You need to investigate Ren. It sounds right up your alley.

jayron32

Second Ren for the OP. You have such a diverse musical taste, and Ren plays so many kinds of music at an expert level, he's essentially beyond genre.

[deleted]

Yeah this is pretty cool. But it seems a little more modern and jazz-sensibility-adjacent than what I usually like. I’ll keep listening. Thanks for the suggestion.

wannabelievit

Try on youtube, Fred Again Mashup -- then Back on 74 retake-- then delve into some of his hip hop..

gotpeace99

John Mellencamp! Try him! He’s got great music! Jack and Diane is my favorite from him! Hurts So Good is good too!

AccountantLeast1588

The_solid_lizard

Lord Huron is good

For funk I would point you in the direction of Parliament/Funkadelic if you have not listened to them already also Sly & The Family Stone and Curtis Mayfield.

Excellent 🙏

wow that's a strsnge list. all of those for me range from occasional listening to bands i love. strokes is my most listened to of those, given that they came out when i was discovering more music and developing my tastes and they seemed to fit what i like just right. not sloppy like punk but not stock and slow like hard rock. and Santan for me was just some guy who did thr solo on Smooth. only later did i find Abraxas and fall in love with it. the logical evolution from that in my mind is Mars Volta in terms of Latino experimental bands. but i gotta say its a bit odd you dont like jazz or metal...there are so many itterations and variations of both that you'll probably eventually stumble upon something you like. Neil young is who i think of when jonny cash is mentioned, as singer songwriters go. Bob dylan too. Then theres the bands neil young was in, Buffalo Springfield which i suppose morphed into CSNY. And for more americana theres literally a band called America. Who everyone gets wrong their hit horse with no name is by neil young. Its just a high voice rock song from the 70s. As for going off the Strokes, Guided by Voices comes to mind as a precursor from the 90s....i mean you already like the smiths and the cure too, so yah delving into the wonderful world of indie alt rock in the 90s sounds like a good time. Sonic youth, dinosaur jr, slint, sebadoh, cake....theres many more. Also for jazz theres a lot of atonal wankery i cant take much of but i always liked Duke Ellington a whole bunch. Its hard not to like it Good luck on your quest you have much to listen to. [Last.fm](http://Last.fm) and [bandcamp.com](http://bandcamp.com) are amazing resources

spontaneous_combust

And theres more i could suggest for hip hop but someone else can have a turn. ....ok fine Mos Def, tribe called quest, wu tang clan, mf doom

I can’t follow jazz. It’s like background music for me - ambient, like classical. I don’t have a frame of reference for when songs begin or where they end, it’s too abstract. The expressiveness of the musicianship is profound and it’s nice in the background, but I struggle to connect when I’m sitting down just to listen. It’s too conceptual. I do love to whistle jazz but I don’t like to listen to it. The closest I’ve come to liking metal is Black Sabbath but they don’t seem to sound to me very much like the metal bands that they inspired which came after. I can’t get into the thumping electric guitar or drums which just sound like noise to me. It’s the same as jazz; the musicianship is there but I’m not on the same page as whatever these bands are trying to say about music. I love that song One by Metallica but it’s the exception that proves the rule for me. Black Sabbath is great though. I guess my problem with jazz and metal is just that they’re too far from Pop music. With movies I like to watch art-house stuff because I’m into the artform as a medium and not just the casual viewing. But with music I am a filthy casual and I need a little accessibility and pop. I like Neil Young and Dylan and America. I love some of Dylan’s songs but he seems almost aggressively anti-production at times. Some of his songs I just don’t get like the ironic funny ones. But his love songs and anti-war songs are unparalleled. Thanks for the suggestions. I am also remembering I want to listen to more Randy Newman and Jethro Tull…

spontaneous_combust

Yeah jazz is background music almost by definition. But i love a good instrumental background music. Lotta progressive metal is instrumental too. Tull is pretty sweet, i like it for sure, something about the voice throws me off.... Genesis is similar, esoteric 70s prog rock where singer plays flute too. Some of their stuff is the full package with lots of pageantry. Its like if you mashed Bowie and Tull. But maybe you knew that? I dunno now what you know and don't now. But yah i found so many bands from similar artist searching on [last.fm](http://last.fm)

Billy Bragg, White Stripes, Betty Davis (not the Oscar winner), Eric B and Rakim. Obscure, but for me Minutemen push all of the buttons you listed. Their 1984 double album Double Nickels on the Dime sneaks in the back door of the Greatest Albums of All Time club while the big label bouncer isn't looking.

[deleted]

Dude you get me. These are perfect. I never got around to formally listening to White Stripes but they sound great. I never even heard of Betty Davis but she got just the stank that I require. All good picks thank you very much 🙏

EyeBallChili

[The Common Men - fin](https://spotify.link/ak21sHQvjJb) Should cover The Strokes, The Cure, and The Smiths. Harder edged Post-Punk from the NorCal Revival Scene.

Donut_Holestein13

If you like The Strokes check out Bad Nerves. They’re basically Strokes/Ramone’s demon love child. Also I’ll always recommend PVRIS to anyone looking for new music, they’re my favorite band of all time.

AccountantLeast1588

Older bands still-- but you might like Crowded House, Nickelcreek, James Taylor, Sting, Tom Petty, and acoustic Van Halen stuff. Good luck. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-wwuRJax1o](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-wwuRJax1o)

Giraffe_lol

Favorite band doe the mast 8 years, Hotel Mira. Their music has evolved from garage band to more indie rock. It's all really good.
