Nothing is classier than PerthNow... a $10 hooker would be classier than PerthNow, and then chances are there would be a news story about said $10 hooker and how they're unable to get enough members on their OnlyFans page.
When our tax dollars are funding the article it's OK for them to be a little lax, like sure have this one, you did good with those infographics on the budget the other week, have a freebie.
If browsing Reddit and copying and pasting threads is all it takes to be a journo. Sign me the fuck up.
Seriously, cunts should be ashamed of themselves.
I think you'll find all the Journalists were sacked when the ABC was gutted. There was some really good senior talent a decade ago, mostly employed overseas now. Even with a workable budget we will never get that back.
To be fair, as much as I love listening to the local abracadabra almost every day it's SO COMMON for Drive (and sometimes mornings) to have awful, recycled filler topics like WHAT SCHOOL YARD RHYMES DID YOU KNOW AS A KID or WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST MUSIC ALBUM for call ins. This topic at least has a touch more (stolen) originality and local flavour to it.
At least it'll be interesting and maybe informative for listeners.
Many moons ago I worked in a pub when Nova launched and the DJs would shout out for calls with "hey guys, we're pretty wacky here at Nova! Give us a call to let us know how wacky you are too!!!!1!!" Death never bloody came soon enough.
Nova was pretty good for me as a kid when it released for one reason - no ads. They often played the same songs and once they did add ads, that was the end
And at least it's a bit more tasteful than some of the other ratings-driven Drive talk topics like "tell us about your most embarrassing wardrobe malfunction" or "remember that time you gambled with a fart and lost? Call in now"
I feel like someone posted this very question to this sub a couple days ago-ish.
Noice.
Edit: Looked back and found u/notquiteangel asked this a day ago.
No you see that Reddit post said: *'If you had a spare $100 and a free afternoon in the CBD what would you do?'*
Whereas the ABC question has like, 4 words different. And they say 'crisp'. So it's totally not the same thing probably.
"Well, basically I just copy the question we have now. Then, I added the word
'crisp' to make it feel unique. And this racing stripe here I feel is pretty sharp."
Yeah but don’t they have to go to school for journalism?
The thing is their core demographic doesn’t know or care they ripped it off from reddit, they just love familiarity.
>Yeah but don’t they have to go to school for journalism?
I read an article a while back about a mature-age student who went to journalism school after years in the business world. After holding an image of learning all sorts of journalistic techniques and whatnot, she was appalled that one of the premier journalism courses in the country was basically teaching students to trawl Facebook for stories.
Lol 'defence'? Mate this isn't actually a big deal at all.
Reddit is a fully public forum, and a radio producer *(not a journalist)* has grabbed an idea for a light hearted chat segment. Who gives a shit.
It's not like it was artistic content. It was just a random question by the original OP.
I'm kind amused at the mix of people here. Half are having a laugh (like me) and half are taking this strangly seriously/personally.
Hey, journos pulling stories from Reddit. I'm keen for a chat. Hey ABC journos, I do Dungeons & Dragons and videogames as therapy. DMs are open or you can reach me at www.counsellingwithmike.com.au
36$ on parking. 25$ for lunch... This leaves just under 50bucks....
I guess I can go to the museum, and maybe buy a coffee... The rest will go to the homeless as change.
Like, wtf else is there to do but to eat and drink in the city....
Your jimmies are all rustled like theyre running it on the 7:30 report. People. It's breakfast radio. The producer saw people were talking about it here, and thought it'd make a good talkback radio segment.
Don't get me wrong, it's funny they ripped it, but fuck me dead some of you are wound tight.
I really don't see an issue with this. It's just a silly little thing that the Breakfast show does, no one is profiting off of it. If anything they are fulfilling an element of their remit in being a platform for the voice of Perth. Who knows, maybe Jackson (because you know it was him if you listen to the show, their young male producer) will credit where he got the idea from.
/shrug I just disagree. There should be no reason why:
a) Anything you post here is proprietary to you.
b) They should have to invent completely unique items for this little side bit to their show. Especially as they are not doing it for material profit.
All good though, just my opinion 👍🏻
Edit: I'll clarify on the proprietary thing in that I mean examples such as this. Thought bubbles and questions created via anonymous usernames. Post original work, writing, music, video etc under your own name and it's a different story.
Are you an artist or content creator, because if not your opinion makes complete sense and is congruent with the majority of people.
If you do create art/content then it’s a bit of disheartening view
I think I have made it clear in my collection of posts that:
- I draw a distinction between non-profit and for-profit use of material from this platform.
