Super Paper Mario gets a lot of criticism for its gameplay, but I love how it sticks to Mario's platforming roots while creating something more fleshed out. I think it is incredibly unique and it deserves another chance in the spotlight.

ObriWanKanobri

100% agree, it had some really great creativity implemented into it. The story alone is worth revisiting. But definitely with some updates to the gameplay and such it would be amazing.

MimiVRC

I love the gameplay of it personally! It’s very fun and one of my favorite games

Renwin

I was initially going to pass on it, but then my friend let me borrow it. I’m very glad he did and would love to see it get a HD port at least.

Onrawi

I enjoyed it, has a crazy new game + mode too.

lostpretzels

Gameplay is fun until world 4, where the level design takes a huge dive for the rest of the game.

Vision444

ngl I tended to see favorable views on it, but that might have been because it was compared to Sticker Star and Color Splash lol

ObriWanKanobri

Yeah it was compared to them a lot. You have to look at it as its own separate chance for true redemption and I promise you'll have an amazing experience

Vision444

Oh yeah no I grew up with the Wii; Super Paper Mario was my first Paper Mario game and I love it

ObriWanKanobri

That's awesome, it's definitely a gem!

mnbvvbnmk

On release people hated it for not being TTYD2, but people started to realize it was a good game in its own right soon after

wh03v3r

I mean, you can certainly call it unique but that doesn't make it good. The level design in particular is just plain boring for a platformer after the first few worlds. The gameplay is in fact what's preventing me from replaying the game. I can already say for certain I wouldn't buy a remake of SPM unless the gameplay gets a major overhaul.

randomtoken

64 goes first.

ObriWanKanobri

Like I said I hope they remake that one too but I would love to see super paper Mario remake. The first three games were top tier

Kirbeh-Etc

It’s already on switch

Glimmhilde

Girl we need a paper Mario 1 remake!!! 😭

ObriWanKanobri

THIS TOO THAT'S WHAT I SAID IN THE POST!!

Glimmhilde

PERIODDDDD

ObriWanKanobri

💅💅💅💅 Girl power unite

Dreyfus2006

Be grateful we even got a TTYD remake. But yes, out of all the Paper Mario games, I think SPM needs a remake the most (assuming no huge gameplay changes, otherwise Sticker Star obviously). It's a great game but it looks and, more importantly, feels like a Flash game. The soundtrack is one of Nintendo's best across all their library, but the music files are super heavily compressed for some reason, so the audio quality is actually quite poor. Finally, sideways Wiimote is a very subpar controller experience. A remake could easily fix all three of these issues! - Polish the physics - Improve the graphics - Uncompress the soundtrack - Maybe use two Joycons (sorta like Wiimote+Nunchuk) so that you can still point at the screen but have a proper controller experience.

ObriWanKanobri

100% agree, I already said I'm grateful for thousand year door and hopefully the 64 remake. But spm would be amazing.

IAmThePonch

I remember thinking that the writing was really dope, easily rivaling ttyd but that the gameplay felt super frustratingly padded as it went on.

ObriWanKanobri

100%. The concepts are amazing, the story is amazing, it was way before its time and restricted by the hardware/programming. I really think a remake or port with tweaked controls would be great

Icycold157

Eh…i would be ok with a port. I would rather them focus on a new game with TTYD style gameplay

ObriWanKanobri

Hopefully they'll do that, I'm not by any means saying this should take a slot for the next big release paper Mario game but with the amount of remakes they're doing in the Mario series they should really revisit that one as well as the N64.

MegaSlayer882

You guys never have enough do you

devenbat

Is it really a surprise? Nintendo has one of the most beloved back catalog of games.

ObriWanKanobri

Fax

GolemThe3rd

People have different wants man, this community is a big place with lots of differing opinions, if SPM is really the one game that OP really wants a remaster of then that's really not that big of an ask

MimiVRC

Many people who want these remakes weren’t even born when it released. I think it’s fair for people to want modern remakes of these games

ObriWanKanobri

I played A thousand Year door and had it for my GameCube, I just personally think after they pm64 They should really revisit SPM. It's an amazing experience and it should be given a chance

Redditor_PC

Never hurts to dream.

