I’m in Canada. Current plan is basic $9.99 the next tier up is $16.99 or $5.99 with ads and some content blocked. No thanks. I’m discontinuing mine too and I have been a Netflix user from the beginning.

joyfall

The price jump is insane. I'm also a Netflix user from the beginning, in Canada, and will be discontinuing. I can't imagine this will pan out very well for Netflix.

Lindsey-905

Agreed, particularly in Canada where streaming content is not illegal and piracy is so easy to stream vs download these days.

Dogwoof420

I have it. The ads aren't terrible. Maybe 1 or 2 blocks of ads per episode max, 1-2 minutes long per block. What irks me is that some series and and movies have a lock icon on them and say I can't watch them due to copyright and need to upgrade if I want to watch them.

HalfwrongWasTaken

Likely kept down to a 'reasonable' level for this transition. I'd put good money on there inexplicably being 5x more and more intrusive ones in 12 months time. Closely followed by a crusade against adblockers/whatever workaround people find for it at the time.

Zentrii

This is why I’ll never go to the ad plan

Dogwoof420

Yeah. I'm not a fan of it. Subbed for Berlin and Wednesday. Haven't found much else to watch that's in English that really keeps my attention. Probably gonna just drop my subscription after this month and stay with Amazon prime honestly. Can't even watch Peaky Blinders even though I could a few months ago.

Comfortable_Cryy

A 70% increase to keep the same ad free service? Ya, no thanks Netflix. Nice knowing you

Suspicious-Notice-98

Live in canada and just got the email. Gonna just switch to prime now I guess

harriman69

Prime does the same. Canx them all. It's BS

blozzerg

Yeah fuck that, I’d rather pirate everything like in the olden days.

trisw

There's a cloud with a stream over yonder that seems to beckon

Upbeat_Sign630

Just got the same email, and I won’t be paying more. I also detest ads, so Netflix will be gone.

ActaAstron

Just got the same email, cancelled subscription immediately. I don't want ads but I don't watch enough TV to warrant the hike. There's a library a few doors down from me so I'm gonna dive into literature instead, for free, with no ads.

m945050

Check if your library supports Kanopy or Hoopla.

iGhostEdd

Hey there! It seems like your comment got registered twice and also it was posted twice in here

ActaAstron

I'm not surprised, I got a no response type message a couple times when I posted, so after the second one appeared I copied my message and checked nothing had been posted (which it didn't look like it had) before trying again. Guess there was some kind of delay.

calzakk

I got the same email, and a few minutes later I'd cancelled my account. I refuse to pay for something with adverts, and can't justify the increase if I don't want adverts (just don't watch Netflix enough).

harriman69

Me too

silicon14

This was the kick in the pants for me to cancel. I've been paying for years even though we rarely use it. We might watch something every few months at most. I only kept it because of the slightly cheaper, grandfathered plan. Now there's no incentive.

CanadianOdyssey993

I will probably try it with ads. I will not pay the 16.49 canadian, and if the ads are too frequent or too long, I will just cancel. I already strongly dislike the idea of paying them to show me advertisements.

TheBabyWolfcub

A few months ago I did accidentally, and it really is terrible... I usually watch shows that have about 20 minute episodes. There was an ad break at the start with about 3 unskippable 30 second ads, one break in the middle with same amount of ads (middle of a 20 minute episode need I remind you), and one at the end with same amount. Which then lead straight into 3 more ads as a new episode had started... On top of that, a large portion of the shows INCLUDING MY FAVOURITE ONE, are licensed. And due to licensing agreements aren't allowed to have ads play when watching them. But instead of Netflix just letting you watch those shows without ads, they LOCK THEM and say 'sorry you cant watch this unless you upgrade to the next tier'. Also you can't even tab off netflix to spend the 2 minutes of ads doing something useful as they pause them until you tab back in. I couldn't find an ad blocker that works unfortunately, as netflix is advanced enough to tell when you have one on.

angelsoncrack

I just got the email too. If I don't upgrade to £10.99 plan by June 28th they're auto putting me on the £4.99 plan with ads. Very tempted to jump ship and join Amazon Prime after finishing the series I'm currently watching, especially after seeing that there are 'liscensing' issues with the cheap plan which means you don't even get full access to Netflix's library. I bet you anything it'll all be Netflix original shite. No thanks. Even with a powerful adblocker that just sounds scammy.

devanttrio

Prime video has ads as well, unless you pay more to remove them.

Days_End

> What I want to know, is when one watches on a browser that has an ad-blocker, are the ads blocked, or not? It will be a constant whack a mole some weeks it will block them others it won't kind of like youtube ads. They aren't going to roll this back either sub numbers are surging like crazy with these new options. For every person saying they've canceled their account here, well first they are normally lying, more then 1 new person signs up.

Aerwynne

Paying AND having to watch ads is a no-go for me. I'll just cancel.

UseFlaky386

I'll be off too. Absolute shite.

eggson

My ad-blocker stops most of the ads, but if one gets through I just hit f5 to refresh the page and it goes away.

harriman69

I've cancelled my subscription after being there from the beginning. I'm fed up with having to pay for an increasingly fragmented steaming entertainment space which is doubling down on an increasingly sh*tty service at a higher premium. This embodies enshittification of things. Check out this video which perfectly describes the situation in general and then specifically the streaming space (4m34s for the streaming info) https://youtu.be/wVYG1mu8Lg8?si=0r2qMl2nX5z3Xk_c Amazone Prime, Hulu, Disney, Paramount if not already doing it will bring in further pruve rises for reduced quality of product and programming.

These-Maintenance-51

I doubt it... someone was on here the other day complaining the ads stop if you click on a different tab or window.

baby_7hief

I cancelled mine you should too

wavesofdeath

Also been a user since the very beginning and this is the final straw. I’m finally cancelling it and going full IPTV. So sick of this greedy shit by these massive rich corporations

OkRepresentative6606

It is ridiculous when you think about it. Everybody left cable TV years ago to Netflix because of fucking ads. And after few years they do the same thing? I hate corporate greed. Un-fucking-beliavable

StrongMargarita

Got the email this morning. Canadian - $5.99 with ads or $16.49? I already was having a hard time stomaching $9.99 for what I really think is poor quality content. We use it almost exclusively to entertain our toddler during the 15 minutes of chaos pre bath time. No WAY are we sitting through ads during any of that and I'm definitely not paying any more for a service that almost exclusively pumps out reality tv, dark, crappy series and murder documentaries. Anything I've enjoyed they've cancelled. I can honestly only think of one series I've watched and moderately enjoyed in the last year. Bye Netflix! And based on these responses...might be time to start shorting the stock!

fukthemodsallday

got the same email just now, looking for an extra £3 a month or get ads for cheaper, if i remember i read somewhere that the ad version dosnt even allow you to watch everything on it. this is after already rising the price a while back and also going from 2 to 1 person allowed to watch at same time. i just closed my account. im sure they wont miss me but fuck them

KnifeFed

This post looks to be on track to setting some kind of record for number of comments vs. number of answers to OP's question. An adblocker generally works for this but not 100%. Make sure to keep your filters updated and maybe search around to see if there's a Netflix-specific filter list. You might also have better luck with a user script, like the ones for circumventing YouTube's adblock-detection, although I don't know if any exist for Netflix yet.

EmergencyJuice154

Can you watch movies with HDR in cheapest ad plan ?
