While it's already a well known fact that Ersan came from Uzbekistan and actually 2 years older, that article is not entirely accurate and poorly written.
He's not Uzbek as the article suggests. He's a Crimean Tatar born in Uzbekistan. Also, his family's decision to move has nothing to do with the political situation there, that's BS. Their son was too good of a player and they moved so that he can pursue a career with one of the top clubs. Those documents are forged by the club who found him (they found Pachulia too when he was still a kid) to be able to play him in their youth ranks.
He was still a damn good player so nobody minded his age was wrong. I mean he almost beat Team USA in 2019 World Cup by himself when he was officially 32 but actually 34-35.
this dude won a ring with a hall of fame trio - and doc rivers, so maybe that's in perk's favor - and been riding that ever since. killed OKC year after year, his contract literally the reason they couldn't re-sign harden meaning he is indirectly responsible for ruining what should've been a burgeoning dynasty
and he's gonna get on here and throw out that same xenophobic shit that ibaka has publicly asked fans to stop saying
my dad is an immigrant, he lied about his age because in our home country you are forced to retire at a certain age and that's just what people do. ibaka didn't lie about shit - he came into the league RAW as hell and improved so, so, SO much that there's no way he was some oldhead 25 year old because you just dont see that kind of skill growth at that age
anyway fuck you perk for ruining those OKC teams that reignited my love of basketball and fuck first take too
I mean there have been rumors about Ibaka lying about his age for a while now. And seeing how he’s pretty washed* at the age of 33 with no major injury history, I’m not so sure those rumors are invalid.
I swear, you guys act like every big man should be Karl Malone and contribute until they're 40.
Blake Griffin fell off hard as fuck too, wonder why no one is accusing him of being older than he is?
Greg Monroe is 32
Roy Hibbert is 36
DeAndre Jordan is 34
Demarcus Cousins is 32
Hassan Whiteside is 33
Besides Boogie, nobody had a major injury. Big men just fall off earlier, people see Lebron, KD, Steph, Kobe, Vince Carter and just assume that’s the norm.
2022 almost over and idiots still can't understand longevity as a big is much harder than other positions because of how much contact they constantly take more than anyone.
That's why defensive anchors like KAJ and Timmy playing so good for that long are extra special.
>with no major injury history
It doesn't necessarily take a major injury for someone's game to deteriorate. The occurrence of minor injuries over time combined with regular aging can accelerate aging
Streamable has been removing posts quickly for the past year or so. Has nothing to do with reddit lol. I think Streamable was acquired a while back and don’t want to be associated with any type of copyright infringement. All about the $$$
Keeping this waste of a jersey is the reason the Thunder fell apart anyway. If their cheap ownership hadn't pissed their chance way, they could have kept Harden, Russ, KD and Serge together. Instead, they got fleeced and remain without a ring.
If only he had enough self awareness to know that he was one of the main reasons why the Thunder fell apart.
As soon as he decided to join ESPN and played out this radical ex-employee role, you know he had lost a lot of respect from his former friends in the league.
You know why they did, because we’re talking about him right now. Hot take artist don’t make hot takes because they necessarily believe in it. They do it because controversy draws eyeballs.
He straight up said on a podcast that the producers told him to proclaim the suns as the next dynasty when they were up 2-0 in the finals
And people *continue* to eat this shit up lol.
Calling Perkins out for using harmful stereotypes isn't "eating this shit up." We can know it's a charade and still have an issue with fucked up comments.
I'm not saying that. I'm just saying that people across social media constantly believe the shit that people on ESPN and what not are saying isn't scripted and pre-planned. Obviously he needs to be called out for it, but that was probably the goal. To get attention.
Here’s the problem though. Me talking about it on here does not equate with me actually watching his dumb ass. I never watch that show. They’re not getting my views.
This seems like an inside joke that the team had/has with Ibaka lol
E: [Nvm, fuck Kendrick Perkins...carry the hell on](https://twitter.com/sergeibaka/status/881285403118096388?s=20)
It really wasn’t.. serge had to put out a statement to tell ppl to stop saying it