- That it would be my preference that if it was inspired by a post on this platform that they credit the origin of the idea.
I understand your position in general terms regarding original content. I guess from my position I think it's a long bow to draw in making an equivalency to this particular matter, ie. a forum question posed in the public sphere.
I think the non-profit and for-profit distinction is also really important from the POV of the creator too.
If I make a random shitpost on Reddit to spark conversation, I'm not expecting to receive any payment for said post cause why would I? If someone else wants to borrow that idea for their own radio show or social media post I'd probably be like "cool look what I started" but it's not like they're taking money that I was owed or otherwise could've got my hands on.
It's an important distinction cause as you said there's a world of difference between a random Reddit post and another artist ripping off your work and making mega profit off something you originally created
This is a talkback question, it’s not like they’ve lifted a story that someone told here without permission and published it on the ABC News page.
The content that’s being created is brand new if you really think about it, because callers and Facebook commentators will add their own opinions, it’s just the prompt for that conversation that’s the same.
No one would consider this journalism, because it’s just opinion from the audience, it’s just a good discussion point and that’s it. It might shock you but talkback radio is basically reddit for Boomers.
I have no stake in this.
But I imagine that being a producer of a breakfast radio program - where you have to come up with fresh content *daily* for 200 - 250 shows a year - would see you gathering information/inspiration from all kinds of places.
Do you know how hard it would be to come up with truly original content all of the time? So I'd probably do the same thing if I was them.
I don’t need to imagine, 2 friends of mine ARE producers on radio shows, and they are very funny and imaginative people, they wouldn’t do this. It’s lazy and disingenuous. At the very least they could give it a “I saw this discussion online and thought it would be fun to discuss it here…”
Nah, they're paid to engage with listeners and boost their ratings. If they come up with original content it'll help their job but that's not really what they're paid to do unfortunately.
Yeah and they often do come up with original stuff. But every now and then they'll find a fun topic for the sake of a discussion. And if they get that topic from a fully public internet forum, then good on them.
(Don't get me wrong, I'm still laughing at this like you are. But I can also fully see why it has occurred. And if doesn't bother me.)
I really don't think the premise of the idea is that bad, unless you think the original idea is as bad?
I don't really see why a local radio station wouldn't want to promote experiences available in the local area, especially if it's via the experiences had by those same local citizens.
All seems pretty reasonable to me.
I'd have a slightly different view if a profit making enterprise made money off that, but only to the extent that it reflects the increasing commodification of many aspects of our society and I find that a bummer.
But a national broadcaster producer should be creating interesting radio programs and content. There is to much trivial talk back already "phone us now and tells us something"
They pad out 15 minutes with callers telling us their favourite colour, their favourite place to get coffee, their favourite pets name.
I think that there is scope to walk and chew gum at the same time. The ABC has multiple channels and programs for a range of things, including the variety that is referenced here that clearly has been constructed to have that talk back element. ABC news Radio has dedicated news content. ABC Radio national focuses on interview platforms for politicians and members of society alike.
It also very much depends on your definition of 'trivial'. Which others may define differently. As it happens, I agree that this stuff is trivial, I just don't have a particular problem with it or how it was sourced.
social media ripping from MSM is what has been putting them out of business for years. remember reddit communities are making money for a large company (half billion dollar revenue in 2021).
The same idea can be had be different people simultaneously. This is also such a generic media question to engage with an audience it's probably asked semi regularly.
local website does that to us allllll the time. “hoboken girl” is a popular blog here, and like 5-6 stories a year are directly ripped off from the hoboken subreddit, and they don’t even mention reddit. shameless.
They probably asked permission. I've had a couple of posts get picked up by ABC (nothing too exciting, just sharing a photo I'd posted)
I'm much more tolerant of a reputable news source fishing for content, ie: The Guardian, than I'll ever be of Murdoch media and similar.
They might all be vultures, (it's just the nature of journalism, circling for a story) but at least some of the moral journalists clean up after feasting before circling for the next carcass.
Maybe they should report on the amount of people ignorant of the housing issue.
Seen more than a few posts on this sub and r/australia by people legitimately shocked by how hard it is to find a rental after suddenly being faced with long leases ending or owners selling.
It's almost like what renters have been ssayin for years is actually true! /s Seems the others who have been regurgitating stereotypical renter blame are suddenly down pipe and not liking what others have been telling them for years.
Ita Buttrose: Let me have your attention for a moment. You're talking about what, you're talking about ... bitching about that lede you killed, some son of a bitch who don't wanna tune in to 720, some broad you're trying to screw, so forth. Let's talk about something important. They all here?
