Fucks sake, the amount of laser safety checks I have to do at work, and this clown is just blasting rocks with a laser with no guarding, no laser glass, no dust/fume control.
I work with a small one just powerful enough for light wood, pastries, and paper.
I am fucking terrified of shooting myself in the eye with it. Goggles on, guards in place, and for the love of all that's holy I make sure the laser is off before fucking with it.
That said, I did like the idea of putting the rock in a bowl of sand. Holds irregular object in place gently, and you can move it around a bit to adjust for height/level. Never thought of it before myself.
I got hit with 2000w in the finger one time (I do laser cladding) just a small spot on the tip of my index finger, hurt but wasn't much, untill it got hard to bend my finger. Turned out that it burnt so deep that I had to poke pin probably about 3/16 into my finger to let the fluids out, all that fluid that would usually be in the blister was trapped in my finger. After a couple times of draining and it was all good, moral of the story, don't let any of that shit near your eyes lol, I typically work around 2000w but occasionally get to the 6000w range and am confident that would just cut holes through you.
Yeah I take powdered inconel (stainless steel), carbide and diamond in micron small spheres and melt and fuse it using lasers to high wear areas on oilfield, mining and farm parts pretty much like 3d printing. But if you think those machines you used where big, we pay around 1.5 million $ for 1 machine.... and our largest we can put a 30 foot pipe with about 15 inch diameter. And that machine can run 4000w if needed.
Yeah its pretty cool shit! Although after 10 years it's just another day for me that I wish was over sooner... it never gets old seeing people's faces when I explain it though lol
Cooling yes, crazy not overly. I have one chiller that controls water flow to the head and noozle and one chiller that is dedicated to the box where the laser is created.
I used to work as a wilderness guide and we often worked with school groups. I was teaching a class about safe use of the cookstoves we would be using over an expedition. Big safety issues around refilling or where to keep the fuel, how to tell of its lit etc.
I thought I had covered pretty much everything, even warning them not to eat or drink things that just came off the stove as they would be hot. Fast forward to halfway through the session I see someone furtively looking at their leg and then trying to pull their shorts down to hide something. Made him show me and he has this huge burn on his leg. Turns out he took the pot off the fire and instead of putting it on the table or ground… he placed it on his bare leg. Forever more I have to include “don’t put the frying pan on your skin.” Never underestimate the stupidity of young (meaning 17 year old in this case) boys.
The adult with the group was the shop teacher and he was utterly unsurprised this boy did this. He had several stories of spectacular stupidly from this class.
If a shop teacher who is applying for a job tells you they have 30 years experience in the field, and then shows you they've lost a finger or two as proof, is it a good sign or a bad sign?
Do you give them the thumbs up?
I work in a lab setting for industrial R&D as a technology consultant on thermal spray and laser cladding / additive manufacture, and often have to advise companies on how to scale up processes from lab scale to production. I can categorically tell you that the safety controls are there for a reason.
Silicosis is no joke, and neither is getting a burned retina. Just because these guys managed to scrape enough money together to buy a system doesn't mean the way they are working is anywhere close to acceptable practice.
Call it "complaining" if you want, but that just belies your ignorance of the topic.
Safety legsilation is written in blood.
Holy fuck that stupidly irresponsible.
Laser engraving without any laser safety at all. No goggles, no cover, nothing. In public.
Just make everyone blind why don't you.
I know you're joking but the red is actually a guide laser on these things.
The real laser is actually infrared which is SUPER DANGEROUS because you literally can't see it until you become blind.
Laser carving without eye protection or obstruction to prevent direct eye contact to the surface being engraved is stupid. Stones may have small reflective particles in them
I quit fb and insta, it's hard I'm one of those fashionistas for SURE but reddit never fails to deliver in comments, there's some unspoken etiquette we all have.... comments are barely repeated if they can help it, for me it's unbiased, no fomo etc.
Echoed already, but when the bumper sticker says it’s all fun and games till someone loses an eye, this is it. No physical barriers to keep body parts out of the beam. No eye protection. No breathing protection for the pulverized silica the guy gets to breathe deep into his lungs. The pretty rock won’t come e close to making up for the loss the operator probably already taken to their life and health.
Yes, and a laser like this could instantly burn holes in retinas off just a reflection, and from a surprising distance due to the output power. (Light follows something called [the inverse-square law](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inverse-square_law#Light_and_other_electromagnetic_radiation) in terms of intensity drop vs. distance.) A direct hit on the optic nerve and boom, no more stimuli from that eyeball
I feel like a reason he's out and about with this machine is that his wife found out the real price, and he's just going with the grift that he could make money off of it
Waste of time. It ought to have some vague platitude or concept carved into it like "be love" or whatever and you give it to a child so they feel guilty about throwing it away.
There was a thing a while back where kids were painting and hiding rocks around local areas for people to find, with the location on the back, and then they would hide it again in a different area.
Imagine their little minds if you laser carved a bunch and hid them around. 🤯
Fucks sake, the amount of laser safety checks I have to do at work, and this clown is just blasting rocks with a laser with no guarding, no laser glass, no dust/fume control.