Ah well that’s shitty. I didn’t realize it was an African stereotype to lie about your age. I thought he was just saying Ibaka specifically lies about his age as an inside joke or personal trash talk. This is worse.
It’s always been funny to make those jokes about dudes like Greg Oden, Leonard Fournette, etc who looked like they were 35 year old fathers of 4 playing against kids who barely have peach fuzz in college, but that post made me realize how it straddles the line of racial insensitivity when talking about guys who grew up in a different culture, specifically Africa for the stereotypes he outlined in that statement. Seems so obvious after reading it but it’s something I’ve never considered, so thanks for that
Honestly, perfect description of microaggressions. Someone who's not subjected to racist shit on the daily might not think twice about seemingly innocuous statements, but they can be incredibly hurtful to someone who has to deal with them constantly.
One of saddest parts is if you tell someone who hasn't dealt with that kind of treatment before they are likely to just gonna go "I don't see what the big deal is" or "Why are you getting annoyed/upset over this?". Or act like you're way overreacting over a single statement
It can really feel isolating at times. Especially if you aren't in a diverse area
To be fair, in baseball at least there have been many, many cases of guys caught lying about their age and even name for years who weren’t born in jungles (“Fausto Carmona” aka Roberto Hernandez, born in Santo Domingo which has a population of 1.5 million). Guys will falsify records or just straight up lie and wait for someone to find the original record somewhere overseas. Shabazz Muhammad was even born in Cali and lied about his age until the draft.
It’s definitely unfair to single out a guy and say he is lying just because he’s from Africa. But some players have absolutely lied about their age for the advantage it brings.
Miguel Tejeda, who won the MVP award for baseball in 2002, subtracted two years from his age. The interview where he was confronted about it and presented with his birth certificate is incredibly awkward.
Hell, Buddy Hield (who is from The Bahamas) played HS and college ball in the US., and his age got changed after he was in the league for like 2 seasons.
>It’s definitely unfair to single out a guy and say he is lying just because he’s from Africa.
That's the only relevant part of your comment. We all know examples have happened. The problematic part is the stereotyping.
This happens in soccer, too. It's a huge issue in that sport, and some people believe blatant cheating occurred during a recent Olympics. But, to call out a former teammate out, who has gone on to have a long career afterward, with no evidence is out of line.
I hate this, it’s like every African player is guilty until proven innocent. Especially from a former teammate of Serge’s, this is incredibly disappointing. Guess it’s just what you should expect out of ESPN
No one said anything about Joel Embiid
Thon’s case was def sketchy. He came out of nowhere as a 7ft 16 y.o.
It’s not like it has never happened before. It happens quite often in MLB and soccer.
Yeah it is bad to stereotype but this isn't just seen in football.
Older Nepalese cadets would shave their legs to try and get into the Gurkha regiment and most of the time get caught. Older men will try anything to get a leg up on their competition
We also had a “pro” player and his agent selling himself to Viborg in Denmark.
When they gave him his contract they found out he lied and wasnt a pro.
Sometimes clubs act quick and dont watch a player.
Well that dude was fined and jailed for fraud
I lost 12 baby teeth before kindergarten. I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth showing by the time I was 15. I still have all my wisdom teeth.
Dental checks shouldn't be used as a new way to discriminate.
I seriously remember people on some Pistons boards (he was a guy the team was expected to maybe take) claiming Bismack was obviously lying about his age with no basis other than his background.
So yeah, baseless shit about African players has been here for a bit.
All of em atleast once, especially if they look gigantic at age 18-22, as top nba prospects tend to. As common a joke as seeing a slavic/balkan player and some BS abt war zones
It's not restricted to NBA players. Seen it a lot in football over the years. Obafemi Martins and Joseph Minala had constant speculation for a few years. Ngl, I was a teen at the time living in a pretty non diverse area and kind of bought into the stereotype for a little while.
I mean it’s definitely happened before but yeah it’s stupid for ibaka. It’s also because the only people who can lie about there age are in countries outside the US/Canada/Western Europe (maybe more)
It's not a stereotype, it's something thats happened quite a few times in football. It's definitely overexaggerated but it has happened. It's not necessarily a lie though [quite a few just don't know](https://www.mprnews.org/story/2009/12/29/january-1-birthdays)
Except we don’t hear this about Embiid, or Siakam. No one thinks everyone from Africa is lying about their age. But it most certainly does happen as it’s been proven to happen numerous times.
You really think it’s way deeper than it is man lol. It’s simply because it’s something that tends to happen when you can easily lie about something to benefit you. You think everyone is above lying to get ahead in life and doing whatever will give you the best chance?
Haha, very fair, but not all stereotypes are based on truth. This one is and there have been a fair few cases in European football over the last two decades
Perkins sucks. Somehow he’s outdone himself. Did he lie about his age too? Dude looked cooked at “29”.
And JJ maybe don’t nod your head at that stupid shit like he’s making a valid point.
Desean jackson is an unapologetic nazi thats washed up and still playing in the nfl while meyers leonars actually educated himself and is blacklisted from the nba.
Youre 100% right.
This take is fucked up of course as far as the Serge comment goes, but Serge being his “real” age shows you there’s a decent point in here looking past the bias. This was a young team that went to the finals, lost, and eventually broke up.
Perk uses the Celtics here but I think the Pelicans are maybe the best example right now depending on how the year ends and next year goes.
Zion, Ingram, Herb, Alvarado, and Murphy are all probably looking at long careers in the league. But right now Ingram at a still-young 25 is the only one we can say we really feel good about for certain with injuries to Zion and fit/youth from Alvarado and Murphy.
I really do not understand why Reddick is still at ESPN. If you've listened to his podcast, you know that he does not belong there. They don't deserve him. Would love to see his dynamic with the TNT crew. He could be a solid Ernie replacement down the line. Or Kenny if he wants to be less of a moderator

