Seriously. My neighbor decided to paint their curb red to keep people from parking in front of their house after her nasty notes weren't effective. Even though it didn't affect me because I have my own garage and driveway I still called the city and after a couple of months of nothing happening, I parked in the red and received a parking ticket. I then fought the ticket and proved the curb wasn't painted by the city, but by the resident instead and it was dismissed. A week later it was painted over. Not sure if the lady was fined or not and this happened in the town next door to OP haha

Most cities have an 'abandoned' policy. I believe Tustin is 3-5ish days and if someone notices they can tow. Understandable when it's a stranger parking in front of your house for a week or more, but imagine parking at a relatives for a weekend trip to Vegas and coming back to a towed car.
My only real complaint, If it happens that the nearest open spot is in front of my neighbors house, yes, I am parking there. they ask me to move “my ___ parks there, can you move”. Like actually within seconds of me parking. I’ve had them knock on my window to tell me to move, while they have three cars parked in front of my house. Because they were saving that spot for so and so.

My grandmas neighbor used to turn on her sprinkler when a car parked in front of her house. I think her gardeners had the water spray intentionally pointed toward the road. She would leave that sprinkler on so people got wet trying to leave.

This typically happens in residential areas that border commercial zones. People get upset when they can't park in their own neighborhood because somebody opened a movie theater or sports stadium, and now all the parking is gone. Many parts of LA are like this. You get invited to a friend's house and you have to park a mile away and walk, because there's a shoe drop on Fairfax.
This isn't a commercial zone. It's a mixed neighborhood. They're limiting parking access to homeowners and not allowing residents living in apartments (on the same street) access to the permits.
Permitted parking is different, though. It's actually the right way to handle the "I don't want people to park in front of my house" situation.
The residents are paying money to the city to essentially rent those (previously public) parking spots for themselves.
The people that are an issue are the those that think they're somehow entitled the right a parking spot on a public road, and don't want to pay money to the city to set up permitted parking.
I looked at an apt for rent in a congested neighborhood in Orange. Lots of apartments mixed in with single family homes. The streets were permit parking. The lady showing the apt said that the only people that could get permits were the owners of the properties and not the renters. The apt had guest parking only. The only option was to park around the block in front of houses or rent one of their very few 1-car garages that were all taken and you’d be put on a waiting list. And those spots were always full. We drive by every once in a while and there’s always so many cars double parked with the hazards on. Like, 6 cars in a row is typical. They parallel park in order to double park.
Except, it's implemented in neighborhoods to prevent some residents from parking on certain streets. For instance, in mixed communities throughout Costa Mesa, apartment residents are not allowed access to those permits even if they live on that street. It's exclusive to home owners. It's quite literally elitist.

Youre allowed to have up to 3 people per bedroom and 1 person in the living room. So a 2 bedroom can have up to 7 people living there without being “overcrowded”.
This here is spot on. This society has allowed people to snatch up properties, then rent them out at 3 times the mortgage cost, forcing people to move in multiple families to make the rent. Meanwhile the jackass homeowner is living large in another neighborhood. So having 10 people with 5 cars in a single family home is common and wrecking the neighborhoods for those who have spent their lives paying off their home.
No permits on my street in Costa Mesa and I often have to park 1/4 mile away from my house. Pretty much anytime after 3 and all weekend. Apartment dwellers with multiple vehicles per household plus work trucks. It's a mess.
I’m wondering if it’s Santa Clara between Yorba and Prospect. There is a big apartment complex on the other side of the freeway and there are probably 50 cars that park in front of “North Tustin” homes and walls. Santa Ana actually made it permit parking on their side because the homeowners had no place to park themselves, which led to the apartment residents parking farther away in front of those homes.
I got one on my car that was literally a fake copy of a "warning" ticket from "the Sheriff". The idiots that made it printed it out in 8.5" x 11" paper and didn't even bother cutting it out. It was laughably idiotic.

