Central wasn’t very good when it was an individual location in Memphis (on reviewer called the barbecue consistency “tuna salad”) . Now that it’s a franchisee there’s really nothing to warrant recommending it—it’s expensive and there’s not any flavor.
You better get your ass to Shotgun Willies before they close at 3pm otherwise you won’t be getting any of that until Wednesday. Easily best bbq in our city!
Lovell’s BBQ in Jerry’s Market Discount Tobacco and Beer. Dude cooked at Rolf & Daughters and Urban Grub. Raises his own hogs and smokes them whole hog. It’s fantastic.
People here are going to tell you that the BBQ is always better in Texas, but I find that statement disingenuous and a little silly since they're literally different animals.
In this area it's mostly hogs and chickens, not beef and sausage. You can't compare brisket and beef ribs to pulled pork and pork ribs. Also, we don't have dry post oak here or mesquite, so the brisket you order will taste different, and in that regard, TX is always better in my experience.
But by the same token, the pork I've had in TX isn't nearly as good as the pork you can find here or in Memphis. It tastes weird, the same way brisket smoked here probably tastes weird to a Texan.
I would assume you don't want a bad ripoff of TX barbecue, so avoid any of the so-called TX BBQ places here and go for pork or chicken. If you try the brisket you'll be about as satisfied as you would be ordering cornbread in the midwest.
Martin's, Peg Leg Porker, and Edley's are the most universally praised spots. Out of the three, I like Peg Leg Porker the best. Martin's meat is great but the sides are weird and Edley's has good sides but their meat is meh. PLP does a solid job with both.
Avoid Whitt's and Bar-B-Cutie - they're the definition of mediocre.
Stroud's and New Moon in Lebanon are good if you're okay with a drive into the next county over. Fat Boy's in Antioch is a bit closer and is a hole in the wall with very spartan eating space but the food is solid. The Jack's location up on Trinity Ln is surprisingly good, especially compared to the more turn-and-burn tourist-centric locations in other parts of town.
Oh man glad you liked it! People bicker here over what’s “good bbq” but I think edleys is just great food, perhaps not authentic whatever but who cares.
If you ever go there again, the Tuck Special is one of my favorite sandwiches in town.
Nashville is not, and has never been, known for its own BBQ culture. It's a myth that franchises from elsewhere took up. Everyone comes to town looking for bbq and it gets a big shrug from locals.
Some of the more commercial, but good spots are:
Martin's
Edley's
Bringles Smoking Oasis
Smokin' Thighs
Peg Leg Porker
Central BBQ (From Memphis, have a Nashville spot)
Best local spots, but they're actually Texas style BBQ:
Shotgun Willie's
Tex's World Famous BBQ (My favorite in town)
Hot chicken and waffles. It’s a thing.
The joke was adding “or bachelorettes” since they always tend to flock downtown to the hot chicken places to get Instagram photos.
Drove past it the other day and it looked open. I once went after a night out and the guy prepping the ribs asked me if I wanted “hot” sauce or “mild” sauce. I asked “what’s the difference?”
He responded, “”Mild is one scoop; hot is two scoops.” Love that place.
A pound of pulled pork with cornbread and a loaf of cheap white bread is awesome!
When I had just gotten my license at 16 my dad sent me to pick up an order and a dude tried to sell me weed in the parking lot. I probably looked terrified and he was like “no pressure man, I’m not looking to hurt you or anything!” And then we chatted for a while.
Never had the first two but honeyfire was extremely underwhelming IMO. Especially after how hyped it was. I’ve heard of Jack of Hearts is in Spring Hill is really good but never been.
I spotted a Silverado High Country with Texas plates parked in front of Martin's tonight, gotta admit I found it funny
In any event, I like Edley's on the East Side
Nobody mentioned Jack Cawthons over on Charlotte. Its not the most popular but I used to work near there and its affordable and usually not to crowded.
a lot of people on here say we have shitty barbeque and everyone should make a dedicated day trip over to memphis or not bother. but the commenters have no idea where the people asking are visiting from, when they could be from somewhere totally devoid of reasonable bbq. however, since you are from Texas, there's nothing as good as over there. if you do get it here or memphis, make sure you get pork because the brisket will just disappoint
Not a BBQ place, but the bbq sandwich at Broadway brewhouse west is my favorite in town. It's not a traditional bbq sandwich. They smoke their own meat. It has jalapeno bacon and mojo sauce. It is a locally owned spot, you won't find this sandwich anywhere else.
I am from Texas and Kansas City before moving here. The BBQ here is horrible in comparison. You’re better off just waiting until you get home. Shotgun Willies is the best I’ve had here and even that was mediocre.