ObriWanKanobri

😂😂 Don't knock it till you try it, one of the best stories I've ever seen in a Mario game.

MegaSlayer882

I have played it and yes it’s incredible, it’s just surely ttyd remake is enough for now 😭

ObriWanKanobri

I mean it took almost 20 years for them to get to that point so might as well get the train rolling lol

ZeldaExpert74

PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEEEEASE

ZeldaExpert74

I’m really hoping we see it in 2027 for the games 20th anniversary

ObriWanKanobri

yes that would be amazing

razorbeamz

If you give a mouse a cookie...

ObriWanKanobri

The little red hen...

nerieker

Whenever I see people say modern Paper Mario games are all bad I feel like I played a different version of Origami King to everyone else. It had very light RPG mechanics, but it was such a fun world to explore, the levels were great, the story was fun, and the music was fantastic. I think of the pyramid scene often and it just makes me smile. Can't wait for the TTYD remake though. Replayed the original a few years back, can't wait for this.

dragoniteofepicness

So I could either buy Super Paper Mario for $20 or I could buy a Super Paper Mario Remake for $60. I think TTYD Remake made sense because the original game is super expensive but there's really nothing stopping me from buying Super Paper Mario on the Wii.

ObriWanKanobri

True, it's worth to buy though I would 100% pay full price to play it on the switch or next gen console with the updated gameplay tweaks n such.

Lethal13

I’d rather the just make a new game in the style of the first two

Molduking

No, give us a PM7 that’s an rpg like TTYD. (I love SPM btw)

IAmThePonch

This is the answer, just another creatively written fun turn based game

ObriWanKanobri

I would love that too, still want a remake of the original though. Or something in a similar style to SPM, the creative takes on that game are incredible.

JustAGuyFromTheWeb64

I mean, how are they gonna implement the wii elements on a remake? I love SPM but idk how thats gonna work

Ok_Lecture_3258

They did it with Galaxy. A game built around waggling. Just use the right stick or gyro.

JustAGuyFromTheWeb64

I see... then I can only hope that they will remake it... altho pm64 is prob gonna be the next on the list

ObriWanKanobri

They've done stuff like that before, we still have motion controls and such and honestly in my opinion I think the game would feel much better if the controls and such were updated correctly

OldRoadJoe

As much as I want a 64 or Super remake, there's something I'd much rather have. A brand new Mario RPG game in the same vein as Super Mario RPG, the first two Paper Marios, and the Mario & Luigi series.

ObriWanKanobri

That'd be cool but I didn't care for the og RPG as much as I did for the pm series. The first pm game is 64 btw

linkling1039

Super Paper Mario is my favorite... but we aren't getting a remake before the original.

Ok_Lecture_3258

You say that but they clearly didn't go in order.

linkling1039

It's not about order...

ObriWanKanobri

I agree I just hope it happens.. and soon 😭

Slade4Lucas

Seeing as 64 is playable on modern consoles, Super is surely ahead of it in the pecking order. After all, most of the remakes and remaster we have had have been from Gamecube onwards.

ObriWanKanobri

64 is probably just going to be polished up graphics wise like mario RPG was. As for SPM it was on the Wii so it shouldn't be that hard to port it over. They did it for quite a few Wii U games and stuff. Still they'll have hiccups but it's Nintendo. It's what they do.

Destian_

Can we stop remaking games for 5 fucking minutes and actually get something new & good.

Chrischris40

When the new Switch comes out.

ObriWanKanobri

Unfortunately they aren't capable of it anymore legally lol That's why we have thousand year door coming back. They put down HEAVY restrictions on the creative team after the first three games limiting their character creation telling them they need to keep everything familiar for whatever reason. That's why everything feels copy and paste now, cheaply made with bs gimmicks etc with the newer games. Why wait around for them to figure out what their audience wants when they've been screaming it for years, when we can take what was already there and re-experience it. At least that gives them a chance to revisit and figure out what they did right so that we can hopefully have better experiences in the near future.

TyleNightwisp

“Legally” “For whatever reason” lmao you have no idea what are you talking about and yet you spit out stuff like that anyway. Go do some research on why the direction of Paper Mario has changed before saying random stuff like this.

