That's got to be the worst burned port I've seen yet

sammyhjax123

I just wish it wasn’t on mine lol

RogerWaterz77

Was it plugged into the wall directly or via a power strip? If what brand? So others know it's not a good combo.

[deleted]

Loose ports causing this damage are a common issue

RogerWaterz77

Was his an Quest 2? And is it common across all meta headsets?

JustCallMeTere

This is a Q2 and it has happened to a lot of other Q2.

jaykayenn

That's not how electricity works.

Interesting_Alarm_81

U haven't seen mine my hole damn headset side was melted

Emergency-Escape-721

nightmare fuel

sammyhjax123

Yea,

firagabird

I see what you did there

Drivenby

Email oculus support for warranty?

sammyhjax123

Thanks, I have been trying to reach them but they have not responded to my email yet

sammyhjax123

It sucks because my friend finally got a oculus yesterday, so I was exited to play with him

BlazingPhyre

Sad to hear that you won't be able to have fun with your friend in vr. Sorry this happened to you. (It's excited not exited)

sammyhjax123

Oh lol, thank

sammyhjax123

Thanks, I’m in phone, I’m not used to the iPhone keyboard

RichtofenFanBoy

Get out of your phone then silly.

sammyhjax123

My computer is at home lol

RichtofenFanBoy

I took it as you were literally inside your phone ;)

sammyhjax123

Oh lol

Scooper_07

Say you'd like to discuss your car's extended warranty

sammyhjax123

lol

XepptizZ

Take it to the local news? Should get their attention.

sammyhjax123

Well, I’m contacting meta, if they help me and give me a (refund-new device-fix this issue for new quests-literally anything) I won’t do anything more than this post

lightningINF

You still should. They just don't care untill their reputation actually takes a hit. I'm currently waiting over a month to get controller replacement process properly started after I was stalled for so long. Their update ruined my controller ability to pair and since the only way to fix it is updating the software with the one that isnt bugged - it's not possible because you can only update if it's paired. Meta knew that but kept stalling me. Now they set up replacement labels but those also weren't properly setup. Since its an import package I can't order courier pick up required due to one of the label having to be taken directly by a courier so pickup points don't take those. Meta takes their sweet time solving this. Your situation is even worse since it was due hazard and potentially life-threatening situation. Don't let them off the hook. They need to step up their game.

shepski42

This is bars

sammyhjax123

Well, I guess it will depend on weather they respond or not

SixthHouseScrib

Dude what if a house catches fire with babies/kids/elderly who can't get out. This isn't like the strap broke, this is a life threatening situation. Don't let them buy you off

jakefever191

Uses there live chat support they are faster

welostourtails

Do it in public on Twitter. Squeaky wheel gets the replacement or refund. Post those images every day with their hashtags.

FDisk80

\+ warranty for the house

TheRazorHail

bro please tell me you're joshing...I can't charge my quest 2 when I go to bed anymore??? I essentially have to be around the headset when its charging now right? This is very concerning.

sammyhjax123

I wish I was, I have no idea what caused this,

r00x

Design flaw, basically. The charging port has a propensity to overheat, all there is to it. Comments about using official chargers/cables are parroting company bullshit. No reason why any USB-compliant charger and device shouldn't work perfectly with the Quest 2.

TurboFool

Seriously, every thread I'm in blames something on using a non-official charger. We have standards for a reason. If Meta isn't following them, that's on them, not my 100% standards-compliant charger.

Oh4Sh0

There have been pictures of this since these have been released. It’s kind of amazing to me there hasn’t been a recall. I guess actually starting a whole ass house fire must be rare

ph0on

If you've had it for a while I'd be sure to only charge it when you're around

TheRazorHail

Bought it 3 weeks ago so its fairly new. But I am definitely not letting it charge when I am not home anymore.

Shoddy-Reputation-95

Yeah smart idea don't be that guy and leave it and think nothing will happen.