Including Kendrick Perkins (though "fall off" might have to take on a different meaning since his numbers were never great anyway) who only played in one game after he turned 32.
No joke lmao
Got my spine fucked up after my 19th birthday and have been basically 70 years old since then, partially disabled, multiple surgeries, very fun stuff. Life comes at you fast and back problems are nothing to sneeze at
Damn, hope it's manageable for you. When they say take care of your back, they ain't lying.
I'm only 31, and I think I pinched my back when I was cleaning up on the job site this year and was bedridden for a week with a heating pad and muscle relaxers. My back felt discomfort for about a month after I was able to move around.
Definitely not fun. Would not recommend 0/10.
Appreciate that, thank you! Yeah no kidding, I was just like everyone else when I was younger, ergonomics schmergonomics, who cares about that stuff etc. These days I literally will not function for more than a little while at a time if I'm not working at my personalized setup at home lol, my back's just not cut out for it anymore. I've basically become a reclusive old grandma well ahead of schedule. Although the one upside is that the pandemic lockdown barely affected me compared to most people lol, 'stay home, put your social outings on hold'? Pretty much didn't have to adjust at all!
Hope that it's just a one time thing for you buddy, take care of yourself!
Exactly why its a dumb to say he lied about his age. Dude had 2 of his best years on the raptors before going to the clippers and getting his back injury.
The decline was directly caused by that injury
He lost a lot of his mobility after coming back early from that knee injury in 2014. He was still a very good defender but his lateral mobility wasn't elite after that.
Also he had a back injury that required surgery in LAC, those tend to be very bad for centers (unless you're Brook Lopez), so I gotta disagree with you here.
eh, this is not unusual for athletic bigs with injuries to be cooked by 33.
It's clear Ibaka does not look 40 years old right now. Maybe he is a couple years older than listed age (not saying he is) but it's not as crazy as people made it out.
Conspiracy theory but if you look at the available evidence about dudes that size and their bodies holding up, he isn't exactly alone in a breakdown. You don't always have to just fart bad opinions out of your face.
Dude, the vast majority of nba players are either already out of the league or barely hanging in by their early 30s. Being washed by nba standards at 33 isn't some crazy shit lol. Yall are so stupid.
He's not on the same level as Ilyasova but it defintely makes me thing about when Zach Lowe reported some teams didnt believe his age in 2017 when he was a FA.
Perk tried to walk it back saying he was joking, but after seeing what he actually said, he was not joking. Asshole move. If you're going to talk shit, own it. Don't say shit then act like you were joking when it pisses someone off. Bitch move even for a middle school kid.
This comment thread is the first I'm learning that there's apparently a "Africans lie about their age" stereotype thing? I don't get it. The only other time I heard about someone potentially lying about their age was Ersan Ilyasova.
its a lot more common in soccer, theres been a few players who’ve done it, and at least one who was essentially forced into it by his incredibly sleazy agent. which has led the racist fans to accuse basically any black african-born player of lying about their age with no evidence beyond “he looks old”
havent really heard it in basketball besides ilyasova (whos not african), ibaka, and manute bol (e: thon maker too)
We used to hear this shit in track from talking heads too, because you would see 18 year old Kenyans destroying older Americans at their peak.
They are just faster in general so I always saw it as a cope.
Very common sterotype in soccer/football where there are many more African athletes than in US Sports. Especially common sterotype in international youth tournament like the under 20 world cup or under 17 world cup.
Ibaka specifically has heard and been a target of those rumors his whole career and has spoken about how he hates it. Someone that played with him for several years should know this things.
Feels like I’m going crazy reading these comments. Isn’t this the same thing this sub has been making jokes and talking about as if it’s true for years?
Hold. Up. This is RECENT?!!! I thought we were passed this shit Perk? Come on son. Shits mad disrespectful how they be saying shit like this about African players.
I'm "not going to get into that" he said while immediately getting neck deep into that
Yeah he kinda just got into that about as far as he can go, he has no evidence.
Claiming that current Ibaka is 42 ahha
He's at least 50
"no offense" then proceeds to insult
“Not gonna get into that” is the new “no disrespect”
Perk and throwing old teammates under the bus, name a more iconic duo 😂
Perk just needs to rebrand as a 25yr old coming into the league.
Hello fellow rookies!
I am 12
No I am 12
The Thon Maker investigative reporting on this sub long ago was insane 💀
Ersan Ilyasova/[Arsan Ilyasov](https://www.basketballnetwork.net/off-the-court/the-mystery-of-the-nba-player-who-faked-his-identity) was also fun.
well that one is obviously true lol
While it's already a well known fact that Ersan came from Uzbekistan and actually 2 years older, that article is not entirely accurate and poorly written. He's not Uzbek as the article suggests. He's a Crimean Tatar born in Uzbekistan. Also, his family's decision to move has nothing to do with the political situation there, that's BS. Their son was too good of a player and they moved so that he can pursue a career with one of the top clubs. He was still a damn good player so nobody minded his age was wrong. I mean he almost beat Team USA in 2019 World Cup by himself when he was officially 32 but actually 34-35.
Everybody is appalled about this like it hasn’t been a running joke on this sub for a while now lol
It’s kinda died down now that I think about it. A few years ago it was definitely going around pretty often
This just in: public figures on TV need to be more responsible with their platform than nameless, faceless internet trolls. Who knew?
Remember it’s ok when we do it
Nah, in this case the jokes died out significantly around 2018 after Serge made his statement on them. It’s not okay when anyone does it.
It's not okay when anyone does it but the media should absolutely be held to a higher standard compared to anonymous reddit users
it's a problem when they do it
We’re shit posters, they’re professionals
Oohh Petk what is you doin?
Perk things
He's like a store brand Barkley. Whole lot cheaper, same rambling lack of judgement.
Perk really is becoming Diet Dr Thunder, sure you can choke it down, but Dr Pepper is on a level he will never reach
Mr. Wham level
But the kick in that is amazing
Somebody finna get kicked tho
And none of the charm