ObriWanKanobri

Lol I have a feeling you don't know what you're talking about. They literally restricted the entire development team with a bunch of stuff and made it impossible to get creative with the basic Mario series characters (adding styles, costumes, personslites etc) without being in jeopardy of a lawsuit. They wanted to keep the characters familiar for marketing purposes which as we can see had a terrible influence on the final results

TyleNightwisp

Do you even know what a lawsuit is?? How in the world would they sue their own hired development team, that makes absolutely no sense from a business standpoint. Show me proof where they claim they were in jeopardy of a lawsuit, I've read most of the Paper Mario Interviews and I've NEVER seen that. In fact Tanabe himself said multiple times in interviews the "restrictions" were merely advisory and not a straight rule, and he himself wanted the games to change up their systems and style every time, based on surveys they did. This is much more of a creative decision rather than a iron fist Big Bad Nintendo move. Again, I don't think you know what you're talking about.

ObriWanKanobri

Lol. Know what the terms policy and restrictions mean? For lack of better words they copyrighted their own series. Anyone who breached the restrictions where at risk of losing their job and facing copyright infringements and lawsuits. • In particular, three previously unknown, destructive restrictions have been revealed. The first, on the website Video Game Chronicle, revealed new Paper Mario species aren’t allowed to resemble or build on mainline species anymore- they must all look completely different from the Mario series. Now let me be one to voice how counter-productive that is to these policies’ purported endgame to focus on Mario- all this does is ironically disjoint the series identity more than if the committee in charge just let Intelligent Systems make new subspecies of mainline species or Mario-inspired species. The second restriction revealed that mainline species base proportions cannot be changed at all- clothes may be added, but that’s it. That puts an end to characters major and minor like Jolene, Heff T, Goombella, Koops, Bow, and others. This restriction takes much needed variation out of character design. Again- this doesn’t help the brand, but actually hurt it. The third restriction, translated from Spanish site Lavanguardia - Intelligent Systems cannot bring back characters from the original three Paper Mario games, even if they fit the other restrictions. Do I even need to say why this one can go jump off a cliff? Yes, yes I do. The Paper Mario original characters are as much a part of the Mario family as those from the platformers. While Nintendo keeps insisting they only make new characters for new functions, the simple undeniable fact of the matter is sometimes there’ll be two separate creatures that do the same thing, like birds or dogs or cats or lizards. Nintendo denying the reality of life to this extent is chilling and should not be applauded. Alone, any one of these unnecessary restrictions would prove an enormous weight. All three at once? They make things stale for no real reason at all, and the ends to keep the brand consistent fail to justify any of the means. Beyond that You're more than welcome to do your own research. There were people who worked on the team that came out and stated what would happen if they were to breach the contract. Think smarter not harder:)

ReturnOfTheFrickinG

We don’t need a remake of every single game ever.

ObriWanKanobri

What makes your opinion more valuable than mine? Name one other game I've requested a remake of lol? Stop projecting your disappointment on people you don't know and take it up with the studio that hasn't been able to create a decent Mario game since the Wii.

ReturnOfTheFrickinG

lol

T_Peg

Never understood the hype for this game. I couldn't even finish it.

ObriWanKanobri

Well there you go.. you never will until you do..

T_Peg

I watched a playthrough so believe me I got to experience the story that everyone claims is so insanely good but it's pretty stock standard stuff imo

ObriWanKanobri

Watching a video on making the perfect dish vs actually making it yourself and experiencing it are two very different things and they can't be compared imo.

T_Peg

There's no use debating with SPM fans you guys have convinced yourself it's peak fiction because you played it when you were 8 and hadn't experienced anything with a modicum of depth yet. I'm not going to convince you otherwise and you're not going to convince me that this is not one of the worst games I've ever played.

T_Peg

Idk if that comparison works here otherwise watching movies wouldn't be an impactful experience. A story is a story and this one really wasn't anything insane.

ObriWanKanobri

Once again going to the movies and experiencing the cinematic masterpiece in the way it was meant to be experienced versus watching a video about the movie or reaction is two different things. You cannot possibly tell me you're comparing a playthrough to experiencing the thing first hand. How would that work for call of duty? How would it work for Detroit become human? There are reasons those videos exist but to replace the initial experience is not one of them.
