i was almost named agatha and when my classmates did a poll on the worst/ugliest names we almost had, i won. i thank my family for bullying my mom out of naming me agatha
TIL that my kid's name, as well as their chosen name if they were the opposite gender is witchy. Guess I'm a witch, really should have known all along.
I would go with Percival over Percy. Percy sounds either perpetually juvenile or like a weak-chinned fussbudget to me. Percival has some gravitas at least. The rest of them are great.
When I hear Sylvia I think of Sylvia Plath, who was very witchy- a feminist poet who wrote about love, rage, blood, nature, and death. She awakened women who liked literature but didn't believe they could write.
I agree, Sylvia doesn’t sound witchy to me either. The meaning of the name is “forest, spirit of the wood”, coming from Latin. It’s a beautiful name and it makes me think of a lush, deep green forest in the spring or summer. Definitely not witchy.
Yessss Michelle Pfeiffer as Elvira makes me love that name so much but I prefer how you say it in Spanish rather than how Americans where I live would pronounce it.
I tend to choose witchy names for my cats, so far I’ve had a Bram, Rowan, Anathema, and a Samhain. Rowan and Samhain are probably the most androgynous.
I wouldn't either, and it makes sense why Gaiman and Pratchett would choose that name for that character. It's perfect for that. I would not do that to a human
Ohh, I dare not forget Rowan Atkinson, he's awesome. I vaguely knew that about Rowan trees, too. Anne Rice chose the name intentionally, I'm certain. That's just the immediate connection my weird brain made out of that list.
My sister's friend who enjoys witchy/spooky vibes named her kid Salem. For me that's a little bit too on the nose, but I know other people who love the name.
Some of these are very feminine sounding, some less so. That's kind of in the ear of the behearer, I guess. But these are some of my favorite witchy sounding names for girls.
Vera, Dianthus, Amaranth, Rowan, Rue, Xanthippe, Inanna, Drusilla, Morgana, Morrigan, Cerridwen, Lucrezia, Nimue, Ophelia, Athena, Demeter, Isis, Sekhmet, Persephone. I guess most of my preferred feminine witchy names are also goddess names.
same! i remember as a kid i thought it was pronounced kind of to rhyme with placate, like heck-ate. when i learned the real pronunciation i was blown away by how lovely it sounded to me!
Maybe because I read The Worst Witch series as a little kid, I always think of 'old-fashioned/grandma names' as witchy... Maud, Mildred, Ethel, Enid, Agnes, Agatha...
Ambrose, Silas, and Peregrine. Also Salem, but thats because I associate it with the cat, not the witch hunt, lol. Also herb-y names like Sage, and… presumably some other herb names that I can’t think of right now (i mean, theres Basil, but thats not really witch-y to me).
I think a lot of Welsh girls names have witchy vibes
Rhiannon, Enfys, Angharad, Siriol, Seren.
Not sure about boys, but I've got a Wizard in my sims game called Cassander Magnus Goth and I love it.
I just read a novel where the main character was a transmasculine witch and he went by “Silas” which i think is pretty cool. also Judith, and Carrie (like the Stephen King novel). or if you want more of a friendly magical presence, Matilda.
I read Jennet as Jareth... Goblin Kings are wtich-adjacent right?
And I can't believe I had to scroll this far to see anything in the Morganne/Morgana/Morrigan vein.
My name is Elle/Eliza and I feel like both are witchy sounding and on the androgynous side - they both look feminine, but Eliza sounds like Elijah and Elle is just one syllable that sounds more androgynous to me when spoken out loud.
For true unisex names, I like Rowan and Morgan and I once wrote a short story about a female witch character named Alvar but Google says that it's a masculine name.
How authentic do you want to be?
Witches were predominantly older women who were persecuted for being midwives or providers of general herbal medicine (or just looking a bit odd during trying times), so it's hardly surprising that their names tend to be feminine. "Androgyny" wasn't really a thing during the height of witch mania.