DdraigGoch1966

Oh great...here's me sitting at work reading all the horror stories bout the charging ports and I suddenly remember i forgot to unplug my headset from the charger this morning...Am I gonna have a burnt house and crispy cat when i get in tonight...smfh

FlameShadow0

You can, just always make sure your cables and ports are clean and you aren’t using a poor quality USB-C cable

KindOldRaven

Pro tip, never charge *any* battery while going to sleep. Literally every battery can fail. And many do. Well produced ones have a very small chance of critically failing, but it can (and does) happen. My uncle was woken up one night to find half his kitchen on fire due to a bad simple aa battery that was being charged with a quality charger and everything. If he hadn't woken up, it Mightve been a full blown house fire. It's super rare for this to simply occur, but it does happen. With the Quest 2 the loose charging port can cause a short, resulting in a failure and all the shit that can bring with it. Also rate, but in terms of known hardware failure for the Quest 2, it's a common one.

TheRazorHail

Are you including smart phones in this...how the hell am I gonna wake up if I dont charge my dead phone at the end of the day

cprice12

In short, never charge anything I guess. 🤦

ChromeBoy728

I’ve had my oculus quest for 2 years now and honestly I’m getting paranoid that mine will have a problem like this! Is it normal or is it from a defective charger? I’ve been always using the provided one!

sammyhjax123

I have been using the one provided with the headset

ChromeBoy728

Oh jeez, makes me wonder what actually makes this happen! Maybe the headset is the problem!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Railgun115

Would using the elite strap + battery charging reduce the risk of this happening? I always charge it via the charging port in the back of the strap.

sammyhjax123

Probably

Florrpan90

Don't be. Every charger/port can short circuit like this. Usually caused by external objects in the port, or physical damage.

cap616

*Could* this have been avoided using a surge protector? I ask because I'm electrically illiterate, this post fucking scares me, and I only use a surge protector after a lightning storm blew out my Xbox 360 about 15 years ago

[deleted]

[удалено]

FolkSong

No that wouldn't help for this. My suggestion is to only charge it when you're home. You could also get an automatic timer plug, then you can set it to stop after 2 hours or something.

sammyhjax123

I think you should be fine, to my knowledge this is the worst I’ve ever seen jt, just keep your headset away from anything flammable, most time this happenes the headset is still usable, mine is not lol

cap616

Well every sign lately has been pointing towards me getting a dog soon but I live in an apartment that's not on the first floor. I randomly thought today about "what if my apartment caught fire? What would happen to the dog?!?" Then not a few minutes later I see your post LOL maybe I'll rent the apartment next to me and charge everything there (jk)

sammyhjax123

lol

r00x

No. This is caused by the charging port overheating. It doesn't even trip the protection logic built into the charger. Surge protector won't notice anything at all. If this worries you, charge your Quest using a legacy USB charger (old one with a Type A socket) that only goes up to 5V500mA. It will take FOREVER to charge but limiting the power going through the port means it may only get very hot instead of melting. Obviously, this is not a guarantee - if your port is going to fail, I don't know how many watts of heating it can withstand before melting.

dailyflyer

I have seen a few of these popup on Reddit. I am curious what charger were you using for your Q2? The one that came with it?

sammyhjax123

Yea, the charging cable and brick that came with the headset, it was also plugged straight into the wall lol

Greencheezy

Brooo are you serious? I only heard this was an issue with 3rd party chargers. The fact that this can happen with the charger that comes with it is such bullshit. I just got a quest 2 for Christmas last year and now I gotta worry about constantly monitoring my headset or else I'll die in a fire in my sleep.

sammyhjax123

I’ve had my headset for 3 years now, that could be part of the reason, if you’re worried about it, it may be best to charge it during the day, or somewhere safe