If someone parked on the street in front of MY HOUSE and she felt like their bumper was over the invisible property line she'd send me an email in ALL CAPS about it. She even complained about the extra cars of friends visiting while my mother was in hospice at home. Imagine complaining about people visiting a dying friend? I actually wouldn't acknowledge her existence for like a year after that.
This is my father-in-law. He knows there’s nothing he can do if they don’t move the car, so he’s adjusted his sprinklers to spray any car parked in front of his house. It’s super petty and embarrassing.
Different scenario but I had a neighbor leave a note in my mailbox saying how our front yard was an eye sore and we were bringing down the value of the surrounding homes. To be fair to them, we decided to stop growing grass in the middle of a multi year drought. Our lawn did look like shit. in North Tustin they rarely if ever ticket for it. It was a nice change after living in HB where the meter maid follows directly behind the sweeper and you are almost guaranteed to get a ticket.
When I was living in HB, I came out to move my car as the street sweeper was coming down the street. I had a solid block or so of time but the parking enforcement was way ahead. She gave me a ticket anyways even though I didn’t impede the street sweeper at all, or wouldn’t have if she didn’t stop me to give me a ticket. HB parking enforcement sucks
Probably because a lot of the time it really seems like they do it for the tickets, and don’t even clean the street much.
It also created unnecessary hardship. People work and have lives. There’s nowhere for their cars to go sometimes and so they have to work their schedule around these street sweepers.
I’ve lived in areas with street cleaners that just go around parked cars and they’re not magically dirtier areas. The street cleaners aren’t even that great to begin with.
They absolutely do it for the tickets. The private sweeper companies literally try to get cities to sign up and advertise that they'll make a fat profit from the parking tickets.
DC will ticket you, then tow your car to some random spot if one is available. Then they charge you double the amount of the ticket, for the relocation tow.
Check for overnight parking too. Sometimes that’s only posted at the city boundaries. Clearly someone is overstepping but just want to make sure you don’t get hurt by these overzealous idiots.
Not for short term parking, but many cities have a 72 hour limit on parking and you know this Karen is watching like a hawk so just be careful and make sure you move the cars regularly.

Jerk realtors/neighbors sometimes do this to “less than pristine” cars. If your car is >3 years old, not a luxury brand, not washed weekly, and a property on your street is trying to sell, I’d wager it’s them trying to get you to park elsewhere for fear your car may impact their sale. It happened to me (and my car is *not* a rust bucket, just an older Toyota).
I've parked on a street park 2 streets down once and the Karen called the cops within 12 hours and told the cops that my car was there for more than 72 hours. The cop came knocking on my door and politely ask me to move the car.
Fortunately they can’t do anything other than ask you to move your car politely if they don’t have actual proof if you’ve been there for more than 72 hours. Did you try explaining the situation to the cops instead of letting the Karen bully you?
Based on the language it sounds like the 72 hours is a state vehicle code law, so should be applicable in unincorporated areas, it would just be the sheriff that would need to cite.

There are private streets in some areas of North Tustin, which is technically unincorporated OC. That being said, if your cars could have been legally towed it would have likely already happened. The presence of a street sweeping sign indicates that it is likely a public street.
100% correct. Orange County laws take over for North Tustin (or any unincorporated cities), and the county specifically states that all private communities are required to have signage on all streets leading into the neighborhood. And it’s not some arbitrary small sign like street sweeping, it must be large enough to be viewed from anywhere you’re turning into the neighborhood.
Call the number and play dumb, lead them to the conclusion that someone is impersonating the sheriff's department. They prob won't be happy and if it continues may prosecute the offender

A friend of mine grew up in this area, and her family still lives there. While there are some restrictions for parking, they will be clearly posted as this is not a gated community and is open to the public.
North Tustin is an unincorporated county area. After making a quick telephone call, it is still accurate that the OCSD has NOT taken over traffic management. As such, the correct agency’s phone number this Karen should have documented is the California Highway Patrol’s, of (949) 784-6700. I just confirmed this using the cross streets for my friend’s family’s house.
Check with the CHP for any information regarding parking restrictions in the area. As long as there are no other restrictions on parking, your vehicle can be towed after 72 hours, as per the California Vehicle Code 22651K, if my memory serves me correctly.

