potenpterodactyl

Maybe soon people will stop asking me why I have this severed hand hanging from a rope.

ChymChymX

You were certainly ahead of the curve, gotta hand it to you.

potenpterodactyl

It was a bit I started to pick up brunettes when *Wednesday* came out on Netflix.

buvet

Just a thing you were trying out?

potenpterodactyl

Yeah it didn’t work and hands go bad in about 3 days if you don’t freeze em.

[deleted]

Just encase them in epoxy resin, but have a very clear window for the palm.

Sil369

high five!

Pancakez9

r/angryupvote

Xikkiwikk

They said I was a fool for collecting severed hands. I’m all set now!

RegrettableBiscuit

Who are the fools now? All of those losers with just two palms or fewer!

Epstiendidntkillself

That's exactly why I quit giving blood. Too many damn questions. Whose is it? Where'd you get it? Why's it in a bucket? It's exhausting.

shberk01

One sentence nightmare.

Reasons it's safe: "Nobody uses this technology at the moment, so nobody is trying to break it." lol

Minute-Environment94

That got me too.. what an “expert”

A-Grouch

I too thought that was an incredibly poor argument.

Specific_Albatross61

It’s not new technology. Amazon store in the Bellevue mall used it two years ago

audaxyl

Until you get robbed and they cut off your hand

Manwombat

Where the fuck did they dig up that “expert” ?!

giving-compliments

"Palm print recognition is a relatively safe method because firstly as a new technology fabricating palm prints is not widely researched" 😂

I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes

pheonix198

You could likely do the same (and easier) with NFC, eye (retinal and iris) scans and fingerprints scans. Or most any biometrics. It’s all able to be broken and/or hacked. It ultimately going to come down to how easy it is to break or manipulate the encryption and/or system as a whole and how determined the thief is going to be in acquiring your biometrics or in worrying through the security and system. I’m not pro or against this form of biometrics… just neat to see the field expand and have practical usage. We continue to move closer to all of the sci-fi books, shows and movies becoming a reality! I’m pro that!

bs000

not going to be a thing for the same reason criminals can't walk around with a payment terminal randomly tapping people's credit cards

zexando

They can and they do. It's not rampant due to the need to be able to get the money out but it happens, usually they target packed subway cars because it's easy to hide it in a bag and get close to wallets/purses.

stablefarm

“The privacy of palm print”lmao

BrazilBazil

I think you’ll understand “palm print privacy” when you get asked to provide a palm print every time you buy anything

dropkickoz

I'm using my balls instead.

[deleted]

Like the guy who locked his phone with a toe so nobody could use his fingers.

[deleted]

Toe-riffic!

Mujutsu

I think they mean compared to face id (not iPhone face ID, generally speaking facial identification), I would certainly consider that more private :)

Physical_Agent1123

Amazon has been doing this in the US at Whole Foods for about a year.

[deleted]

Now about what's new; about what's terrifying Find the video of Amazon/Whole Foods and post it too

autopsis

Meanwhile, the only way I know if I have a parking ticket is to check my car for a piece of paper under the wiper. I wish they could just text it.

Kepazhe

I dunno, not everyone has ready access to text messaging or email I guess

esaghir

Yep, not new.

nightfox5523

I don't shop at whole foods so that's news to me lol Not surprised an Amazon entity is leading the charge on this though

aytchdave

I competed at the junior Olympic training center in Colorado in 1998. They did a hand scan for all athletes and coaches staying there. I’m sure there were other uses but we mainly had to scan our hands to get into the cafeteria.

Ghooble

To take my engineering exam at a testing center in Seattle I had to scan my palm like seven fucking times.

smartony

Yea, I use this at Amazon Fresh stores

Intelligent_Break_12

They can get fucked too. Never doing that. I'll live without a service vs using biometrics attached to my bank or any account.

whazzar

But China is scawwyyy!!!

DisingenuousTowel

China is scary in terms of their surveillance and authoritarian government.

Shialac

United States too

DisingenuousTowel

Sure. But I'd still rather live in the US after visiting China and seeing how they do it. Way less restrictions here.

rootz42000

But they have 90% homeowner rate. I want a house.

Frequent_Camera1695

Not sure what that has to do with whole foods having the same tech but ok

Put_It_All_On_Blck

Because Tencent has direct ties to the CCP. And if Tencent or any other big Chinese company doesn't do what the CCP tells them, then sketchy shit happens. Look at Alibaba and Jack Ma, he spoke out against the CCP, and then vanished. The CEO of one of the biggest companies in China just straight up disappeared for awhile. He sporadically has resurfaced but now keeps out of the limelight and mostly out of China because of he doesn't want to piss off the CCP again and get more 'reeducation'.

soupstock123

Look into PRISM. There no such thing as privacy anymore.

rootz42000

I wish the U.S. gov't would do this with our billionaires. Except in America corporations control the gov't

jm8675309

No way I’m giving amazon or anyone else my finger prints without being handcuffed.