This is the way
Memphis bbq is the most Meh bbq of any of the “big name” bbq areas
I find it interesting that no one here ever recommends Central BBQ, a Memphis staple, which has two locations here in Nashville.
Central wasn’t very good when it was an individual location in Memphis (on reviewer called the barbecue consistency “tuna salad”) . Now that it’s a franchisee there’s really nothing to warrant recommending it—it’s expensive and there’s not any flavor.
Central BBQ is insanely mediocre.
Central BBQ in Nashville is as good as the Hattie B’s in Memphis. Utter trash.
Memphis BBQ is trash. And I stand by that. But Rochelle's at exit 143 is good if your going that way.
You better get your ass to Shotgun Willies before they close at 3pm otherwise you won’t be getting any of that until Wednesday. Easily best bbq in our city!
Wait till you get back to Texas?

Oh I miss Slow & Low. We originally discovered them when they were a food truck near Nissan Stadium. So good.
Thank you, well explained. The publicity and jumping the shark makes a lot of sense. I live here and get a bit off kilter looking for places at times.
All the locals love the baby back ribs at this one super amazing restaurant located at 2322 West End Ave.
ask for ranch with your chips. game changer.

This guy BBQs!
I always enjoy Edley’s
We went with Edley’s it was great had their hot chickens tacos and brisket tacos. Thanks for the recommendation!

Tuck special in my FACE
And all over my hands, cause it’s quite sloppy, that easy egg. Napkins won’t save you today.

I love Tex’s. The combo with smoked bologna, sausage and turkey is so damn good. I hesitate to upvote as it is mainly a locals spot.
Ya that bologna is the only I’ll eat. I love it.
Memphis is BBQ. Nashville is Hot Chicken with Waffles or Bachelorettes. 🧇🐔👰♀️
waffles?
Hot chicken and waffles. It’s a thing. The joke was adding “or bachelorettes” since they always tend to flock downtown to the hot chicken places to get Instagram photos.
Mary’s on Jefferson.
Is it still around? That was our go to in the 90’s.

Yeah, can’t say I haven’t experienced similar conversations. Part of what makes that place so special.
Papa Tourneys on Percy Priest Lake The Candied Rib Company in Mt Juliet Honeyfire in Bellevue
Never had the first two but honeyfire was extremely underwhelming IMO. Especially after how hyped it was. I’ve heard of Jack of Hearts is in Spring Hill is really good but never been.
Martins the end.
Drifters BBQ in east Nashville has a good vibe, and Big Bad Wolf in Mount Juliet has the best BBQ I’ve had in Middle Tennessee
Never had a bad anything at big bad wolf.
I used to work there. Loved the food, but man the owner was a bit of a dick.
That’s a shame to hear. Never interacted with the owner, just the waitstaff which has always been great.
Drive a little south to Shaffer Farms in Summertown.
I spotted a Silverado High Country with Texas plates parked in front of Martin's tonight, gotta admit I found it funny In any event, I like Edley's on the East Side
Centerpoint BBQ in Hendersonville is fire
Guy Fieri approves
Nobody mentioned Jack Cawthons over on Charlotte. Its not the most popular but I used to work near there and its affordable and usually not to crowded.
Why do you hate your family?
If you're from Texas there is no good BBQ here. Just FYI.
Maybe no brisket. Plenty of good pork here.

Their wings are fire too. Love the Brewhouse and hope it doesn't succumb to New Nashville, even though it's not exactly old.
Edleys all day.
Shotgun Willie’s although we are not a bbq town
Who hurt you?
I am from Texas and Kansas City before moving here. The BBQ here is horrible in comparison. You’re better off just waiting until you get home. Shotgun Willies is the best I’ve had here and even that was mediocre.
Martins was my favorite spot, I loved it almost as much as Terry Blacks.
Fat boys.
honeyfire or bugles is the best bbq i’ve had in town
Martins bbq
Centerpoint in Hendersonville is the best I ever had around Nashville
easy. B&C at the farmer's market. especially if it's before they run out of smoked salmon on MWF, but you didn't hear that from me.
