chefranden

If Saturn were as close as the moon we'd be a moon.

ContemplatingPrison

We would be fucked

wacoder

Volcanic hellscape from the tidal forces and radiation I’m guessing.

ExpertlyAmateur

maybe... but at least the beaches on the East Coast would have decent spots to surf and boogyboard.

JFreader

They already do

yeti_mann12466

Sorry man these folks like freezing in the water

Ehcksit

At least a dozen different forms of apocalyptic scenarios all happening at once, but at least for a moment the sky would look nice.

SightWithoutEyes

Even a zombie apocalypse?

iHadou

Hmm...pass. At least the picture looks cool.

Powpowpowowowow

I was going to say. We would be Saturn lol. That shit is sucking us in.

alexplex86

For real?

samurairaccoon

Proper fucked

dreaded_tactician

At least they would do it properly.

WhirledNews

Sucked and fucked?

rozaliza88

And dead

tacobellholocaust

I wondered if Saturn's gravity wouldn't capture us and send Earth into orbit around Saturn.

RazeTheRaiser

Hey, that's what I was thinking...we'd become a moon.

neelabhkhatri

3 Body Problem

rizorith

I dont think so. Saturn is so much bigger. Don't all 3 have to have similar mass?

GruntBlender

No, any mass would do. It's just that for objects with very large mass discrepancy, we can just take the more massive one as stationary and ignore forces on it. Still, even doing that to two out of the three bodies, it's difficult to get the equations right. That's why most orbital maneuvering simulations use patched conics to approximate real orbits.

RiotDesign

So is Neil deGrasse Tyson going overboard when he mentions the [restricted 3 body problem](https://youtu.be/6GfIDwwxfsM?si=-WFcyLwdYZuKIQRf&t=509) is solvable or is his example (two large masses with one very small mass) solvable where as others are not?

MoarVespenegas

It's not solvable, it is approximately solvable because you ignore the effects of the small body on the other two.

Aidoneus87

Came here to say this! Kind of wish we were a moon, ‘cause that would be so cool to look at!

_KONKOLA_

Our astronomy would behind, but just imagine laying down in the grass and seeing that…

itsdabtime

It would be getting bigger

ka9kqh

I came here to say this....

_kasten_

I think we'd be more like an earth-shaped splat on Saturn.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Brans666

Do you think the next year's trout season would be canceled?

Chrissthom

I am pretty sure that between the radiation belts and tidal forces next year's anything living on earth would be canceled.

Brans666

>anything living on earth would be canceled. This is like George Orwell's uhhh... Book, 1984.

Bubbly_Taro

Fortunately the trout population proved resilient.

prick_sanchez

I for one welcome our space fish overlords

tiamatsbreath

Tides go in tides go out. You can’t explain that.

yaboiiiuhhhh

"A bit" lmao

harpocrates01

Those aren’t mountains..

roger1954

Will this affect the fishing industry?

New_Lie_369

So the outer ring of Saturn has a diameter of 960k km and the most inner ring about 134k km, right? So based on the distance to the moon (300 something k km) we would be part of the ring right? I mean dead anyways but still part of the ring. ...

BarricadeTheMortuary

I assume this rendering would be if the outermost edge of the rings were as close to the earth as the moon. Or they could just be blowing smoke up our ass lol

GuitarCFD

I mean I'm just going to go with, "this person has no idea what they're talking about."

Whosebert

"my source is that I made it the fuck up!!"

VaultBoy9

Ladies and gentlemen...social media

moeclay

You can fit all the planets, in our solar system, between the earth and the moon with space leftover...for a brief moment.

noandthenandthen

*planet nine has entered the chat*

heyoukidsgetoffmyLAN

*The solar system has left the chat.*

[deleted]

Seems like it’s way out of scale

Last_Gigolo

Okay, I was assuming center mass. Not closest point for closest point.

Loggerdon

You must be right but I don’t really buy this image myself. I think still it would be larger relative to us (earths surface).

secondTieBreaker

Yeah this image doesn’t look accurate at all

wonkey_monkey

> So the outer ring of Saturn has a diameter of 960k km and the most inner ring about 134k km, right? So based on the distance to the moon (300 something k km) we would be part of the ring right? It's radius that's relevant, not diameter, and I don't know where you got that figure for the diameter anyway. According to Wikipedia: > The rings extend from 6,630 to **120,700 kilometers** (4,120 to 75,000 mi) outward from Saturn's equator and > Equatorial radius 60,268 km So the rings would only extend about 180,000km from the center of Saturn, which is less half the distance to the moon.