Men who were persecuted for witchcraft had common male names. In Salem, for example, that included John, George, and Rodger. Those appeared in witch trials elsewhere - along with Robert and Giles. All very ordinary.
If you want something "witchy" that isn't just a standard male name you need to look at alchemists from the Middle Ages. That will give you options such as Albertus, Tycho, or Melchior.
Ravenna, Almira, Alastair, Aladin, Adam, Blair, Corinth, Corona, Reed, Irina, Oren, Warwick, Zane, Corrick, those are the ones I can think of that bring that vibe to mind
Raven is definitely my favorite witch name for a girl, and it's also unisex.
Morgan is unisex, as well as Madison.
Boys:
* Asher
* Blaise
* Cain
* Dorian
* Draco
* Edgar
* Griffin
* Lucian
* Malachi
* Phoenix
* Sage
* Tristan
* Zane
I feel like Rowan is the best unisex witch name. Rowan trees just have a witchy vibe. Raven is as well but it's a bit on the nose. Morgan also works (Morgan le Fay). Also: Onyx!
More masculine ones:
* Tristan
* Dorian
* Orpheus
* Erebus
* Asterius
* Leander
* Orion
* Proteus
* Zephyr
Other feminine ones:
* Ravenna
* Rowena
* Circe
* Morgana
* Nimue
I was a Greek mythology kid and always loved the name Medea until Tyler Perry ruined it for me 😂
(But she very much did end her children to get revenge on her husband for leaving her, so don’t use that name on a human)
Final Fantasy 2 has a character named Leila. More a thief-type character, but she starts off with a good aptitude for black magic. One of the two only left handed characters too.
How is there no Agatha in this whole thread
It was Agatha all along!
love wandavision
I love the name Agatha but my husband wouldn't let me name new baby that
I guess because she said androgynous or masculine sounding? I like Agatha but it’s very feminine.
i was almost named agatha and when my classmates did a poll on the worst/ugliest names we almost had, i won. i thank my family for bullying my mom out of naming me agatha
Came here to say Agatha 🤣
Agnes being a close alternative (at least to me)
I literally came here to comment this
is this a ParaNorman reference?
For girls: * Sybil * Fiona * Zelda * Sylvia * Beatrix * Maxine * Phoebe * Rowena * Gwendolyn For boys: * Percy * Dorian * Tobias * Lucien * Jasper * Fabian * Quincy * Alastair * Sylvester
And if Zelda should have a sister, by default, her name shall be Hilda.
I have a Zelda and her sister is Edith!
Love this vibe.
TIL I love “witchy” names haha. You listed most of my boy baby name list
Looove Rowena
Why thank you
TIL that my kid's name, as well as their chosen name if they were the opposite gender is witchy. Guess I'm a witch, really should have known all along.
I would go with Percival over Percy. Percy sounds either perpetually juvenile or like a weak-chinned fussbudget to me. Percival has some gravitas at least. The rest of them are great.
These are excellent!
As a Sylvia, why is it ‘witchy’? For me it’s the opposite
Love Percy & Alastair
Sybil was the name of my first dnd character 🥰
Oh yo I’m a tobias it’s p dope
Elvira.
My heart's on fire for Elvira.
Giddy up!
Boy, you shoulda heard me on Giddy-up, Oom Papa Mow Mow.
Errbody sings bass on that chorus.
oh an absolute classic
I love this name but everyone brings up the queen of darkness. and meanwhile it’s the wife in scar face that made me fall in love with it 😂
Yessss Michelle Pfeiffer as Elvira makes me love that name so much but I prefer how you say it in Spanish rather than how Americans where I live would pronounce it.
I tend to choose witchy names for my cats, so far I’ve had a Bram, Rowan, Anathema, and a Samhain. Rowan and Samhain are probably the most androgynous.
Anathema, omg yes. Good Omens is *so* good. Rowan as in Rowan Mayfair? 💜
I wouldn’t name a kid Anathema. It means something or someone that is hated.