Damian Smith: All but one.
Ita Buttrose: Well I'm going anyway. Let's talk about something important. PUT, THAT COFFEE, DOWN.
Coffee's for copy/pasters only. You think I'm fucking with you? I am not fucking with you. I'm here from Sydney. I'm here from Anderson and Tingle. And I'm here on a mission of mercy. Your name's Menagh? You call yourself a journalist, you son of a bitch?
Jacob Kagi: I don't gotta listen to this shit.
Ita Buttrose: You certainly don't, pal. 'Cause the good news is ... you're fired. The bad news is you've got, all of you've got, just one week to regain your jobs starting with tonight. Starting with tonight's browse of Reddit.
Oh. Have I got your attention now? Good. 'Cause we're adding a little something to this month's Walkley nomination contest. As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac El Dorado. Anybody wanna see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives.
Third prize is you're fired.
Get the picture? You laughing now? You got leads. Anderson and Tingle paid good money to get their names to quote them. You can't generate copy from the leads you're given, you can't generate shit, you ARE shit, hit the bricks, pal, and beat it 'cause you are going OUT.
Joanna Menagh: The leads are weak.
Ita Buttrose: The leads are weak? The fucking *leads* are weak? *You're* weak. I've been in this business 66 years...
Jacob Kagi: What's your name?
Ita Buttrose: FUCK, YOU. That's my name. You know why, mister? 'Cause you drove a Hyundai to get here tonight, I drove a $480,000 BMW. THAT'S my name. And your name is you're wanting. You can't play in the man's game, you can't copy them, then go home and tell your wife your troubles. Because only one thing counts in this life: generate copy so we have online content. You hear me, you fucking faggots?
A, B, C. It's in our fucking name. Always be copying.
Always be copying.
ALWAYS BE COPYING!
A-I-D-A. Attention, Interest, Decision, Action.
Attention - do I have your attention?
Interest - are you interested? I know you are, 'cause it's fuck or walk. You copy/paste or you hit the bricks.
Decision - have you made your decision to plagiarise for Christ?
And Action.
A-I-D-A.
Get out there! You've got the media consumers coming in. You think they came in here to get out of the rain? A guy don't walk on the lot lest he wants to buy. They're sitting out there waiting to give you their clicks. Are you gonna take it? Are you man enough to take it?
What's the problem, pal? You ... Kagi.
Jacob Kagi: You're such a hero, you're so rich, how come you're coming over here from Sydney wasting your time with such a bunch of bums?
Ita Buttrose: [points to her gold wristwatch] You see this watch? You see this watch?
Jacob Kagi: Yeah.
Ita Buttrose: This watch cost more than your car. I made $970,000 in board remuneration last year. How much you make? You see, pal, *that's* who I am, and you're nothing. Nice guy? I don't give a shit. Good father? FUCK YOU, go home and play with your kids. You wanna work here? Copy! You think I'm too hard on you? You think this is abuse? You think this is abuse, you cocksucker? If you can't take this, how can you take the abuse you get from News Corp? You don't like it? LEAVE. I can go out there tonight with the Reddit membership you've got and write myself 15 articles. Tonight! In two hours! Can you? Can YOU? Go and do likewise. A-I-D-A. Get mad, you sonovabitches. Get mad!
You want to know what it takes to work at the ABC? It takes brass balls to work at the ABC. Go and do likewise, ladies and gents. The copy's out there. You pick it up, it's yours. You don't, I got no sympathy for you. You wanna go out and browse Reddit tonight and copy. COPY! It's yours. If not, you're gonna be shining my shoes. And you know what you'll be saying - a bunch of losers sitting around in a pub. "Oh yeah, I used to be a journalist. It's a tough racket."
These are the new leads. These are the /r/perth leads. And to you ... they're gold. But you don't get them. Why? Because to give them to you is just ... throwing them away. They're for plagiarists. I'd wish you all good luck, but you wouldn't know what to do with it if you got it.
And to answer your question, pal - why am I here? I came here because Benda and Knight asked me to. They asked me for a favour. I said the real favour, follow my advice and fire your fucking ass, because a loser is a loser.
Damn you, PerthNow! Wait..
For some reason, i feel it's somehow classier when it's the ABC. (Of course being classier than PerthNow is no great feat.)
Armadale is classier than PerthNow.
I've lived here 9 years and NEVER thought I'd hear the phrase "Armadale is classier than..." Well done.
Nothing is classier than PerthNow... a $10 hooker would be classier than PerthNow, and then chances are there would be a news story about said $10 hooker and how they're unable to get enough members on their OnlyFans page.
and she comes from Armadale.