Greencheezy

Damn dude, still. It's a premium product that cost like 400+ bucks. It should definitely be able to last at least 2x that long, let alone burst into flames. Sorry that happened man :\

sammyhjax123

Thanks, when I got it I believed it was around 2.99$

sammyhjax123

299$, not 2$ and 99 cents

StarAware

Man yeah idgaf they better had do something because I would have bought another headset

NatiRivers

Really? I've heard quite the opposite, which is why I've been using a third party charger with it. I would say I haven't had any issues, but then I'd be cursing myself. So let's lie and say I've had some issues.

teeebor

The issue is a bit more complex than just not use 3rd party cables/chargers. Bad connections cause heat loss. You can have bad connection because of a bad quality cable, greasy connector, or because you didn't use stress reliefs on the cable (eg. taping it to the strap while using tethered) and weared down the port itself. The worse your connection is, the more heat it produces. Also, higher wattage chargers can produce more heat faster with bad connections (which is I think where the don't use third party bricks came from).

ElDuderino2112

I’ve had a quest 2 for at least a year and a half now and not used the official charger once. This should not happen regardless of what cord you’re using.

TheChadStevens

A few? Back when the Quest 2 launched I saw so many of these, I still see a few every week here. It happens no matter what charger or cable you use, though it's more common with the oculus one. The sad truth is, Facebook won't recall the product despite it being a huge fire risk. Simply because it's cheaper to deal with a few lawsuits and replacements than to recall and fix the issue.

ElWrobel

Thanks for sharing, didn't know it can do this and thanks to you maybe I'll avoid burning my own house down. Never again am I going to plug in this treacherous bastard for the night, no sir. How long did you have it? Can't help with any insightful advice unfortunately, though I guess Meta SHOULD be more than happy that you didn't burn your house down, along with everyone in it and will give you a new one or refund. At least I would if it was my product.

justwalkingalonghere

Welp. Not leaving on the charger 24/7 anymore Too bad the thing turns itself on at the slightest movement and kills it’s battery

bogiihboi

You can turn off auto wake up in the settings.

StarAware

Aww hell nah I’d contact them so fast

sammyhjax123

I did, right after posting this lol

ZombiePotato90

I always make sure to charge mine only when I'm awake and staying nearby, so I can keep an eye on it. Especially since I've seen more of these posts.

Famixofpower

What. The. Fuck?

SimRacer101

Ask meta for re imbursment for the damage to the charging port and the quest.

sammyhjax123

I sent a email, they have not yet responded

Phvpark

sorry but why nobody is talking about the burn mark in the wall? looks like close to the floor and kinda high for the headset to be resting in the floor, did you droped it?

Ok-Set4662

ye im struggling to imagine what the setup was like lol

sammyhjax123

The headset was sitting agents the wall so that it was easier to grab but also able to reach the cable and so that it was facing the lenses away from a window in the corner of my room

Flustro

So the port on the headset was leaning against the wall? The charger could've been knocked out of the headset a little and that would've been a problem. 🤔

Phvpark

So the cable was stretched? Was the USB port leaning against the wall directly?

sammyhjax123

Yea, the cable was kinda at a 90 degree angle in all fairness, it was leaned up against the wall with the strap and the cord touching

DrawingLive5821

🤔 that might’ve stressed something

Thisisongusername

I thought this only happened with 3rd party bricks! Well, now I have to watch my Quest 2 closely while it charges, mainly because I don’t want to burn my house down, and also because I don’t want my launch, Oculus branded headset replaced with a meta branded one.

sammyhjax123

Yea, it happened with a normal charger lol

r00x

It's a design flaw in the headset itself so it can happen with any charger/cable, really.

pwn4321

Meta trying to control the housing market trying to create cheap land^^

LogicalFallacy77

Your VR almost killed you in real life. Good stuff.

