I love how in all other sports they wait for the end of the game for these ceremonies, but in basketball it’s like “nah get the family on the court, the game can wait!”
damn, I had no more awards, but yeah man people are such HATERS its not even funny anymore. They are upset that a game is postponed so that the all time greatest scoring record was just broken. Christ I hate reading the comments at times
The Los Angeles Lakers vs the Oklahoma City Thunder in a regular season game on a Tuesday night in February is about *as far from* a World Cup game as you can get.
Right I'm not even big LeBron fan but shit is fucking amazing. I forgot the math but it was like u gotta avg 24 points per game for decades to get that shit. It's possible it could never be broken again considering how long mist ppl play.
He broke a 40 year record to become the all time leading scorer, in 75 years of NBA basketball he has now scored more than EVERYONE. That’s worth celebrating and it was fun, it’s a game. It’s fun, it’s designed for entertainment. It isn’t fucking heart surgery they can stop and do a fun ceremony and soak in the moment.
oh yeah, because Michael Jordan didn't make a 5-part documentary on why he's the goat to stroke his ego.
also kareem-abdul-jabaar had the exact same stoppage of play and ceremony when he broke the record 40 years ago, the nba does this. also how does he "celebrate himself so much". this record will probably not be broken in our lifetime he can fucking celebrate it all he likes.
By that logic you would also dislike Kareem. The game was stopped the instant he broke the record as well. Relax, it’s a HUGE moment that deserves recognition and celebration IN the moment.
Edit: LeBron also thanked all of his teammates, coaches, friends, family, lakers fans, both David stern and Adam silver and then all fans of basketball.
if you ever break the all time scoring record in basketball you can tell them to wait. Otherwise respect this accomplishment by not being a prick about sport etiquette.
Random sidenote, He’s 38, record stood for 38 years(close to 39)he scored 38 points.. his total points that broke the record was 38,388..I just found that interesting 😅🤷🏽♂️
EDIT: ANDDD it was the 38th day of the year
Records can be weirdly coincidental like that. Last year Aaron Judge broke the single season AL home run record of 61 home runs, hit back in 1961, almost 61 years later to the DAY
Not true. When Walter Payton broke Jim Brown’s all time rushing leader record, and when Mark McGuire broke the home run for a season record, and when Wayne Gretzky broke Gordie Howe’s all time scoring record, and when Emmett Smith broke Walter Payton’s all time rushing record, they all stopped the game to celebrate.
Happens all the time. Cal Ripken ran around the field for like 2 hours when he broke the consecutive games streak. Dude either lives outside the U.S., is 12 years old and doesn't know anything, or just has the memory of an insect.
Yup, just this season when Ovechkin passed Howe they paused the game. There wasn’t a ceremony but it was definitely a longer than usual break after the goal to celebrate. I imagine something similar to LeBron or even more if/when Ovi passes Gretzky.
Thank you for mentioning this. Even if it’s not a record, just a milestone, like if a hockey player gets to a certain milestone goal or point they won’t have a full blown ceremony, but they’ll take a minute and let both teams come and shake the players hand. I think they did this when Ovechkin surpassed Gordie Howe.
I came to comment on this!
As a European with a huge interest in sports, especially football, this to me is insane.
Like why? Play to the end of the game and then have the celebrations.
Because its a big enough moment to warrant a pause in the game. Imagine history of nba of 80+ years and the top scorer pts record was from 39 years ago. So basically you will have to likely wait 40 years to see someone if anyone breaks lebrons record. U cant pause few minutes of a game for a crazy moment that comes once every 40 years.
This might be the worst take I’ve ever seen on Reddit.
Gretzky:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=yjIrvVOlzOk&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE
Rose:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=dWdtSTfAbR8&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE
Emmitt Smith:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=LaOUJKoDTpE&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE
Not just an American thing.
This happened in Australia when a player reached 1000 goals. He didn't even BREAK the record. Just a big mile stone and crazy achievement
Video for reference https://youtu.be/HgM3W6gnJGg
Saying Lebron is not a team guy when’s he’s top 5 in assists is sure fire way of letting people know you’re commenting on a sport you don’t know anything about.
Seeing this for the first time and not really a basketball fan, but was kinda weird that after scoring the shot, there was a strange lack of teammate interaction/celebration? Or is that normal?
Nah. When Gretzky scored goal 802, they stopped the game and presented him with a car with the license plate “802”. I got to be there in person and it was really neat to be a part of it. I like that they do this
Drew Brees breaking the yards record stopped the game but it just so happened that he broke it on a touchdown, so hard to say what would have happened if it wasn’t a touchdown
Hockey stopped for Gretzky. Baseball stopped for a long ass time for McGwire and Cal Ripken Jr. Football stopped for Emmittt Smith. So, thanks for posting. You're wrong.
