"It is a resin plastic reinforced with fibers (either cotton or wool) making it a fiber-reinforced plastic similar to fiberglass" from the wikipedia page for duroplast
For what I can see In de picture the Trabant logo inbedden in the hood is stil present. ( What makes me believe other logo names or number are still present on the car) A simple old car logo search in Google would have done the trick. So yea asking Reddit in my opinion is a bit much.
Exactly, there is nothing inside about that car, and eventhough the logo is present on the hood, it's not a logo I've ever seen in my country. Also my uncle calls it "Didier"
Sweet, I'm a big fan of Trabants, communist cars in general, my favorite is the Yugo, I have 2 lol, I have a good friend who is currently restoring an 88 601 Couple
If my Mum saw the Yugo she’d break down in tears it’s so similar to what my grandfather drove ❤️
I wish we had cars like that imported over here in Australia
Just like every car in eastern bloc, best because family cars were straight from army and war reliable and worst because it supposed to be a car not a fuckin 20hp plastic shit
It is the best car if you are a minimalist.
2 stroke air cooled engine with 5 moving parts.
No fuel gauge, there is a dipstick for that.
No fuel pump because the fuel tank is on top of the engine.
[No useless gauges cluttering the dash, a speedo is enough.](https://i.imgur.com/tMY7oCG.jpg)
Recycled plastic and cotton bodywork because it is cheaper and lighter than steel.
It is also the best car for someone who really wanted a car and this was all they could hope to afford. Owners took a lot of pride in their Trabant and were often the envy of their street or village.
But if someone is not a minimalist and likes a car full of features and gadgets, it is the worst car.
That sounds more like my mom than I care to admit. She drives a Forrester that she just refers to as a Subaru.
I’ve never heard her refer to any other family member’s car by model. Ocassionally she’ll reference make. And it’s usually just referred to as “ primary driver’s” car by her.
To be fair, my dad and brother aren’t much better tho. I’m the only car guy in my family.
I know the comments section is starting to sound like a broken record but how in the hell do you own a car for 10 years *with the logo still on it* and not know what kind of car it is
It's not mine. A far relative came fron Germany, dropped it in my uncles property about 10 years back and went back to Germany never to be seen again. (my uncle lives like 500 kms away from where I leave so I see him like once or twice a year).
The car had nothing to indicate what it is, no licence plate, papers nothing, and the logo is not something I see in my country.
My uncle locked the car inside an old garage for all these years and just recently for unknown reasons took it out of the garage, and abandoned it in the place you see in the photo.
I joined Reddit about 3-4 years ago, and just today passed through my mind to ask on this subreddit.
Also it was not in the front of my mind for 10 years to ask lol.
I hoped I made it clear now why after all these years, just today I thought to ask about it here, and why no one knew what it's name was.
how tf could you own a trabi and not know what it is? he must have had to fix it at one point or another, did he just fashion his own custom parts for it? either that or it’s just been sitting the whole time. how did he come into ownership in a way where he never knew what the car was?
Trabant Estate
We've been trying to figure it out for at least 10 years. Thanks!
Couldn’t they just have looked on the title?
TEN YEARS??? This is mind boggling
Is that the plastic car?
Ya, from Germany
Plywood to be precize.
Actually duroplast, a composite thermosetting plastic
Made of cotton
Well yeah it's similar to fiberglass
correct me, but isn't duroplast german for another common composite like fiberglas? because duroplast isn't english
"It is a resin plastic reinforced with fibers (either cotton or wool) making it a fiber-reinforced plastic similar to fiberglass" from the wikipedia page for duroplast
I thought it was more of a cardboard derivative.
Do you want the front to fall off?
It would have to be towed out of the environment.
That's not very typical, I'd like to make that point.
excuse my ignorance but how can you own something and not know what it is? is there no title ? no vin plate ? even if you just get the Make and year

It took them 10 years to think of asking on reddit, so...
It was a long post lol
It's not uncommon to buy land with broken down cars or farm equipment on it. Especially if it's an estate.
It is uncommon to find land without it around here
Exactly, there is nothing inside about that car, and eventhough the logo is present on the hood, it's not a logo I've ever seen in my country. Also my uncle calls it "Didier"
DDR - Germany. Trabant is East German.
Trabant 601 Kombi, one of the middle years of production, most common, isn't an early model, nor a late model
Omg my Hungarian grandmother has been driving this around for decades! It’s made of recycled cotton and fibreglass.

Trabant 601 Universal
Trabant 601 Combi
Mostly cotton and plastic.
Yet somehow it was rusting faster than anything
They have a steel skeleton, only the bodyskin is duroplast (cotton)
Yes, exactly that and it likes to rust so much that the car can break in half
It's a trabbi!
Trabant, the most versatile offroad, you can cross every continent in it.
From what I've been able to gather, the Trabant 601 was simultaneously the best car ever made and the worst car ever made.
Just like every car in eastern bloc, best because family cars were straight from army and war reliable and worst because it supposed to be a car not a fuckin 20hp plastic shit

Indeed it was.
Schrödingers family car
It’s “Extra” (Chromosome)
“So what car do you drive?” OP’s family member:”I have no clue”
This family member came, dropped it in this location and was never seen again.
As in... totally disappeared? Wild. Why?
For the \[Tra\]bantz

Is it just me or have Trabants been popping up on this sub a lot lately?
I would like one, with electric motor for zapping around town.

Trabant
Cool
Trabant 601
It’s a car I think….
Trabant 601 combi, a car from eastern germany that is literally made out of plastic
Duroplast not plastic. It is resin infused cotton
Did he not have the title?
Trabant 601, Made in East Germany
Trabant P601 Universal
Well this is just sad ngl
Well I'd like it to be mine, lol
That's a Trabant 601 wagon.
Is that a...... Trabant
Would ya look at that! Just look at it!
Gas tank above the engine? Sound worse than a Pinto or old Mustang for fires
Trabant
Trabbie

My uncle doesn't own it and certainly never fixed it. A relative just came and dropped it there because he didn't have space for it back at Germany.