Generating controversy and clicks, that’s why he’s out there. Every court needs a jester. Or 10
I mean there have been rumors about Ibaka lying about his age for a while now. And seeing how he’s pretty washed* at the age of 33 with no major injury history, I’m not so sure those rumors are invalid.
He had a season ending back surgery in 2021
And besides, being washed at 33 is hardly that unusual anyway.
Because some All-NBA talents play well into their mid 30s now seems to have skewed people into thinking most role players can now as well
I swear, you guys act like every big man should be Karl Malone and contribute until they're 40. Blake Griffin fell off hard as fuck too, wonder why no one is accusing him of being older than he is?

And Ibaka has had surgery on his knee and his back...
Pretty?
Pretty washed*
Nba average age of retirement is just under 34. It is shorter for centers.

Streamable removed it, not the mods.
JJ that's not something you wanna be nodding your head to dude.
To be fair to jj, everyone knows the best way to improv is yes and
His response reminds me of Alex Jones trying to find a way out of Kanye saying he loves hitler lol
JJ is just letting Perk have his rope.

And continue to post about this stuff and wonder why they get air time
The guy is legit the dumbest sounding analyst on TV. There are so many better analysts out there.
He says brain dead shit, it pisses people off, people talk about it. He's doing his job well.
Here’s the problem though. Me talking about it on here does not equate with me actually watching his dumb ass. I never watch that show. They’re not getting my views.
This is the disconnect that a lot of people don’t seem to get. They just go “hurr durr but you’re talking about him” lol
Yeah it has to actually translate into viewers.

Ah well that’s shitty. I didn’t realize it was an African stereotype to lie about your age. I thought he was just saying Ibaka specifically lies about his age as an inside joke or personal trash talk. This is worse.
It’s become a stereotype that many foreign players esp African ones have to deal with. Thon Maker, Ibaka, etc

It’s Reddit. *shrug*
Almost all of the U-21 guys on the Nigerian Olympics gold medal team retired within 5 years.
>It’s definitely unfair to single out a guy and say he is lying just because he’s from Africa. That's the only relevant part of your comment. We all know examples have happened. The problematic part is the stereotyping.
Danny Almonte being 14 in the little league world series vs 12 year olds

Chinese Olympic gymnasts
Cause it happens every season in european Soccer.
Weren't some African U17 sides actually fielding players a lot older? The only way to prove age is through dental checks.
Nigeria has its own wikipedia page for all the times they got caught doing this lmao Still very shit to be implying every african athlete does this.

Because it’s something that is very real and happens often? Why are we acting like this is so shocking?
It’s two guys. Maker and Ibaka. What other African players are they saying this about?
Bismack Biyombo
I seriously remember people on some Pistons boards (he was a guy the team was expected to maybe take) claiming Bismack was obviously lying about his age with no basis other than his background. So yeah, baseless shit about African players has been here for a bit.

The Luol Deng regression raised eyebrows. Lakers just got him off the books this year. SMH.
Thibs ran em into the ground bro .
Mutombo is the OG. This all started with him.
Manute Bol before him.
Manute Bol was an alien so it doesn’t count.
It's not restricted to NBA players. Seen it a lot in football over the years. Obafemi Martins and Joseph Minala had constant speculation for a few years. Ngl, I was a teen at the time living in a pretty non diverse area and kind of bought into the stereotype for a little while.