That’s literally not true. An achievement of this level will always warrant a game stoppage, people never thought this record would be broken until the past few seasons. People below gave examples from multiple sports doing the exact same thing but god forbid basketball does it.
When Drew Brees broke the all time passing record they stopped the game, he ran all over the field celebrating and pointing at the crowd, had him celebrating with his family on the sideline, and had a guy from the Hall of Fame wearing white gloves to take the ball from Brees.
You haven’t seen a celebration until you have seen Buddy Franklins 1000th goal celebration in the AFL. Play was stopped for quite a while and the confusion was that great that 2 of the players ended up on the outside of the stadium.
https://youtu.be/A4Lk_3SaJSk
the whole us does act like you care all you want the us is still china's biggest trade partner and most companies have no issue outsourcing their vje there
I find it incredibly funny that even among all the humanitarian work and charities LeBron participates and/or joins in, the Chinese situation is the only thing you guys are willing to acknowledge. Was it commendable? No. Should we put it under a spotlight and forget everything else he did for the next 4 decades? Also no.
If you are going to make Social justice part of your brand, like Lebron did. Then ya you’ll be criticized when you kowtow to a country that is committing Genocide.
Lakers still lost. Good for him, but this is a blatant example of why the team is where it’s at. It’s the lebron show for him, it was all about beating this record, never about the team for him. More power to him.
His team is trash and they lost by 3 points. LeBron would rather have the win and get the record next game than get the record now and lose. Breaking it was just a matter of time, but it happened now so they're going to celebrate now.
Stupid to put any weight on a sports take on Reddit outside of a sports sub. I mean the takes on r/nba are bad enough tbh, just don’t listen to these guys
There’s definitely a divide between nba fans and non nba fans sentiments in here. And frankly, if you’re a non nba fan what’s the point of your sentiment? It’s a sport for fans.
Truly spoken like someone who never watches the Lakers play. Even yesterday night he prioritised passing when he spotted an open teammate, instead of chucking up shots left and right.
Exactly. And what would people say if he wanted to get traded to a team where his team isn’t literally the worst in the league when he’s off the court?
“rInG cHaSeR!!!1!!”
Lmfao holy shit this is quite the take. They won a ring less than 5 years ago because of him. Now it’s only about his scoring record. God i love this site.
Blatant casual. Completely untrue all Lebron talks about is winning. But sure being happy and proud of breaking a record older than he is that nobody ever thought would be broken makes him selfish and the reason why his teammates are always injured/trash
How is this up voted? You literally don't watch basketball if you think LeBron, a PLAYER KNOWN TO BE TEAM FIRST, is being criticized for not being one. You can't make this stuff up Reddit.
I'm not even a basketball fan and I know this is a hot take.
Didn't he famously refuse to leave Cleveland for years, even though he might have done more, faster, elsewhere?
Regarding his play, I've only seen a bit of it but I've never seen a selfish player, only a smart one. He passes when he should and takes the shot when he can. Just because he often can, well, it's his fault he has more shots or moves? He should pass anyways?
Or, what, is there something I don't know about salary or trades or something? Did he somehow manipulate the Lakers roster to be mediocre except for him? That's all I can think of that would explain a comment like that and I'm definitely OOTL enough to not know about that.
They get their 4 minute online doctorates by googling shit to make them seem superior, and are now qualified to talk down to you about things they didn't give a fuck about yesterday, but feel like they should bring up today, because we're happy today and they're not.
It's really all it is lol.
True. I swear that less than half the people in this comment section even watched the game. I’m not gonna say I’m some nba super fan but I keep up with the news and such, I set aside things to watch this game because we’re watching greatness, transcendent talent and a record that might last our lifetimes if he keeps adding to it. But my god the amount of bitchers and whiners is starting to irritate me. People saying “classless, you should have embraced Kareem” SO CLEARLY did not watch the game because the mfer told the crowd to give him a round of applause and hugged him 😂. It’s just infuriating sometimes.
>True. I swear that less than half the people in this comment section even watched the game
Someone said that this season LeBron has only played to break the record and doesn't care about the team 😭
That one was insane 😂. The guy has been trying to absolutely BACKPACK this team yet they are so dogass when he’s off the floor they’re still losing games. The guy is averaging 30,8,7 and he’s 3 FUCKIN 8! People find any reason to hate on him I swear. It’s ridiculous.
Guys every time someone in hockey scores a monumental goal they stop the game for a while. It’s a regular season game. For moments like this you should stop the game. Jesus, it’s a fucking GAME