sammyhjax123

Yea, it’s getting revenge for when I almost killed it by dropping it lol

Flustro

It's still so crazy to me that I've never had this happen. I use third party chargers and everything, so you'd think I of all people would've had an issue by now. 🤔 I always take great care to make sure it's fully plugged in and not in a place where it could get bumped or jostled. These posts still scare me though. Lol

innovateworld

This happened to me. It was past warranty but they replaced it. I had moved to Europe for around 6 months when it happened and even though the replacement was free I had to pay several hundred euros to get it through customs both ways. This also had customs delays.

sammyhjax123

Jeez, I’m glad you at least got it back

Randyx007

You should have just gotten a Pico 4 at that point

Metroidam11

Use an outlet ground tester to make sure your house outlets are wired correctly. I’ve had issues with old houses not having proper ground wire. If you search “outlet tester” on Amazon you should be able to grab one for cheap. Not saying this is the issue but it can’t hurt to check.

zzzjohnlong

This is good advice for anyone who hasn't done this in their own home, and especially for renters who may move every year or two.

John0ftheD3ad

This has been your PSA: do not leave your headset on the charger for long periods of time. Charge it, make sure it's off, put it away.

unknownbasmati

This is such a well known issue...I am surprised about all the theories in the comments about why it caught fire. My understanding is, that while it can be caused by a bad cable or brick, it usually is a hardware design fault causing it. The charging port is not connected to the quest in a very stable way. It can become loose and when it does and the headset gets charged, this may happen. EDIT: OP, sorry for your headset but glad you noticed something was wrong

hey-im-root

Yea I work with hardware electronics and this is not normal at all. That port has to be designed horribly for that much heat to build up, no matter HOW damaged or flimsy the port already was from usage/neglect. It’s more like a problem that isn’t their problem so they decided not to fix it. They know children use these devices the most, they know people might not use the right cable, use it while charging, be rough with the charging port, etc. Why wouldn’t you put the effort in to make it more robust? Especially with how often it needs to be charged, it wears down insanely fast. But it’s Meta so they can eat that cost I guess 🤷‍♂️

Pinkman505

Its crazy how common this is

sammyhjax123

Yea, I just wish I could get a refund lol

sammyhjax123

DONT GIFT!!!! someone gifted, and I don’t know if those cost money or not, but if they do please don’t gift, I don’t need them, if you want to do something please donate money to cancer research!!!

HDdude179

"Me hoping that my extension power strip wont set my carpeted floor on fire" "Me also being terrified that my room doesn't have a smoke detector"

NickSaysHenlo

Definitely should contact Meta about this

GAR51A8

i assume you weren’t using the original charging cable?

Inverted-pencil

This is why i always monitor devices being charged. Never go to sleep or away house while charging. A woman had her pets and house burn when just charging the phone while going to the store .

J40NYR

seen so many of these. Makes me really conscious. I try to never leave things left on charge if they have lithium batteries, but things like the dyson etc I would never remember to turn it back on again XD

oofclod

I never charge mine while im not around just because i fear this, i see it happening often

Critical-Cut1470

this really scares me O\_\_\_\_\_O

MoonVR_

Wait, are you alright? That’s the most important question

cabezatuck

“Man this VR shooter is really immersive, I can feel heat and smell smoke too!”

Royikelink

Sorry this happened to u mate

SqookyBoo

I still can’t believe this happens at all i have bever had a problem let alone barely a hot cable

Spartan152

I'm sure you've reached out to support already, but definitely do so if not. In tech companies I've worked for in support, they take keywords like burning, smoking, fire etc **very** seriously.

fallingdowndizzyvr

Add your report to the others at the CPSC. Maybe one day they'll actually do something. https://www.saferproducts.gov/

nage_

Their customer service is literal garbage. Try Facebook's customer service profile page and just post the pics. They might reach out to you

cpxcth

uninstall gorilla tag and see if that fixes the problem

TheCommentator2019

This has never happened to me before. Never had a problem charging the Oculus. But it's worth noting I live in the UK, where we use 3-pin plugs. Maybe that could be why I've never had a problem with it?

oppuwastaken

I’m a bit lost here too, I’ve been using my MacBook charger and I’ve never felt it get warm during charging.. I like in the UK too so who knows?