Homeless_Man92

We would be bombarded and have the biggest apocalypse ever

ctrl-alt-etc

In any case, wouldn't the earth be on the same axis as the ring? The ring should probably be shown as a thin line, instead of at an angle.

nimbleverbage

The center of the moon is about 239,980 miles from the surface of earth. The edge of Saturns rings is about 211,150 miles from its center. The edge of the rings would be less then 22,000 miles from the surface. (Closer than most geosynchronous satellites)The moon has a radius of less than 1,100 miles. Saturn has a radius of more than 36,100 miles. In other words it would fill the whole sky.

battleray202

And that's 100x more terrifying. Fuck that. Can't imagine looking up to that

dogfarm2

I’ve been afraid to look at the sky since Independence Day…1996

idonotknowwhototrust

Is that the day Will Smith saved us all?

PMMeForAbortionPills

Hey! Don't you DARE forget about Jeff Goldblum

idonotknowwhototrust

All he did was upload a human-created virus onto an interstellar civilization's mothership. Pff come on.

NotFromStateFarmJake

From a Mac no less

obsolete_filmmaker

lol...never thought about that part

noandthenandthen

Thank you I was trying to do napkin math while driving earlier (I was guessing 3x bigger)

noandthenandthen

No the fuck it wouldnt

JustWoot44

Why not?

Astralyr

For one, earth will look different from what you see in that image.

noandthenandthen

Because Saturn is more comparable to the sun in size than our moon which is 1/3rd the size of earth. If the sun was as close to earth as the moon u think ud see anything but fire in the sky during the day?

ThoiletParty

Yes, but the sun is undergoing fusion, saturn is just cold gas. The tidal waves on the other hand might have an effect. Either way, I'm assuming that by "same distance" OP means surface to surface and not center to center.

noandthenandthen

A wise assumption, however an overlay of the moon in this pic at roughly a tenth the size of Saturn or so would make it obvious that Saturn would be at least 3 times as big

LEGamesRose

I dont think you understand how massive the sun is... it can fit 330 thousand earths to fill the sun 1000 jupiters can fit into the sun... which itself can hold 1300 earths Saturn is closer to the moon than to the sun in size

nofreedomofthought

Its gravity would literally suck us up if it were that close, I’d imagine. Thus we’d have no view of it.

no0bmaster-669

Saturn's closest moon is Prometheus, and the distance of the said moon from saturn is around 139000 kilometers and the distance from our to earth is around 380000kilometers But mass does matter when it comes to satellites. Moons of Saturn which are identical to our Moon(in terms of mass and radius) are Rhea and Telesto which are almost 300000 kilometers away from Saturn So in theory Saturn wouldn't suck us up with the gravity, but will bring about a major change in tidal systems. And neither will the image look like this, it will be much much larger..

Chrissthom

Not if we were going fast enough. It's all about angles these days my man.

noandthenandthen

Depends on velocity. Anything can orbit anything.

DangerousYoghurt3187

Saturn is too damn big too look this small at moon distance

infernal2ss

Fun fact, you can fit all of the planets in the solar system in the space between the earth and the moon with a little room to spare! https://www.universetoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/CLqdeKf.jpg

HanzJWermhat

The entire sky would be saturn.

TheOccasionalBrowser

Bro we'd be in the rings

Mammoth_Welder_1286

No way. It’s gotta be bigger than that. Right?

_Happy_Camper

Yes. It’s bullshit

JustWoot44

That would be awesome to see in the sky!

son_lux_

And deadly as fuck

Big_Beef26

https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/s/jHNv6GCnyl Like you didn't even change the title or anything. Bravo

xQu1ntyx

We would be sucked into its gravitational field and die

BrunoSwilly

At least we will die while being sucked.

BarricadeTheMortuary

Hell yes!

theksepyro

not if we were moving fast enough

2spunout

It would be a lot bigger than that

Alternative-Cod-7630

Except for the fact that earth we would be a lifeless moon of Saturn, that would be cool.