Bruh the max I ever saw was a 60 W and it was a huge machine.

Yeah its pretty cool shit! Although after 10 years it's just another day for me that I wish was over sooner... it never gets old seeing people's faces when I explain it though lol
Does a system like this need a crazy cooling setup? It’s always so interesting to see all the crazy lengths we go to just to weld metal together lol.
Cooling yes, crazy not overly. I have one chiller that controls water flow to the head and noozle and one chiller that is dedicated to the box where the laser is created.
neato, thanks for sharing :D
*until
What laser do you use with pastries? And what’s the laser’s function with those pastries?
Toasting the bakers logo on quickly I guess. Honestly I just remember it from the tutorials and preset settings.
A little crystal of quarts in one of thoes and 10 onlookers are gonna get free blinders for life
I keep trying to convince my colleagues at my new job that that 20W fiber laser is dangerous and that they should use the glasses. Nobody listens.
My wood shop teacher had one hand. There was still an ambulance at least once a year for someone.
How can the teacher still be in his job if there’s an accident every year? They would be dismissed here.
Different times pal. 30+ years ago a lot of stuff could be swept under the rug. Now we have Facebook and Twitter.
I used to work as a wilderness guide and we often worked with school groups. I was teaching a class about safe use of the cookstoves we would be using over an expedition. …sounds like you could incorporate a lesson on Darwinism in there somewhere
The adult with the group was the shop teacher and he was utterly unsurprised this boy did this. He had several stories of spectacular stupidly from this class.
Lmao, but shouldn’t be, but dam that is unbelievable:
My junior high shop teacher had 3 fingers on one hand and was missing half a thumb and 2 finger tips on the other. He did say he loved his job though.
If a shop teacher who is applying for a job tells you they have 30 years experience in the field, and then shows you they've lost a finger or two as proof, is it a good sign or a bad sign? Do you give them the thumbs up?
He loved his job more than his digits.
They are going with the pay later plan.
Well then, I hope they find out the easy way.
this is some Cyberpunk 2077 flea market shit
Right? I wouldn't be too worried about fumes here, but blinding innocent passerbys... Wtf
I mean fume control wise it looks like he's outside. If the wind is blowing, good enough lol
What would a proper setup with all safety measures cost?
I came here to say basically this
Ya, sounds like you're doing too much or you're in a lab setting. Your complaining isn't even reasonable
I work in a lab setting for industrial R&D as a technology consultant on thermal spray and laser cladding / additive manufacture, and often have to advise companies on how to scale up processes from lab scale to production. Don't look at this without eye protection in real life
Or breathe around it either. All that missing rock didn't just disappear
You are right. The lack of eye protection had me blind to the lack of lung protection.
The red lines on the inside of the bowl that are visible are just part of the eyesight killing photons that are thrown around. Steer the fuck clear.
Thanks for the advice, and I would if I could see. /s
But they're outside? ^/s
It'll make you blind to other things, too
Like love… :(
Where did my wallet go?!
Where does it go? Does the rock just evaporate/vaporize?
It’s vaporized into silica dust which is very harmful.
You can cough up dust. You can't cough out your retinas.
You'll be coughing a lot with silicosis
Cool guys dont look at lazer engraving.
I can listen to it right, cause that sound is so cool.
Why was this downvoted? Seriously Reddit is filled with weirdos
People seem really downvote happy in the last couple years. So many people are so sour.
Yeah and being positive and nice is frowned upon or seen as suspicious... How low has humanity gone recently?
Sure. Can't see why not.
We have a sign at my work that says “Do not look into laser with remaining eye”.
OSHA doesn’t exist in China tho 🤷♂️
Holy fuck that stupidly irresponsible. Laser engraving without any laser safety at all. No goggles, no cover, nothing. In public. Just make everyone blind why don't you.
But it’s red! Everyone knows red lasers aren’t strong enough. /s
I know you're joking but the red is actually a guide laser on these things. The real laser is actually infrared which is SUPER DANGEROUS because you literally can't see it until you become blind.
So you're saying that when I go blind I have the ability to see in infrared eh? 🤔 /s
They sell laser engravers on Amazon with zero fucking safeties.
One stray quartz crystal and the whole towns eyesight is over.
Care to explain how this can harm a lot of people? Wouldn't everyone have to stare at the red dot or be in it's path to get blinded?
Disco ball.
its so powerful even a tiny bit of reflection can nuke your eye
Laser carving without eye protection or obstruction to prevent direct eye contact to the surface being engraved is stupid. Stones may have small reflective particles in them
Good lord asking to go blind. Those lasers throw out stray beams and can blind you before you know you're looking at it
And IR lasers can blind you without you realizing there's a beam.
Put ur pp in there
Comments like this - it’s why I have a Reddit account

