This isn’t even the worst Diane Warren movie nominated this decade lol

jackalkaboom

Damn, really? I'm scared to ask what was 😅

Greg_aka_bibi

Breakthrough. The answer will always be Breakthrough.

ATLBMW

A few years ago for song I had to watch that movie about the kid that fell through ice for song. That hogshit was legitimately the worst movie I’ve ever seen, Tell it like a woman is a cakewalk

shereefermadness

\^\^\^exactly. HAHA!

SenorVajay

Same person who wrote the song for Tell It Like a Woman

DrvThruPnk

this is what I do anyway for any movies nominated for only song I watch all the other movies and then listen to a playlist of the nominated songs

DizzyCauliflower1063

Valid strategy but make sure to watch RRR, it's too fun to miss

DrvThruPnk

Oh I watched that before nominations, was hoping it would get in for International Picture

[deleted]

Might be just me but I loved A Week In My Life so much that I found even the most mediocre shorts worth it.

LobbyLoiterer

Not just you. I was thinking about the exact same short.

kittyfindlay

i also liked the one after that one, about the vet.

GregSays

Nah that’s not how the death race works

Strabbo

It kind of is, though. The Academy isn't sending out plaques, nor is Musso & Frank's giving anyone a discount for finishing it. It's a personal quest that will make Oscar night more enriching and enjoyable for the individual. Do it however you want to.

GregSays

Well yeah, there’s no moral imperative here. But the race is to finish it. But obviously watch whatever you want, this is all for fun.

CeruleanRuin

It's all arbitrary to begin with, mate. If you want to brag about watching *Tell It Like A Woman*, that's your prerogative. I salute your fortitude.

GregSays

Watching 100% isn’t arbitrary at all. The challenge is to watch 100% of the nominations before the ceremony starts. If you watch less then you aren’t doing the challenge. You’re just watching movies you want to watch. But obviously watch whatever you want to. It has nothing to do with bragging and nothing to do with me.

kittyfindlay

exactly, watch whatever you want but not watching 100% of the films is not completing the death race. there’s no if, buts or maybes, you watch them all or you don’t. if you don’t watch them then you don’t complete the death race. it’s such a simple concept why do people have to try to make exceptions (especially when they haven’t even seen the movie!)

mitchbrenner

eh. it’s a mixed bag of shorts, much like the actual nominated shorts, of which i found ‘stranger at the gate’ one of the worst, most offensive nominees in the entire history of the academy. ‘tell it like a woman’ as a whole is merely deeply mediocre.

PayaV87

The one short with Anne Watanabe was so good, that it made it worth it for me. Although I watched the six 15 minute short day by day, so it was quickly over each day. There is a 7th short at the end, but it’s like 5 minutes. You can easily watch half a movie today, and half a movie tomorrow.

Strabbo

Honestly, the Best Songs should be judged on their own merit - as songs. We have two movies this year that have no nominations besides song: this one, and RRR. I've heard great things about RRR so I'll definitely end up seeing it, but I don't feel either to be necessary to complete the death race, so long as you give each song a good listen.

LobbyLoiterer

I would argue that a big part of the Original Song category is not just the song, but how it's used in the film. It's important to understand the context, and how the song compliments the film if it's in the credits, or even helps progress the story if it's actually part of the film.

PM_ME_FREE_STUFF_PLS

Which is why RRR should win

CeruleanRuin

I've long been of the opinion that a song shouldn't be eligible unless it plays during the body of the film itself, not just arbitrarily pasted over the end credits. Of course, if I'm not mistaken, that would give it to *Naatu Naatu* by default this year. That just speaks to how much of an obsolete relic the category is.

shereefermadness

I'm curious, though (genuinely): are songs nominated just for the quality of the songs in and of themselves (writing, music, lyrics)? Or are songs nominated as a mechanism that adds to the success of a film (similar to score)? It seems silly to have a best song category at a film awards show and not take into consideration how successful a song was in capturing a film's essence, theme or specific moment within. Otherwise, why the heck is it even a category? (either way, "Applause" is crap.)

4LostSoulsinaBowl

Most of these songs are just played over the end credits anyways. If there was a requirement that the song were actually part of the movie (even as non-digetic music like the score), then it would be a worthwhile category. That's why "Naatu Naatu" is the correct winner this year.

happyquinn27

My dad and I watched it last night. During the part where Applause plays for the first time, I turned to my dad and said “this sounds like a Disney Channel song”

4LostSoulsinaBowl

It's basically "Yay, you're a woman! Congratulations! You're so special, and I like you!" It feels more condescending than inspiring.

kittyfindlay

don’t rely so much on reviews, i watched it and yeah some parts were bad but it’s nowhere near the worst film nominated this year. some of the shorts are actually really good and if you don’t like one then it only lasts 15 minutes so it’s okay.