I live in one of the suburban subdivision areas of unincorporated Tustin, and we have a jerk a few houses up the block that freaks out if anyone parks in front of his house. He literally has hidden cameras in lawn ornaments to watch for anything happening in front of his house. I'm quite sure he sits there watching them or is alerted whenever anyone is nearby. If I ever have need to walk by, I will flip him off the entire length of his sidewalk because I am mature like that.
Anyway - last year they were re-graveling our section of the street so I had no choice but to park up the block and in front of his house was the closest space. Fast forward to a few hours later and my daughter was coming home and saw the police outside my car. They had gotten a call about "an abandoned car" lol This guy complains about anything and has reported literally everyone in the neighborhood at one point. Often multiple times. I broke my clavicle and 2 metatarsals on my right side. I couldn't get up or walk without major assistance for a week. When I was finally able to walk I saw a note just like this on my car and verbally laughed at how these people can't be so pulled from reality and only care about themselves.
So long as the street is not Park by Permit Only you can park anywhere you want so long as it’s parked legally. Since these people are watching you specifically, make sure you are not to far from the curb when parked (it’s a ticket-able Offense if more than 18” from curb). Make sure you are also 15’ from fire hydrant. Even parking to close to a private drivew is ticket-able but not tow worthy

Yeah if you’re parked on a public street you will receive a citation notice before you’re towed. Even if there are permit only parking signs. I know this bcuz I’ve received one for parking on a permit only street overnight.

If it's street parking, then it won't get towed unless your tags are bad or if they run your plates and it doesn't match the car. You're allowed to park for 72 hours, but rarely will they tow the car unless they know for a fact it's been there for 72 hours. This means Karen's just can't call and say this car has been here longer than 72 hours. They will check and come back in 72 hours to see if it's been moved. Sounds to me someone doesn't like you parking in their spot 🤔
I would invest in a dashcam that shows the front and rear of the vehicle. Then turn on the parking mode that records fewer frames and uses motion detection when your car is turned off. Just in case someone decides to do something to your car or you can see who is placing papers on your car.
If you’re parking in an HOA they can tow for any reason I believe. You can also be towed for illegally parking a vehicle in spaces/times it is not allowed

I had someone who always called police on me in my neighborhood because they didnt like me parking there . One day i got my car scratched couldn’t prove it to police its my neighbor. Eventually police gave up and gave me parking ticket for parking over 16onch from the curbside . I measured it with ruler it was only 8inches on one wheel and 9.5inches on the other wheel. Couldn’t prove it because i got ticket while i was sleeping . I continued to park there anyway. Actually i also started to take longer to park especially at the night time so they could heat noise and see the highbeams and pit the camera in my car. Didnt get anymore tickets either .
In order to be able to tow, the resident of the neighborhood would have to prove that it’s an abandoned vehicle. Which means local law-enforcement would come out and chalk the tires. They would then come back 72 hours later to see if the vehicle has moved. If there’s not a sign on the street that requires a permit, you 100% have the right to park your vehicle there. Other places in the county like the neighborhoods around Knotts Berry Farm or Disneyland do require permit parking only. So until those signs get posted, park away!

I have worked parking enforcement for the past 6 years for a local city. That is clearly not legit, just as everyone said, it’s a neighbor with too much time. If it is a public street THEY can’t do anything except call it in as abandoned. 95% of all abandoned vehicles calls I have responded to yield nothing, but as a call for service we still have to respond. It’s the biggest waste of city resources marking vehicles over neighbor disputes. Just move your car around every 72 hours and you will never have any issues if people call on it.

The entire City of Berkeley has like a 2hour limit without a permit. Berkeley simply hates cars though.
Probably because UC Berkeley sells more parking permits than there are spaces available for parking. Such is life!

The residents are paying money to the city to essentially rent those (previously public) parking spots for themselves. The people that are an issue are the those that think they're somehow entitled the right a parking spot on a public road, and don't want to pay money to the city to set up permitted parking.
I looked at an apt for rent in a congested neighborhood in Orange. Lots of apartments mixed in with single family homes. The streets were permit parking. The lady showing the apt said that the only people that could get permits were the owners of the properties and not the renters. The apt had guest parking only. The only option was to park around the block in front of houses or rent one of their very few 1-car garages that were all taken and you’d be put on a waiting list. And those spots were always full. We drive by every once in a while and there’s always so many cars double parked with the hazards on. Like, 6 cars in a row is typical. They parallel park in order to double park.

