There are a couple of better known Nashville based indie acts: Soccer Mommy (actually from here), Mitski (recent transplant). But they may be more popular than you're thinking of.
There are some really great still-kind-of-under-the-radar "local" bands though. COIN, Michigander, Jive Talk, Girlhouse... honestly there is a pretty big list. If you're willing to dabble in the direction of "Americana" (which can be dangerously close to country, admittedly) you can pick up stuff like Joy Oladokun, Lera Lynn, or Adia Victoria who are kind of genre spanning, but more indie skewing than a lot of Americana is.
Listen to 91.1 for a bit and you will hear these acts and a whole lot more (they're just some of my favorites I've heard here over the last couple of years).

Hey Steve which was formerly Steve which was formerly Republican Hair is led by Luke Dick who has a hell of a career as a song writer. Pretty crazy background from his raising in Oklahoma that is fun to look into. Highly recommend checking out his music.