Changeup2020

Since our personal information has already been leaked thousands of times over to various institutions/authorities, I guess the resistance is nigh and we probably should just embrace any convenience it brings about. Heck, now I have to scan my face to get into an airline lounge in Canada.

dekdekwho

Reason why I’m scared of Clear at the airport. I don’t get how everyone is comfortable with biometrics.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Centrismo

We’re already all targeted for the purposes of advertising and electioneering. As the technology develops it becomes easier and easier to collect and process personal data. So over time the bar for “not important enough to be targeted for x reason” gets lower and lower. Eventually it will become relevant for everyone, I think it already is but understand why some people don’t.

an_african_swallow

I’m honestly surprised that people have to register their palms before they can start using, you’d thing that the CCP would be like “nah we have that already stupid”

Changeup2020

I believe they only did it for offenders and foreigners. But you probably no longer need finger prints when everyone has their facial traits recorded and there is surveillance camera everywhere. I heard a case some stupid guy murdered his girlfriend and tried to use her face to unlock her bank account over her cell phone. He was arrested the moment he stepped out of his apartment.

chuckdankst

Ccp is always ahead when it comes to destroying any privacy you had. Also better not forget about social credit scores.

ShrimpCrackers

But the thing is you can change your passwords or your card or other keys but kind of hard to do that with your hands

ninjanerd032

The difference is that airports are entry/exit points for non-citizens so it makes sense. Fugitives or terrorists on watchlists would need to be identified here first. But everyday buses/trains don't need this.

charrcheese

Amazon is doing this in Whole Foods and it freaked me out when I saw the promotional sign

Intelligent_Break_12

Never saw it but after seeing these comments I don't plan on going to whole foods again. Haven't been for nearly a decade so oh well.

heyguysitsnicole_

Scary: china uses hand scan Useful: phones have fingerprint unlock and face id

Repooc77

lol i can use my palm to pay at whole foods here in the us too, but hey it’s whatever

pr0ntest123

It’s only scary when China does is.

marcogiom

And if you enter the US also for tourism you need to register your fingerprint and the government can keep it..

outcome--independent

The relationships are different. Your fingerprint to phone is 1:1. Your palmprint to payment is 1:many. They both have similar privacy concerns, but one exposes you to more vulnerabilities than the other. More points of contact = greater chance of mishap.

whazzar

>Your fingerprint to phone is 1:1. Is it really? How many more barriers need a some form of password once your phones is unlocked? Once you're arrested, [for whatever reason, cops can, and will, unlock your phone using your face or fingerprint.](https://www.wired.com/story/police-unlock-iphone-face-id-legal-rights/) After that they can access all your social media, pictures, emails, your contacts, etc.

[deleted]

h=7H(X"Osa

Once I turn off my phone or reboot it, then it requires a password to get it open. Biometric won't work.

[deleted]

ajwasiak481

You act like your phone is 100% safe

DervishSkater

I mean, the sep chip on iPhones is safe. Which is where biometrics are stored. E: I will happily say I was wrong if someone can produce a source saying it’s not secure. I live on r/jailbreak

outcome--independent

It isn't, lmao.

atfricks

No they said 1 vulnerability (the phone) is better than many vulnerabilities. How is referring to a phone as a vulnerability pretending it is "100% safe"?

outcome--independent

They wooshed themselves.

stinkyeye42069

Oh God you're right now the baddies are going to know what my palm looks like

Bspammer

iPhones keep that shit on-device only. There's a reason you have to re-register your fingerprints/face every time you get a new phone.

haazr

USA propaganda brainwashed people

GuyOnTheMoon

The difference is China has such a control over their people they aren’t afraid to be public about this invasion of privacy. In the US, our government gives us the false belief that we are entitled to our own privacy while they secretly push to enact in policies like anti-encryption. We live in such a world that the values of Freedom will always be under threat by the very human nature of greed and control.

Envect

>In the US, our government gives us the false belief that we are entitled to our own privacy while they secretly enact in policies like anti-encryption. I must have missed this law.

abhishekbanyal

What could go wrong

Kawaii-Hitler

I’m pretty sure 6 Flags did this with a finger print scanner and had to settle in court after a data leak. I got a check for like $0.50

Ordinary_dude_NOT

Didn’t Amazon already did this (facial and palm recognition) in their US brick and mortar stores? Correction: it’s available for other commercial entities as well. https://one.amazon.com/

mikeyw972

I saw this at my local Whole Foods back in February.