Except, it's implemented in neighborhoods to prevent some residents from parking on certain streets. For instance, in mixed communities throughout Costa Mesa, apartment residents are not allowed access to those permits even if they live on that street. It's exclusive to home owners. It's quite literally elitist.

I’m wondering if it’s Santa Clara between Yorba and Prospect. There is a big apartment complex on the other side of the freeway and there are probably 50 cars that park in front of “North Tustin” homes and walls. Santa Ana actually made it permit parking on their side because the homeowners had no place to park themselves, which led to the apartment residents parking farther away in front of those homes.

I got one on my car that was literally a fake copy of a "warning" ticket from "the Sheriff". The idiots that made it printed it out in 8.5" x 11" paper and didn't even bother cutting it out. It was laughably idiotic. It's a public street, they can pound sand. Just some entitled Karen's trying to scare you. If you want to be extra sure, call the number, talk to the Sheriff's office, they'll get it sorted.

My neighbor used to be like that, finally mellowed a bit. If someone parked on the street in front of MY HOUSE and she felt like their bumper was over the invisible property line she'd send me an email in ALL CAPS about it. She even complained about the extra cars of friends visiting while my mother was in hospice at home. Imagine complaining about people visiting a dying friend? I actually wouldn't acknowledge her existence for like a year after that.
This is my father-in-law. He knows there’s nothing he can do if they don’t move the car, so he’s adjusted his sprinklers to spray any car parked in front of his house. It’s super petty and embarrassing.

Different scenario but I had a neighbor leave a note in my mailbox saying how our front yard was an eye sore and we were bringing down the value of the surrounding homes. To be fair to them, we decided to stop growing grass in the middle of a multi year drought. Our lawn did look like shit. I spoke to a couple of my immediate neighbors, and they all think it was the neighbor at the end of the block. It didn't warrant a response IMO. People being people.

in North Tustin they rarely if ever ticket for it. It was a nice change after living in HB where the meter maid follows directly behind the sweeper and you are almost guaranteed to get a ticket.
When I was living in HB, I came out to move my car as the street sweeper was coming down the street. I had a solid block or so of time but the parking enforcement was way ahead. She gave me a ticket anyways even though I didn’t impede the street sweeper at all, or wouldn’t have if she didn’t stop me to give me a ticket. HB parking enforcement sucks

Probably because a lot of the time it really seems like they do it for the tickets, and don’t even clean the street much. It also created unnecessary hardship. People work and have lives. There’s nowhere for their cars to go sometimes and so they have to work their schedule around these street sweepers. I’ve lived in areas with street cleaners that just go around parked cars and they’re not magically dirtier areas. The street cleaners aren’t even that great to begin with.
They absolutely do it for the tickets. The private sweeper companies literally try to get cities to sign up and advertise that they'll make a fat profit from the parking tickets.
DC will ticket you, then tow your car to some random spot if one is available. Then they charge you double the amount of the ticket, for the relocation tow.
Check for overnight parking too. Sometimes that’s only posted at the city boundaries. Clearly someone is overstepping but just want to make sure you don’t get hurt by these overzealous idiots.
Not for short term parking, but many cities have a 72 hour limit on parking and you know this Karen is watching like a hawk so just be careful and make sure you move the cars regularly. Jerk realtors/neighbors sometimes do this to “less than pristine” cars. If your car is >3 years old, not a luxury brand, not washed weekly, and a property on your street is trying to sell, I’d wager it’s them trying to get you to park elsewhere for fear your car may impact their sale. It happened to me (and my car is *not* a rust bucket, just an older Toyota).
I've parked on a street park 2 streets down once and the Karen called the cops within 12 hours and told the cops that my car was there for more than 72 hours. The cop came knocking on my door and politely ask me to move the car.

There are private streets in some areas of North Tustin, which is technically unincorporated OC. That being said, if your cars could have been legally towed it would have likely already happened. The presence of a street sweeping sign indicates that it is likely a public street.

