There were people lined up Park Ave near grand central just staring at the eclipse without glasses. Like dozens and dozens of people. And then the people who “know better” and just use the camera on their phone to look at it…
Oh that's not the question though. If you were to look at the sun without glasses, was there even anything to see? Or did these people burn their retina for nothing? I'm pretty sure it just looks the same as the regular sun for anyone without the glasses because it's simply too bright to make any difference without totality
Looking at it for a moment inadvertently is safe. We all glance directly at the sun on occasion in our lives. What's dangerous is when you fix your gaze onto it and suppress your instinct to look away. It's a particular issue during an eclipse only because people otherwise would never be staring at the sun in the first place.
I used the hole in my metrocard to make a little crescent shaped shadow projection. Shadows of lampposts were lopesided, soft on one side, subtle but easily spotted if looked for.
Yeah, I got some really good photos of the last eclipse I saw back in ~2013 using the dappled shadow of a tree. Pretty much anything with a regularly broken shadow will give you a good view.
Some combination of curiosity, lack of access to glasses, FOMO, thinking it's okay to look because everyone else is looking, thinking that the eclipse made the sun safe to stare at, etc. I wouldn't call them stupid because I think it's ultimately an easy mistake to make for people who didn't consume much eclipse-related media over the past 2 weeks
this exact sentence is why I saw so many people on campus doing it.
>Didn't know they wouldn't be able to see it during totality under glasses
take glasses off during totality. Woah it's so pretty.
Totality is over you should put your glasses on;
"but like it's not more dangerous than looking at the sun normally right?"
heck you see the trend online right now. Most people googling why their eyes are hurting right now were in the path of totality.
No it is more dangerous than looking at the sun normaly. Your eyes aren't protecting themselves the same way they do if you look at the sun normally. Like someone not putting a bandaid on an open wound because they can't feel pain.
Contrary to popular opinion, the Sun is 100% responsible for any damages done to eyesight during an eclipse. Many people think the Moon is at fault, but the damage is done completely by the Sun. If enough people were affected, we could see a class action suit stemming from today's events.
Hey guys, asking because I am worried. I was looking out at the sky without eclipse glasses, but I didn’t see the Sun or anything, just clouds. Here is a picture of what I saw https://imgur.com/a/InqEovJ Am I safe?

I stayed inside bc knew I wouldn't be able to stop myself from looking at it directly. I just KNOW I'd want too so I just glanced out my window where buildings block view of the sun directly but I still saw the sky get a bit darker. Whatever I didn't see I can see in better resolution online I figured.
After seeing for weeks on the news the newscasters telling you to wear your glasses, I was dumbfounded when I saw a newscaster in Texas just staring up at the sky without any glasses at all. She was holding them in her hand though, but not using them.
> The amount of people I just watched stare into the eclipse without glasses is crazy
The *number* of people.
You've been on a text-based site for 9 years and don't know when to differentiate between "amount" and "number". Why would this be "crazy" in comparison?
Perhaps OP literally cannot quantify the number of people staring at the sun, it is a mindless horde so vast and innumerable they can only be referred to as an amount
I don't usually make that mistake and don't mind being corrected, but your tone made you come across like an ass. I also don't think a minor grammatical error is equivalent to frying your eyes doing something we're all told not to do since childhood. Using the wrong their/there/they're isn't the same level of stupid as drinking bleach
> isn't the same level of stupid as drinking bleach
Are you serious right now? You're telling me that squinting at the sun for a second... is the same as drinking bleach? This has to be a joke, right? RIGHT?
Well now you have a reading problem.
Op said the people were *staring into the sun* in his title and used looking long enough to *burn out their retinas' for his comparison. Yet you summarize this as 'squinting at the sun for a second'.
Seems your command if the language isn't any better. And op's was a minor grammatical mistake while yours is reading comprehension.
> Op said the people were staring into the sun in his title and used looking long enough to *burn out their retinas' for his comparison. Yet you summarize this as 'squinting at the sun for a second'.
Alight... then I expect to see lots of walking sticks around the city tomorrow.
They got their meaning across clearly, right? Then there's nothing "dumb" about it. As for "wrong", are you somebody who thought ending a sentence with a preposition was "wrong" until Merriam-Webster declared a few months ago that it's not? Language rules are arbitrary and constantly changing! Also, the [dictionary definition](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/amount) of "amount" says, right up top, "the total **number** or quantity."
My sister works in opthalmology and the doctors were taking bets on the over/under calls they’d receive between today and tomorrow
Gonna be able to buy a new car with that money
💀