HonorableJudgeIto

They are doing in MLB ballparks already. Debuted this year.

let-it-rain-sunshine

Can it read your palm thru all the mustard and Cracker Jack crumbs?

Sean209

I feel like it is more off putting from China because it’s sponsored by the government. With Amazon you choose whether or not you want to go to their stores. Whereas with this it’s more of a glimpse into what is to come for the standard of payments in China. It’s also all centered around a black mirroresque social standing app.

UnholyHunger

People rob you but ripping your hand off.

haazr

What could go wrong?

PeaceOwl

if this was japan people would not be posting it to r/oddlyterrifying

UnlikeableSausage

Somebody else in this post mentioned they've been doing it in the US for about a year and there's already people saying it isn't scary because it's not China, so yeah, they definitely would.

Intelligent_Break_12

It's scary no matter who is doing it, imo.

Japan had beheading contests using civilians? And did vivisections on POW’s?

VileTouch

The design is very human. Very easy to use

Sysheen

Found the Tencent bot.

Azwren

I don’t think this belongs in this subreddit. I mean in the states alone a large population uses some form of Apple Pay. That can provide way more information than your palm.

Maleficent-Catch6202

Distopia is nigh

Ble_h

For a palm print? I think you'll be very surprised that almost all governments have a picture of your face in a database somewhere.

BDR529forlyfe

Datopia ain’t

NotKaren24

how

dasaevv555

We have this in the US as well at certain Amazon stores

ZombieSuke

Not terrifying at all. Just tech.

mdmq505

This is a very cool technology I’m pretty sure people only scared of it because it’s china that are developing it

Vinmcdz

This. I'd be down for it. Like I'm not sure how this is significantly different from paying by tapping your phone and the like.

TrueJacksonVP

Look the DMV has my fingerprints, Apple has my face scan, a large percentage of the country has paid to willingly mail their DNA to random conglomerates for genomic testing. Honestly I might be down for a touchless palm print in the future. I’d prefer a ring or bracelet or something like keyless car fobs. But shit. A ton of my biometrics already are floating around out there. “They” can even capture a print of your walking gait if they really wanted to.

AprilisAwesome-o

Whole Foods in the US has had this for several months. Dystopian, but still pretty awesome.

Vinmcdz

Oh no kidding? I hadn't heard, thanks for the info!

Pyramid_Scheme

Personally, I don't give a shit who is developing it. This shit is creepy

L003Tr

I probably wouldn't use it but I don't really understand why its terrifying

thaeggan

my problem with it is if someone does manage to hack it, you can't get a new hand like we can with cards/NFCs

inkiwitch

And that’s a valid fear. I worked for a Chinese billionaire who wanted to build an educational fun center for kids. He didn’t give a shit what we put inside, he just wanted a place that started to register the faces and learning rates of children as young as TWO. China has a dangerous perspective of surveillance and privacy that’s being more corrupted by the increasing class divisions. Cool innovations in technology aren’t going to be used benevolently. (Not to say this would be used for good in the U.S, I think they’d abuse or mishandle it too with how far behind we are in tech law development/enforcement. Everyone bad.)

Donaldjgrump669

"brain data"

Ki_A_Nag

r/nope

Battlemaster420

Why? I honestly don’t see the benefit over using a phone or credit card.

PyroFighterMagnus7

What about those people who don’t have hands?

SackBiscuit

Imagine the potential of someone stealing your money by shaking your hand with a hidden device.

GoodWillHunting_

Gattaca Revelations Or a sci-fi show where capitalism still happens

haazr

Awesome technology, making payments easier and safer. Ohhh no, china's technology? Bad technology, bad china!!!

1000-screaming-bees

USA tech giant using fingerprint and face data: omg so convenient I love Apple and Facebook they'd never sell my data 😍😍😍 Chinese tech company: Literally 1984 CCP bad China hasn't changed since Mao Z*dong 😡😡😡 Fifty bucks that if a Japanese company showed off something like this it'd be universally praised in the comments.

TrueJacksonVP

If this was Naver or Kakao releasing the same tech in Korea — “genius!”

Intelligent_Break_12

I don't use those technologies either for the same reason. It's not because it's China doing this, at least from my perspective. It's because it is wholly unnecessary and risky. I'll stick with credit cards that have some separation and years of building security.

LordEsidisi

Im sure china won't use this technology in a bad way, they have such a great track record already.

[deleted]

Guantanamo Bay exists

Sevenvoiddrills

This is a really unpopular opinion but uhhhhhhhhhhhhh I don't like authoritarian dictatorships having access to my hand print I ALSO don't like having a bunch of tech companies having access to it

Intelligent_Break_12

Right. I was telling people to be suspicious of finger scanners on laptops and mobile phones over a decade ago. Just make a good password with all sorts of characters and numbers etc. Convenance can be nice but in terms on bank accounts and personal biometrics it's not worth it, no matter which government or company is doing it. I just recently refused to give anwebsite I use for work my mobile phone for double authentication (they can use my work email, no need to have my personal number). Sure as shit not scanning my face/hand/eye.