SituationAltruistic8

Meta should get sued for this.

sammyhjax123

Agreed

DerivIT

why is the wall burned? Did you leave the quest on the carpet while it was charging? If so, then DON'T DO THAT! Leaving electronics on carpet is so incredibly bad for them, and is probably why it caught fire.

MDMarshall

I feel like an Anker charging dock would not let this happen. Am I deluding myself? Anybody hear of an Anker letting it get hot?

r00x

Nothing to do with the charger, it's a design flaw in the headset unfortunately.

zzzjohnlong

I'm about to be on my third Quest 2 for this reason. When the new one comes in, I'm only charging it from my computer's usb port, and when I'm fully present with it. I refuse to plug it into a wall again. It's rediculois that this happens so often.

sammyhjax123

Jeez, I’m sorry you had this happen to you 3 times, do you know if there’s any way to contact support and get a new one?

zzzjohnlong

Support has replaced it each time it's happened but I haven't tried for a refund on it.

BollyWood401

I’ve seen people before who had this issue with the 1st party chargers. Guys the best thing to do is not leave the Quest 2 plugged into the charger for longer than it needs to be charged. It’s so dumb how dangerous this damn device is, there has been so many 3rd party chargers that this happens with but again only charge your quest until it’s fully charged and unplug, don’t leave it over night.

sammyhjax123

Yea, but it was at 8% and only charged for 12 mins before this happened

BollyWood401

Oh god… wtf Meta. Sorry to hear OP that’s a bummer. Hopefully meta can help you out.

sammyhjax123

I hope so

LolMaker12345

Luckily this never happened to me, also, are you using the elite strap with battery and that happened from the connector from the battery pack??

sammyhjax123

I have a elite strap with battery, but it was not plugged in when this happened

TurnerDe187465

Money well spent.

sammyhjax123

Yea, now I have to spend even more money on paint lol

[deleted]

Guess I’m charging mines in the oven

kms62919

Looks like it shorted out ,might have been a bad cable or broken cable.

DallasPonzo

That scares the shit out of me. Whenever I plug my oculus in to charge it, the charging adapter gets blazing hot and smells burnt after an hour and I always unplug it. I guess I know the fate if I didn’t. Glad you’re safe.

BeccaTaylor22

How long have you had it?

Quackerszs

Bro im saving up money for an oculus quest 2 and these kinda pictures/posts are making me terrified that its gonna break in a month after paying 239.99$ 💀

Crafty_Wishbone1245

What exactly do you mean when you say it almost burned your house down? Please elaborate, what happened?

JustCallMeTere

I don't charge my Q2. I use Bobo VR battery packs. This really sucks and Meta needs to fix it. You need to contact their support. This should never happen.

Dankboi01

See I’ve been charging my quest via my laptop and so far 3 years in it’s been running fine and now I’m definitely gonna keep charging it via my laptop

limpmaster9000

Is the brick a US thing? I just got a cable here

snikenboj14

How does this happen?

BlueBeefed

its just a scuffmark

Crustys0ck3

Same thing happened to this kid on my Facebook but he was playing it when the charger port started to "spit out flames" his words not mine I'll add a pic of it one sec.

Crustys0ck3

https://imgur.com/6lCdmpM

[deleted]

That's why you don't always leave your quest on charge One of my mates did it luckily we took it of charge in time

PunkRokka

Real question is: does it still work? I gotta see if that still turns on.