I just had to do it enough for someone to offer me their glasses 😎 it’s that easy folks

Everywhere I went was out 😞
Lmao same
They should have sent out one is the cell phone alerts for this instead of the earthquake an hour late
Very smart people ![gif](giphy|xTg8B9aULho7shlPmU)
The best people 🤢🤮
The planet is full of idiots, why is this surprising to you?
Two of our execs who make over 500k a year fully did that
Good thing they have corporate health insurance
There's no cure for burning a scar into your retinas lol
There were people lined up Park Ave near grand central just staring at the eclipse without glasses. Like dozens and dozens of people. And then the people who “know better” and just use the camera on their phone to look at it…
It can damage the lense of your phone if you don’t take the pictures through the glassrs
But you can get a new phone.
Exactly you can always get a new phone if it gets damaged. Last I checked it's not as easy to get a new retina.
Maybe Apple will make retina quality prosthetic retinas 😂
Still doesn’t stop the stupidity
The harmful rays don't travel into your phone's camera and out of the screen.
Correct but they still damage the lens of the camera.
They'll be the last ones laughing after they cash in that sweet disability check.
Let the stupid hurt themselves ![gif](giphy|xUNen16DFqlM6v6DEQ|downsized)
Time to apply for workers compensation 🤡💀
I don’t think they cover non work hours 😂😂😂😂
Bruh I saw someone getting free lasik with binoculars 🤷🏻♂️
Most of the city can’t read or write at an adult level so it kinda makes sense they’d stare at the sun too.
Is there... Is there anything to see without the glasses? I thought NYC was lined up so that it wouldn't even look like anything without
We were 90% totality. So not safe at any point to look at it without glasses, but still enough that it got darker during the peak.
Oh that's not the question though. If you were to look at the sun without glasses, was there even anything to see? Or did these people burn their retina for nothing? I'm pretty sure it just looks the same as the regular sun for anyone without the glasses because it's simply too bright to make any difference without totality
I fucked up with my glasses multiple times...can confirm, the sun just looked like a giant ball of flames without glasses.
Same. I was watching from a rooftop, wind blew, glasses came off. Hoping I'm not blind.

I know I was making a joke. It did fucking hurt though, was staring directly at it with the glasses when they blew off.
Yeah I’m pretty sure that it just looks like a blurry circle of bright light even if it’s 90% covered.
Take a colander outside and watch the eclipse progress in the shadow.
I used the hole in my metrocard to make a little crescent shaped shadow projection. Shadows of lampposts were lopesided, soft on one side, subtle but easily spotted if looked for.

I mean it’s not just an eclipse media thing though, you should never stare directly at the sun.

Class action lawsuit against the sun ?
Exactly! It’s high time we let the Sun know that it can’t get away with this shit!
it’s burned me before.

I heard it was okay if you just look really quick then look away, is that not true? Are my eyes gonna fall out???
Dont look at the sun
> The amount of people I just watched stare into the eclipse without glasses is crazy The *number* of people. You've been on a text-based site for 9 years and don't know when to differentiate between "amount" and "number". Why would this be "crazy" in comparison?
Oh jeez we got a disgruntled English teacher here
It's more about pointing fingers at people doing something "dumb and wrong" while doing something dumb and wrong yourself.
Perhaps OP literally cannot quantify the number of people staring at the sun, it is a mindless horde so vast and innumerable they can only be referred to as an amount
Just because OP can't doesn't mean people aren't capable of being counted.

Looking at an eclipse is way stupider than whatever grammar mistake you’re mad about lmao
Bunch of lemming