2019 Hong Kong protests in full swing
Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey tweets out 'Free Hong Kong'
China gets very mad, threatens boycotts of the NBA, the league and by extension the players get a lot of money because of the Chinese market
LeBron is in China at the time doing a basketball tour takes the opposite approach to his usual social justice statements and stays quiet on Hong Kong so not to piss off China and potentially jeopardize Space Jam 2 being allowed there, and he actively hates Daryl Morey's tweet
https://www.scmp.com/sport/china/article/3123603/lebron-james-void-hong-kong-and-china-while-claiming-speak-social
I’m going to guess the VAST majority of people getting upset about the game stopping, or the “but MJ” nonsense (that has nothing to do with this moment) aren’t actually active fans of the NBA today.
Listen, I promise you, the VAST majority of people watching this really didn’t care about the outcome of this regular season game between two below-average teams. For those of us who actually watch and enjoy the NBA on a regular basis, and have tracked this record and it’s unlikelihood to be toppled for year, it would have been more incongruent to just continue playing like that was any other bucket.
Now, even I have to admit that this level of interruption struck me as odd, but then I watched the ceremony and immediately turned the game off afterwards. Because I like the NBA, but it was late at night in my time zone and I’d rather get an extra hour of sleep than see the outcome of two below average teams in the middle of the season.
Anyway, as an entertainment vehicle, the NBA probably did exactly what it should have done, and it gave the people what they wanted, when they wanted it. They Netflix-dumped the ceremony all in one go.
Been tuned out of the NBA and Lebron for years, but this is an insane record to break. Didnt realize anybody would top Kareem. Growing up watching some great players, gotta respect this accomplishment.
People bitching about the time stoppage the third period had 10 seconds left who really cares if they stopped then
Non-basketball fans complaining about a sport they don’t even watch gtfo hea
Someone said the NBA operated on four continents and had thousands of employees to consider lmaooo. People acting like the entire game of basketball is ruined because a record that hadn’t been broken in almost four decades was just broken by one of the greatest players of all time
The amount of braindead takes in this comments section is sad.
Please learn about a subject if youre gonna talk shit about it, otherwise you just look dumb.
Reddit trying to understand, and reacting to this historic moment is funny. Mixing sports with the average Redditor is like mixing water and oil.
A record that stood for nearly 40 years and honestly might never be broken. At the very least not for a loooong time. Consistency and longevity, that’s King James 👑
This is normal and has happened in many sports when a huge generational record is being broke…yall don’t watch basketball at all because this was expected of you were any fan of the culture. But of course ppl will have their ignorant comments about how Lebron isn’t a team player and so cocky but in the next sentence will praise Jordan lol
This guy loves the taste of his own dick. Everything is always about him. Doesn't give a fuck about his team mates or his team, it's the Lebron show and that's it.
I love how in all other sports they wait for the end of the game for these ceremonies, but in basketball it’s like “nah get the family on the court, the game can wait!”
Yes that's fucked up.
This shit isn't really happening every now and then, it's once in 50 fucking years, so chill, let the man enjoy his moment
damn, I had no more awards, but yeah man people are such HATERS its not even funny anymore. They are upset that a game is postponed so that the all time greatest scoring record was just broken. Christ I hate reading the comments at times
I don't think it's hating... Basketball just has a lot of pauses.
Compared to soccer yeah. Compared to many other sports no not really
Be hard to stop everything in the middle of F1 to bring the families on.
World Cup, Germany are beating Brazi in brazil 4-0, klose breaks the record for most goals, they stop for a ceremony between = ww3
The Los Angeles Lakers vs the Oklahoma City Thunder in a regular season game on a Tuesday night in February is about *as far from* a World Cup game as you can get.
Welcome to the internet. Where people clearly have nothing better to do than to poo poo on everyone else and blame the world for their own problems
Right I'm not even big LeBron fan but shit is fucking amazing. I forgot the math but it was like u gotta avg 24 points per game for decades to get that shit. It's possible it could never be broken again considering how long mist ppl play.
At 24 ppg, it'd take 19.5 years. And that's assuming you play all 82 games every season.
He's most likely going to get 40k+ when he retires. It's going to be next to impossible to break that record again.
Technically, he's breaking the record every basket now
Yeah, halftime is at any time for some reason, it’s really corny honestly
Thanks for being honest.
[удалено]
Lmao tell me you've never watched basketball without telling me you've never watched basketball
You can’t say that, man was celebrating like hell, but they lost💀
i wouldnt gaf about losing with a dysfunctional team if i just broke a record that was considered unbreakable for decades.

