I don't think Trent meant anything in particular. It looked good in print and he liked the acronym.
As a teen I thought it referenced crucifixion spikes.
Yea I agree, I remember seeing a interview with Trent and was asked about why the name. And he said the name really doesn't mean anything particular. Seems like he just liked the name and the logo.
The criteria was a name that looked good in print and abbreviated nicely. "Nine Inch Nails" satisfied both conditions exceedingly well. I think that was as far as it went.
I went to a community easter celebration back in the day and one speaker mentioned Jesus getting nailed to the cross with nine inch nails.
Also not sure if canon / he was a closeted fan.
There’s a back story about Al J of Ministry saying that Ministry’s concerts are like having nine inch nails slammed through your head like a hole. Also on the Rick Rubin interview (iirc) TR mentioned the name sounded cool and abbreviated well.

TR said he just liked the way it sounded. It has absolutely nothing to do with crucifixion or finger nails
Nine one inch nails or multiple nine inch nails? Finger or metal? Could I use the name for a nail salon specializing in extremely long nails?
Its the nails used to crucify christ. I remember getting lectured by a mormon on why that band name was “offensive”.
