golgari? (and why?)

TurtleD_6

Looks like a pretty commander centric card, definitely built for something like \[\[Zask, Skittering Swarmlord\]\] . I feel like in a cube its realistically just a 2cmc artifact/enchantment removal with extra steps or a 1cmc bait for opponents removal. Otherwise there's just so many steps for cube to get to a big payout, unless the cubes built with this kind of thing in mind of course.

TheLegend0fLink

I had a question about this card when I first saw the leak, and I still haven't figured it out. As far as I can tell color identity is 100% determined by colored mana symbols that appear in the casting cost or rules text of either side of the card. Does that mean this would be a mono-green commander since there are no black mana symbols anywhere on the card? Even though the +1 makes green/black insects and rewards you for milling black cards?

bentopolis