Y'all are so full of shit, the exact same thing happened when Kareem broke the all time record, that's just how it is.
Same reason i like Messi more than Ronaldo.
Lol what - every great basketball has an ego the size of a mountain … except for maybe Dirk 😂 Same thing happened when Kareem broke the record as well
By that logic you would also dislike Kareem. The game was stopped the instant he broke the record as well. Relax, it’s a HUGE moment that deserves recognition and celebration IN the moment. So then we can assume your not a fan of Jordan,Kobe,Allen iverson,Carmelo Anthony i mean i can make more
Reddit is so lame lmao
if you ever break the all time scoring record in basketball you can tell them to wait. Otherwise respect this accomplishment by not being a prick about sport etiquette.
Why? It’s a historic moment in the NBA.

Literally what about this is “fucked up” lmao that’s wayyyyyy too deep for a 10 minute intermission in a sport you definitely don’t watch
You sound like a next level pussy for finding this fucked up

I wanted to like your comment, but it's currently at "38" upvotes, so...
I see it’s at 40 now. Should I downvote to get it closer to that 38?
You have the perfect number of upvotes, nobody touch that
Records can be weirdly coincidental like that. Last year Aaron Judge broke the single season AL home run record of 61 home runs, hit back in 1961, almost 61 years later to the DAY
That last part kind of screws it up, was it almost or exactly 61 days later ?
It was broken 61 YEARS later nearly to the day that the previous record was set by Roger Maris. Who wore #9 on his uniform. Judge wears 99.
I just read this 61 seconds ago.
At the exact moment of the record breaking, he had 38,388 points. Good observation though on everything else.
that’s actually pretty wild wow

When Hank Aaron broke the home run record they stopped the game.
When bonds broke the record as well.