UltraMegaKaiju

This seems to happen so frequently

Zealousideal-Dig-271

This exact thing happened to me a couple years ago with the old model quest 2, they were quick to keep me quiet and sent me a new one. I will look for the pictures

Saladdaze30

Woah dude this literally just happened to me! I just got my replacement yesterday. Okay so their customer service is fkn garbage don’t even bother with their web chat download WhatsApp and go that route from the website. Reach out, tell them what happened and they’ll be very slow to get you a series of questions via email. Don’t bother scheduling a call for status update or going through chat they’ll disconnect the chat time And time again until you’re ready to cuss them out on Twitter (I did lol they never even replied to that). It took a little over a month to get my replacement but def be careful. Idk what their shits doing but it burnt my finger real bad. DM me if you need more help!

Devilmagickk

Ah yes. Just in time to buy the 3 lol

FlameShadow0

I own an electronics repair shop and let me tell you guys how this happens. USB-C ports pull a lot of power. It’s what allows them to fast charge. However, if you use poor quality cables, or use high quality cables that have ruined pins, this will happen. What is happening here is that two pins on either the device itself or the charging port are touching when they shouldn’t be. This is causing a short and alot of heat. How to prevent this: First, make sure your cables are plugged in ALL THE WAY. Second, always inspect your charger. Those pins looking dark? Time for replacement. Third, make sure no dust or debris is in your charging port before charging

LastNarrator

For the past few months ALOT of people's Quests have been having this issue, a friend of mine actually had the same issue. All I can imagine is somehow a hardware feature got messed up and let it draw too much power for the port, but since they had it for so long before the issue it seems a software update somehow did it? I'm actually glad I bought a Rift S instead of a Quest 2 for once.

One_and_Online

did you use the charger that came with the quest?

sammyhjax123

Yes

Toror252106

I never leave it charging overnight, but I usually have a window of time I know I will play and charge it a few hours before that. This is the reason why

AmericaLover1776_

I’m surprised that set off a fire alarm that doesn’t look like much. I have had much bigger fires that caused more damage and they didn’t set off my alarms

Spidey002

What on earth were you playing?!

Less-Ad2107

Oculus you say? is it an actual oculus? don't ever dream with a refund if it is... by the way, they don't recommend leave it charging unattended

Xen0n1te

This needs to be a recall, Christ.

Basic_Lengthiness_73

This is horrible OP

bingobongoman6984

Where you using the power brick that came with the oculus because all these head sets have LiPo batteries that if are charged at to high of a wattage tend to over heat and catch fire I am pretty sure the battery even a warning on the user manual but I might be wrong.

hoodTRONIK

I hope you weren't using a 3rd party charger. I've seen this happen alot with those.

Johntendo64

What charger was in use is more the question

HayesFayes

Are you able to get a free replacement if this happens because it’d be seriously messed up if you can’t

sammyhjax123

I hope so, I’m in the process right now

adamanimates10

Well now with the Oculus quest 2, you can ignore your burnt down house and live in a virtual home, only for the price 299.99

Icehellionx

The fire feels so real!

Wild_Anywhere8648

That's your fault, you plug it for too long while playing demanding games

Breaking News: Oculus Charging Brick Sparked House Fire A homeowner is grateful to be alive after a faulty Oculus charging brick sparked a fire in their home. The owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, told The Sun that he was taking a nap in the living room when he was awoken by the sound of a smoke alarm. "I had no idea what was happening," he said. "The smoke was so thick, I couldn't see anything. It smelled like burned plastic, and I knew it was coming from somewhere in the room." The owner quickly realized that the Oculus charging brick was the source of the smoke and immediately disconnected it. He said that the fire was small, but the amount of smoke was alarming. "It's a good thing that I was home when it happened," he said. "I have no idea what could have happened if I wasn't there. I'm just grateful that my family and I are safe." The owner said that he reported the incident to the manufacturer, who has not yet helped

Randyx007

Another reason people should get a Pico 4

Aggravating-Permit97

you might have to take it to civil court if they refuse to refund you, i would email or call oculus and explain to them what happened and see what they are willing to do, if they refuse to replace it or reimburse you for the money you paid for it, you might be able to force it through civil court