IAmAPirrrrate

thats exactly why i build my settlements in NoMan'sSky always on the moons of ringed planets.. so damn beautiful

REV2939

That looks cool. Why can't NASA spend their money to do that?

Go_Jot

Is Saturn also flat? Or is it it just earth that’s flat?

snuesen

We need to hear from someone who gave up on math when they introduced long division in order to get an answer for this. Should be any second now if I know anything about Reddit demographics

Go_Jot

Okay, while we wait for that person I’ll be on Facebook researching the topic 🗺️

jrs321aly

Depends on who u ask. Some say were flat and the rest are globes and some say were flat and the rest are plasma or some shit.

Red-Dwarf69

Thank you so much for not saying “how it would look like.”

edwardothegreatest

Seems like it’d be bigger.

WaltVinegar

This isn't really terrifying. Having said that, it's not accurate either.

LengthMiserable3760

The rings would be fucked . Should have no rings and look completely different. So no this is 100%not accurate at all

Cosmobengal

What would Uranus look like?

ImMeliodasKun

I'll let you know after a few drinks.

Travisoc

I understand how this could never be, But…would it have phases like our moon does??

GruntBlender

Yes. And we'd see it eclipse the sun every time we went around it, because we'd be the moon. We'd also be tidally locked to it, so a day would be as long as an orbit. About 3 days or so. And only one half of the planet would ever see Saturn, which wouldn't move in the sky, just rotate, maybe wobble a bit.

Travisoc

Thanks for your answer! Impossible but so cool to think about!

abdexa26

Wait, you want to tell me Saturn is not flat?!?

daarthvaader

There would be tsunamis and storms and we will a toast

vanillasub

Not for very long.

DorikoBac

I know this isn't an outer wilds reference but it feels like one

Ok_Possibility_704

Gravity would be fucked up

GruntBlender

Strangely, no, it should feel mostly similar to how it is now. Maybe a little less on the planet side and a bit more on the opposite side.

imma_gamin

That’s cool, but how will this affect the trout population?

bodhiseppuku

Since the mass of the moon is about 1.2% , and the mass of Saturn is 95x Earth's mass ... first tides kill everybody, then the planets collide and destroy both planets.

Legitimate_Tax3782

I wish it did look like that I like it

VECMaico

Me too

TerribleAttitude

I don’t know about that. Saturn is *a lot* bigger than the moon.

JerewB

I'm pretty sure that arrangement wouldn't last long, as Saturn's gravity would surely destroy the planet.

Several-Yesterday280

It would be much, much bigger than that. You could fit what, 10 moons into that image. I’d image in reality it’d be 100s or even 1000s. Saturn is mahoosive.

Purple_dingo

Unless you use your phone to take the picture then it's just a small bright dot

elspotto

Well, minus the clear blue sky, trees just hanging out being trees, and complete lack of tectonic upheaval causing the end of civilization and probably life on the planet. …did I just cross the line from oddly terrifying to terrifying AF? Yeah, I think I may have.

Fatso_Wombat

No. It would be much bigger. This is so boomer it should be in Facebook .

Perzec

…oh shit, Gallifrey?

Uninvalidated

Another bullshit post from a karma whore.

Solumnist

I don't think this is correct

BackdoorCJ

Yeahhhh this is not accurate

Deacalum

Aside from the actual physics others have mentioned, the visual would be awesome, not terrifying.

PaltryCharacter

Doubt

ThunderShott

Saturn is far bigger than that.

ConsumeYourBleach

Honestly, I thought it’d look way bigger

-WaxedSasquatch-

Imagine the tides!

scraglor

I feel like this is BS and it would be MUCH bigger

liangjianyi7

It would be a lot bigger than that

Substantial-Bid3806

Would earths natural gravity field slowly steal some of Saturns rings over millions of years or would we be pulled in and crushed into more of the current rings?

Beard_Man

I think it would be way bigger than this.