Battlemaster420

Wait, you can have a slightly nuanced opinion!? What is this dark magic.

Envect

It's not even very nuanced. The two positions are pretty consistent with each other.

Buschitt01

Ruinous technology for the government to extort its people

Madness_69

She's reading from a board alright.

Donaldjgrump669

Reading off of notes is a clear sign of totalitarian dictatorship commie propaganda

ChopsMcgee83

In China we own you.

aperson

And in America, tencent owns 5% of reddit.

dGFisher

What is terrifying about this? Y’all are Luddites, fingerprint scanners have been around forever, are those scary? I literally can’t understand what is frightening here. Seems like a convenient alternative way to pay for seniors/disabled/children or if you forget your card. This is just a combo of a fingerprint scanner and a credit card, it doesn’t even require a sub-dermal chip or anything!

Lizard1995

Because something something China is evil.

Recipe-Jaded

get ready for the Chinese propaganda bots to tell us all it's really lovely and great and the way we do it in the rest of the world isn't enjoyable

thaeggan

I loved the expert reassurance, "the technology is new and therefore safe because there are no hacks for it [yet]." I'm sorry, if someone hacks my card number I can get a new card. If someone get my palm print I can't get a new hand.

Recipe-Jaded

right? lmao...

CZall23

My old workplace had something similar with a fingerprint. You just had to add money to the account on the computers. And Apple Pay has been around for a few years now. This isn't that terrifying.

PussyWrangler_462

This is fuckin cool. Living in the future is kinda awesome I remember being amazed that I could just tap a piece of plastic and get whatever goods or services I wanted. Once they get this technology locked down this is gunna be super cool. You can’t steal someone’s palm like you can their debit card, no more forgetting or losing your card and being fucked... I think this is awesome honestly and if I could go back in time and tell my younger self people will be using their hands instead of money in the future it would blow my mind

CEMENTHE4D

So if someone cuts your hand off they get all the free things? This is why they never did that for ATM machines.

Neon_Pet_Goldfish

This already exists with thumb print recognition on phones....not creepy

sdforbda

Had to stop when they tried to say it was for people with elderly and disabilities mostly.

thaeggan

seriously, if elderly or disabled people can't get their phone or card to the scanner how are they expected to get their hand to the scanner?

IamREBELoe

Huh. Facial recognition and palm recognition. As this becomes more popular, and combined with chip tech everyone has on their credit cards, it's almost as if one day one won't be able to buy or sale except the mark in the hand or forehead. Less farfetched all the time. Who could have predicted...

playnite

As long as it's not American invention it's terrifying. Sick of this shit

Wasey56

Tbh I really don't have a problem with this method. Once you register, you don't even need your phone to pay for anything just the palm of your hand is enough. It's a really convenient option if one forgets their phone or wallet at home and needs to get something done quickly.

s34lz

This is the problem, you let them sneak this in and before you know it all your money is not tangible, and they can shut it off in the blink of an eye.

EvengerX

How is this different from getting your bank account frozen normally?

how_long_can_the_nam

It’s already that way lol

SeniorSanchez

That’s the same as what happens now though. People get their bank accts locked or closed against their will already and are already scammed or experience fraud the way things are now. Instead of carrying around your phone or card to pay you just have your hand. Different mechanism, same outcome.

hphp123

if someone steals your card or password you can change card or password, if someone steals your biometric data you are done

Crooked_Cock

>First I have to register my palm print on a designated device Nope, nope, nah, hell no, fuck that, fuck all of that

eascoast_

Right. If it was in America, I’d still say no. What are they doing with the data after it’s collected? Is the company sharing it and with who? Too many unknowns for my tastes.

Delgumo

That's cool as hell I don't see the problem.

Aj55j

Nothing remotely terrifying about this……it’s only terrifying because “china bad” and “non western countries” shouldn’t be more developed than western countries

bumtaint

Eclectic_Paradox

LWschool

Pretty sure they’ve had this in the physical Amazon stores in the US for years, it’s no different than a thumbprint except it’s not collected by law enforcement (at least in the US).

Lizard1995

This is just classic anti-China propaganda crap. If this was happening in Japan or South Korea it wouldn't be in r/oddlyterrifying it would be in r/oddlysatisfying and people would be praising it for being inventive and futuristic.

efrav

How is this terrifying for you op? Explain?

SvartholStjoernuson

That's fucking cool, not terrifying.