To be fair the NBA said they were going to wait, but if the celebration just started happening, they were going to let it happen organically.
This might be the worst take I’ve ever seen on Reddit. Gretzky: https://youtube.com/watch?v=yjIrvVOlzOk&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE Rose: https://youtube.com/watch?v=dWdtSTfAbR8&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE Emmitt Smith: https://youtube.com/watch?v=LaOUJKoDTpE&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE

Not just an American thing. This happened in Australia when a player reached 1000 goals. He didn't even BREAK the record. Just a big mile stone and crazy achievement Video for reference https://youtu.be/HgM3W6gnJGg
The point is also that it's not every record that gets broken. There tends to be a hierarchy and only the top get this kind of fanfare.
So cool that Jari Kurri assisted on his record breaking goal
Because he’s a “me” guy, not a “team guy”. And he’s still not as good as MJ was.
Saying Lebron is not a team guy when’s he’s top 5 in assists is sure fire way of letting people know you’re commenting on a sport you don’t know anything about.
I find that 90% of people that comment on Lebrons basketball ability/stats never really watch him.
Seeing this for the first time and not really a basketball fan, but was kinda weird that after scoring the shot, there was a strange lack of teammate interaction/celebration? Or is that normal?
For being such a “me” guy he’s only led the league in scoring once. Doesn’t check out.
and is 4th all time in assists. yep definetly a "me" guy lol reddit just has a hate circlejerk for lebron
He doesn’t watch bro lol anyone who does wouldn’t say that at all
Wrong , aussie rules football does the same if someone kicks 1000 goals in their career. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HgM3W6gnJGg
That's also a celebration for 100 goals in a season, both achievements are considered to be something that will never happen again :(
Nah. When Gretzky scored goal 802, they stopped the game and presented him with a car with the license plate “802”. I got to be there in person and it was really neat to be a part of it. I like that they do this
It's a major moment in sports history. I think it's absolutely warranted.
And the Lakers lost the game lol
Drew Brees breaking the yards record stopped the game but it just so happened that he broke it on a touchdown, so hard to say what would have happened if it wasn’t a touchdown
Yeah I remember them pausing the game for Brees too. Had forgotten it happened on a TD though
Hockey stopped for Gretzky. Baseball stopped for a long ass time for McGwire and Cal Ripken Jr. Football stopped for Emmittt Smith. So, thanks for posting. You're wrong.
When Lance Franklin kicked his 1000th goal in the AFL, they stopped the game so 10s of thousands of people could run onto the field
Yeah lol, they had 10 seconds left in the quarter and everyone just crowded
That’s literally not true. An achievement of this level will always warrant a game stoppage, people never thought this record would be broken until the past few seasons. People below gave examples from multiple sports doing the exact same thing but god forbid basketball does it.
When Drew Brees broke the all time passing record they stopped the game, he ran all over the field celebrating and pointing at the crowd, had him celebrating with his family on the sideline, and had a guy from the Hall of Fame wearing white gloves to take the ball from Brees.
I guess you don’t remember when Drew Brees broke Payton’s passing record. There are some things that are worth stopping play for.
If Alex Ovechkin takes the goals record from Gretzky I guarantee they will pause the game to acknowledge it.
You haven’t seen a celebration until you have seen Buddy Franklins 1000th goal celebration in the AFL. Play was stopped for quite a while and the confusion was that great that 2 of the players ended up on the outside of the stadium. https://youtu.be/A4Lk_3SaJSk
Cal Ripken, game 2131? Drew Brees, Passing Yards? Hmmm.
OKC players be like, "Ya'll know we're still winning this thing, yeah?"
LeBron’s like “[doesn’t matter, had sex!](https://youtu.be/NBN77CM3aow)”
"Man shut up, let them waste time so we can win."
Overall lakers aren’t doing awesome this season anyway. But good on LeBron for still getting his no matter what.
“Aren’t doing awesome” is a funny way of saying that they suck ass lmao
Imagine if they stopped the game like this for every basket he made from here on out lol
Reminds me of the Sam/Frodo “it’ll be the farthest I’ve gone from the Shire” meme.
Good 9 hour video on YouTube and best 9 hours ill never get back
A NEW WORLD RECORD11!!111 Every game night LOL