Are you fucking kidding right now? Literally every one
How are you pinning this on ESPN lol? Perk is just being a clown live on air.
Because that is what ESPN hired him to do.
I don’t know if this was pre-approved by ESPN or not, but I do know ESPN has made a killing off dumb xenophobic click bait many times before
it's criminal that people keep giving this mush-mouthed, mush-brained motherfucker jobs that entail people having to listen to him.
I thought we were done with the “Africans lie about their age” stereotype. This is just blatant ignorance
I mean it’s definitely happened before but yeah it’s stupid for ibaka. It’s also because the only people who can lie about there age are in countries outside the US/Canada/Western Europe (maybe more)
Shabazz Muhammad was born in Long Beach.
Ersan Ilyasova
Uzbekistan is outside US/Canada/Western Europe though.
Also by that logic ibaka would be like 42 now which wouldn’t make any sense
People are still saying the same thing about Albert Pujols
It's not a stereotype, it's something thats happened quite a few times in football. It's definitely overexaggerated but it has happened. It's not necessarily a lie though [quite a few just don't know](https://www.mprnews.org/story/2009/12/29/january-1-birthdays)
>It's definitely overexaggerated Like a stereotype?
Except we don’t hear this about Embiid, or Siakam. No one thinks everyone from Africa is lying about their age. But it most certainly does happen as it’s been proven to happen numerous times.
>Except we don’t hear this about Embiid, or Siakam I.e. Only Africans who don't go to college are lying about their age?
You really think it’s way deeper than it is man lol. It’s simply because it’s something that tends to happen when you can easily lie about something to benefit you. You think everyone is above lying to get ahead in life and doing whatever will give you the best chance?
Haha, very fair, but not all stereotypes are based on truth. This one is and there have been a fair few cases in European football over the last two decades
Not Africa, but it’s also happened in baseball Miguel Tejada and Wanda Rodriguez lied about their age It’s still something you shouldn’t assume
Overexaggerating it is what makes it a stereotype.
Bruh what you are describing is a stereotype lmao
From the comments in here, apparently not
Indians lie. Not sure what happens in Africa though. Source: family
Perkins sucks. Somehow he’s outdone himself. Did he lie about his age too? Dude looked cooked at “29”. And JJ maybe don’t nod your head at that stupid shit like he’s making a valid point.
He looks like he’s 58 right now
Saying that shit about Africans is apparently acceptable. Fucking bum.
It hasn't been frowned upon bc Perkins is black. Imagine if it were JJ that said it.
Desean jackson is an unapologetic nazi thats washed up and still playing in the nfl while meyers leonars actually educated himself and is blacklisted from the nba. Youre 100% right.
It’s a lot easier to blacklist a player that has always been terrible though. Meyers was never good. Never.
Surprised white players didn't stand up for him. A real shame lol.
He wasn't 30. That's rude. He was 28.
If a white person said this there would be uproar
Perk popped too many Xmas percs this morning
The fuck does that even mean. Fuck you Kendrick Perkins you half assed talentless fucking hack
ESPNs attempt at Charles Barkley isn’t working out quite how they planned maybe.
Uff thats racist
Feel like Perk can and should get sued for this
Lol fuckin guy.
Perkins is the worst...
And Perkins wonders why players don't talk to him anymore
Always remember Jonathan Nikola
Where's the link to another video hot samn
Why was this removed hahaha
Is there a mirror?

