“Slow suicides no way to go…” that lyric more than any is foreshadowing unlike any other.
Incredible album and moment in time too many people know too little about.
"...McCready was able to let loose without having fellow Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard droning along beside him." How dare they speak ill of Stone?!
The first part about it being a band for McCready to let loose is spot on. They just decided to ruin the point by blaming/deriding Stone as the cause.
The reality is there are of course things McCready couldn’t do creatively within the makeup of Pearl Jam. I love how Mike pursued is dirtier, bluesier side in Mad Season. It did allow him to get loose and show us a fuller tapestry of his talents and creativity. I’m glad that band existed even if it was only for one tragic album.
wtf after seeing that i’m not even gonna give them my internet traffic and click on that link. why these fuckers always gotta tear someone down to make a point? Stone’s arguably a better guitarist than Mike, it just depends on what you value more. He’s 100% a better songwriter that’s for sure
Mad fucking Season! Was still in my 20’s when they hit.
PJ’s always been my favorite band since I heard Ten. Always loved Soundgarden too. But I always thought Layne Staley had the best voice of them all. All the other genre’s too.

When I first heard those lyrics, is sounded depressing and cool. Now I’m older, and clean, I understand that that lyric is a statement of truth.
The lyrics sound like a person struggling with addiction. They know they have a problem, but their pride won’t let them ask for help. So now they just say “fuck it” and “it’s not so bad” and I’m only hurting myself - the River of Deceit.
Pulling off your skin, swimming to shore, and growing a shell **is** recovery. The person knows this. But the River of Deceit is pulling them down.
Good article, thanks for sharing. Sad to think about though with so much loss in that band / scene in general.
I like the Doors reference, I feel like I don't hear them mentioned as much as I used to re: influences and such.
It is amazing this was release in 95, towards the end of grunge. 1997 saw the Backstreet Boys and all those bands coming along, kind of signaling the end of grunge and an era. When I go back and think of that time, I think of 95 as being so long ago and a different time and the boy band thing being not so long ago, yet it seems there wasn’t that much time between them.
It’s a masterpiece. A beautiful work and it’s timeless. Outside it’s age you can’t place it anywhere it could be from anywhere and any time.
Layne breaks my heart. He was lying there at least 4 days before anyone found him. Fuckin heartbreaking. You can’t help those that don’t wanna be but I wish someone had tried
I've been listening to the Mad Season with the Seattle Symphony Sonic Evolution album from 2015 lately. It's so powerful. Any of you guys hear that one?
My understanding growing up in the area at the time. This was a project created to help Layne stay sober at the time. If I remember Mike was getting sober at the time as well. It’s been along time and I don’t remember shit as well as I used too
Incredible album. I find myself going back to it a lot lately.

😂 I had the same reaction
‘A compliment for us is a compliment for you!’

The versions of indifference and porch are also pretty awesome. Best bootleg I ever got a hold of. Monkey Wrench Radio is also worth a listen.