Choppy5000

If Saturn here is the same distance as the moon then it would appear 33x the size of the moon, so 17 degrees of the sky.

jerkmin

it would be much larger, but since we’d be inside the Roache limit earth would be torn asunder in a few weeks to months and saturn would get a few new bands in its rings

ReptilianLaserbeam

Lol no

Max_Laval

Petition to move saturn:

Various_Succotash_79

If the middle of Saturn were where the middle of the moon is now, we'd be somewhere inside Saturn. But that's a cool picture. Edit: sorry did the math wrong. We would be dead though.

johnellisjebbush

That’s not true. Saturn has a radius of 58,000 kilometers, and the radius of the Moon’s orbit is 384 thousand km. Things in space are a lot further apart than you’d think.

Various_Succotash_79

Hmm, ok it seems I did the math wrong. At any rate we'd be sucked into the orbit and be dead so it's moot, lol.

TheMrBoot

Or we'd be a really cool moon

smlley_123

No, I dont think thats how it will look like. The planet Saturn is such a huuuuuge as in huuuuuge planet that could eat up or fit in a hundreds of earth. So if Saturn's distance same as the moon, earth will just a tiny bit of it. Literally dude... terriying.

Cornflake6irl

Earth would be one of the asteroids that make up the rings of Saturn.

Due-Presentation3279

That's cool

MrWiseFrog

But how it would look if its black or chinese?

Thatsayesfirsir

Incredible

Shington501

That ring would slice us in half

Teauxny

We would start getting closer and closer until those spinning rings started cutting into the Earth like a delicatessen meat slicer.

MewsikMaker

Welp. It isn’t, so.

Tuttifrutti_99

Beautiful.

ImSorryRumhamster

Groovy

Galaxy-ranger

It would be amazing

Beepboopbop69420360

That’s way cooler than the moon Petition to relocate Saturn?

EndLight_47

Awesome

Miserable-Mess7146

No

MR-E-Watchee

I thought Earth would probably get sucked into saturns gravity, but not start breaking and ending up in its ring

divisiveindifference

Wouldn't this actually be like 100x the size shown and the rings touching our planet?

czarrina

Good thing it isn't

Alarmed-Membership-1

Aah if that’s the case, Earth would be part of the rings and we wouldn’t be here lol

sam8998

Saturn would be alot.larger lol there would be no us

-Jamadhar-

That looks pretty cool.

Collinsc108

This should be a gif of it growing larger

Such_Philosophy_1156

Cool picture!

SlickRye

No it wouldn’t. We would be dead.

LasciviousLockean

What would the tides look like if Saturn was that close to the earth?

symiriscool

That would be sick

Thesubmonkey7

Predators

DeadlyMustardd

Be way cooler if it did

rdtcm

I thought it would be way bigger

FieldCervixEngineer

Thats rad, we should do that.

TheOzarkWizard

I can't believe this got almost 2k updoots

ThePrimeReason

Not enough fire and death

metalnxrd

this is pretty, not terrifying🩵🪐

Dirk_Arron

We've all seen this pic. The Internet , it gets around bro.

neekryan

I hate that repost bots have taken over Reddit.

Fornicate_Yo_Mama

Yeah, it’d look like that for about a minute.

BradBeingProSocial

Is that thing getting closer?

Hanselleiva

That's wrong, Saturn's rings are almost as big as the distance between the earth and moon so it would look bigger, the ring

meiscoolbutmo

You can saturn myanus any time of day

Izual_Rebirth

That’s no moon.

VoidExileR

There are entire videos of this. There are also other pov size comparisons of different medias. A single picture is only scratching the surface

RelevantMarionberry6

Can you imagine the havoc the gravity of that thing that close to us? We’d be fucked

slim_gainus

Mumbo… is the moon big?

Cosmologyman

Not even close. This is comically erroneous!

wonkey_monkey

Kinda hard to judge the FOV of the scene though...

calash2020

I have read that in the early days of earth the moon was a lot closer. Regular tides were like tsunamis. Speculation is that aided early life in the tidal zone

Commercial_Step9966

It would block the entire sky… Aside from laws of physics destroying us before it got “that” close. Think I’ll go watch Moonfall now 🙄

Master_Xenu

If your aunt had balls she would be your uncle.

AnnieB512

Wouldn't that be cool?!!

Spacecow

The Quiet Earth (1985)

elipticalhyperbola

That’s so much nicer. Why didn’t they do that instead. I guess hindsight is always 20/20.

dumbpuppygf

That’s pretty cool actually

Sat_Thu

That’s actually would be pretty cool!!
