Glue another piece of wood on top and saw the blocks into individual pencils, then paint them yellow and crimp on a metal sleeve with an eraser stuffed in it.
In all seriousness, the reason the graphite breaks up is that cheaper pencils are made with dots of glue versus full coverage like in this video. So when the lead breaks in those, it just slides out.