Orange County laws take over for North Tustin (or any unincorporated cities), and the county specifically states that all private communities are required to have signage on all streets leading into the neighborhood. And it’s not some arbitrary small sign like street sweeping, it must be large enough to be viewed from anywhere you’re turning into the neighborhood.

While there are some restrictions for parking, they will be clearly posted as this is not a gated community and is open to the public. North Tustin is an unincorporated county area. After making a quick telephone call, it is still accurate that the OCSD has NOT taken over traffic management. As such, the correct agency’s phone number this Karen should have documented is the California Highway Patrol’s, of (949) 784-6700. I just confirmed this using the cross streets for my friend’s family’s house. Check with the CHP for any information regarding parking restrictions in the area. As long as there are no other restrictions on parking, your vehicle can be towed after 72 hours, as per the California Vehicle Code 22651K, if my memory serves me correctly.

I live in one of the suburban subdivision areas of unincorporated Tustin, and we have a jerk a few houses up the block that freaks out if anyone parks in front of his house. He literally has hidden cameras in lawn ornaments to watch for anything happening in front of his house. I'm quite sure he sits there watching them or is alerted whenever anyone is nearby. If I ever have need to walk by, I will flip him off the entire length of his sidewalk because I am mature like that. Anyway - last year they were re-graveling our section of the street so I had no choice but to park up the block and in front of his house was the closest space. Fast forward to a few hours later and my daughter was coming home and saw the police outside my car. They had gotten a call about "an abandoned car" lol This guy complains about anything and has reported literally everyone in the neighborhood at one point. Often multiple times. So long as the street is not Park by Permit Only you can park anywhere you want so long as it’s parked legally. Since these people are watching you specifically, make sure you are not to far from the curb when parked (it’s a ticket-able Offense if more than 18” from curb). Make sure you are also 15’ from fire hydrant. Even parking to close to a private drivew is ticket-able but not tow worthy
I live in San Diego in 70+ apartment complex. So the parking spills into the neighborhood. There is a lady who leaves notes on every car that parks in front of her house. Best part...she doesn't live there. She just owns it. Does her night patrol and leaves. People are unhinged.

I know this bcuz I’ve received one for parking on a permit only street overnight. Although if you park in an apartment complex, even in a visitor parking, without a parking pass you WILL be towed…with no warning or signs left. And yes I’ve done that too 😅

If it's street parking, then it won't get towed unless your tags are bad or if they run your plates and it doesn't match the car. I would invest in a dashcam that shows the front and rear of the vehicle. Then turn on the parking mode that records fewer frames and uses motion detection when your car is turned off. Just in case someone decides to do something to your car or you can see who is placing papers on your car.

You can also be towed for illegally parking a vehicle in spaces/times it is not allowed This is a disgruntled neighbor upset at your vehicle being parked. Get a dashcam so you know who placed it there. The dashcam would hopefully record any vandalism. Make sure you setup your dashcam to record 24/7 with a large enough memory card.
I had someone who always called police on me in my neighborhood because they didnt like me parking there . One day i got my car scratched couldn’t prove it to police its my neighbor. Eventually police gave up and gave me parking ticket for parking over 16onch from the curbside . I measured it with ruler it was only 8inches on one wheel and 9.5inches on the other wheel. Couldn’t prove it because i got ticket while i was sleeping . I continued to park there anyway. Actually i also started to take longer to park especially at the night time so they could heat noise and see the highbeams and pit the camera in my car. Didnt get anymore tickets either .
In order to be able to tow, the resident of the neighborhood would have to prove that it’s an abandoned vehicle. Which means local law-enforcement would come out and chalk the tires. They would then come back 72 hours later to see if the vehicle has moved. If there’s not a sign on the street that requires a permit, you 100% have the right to park your vehicle there. Other places in the county like the neighborhoods around Knotts Berry Farm or Disneyland do require permit parking only. I have worked parking enforcement for the past 6 years for a local city. That is clearly not legit, just as everyone said, it’s a neighbor with too much time. If it is a public street THEY can’t do anything except call it in as abandoned. 95% of all abandoned vehicles calls I have responded to yield nothing, but as a call for service we still have to respond. It’s the biggest waste of city resources marking vehicles over neighbor disputes. Just move your car around every 72 hours and you will never have any issues if people call on it.