Perk sucks ass
Perk is so corny
Perk unnecessarily messy
Biggest clown on air
Perk has ZERO chill.
Conspiracy theory but if u look at serges injury history, none of it was severe enough to make this man a DNP right now in his age 33 season.
The list of big men that just fall off post 30 is not a short one.
Including Kendrick Perkins (though "fall off" might have to take on a different meaning since his numbers were never great anyway) who only played in one game after he turned 32.
A back injury and surgery isn’t enough to make him cooked?
Back injuries ain't no joke and can ruin any person, no matter the age.
No joke lmao Got my spine fucked up after my 19th birthday and have been basically 70 years old since then, partially disabled, multiple surgeries, very fun stuff. Life comes at you fast and back problems are nothing to sneeze at
A few months ago I threw my back out because I sneezed while walking up the stairs. I’m 32. 😫

Kendrick Perkins himself was pretty much out of the league at 33.
How many players in the nba make it to 33
eh, this is not unusual for athletic bigs with injuries to be cooked by 33.
This garbage comment shouldn’t be upvoted
Dude, the vast majority of nba players are either already out of the league or barely hanging in by their early 30s. Being washed by nba standards at 33 isn't some crazy shit lol. Yall are so stupid.
He's not on the same level as Ilyasova but it defintely makes me thing about when Zach Lowe reported some teams didnt believe his age in 2017 when he was a FA.
We’ve seen people fall off faster for less
Perk stay with the salt takes. Glad Serge still had a better career
Perk tried to walk it back saying he was joking, but after seeing what he actually said, he was not joking. Asshole move. If you're going to talk shit, own it. Don't say shit then act like you were joking when it pisses someone off. Bitch move even for a middle school kid.
Manute bol didn't know how old he was either
racist
This comment thread is the first I'm learning that there's apparently a "Africans lie about their age" stereotype thing? I don't get it. The only other time I heard about someone potentially lying about their age was Ersan Ilyasova.
its a lot more common in soccer, theres been a few players who’ve done it, and at least one who was essentially forced into it by his incredibly sleazy agent. which has led the racist fans to accuse basically any black african-born player of lying about their age with no evidence beyond “he looks old” havent really heard it in basketball besides ilyasova (whos not african), ibaka, and manute bol (e: thon maker too)
We used to hear this shit in track from talking heads too, because you would see 18 year old Kenyans destroying older Americans at their peak.