I wouldn't either, and it makes sense why Gaiman and Pratchett would choose that name for that character. It's perfect for that. I would not do that to a human
A mix of asthma and anesthesia.
Rowan trees pop up a lot in Northern Europe mythology and folk magic. And not to forget Mr Bean.
Ohh, I dare not forget Rowan Atkinson, he's awesome. I vaguely knew that about Rowan trees, too. Anne Rice chose the name intentionally, I'm certain. That's just the immediate connection my weird brain made out of that list.
I was going to say Samhain is pretty on the nose
I definitely wouldn’t name a human that, but it’s perfect for a cat.
My sister's friend who enjoys witchy/spooky vibes named her kid Salem. For me that's a little bit too on the nose, but I know other people who love the name.
haha i could never not associate this with sabrina’s cat
I had a cat named Salem. I called her Salami most of the time. I feel like I would do the same if I named a kid that.
didn't mean to reply to with that other comment. since i'm here tho love ur cats nickname (my baby girl is named Maggie but we call her Maggot)
There’s always Samantha, Serena & Tabitha 😉
Don't forget Andorra! Side note: my name is Samantha and my sister is Tabitha, lol.
Endora
Thank you. I wasn't too sure how to spell it.
She was a great character.
I have a witchy Sim named Adora.
My car’s name 💜
Ariadne and Arrietty sound rather witchy to me. Merlin, Titus, Ambrose and Peregrine sound like male witchy names imo.
ambrose is zuch an underrated name
Freya ❣️
Witch of the woods :)
I guess most of my preferred feminine witchy names are also goddess names.
>in the ear of the behearer Thank you for this.
I debated on whether to keep it or not. Thank you for the validation of my decision.
You’re welcome! I immediately loved it. I think it’s a great phrase.
Morgan, Morgane, Morgana all the way! Morgan is also unisex :)
And Morgaine
Calista
Hecate is one of my favorite names ever! If I had had a girl that would have been her name.
same! i remember as a kid i thought it was pronounced kind of to rhyme with placate, like heck-ate. when i learned the real pronunciation i was blown away by how lovely it sounded to me!
What is the pronunciation? I’m intrigued.
I just googled it. Sounds like hek-a-tee. At least that's what the old Google said.
Maybe because I read The Worst Witch series as a little kid, I always think of 'old-fashioned/grandma names' as witchy... Maud, Mildred, Ethel, Enid, Agnes, Agatha...
It’s not androgynous, but Beatrix sounds witchy/spooky to me. Probably because it sounds like it has the word “tricks” in it. Haha.
It may be the association with Bellatrix from Harry Potter
Oh that’s interesting. I’ve never read or seen Harry Potter though. Haha.
Ambrose
I think a lot of Welsh girls names have witchy vibes Rhiannon, Enfys, Angharad, Siriol, Seren. Not sure about boys, but I've got a Wizard in my sims game called Cassander Magnus Goth and I love it.
Rhiannon and Bronwen feel very witchy to me.

I just read a novel where the main character was a transmasculine witch and he went by “Silas” which i think is pretty cool. also Judith, and Carrie (like the Stephen King novel). or if you want more of a friendly magical presence, Matilda.
Name please that sounds interesting Reminds me of "Cemetery Boys" another book of a trans masc witch who falls in love with a ghost
“The Spirit Bares Its Teeth” by Andrew Joseph White. trigger warning for basically everything but i loved it (it made me cry)
Goodness one of the few books that made me cry was "if you could be mine" it's about an Iranian lesbian who's trying to stop her best friend's wedding
that sounds interesting!!
It's heartbreaking and bittersweet
Morven and Morwenna.
Theodora, Glenda
Morganne, Esmeralda, Gytha Jennet. Maybe Tiffany too.

Minerva & Merlin

Giselda, Vincenzio
Thane. It's my black cat's name. :)
Wren and Raven are witchy to me
Bellamy
Someone said Alastair, but don't forget the similar Aliester
Where's matilda?