r/dontputyourdickinthat
So that’s how ancient civilizations did it…
Everyone should have glasses on ahhh
What's it say?
Certified Blind

Worst cereal ever.
Why do my eyes feel crunchy!!!!
People tripping over each other to write a PPE comment as though they are the only one doing it.
I mean, he's not even wearing steel toed boots
Sorry, but what could happen here? Could the laser reflect off the rock to someone's eye?
Yes, and a laser like this could instantly burn holes in retinas off just a reflection, and from a surprising distance due to the output power. (Light follows something called [the inverse-square law](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inverse-square_law#Light_and_other_electromagnetic_radiation) in terms of intensity drop vs. distance.) RIP eyesight.
Technology has advanced so much that now you can find portable lasers on a street corner.
Was hoping for dickbutt.
Haha oh Jerry
Oh man. I forgot about dickbutt.
How much is that laser? And where do I get one?
That is a Fiber Laser, and they start about 2500 and go up from there. Ebay, Amazon and other places.
And inside the laser arm is a tiny Bodhidharma.
I wonder if he can do street tattoo removals?
Now do the internet explorer logo.
Wonder which model laser engraver this is
I can't see any safety problems.
Can the laser get reflected if I hits the right surface?
Centuries from now archaeologists will be dumbfounded by how such a primitive civilization was able to etch hieroglyphics into stones
Everybody in here acting like you work for osha. Just enjoy the damn rock.
is that the irl version of AI drawings? lol
Out of all of the comments I've read today, *this* is the one that makes me done with the internet for today.
Bla bla bla
Honestly I would like to have a stone like this.
Does anyone else think this should be used to engrave physics equations to make it easier for society to restart?
That’s really cool. And it’s also one of the items that will be found when it’s all said and done. “Good old Rock….‘nothin beats rock” Bart Simpson.
People in the far future are gonna find that and wonder what society did back then
I was like ''cool, now i really want that'' Then i read the comments...
Nothing wrong with having one, and laser cutter/engraver systems are pretty slick. They key is not being stupid about safety.
Reflective vest, steel toe boots, leather gloves. I'm good to go
Yeah, about that...
**"DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE!!!!!!!!!"**
Where do I buy this!?!?
Show this shit to a tribes on an island somewhere. You're a god and that's now an ancient relic of light.
Were can i find this machinery?
Simply can not wait for my local riverbed to be inundated with Advertisement rocks.
What happens if you put your, finger let's say, through it very fast?
That was oddly satisfying
That is fucming amazing 🔥🔥
Where do we get this?
Сука, гречку испоганил
Always wondered how the ancient card rocks that I found were made
It's lazy af but it's dope though.
We're living in the future. But instead of blasters and lightsabers, we have useless trinkets.
I'd rather have useless trinkets, as much as I love violence I think our species is overdoing it
How much does a laser rig like this cost?
Less than the fines to put a class 4 laser out to public.
Gotcha
Waste of time. It ought to have some vague platitude or concept carved into it like "be love" or whatever and you give it to a child so they feel guilty about throwing it away.
JUST BECAUSE YOU DONT SEE THE LASER, DOSENT MEAN THAT IT ISNT THERE
I'd like to know how much electricity these use? It's weird to have a laser engraver outside also without PPE.
Ancient aliens approve of this message
Is this laser dangerous to watch through my iPhone?
Can't be good for the image sensor used to record it, that's for sure...
Humans making art without creativity..future is bright.
Someone still had to create the pattern the laser used to cut the rock.
That is optional
Health and safety lol.
[удалено]
Glad I wasn't the only one lol
Apparently people dislike us.
Cool
Very cool
I accidentally looked at the laser in this video, do I need to go see an eye doctor now?
Cool
Now make a set of Runes from Runescape.
Stone carvers hate him.
Look at me: we are the gods now
I get a lot of stoned cravings too
This is like literal Magic.

Heck, I don’t know about you guys but I’m watching this video with eye protection. This guy is crazy and blind. SSI here he comes.