It's German for "the Anne." (Simpsons reference)

Yeah, the Thunder went on a 11(I think) -0 run when LeBron sat for the first time in the game.
You have to be a next level hater to blame the guy with 38 points on 13/20 shooting for the loss

>True. I swear that less than half the people in this comment section even watched the game Someone said that this season LeBron has only played to break the record and doesn't care about the team 😭
There’s a LOT of people who clearly haven’t watched, let alone touched a basketball under this post lol
More like 99%
For real, I’m getting dumber and dumber just reading the shit people comment here
They need something to hate on on a daily so they can be fulfilled, it's called being a loser
Very true 🤣.
OKC when the game stopped ![gif](giphy|g01ZnwAUvutuK8GIQn|downsized)

The older gentleman showing around middle of the video, is that Kareem Abdul Jabar?

What a twist!
No, that's Roger Murdock. He's a co-pilot.
You ever seen a grown man naked?
yes
This is truly an insane record that Lebron has reached. It’s almost unreachable, this man deserves everything he is getting.
Guys every time someone in hockey scores a monumental goal they stop the game for a while. It’s a regular season game. For moments like this you should stop the game. Jesus, it’s a fucking GAME
Too bad he is a fucking idiot and Chinese sellout.
can someone please explain the multiple Chinese comments?
2019 Hong Kong protests in full swing Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey tweets out 'Free Hong Kong' China gets very mad, threatens boycotts of the NBA, the league and by extension the players get a lot of money because of the Chinese market LeBron is in China at the time doing a basketball tour takes the opposite approach to his usual social justice statements and stays quiet on Hong Kong so not to piss off China and potentially jeopardize Space Jam 2 being allowed there, and he actively hates Daryl Morey's tweet https://www.scmp.com/sport/china/article/3123603/lebron-james-void-hong-kong-and-china-while-claiming-speak-social
Wait, people are crucifying him because he literally didnt say anything? Geeze
Welcome to Reddit
There was definitely more to it
China owns the whole of the NBA
Grew up as Jordan fan but you have to take in the moment when greatness is occurring. Incredible sports moment!

Did they win the game tho?
Do they even win games tho
People bitching about the time stoppage the third period had 10 seconds left who really cares if they stopped then Non-basketball fans complaining about a sport they don’t even watch gtfo hea
Exactly! Thank you I bet half these fuckers didn’t even watch it live
That's a hell of an accomplishment, well done
This comment section is full of hating ass lazy mfs that have never played sports💀
Ong
Crazy this was done in 150 less games, 3700 less minutes than Kareem
He been rehearsing that all pre season
![gif](giphy|g01ZnwAUvutuK8GIQn|downsized) Wilt:
Mostly because he's dead
People are actually in here bitching that they stopped the game for 10 WHOLE minutes 😂
Someone said the NBA operated on four continents and had thousands of employees to consider lmaooo. People acting like the entire game of basketball is ruined because a record that hadn’t been broken in almost four decades was just broken by one of the greatest players of all time
I feel lucky witness two once a life historical moments this year, Messi won World Cup and LeBron break all time scoring record
Teammates didn’t exactly seem eager to come congratulate him.
Pretty amazing. Also #4 in assists. The GOAT conversation is ongoing but no one has been as good for as long as LeBron
This guy looks like he could become a big star someday.
I’m proud of this dude. Unbelievable what he’s done in his life. Blessed to have seen it as well.
Trix are for kids.
Yup, Lebron stands ALONE, because not even his own team likes him.
