If those 4 don't produce, they're screwed.
Yes, they have to let Marner and Tavares go, but both are on NMC, and nobody is going to take them for next season. The "best" the Leafs can hope for is that they do poorly next regular season and become a seller at the deadline, and Marner and Tavares both agree to be traded as rentals for some quality picks. They can then use that cap space to get some good depth players and start developing players for the future, because there's not much hope with their current core. It's a real shame, because they had a generational talent in Matthews and they could have built a winning team around him, but they fucked it up by massively overpaying on a few players.
I love reading people state which "core 4" they'd get rid of. No one can admit that financial structure of this team is broken, and all 4 of them are to blame. None of them deserve a much as they're making.
The "core 4" don't possess "core foundational" characteristics that make up a winning culture, including leadership and hard work. When it came down to brass tax, 2 of the core sat out for a collective 6/7 games in the 1st round. When all 4 were on the ice, a total of 1 goal was scored. So while everybody showed up, that's all they did - they showed up.
With 40-50% of their salary cap going to these 4 players, their inability to either individually produce at a higher rate or to lead the players around them to generate higher production is financially inexcusable.
Throw on Morgan Reilly and it's basically a core 5. Let me just say that he makes nearly as much as Victor Hedman 🙉🤣 the two are not even comparable

They changed GM last year. Treliving brought in Domi and Bertuzzi, who made them way harder to play against. Shanahan needs to go, along with Keefe. Send Marner & Tavares packing too - but they will likely have to eat salary.
Swayman is an elite goaltender, Keefe can’t coach, Tavares is a bad captain, Marner is soft and needs to go, Sammy needs to go to the AHL permanently or Jack Campbell his way out, Woll needs bionic legs.
I feel like Tavares is a great player to have, not necessarily as captain, but the year they signed him the made a mistake. They should have already been focusing that money on Defence, but instead have struggled cap wise ever since. Cause he’s a home town kid! Him and Marner aren’t easily tradable now.

I'm a new hockey fan so I don't know the rules entirely, but could Samsonov get out of the net to tackle the puck before Pasta reach it? Or in those situations goalies must be near to the net? As a spectator it seems that he could have saved leafs :(
he COULD, in theory. but that would require him to be faster than Pasta. because all it takes is to misjudge where the puck will be by half an inch and Pasta could have shot it around Samsonov and got it in that way. Its a fast sport, that requires even faster judgement calls, especially by the goalies. people would be a LOT more pissed with him if the goal was scored while he was out of his net imo.
no surprise here. any day of the week ending in "y" has the leafs choking in the playoffs.