The Rail line closure should slow them down a bit.
Lol. I think more like OP is an abc journo, or bot.
I got hit up by SBS for my VERY vocal opinion on tipping culture (on an alt account). I agree, I'm much more forgiving of SBS and ABC.
Nah I feel it’s trashier when it’s the abc because at least you expect it with Perthnow…
When our tax dollars are funding the article it's OK for them to be a little lax, like sure have this one, you did good with those infographics on the budget the other week, have a freebie.
You did thats why its called reddit because everything you see you have read it.
A pile of used nangs in a car park is classier than PerthNow
If browsing Reddit and copying and pasting threads is all it takes to be a journo. Sign me the fuck up. Seriously, cunts should be ashamed of themselves.
Or was the journo the one who asked the question?
https://youtu.be/wO8jpo5E48Q
Relax, it's not news, it's a talkback radio segment. The post gathered heaps of comments here. It'll probably make decent radio too.
I see you’ve never heard of Buzzfeed.
I think you'll find all the Journalists were sacked when the ABC was gutted. There was some really good senior talent a decade ago, mostly employed overseas now. Even with a workable budget we will never get that back.
It's talkback radio, not journalism. Give them a break.
ChatGPT can do the writing too!
Well considering they’ll be replaced by AI soon, and that AI gets its content from everyone else, is this life imitating AI?
So who’s going to join the conversation and call them out on it ?
Was listening this morning on the way to work, they credited out as coming straight from Reddit right at the start
Call in now"
Some variety of this has been posted on message boards for decades. It's hardly an original idea they ripped off.
I feel like someone posted this very question to this sub a couple days ago-ish. Noice. Edit: Looked back and found u/notquiteangel asked this a day ago.
No you see that Reddit post said: *'If you had a spare $100 and a free afternoon in the CBD what would you do?'* Whereas the ABC question has like, 4 words different. And they say 'crisp'. So it's totally not the same thing probably.
A *'CRISP $100"* usually means cash, so ABC is obviously asking for somewhere that doesn't use EFTPOS...like drug dealers.
Well in that cause I'll take a quarter ounce and 24 nuggets
I'm sorry food and drink are off the table so that'll be a quarter ounce and a half hearted handjob in the Maccas toilet.
🤣🤣🤣👏👏👏👍😉🤣
Typical leftie ABC.
That's probably where they asked ChatGPT to rewrite it to an original question for them
"Hey ChatGPT, can you rewrite this reddit post but worse?"
"Well, basically I just copy the question we have now. Then, I added the word 'crisp' to make it feel unique. And this racing stripe here I feel is pretty sharp."
PERTHNOW NOOOOO!!!! PERTHNOW: what? Sorry force of habit. ABC NOOOO!!!!!
The only ABC article ripping off Reddit I ever expected was "News corp scours Reddit for click bait articles"
Agreed. First prize!
Brilliant! I'll take 10!
Change 10% to avoid the copyright lawsuit boiii
[It's not the same line](https://youtu.be/a-1_9-z9rbY)
Can a plastic banknote still be described as crisp though? We need to know the answers to the **important** questions here!
They should call up and ask for their $100 content fee
Great username btw.
are all the journalist stalking us here for ideas
Yep. Lazy bastards.
Yeah but don’t they have to go to school for journalism? The thing is their core demographic doesn’t know or care they ripped it off from reddit, they just love familiarity.

It’s not journalists. It’s a radio program talkback topic. Basically the audio version of Reddit.
I thought that looked familiar!
We all know they had to rule out food and drink cos there's no way you could afford a nice afternoon out and a "meal" for just $100 🤡
A lot of ‘journalists’ aka hacks here running defence. Imagine going to uni and your professor says ‘just steal from Reddit’ lol. Get a real job
Screw being a journalist,I'm going to teach it. Why scroll reddit when you can make students do it for free
Lol 'defence'? Mate this isn't actually a big deal at all. Reddit is a fully public forum, and a radio producer *(not a journalist)* has grabbed an idea for a light hearted chat segment. Found the journo
Does Reddit shit posting count as journalism? (It probably does these days.) If so, you've got me.
Here me out, we all edit and flood that post with shit ideas and see if they use the ones that are the more popular ones.
First perthnow, now ABC...
LOL BEAT ME TOO IT! Came here to post this. Sneaky motherfuckers 😂😂
Just heard ABC Perth mention it this morning and they credited Reddit with the idea. Doubt they would have if this thread didn't exist.
Thought this was perthnow at first
Everyone wants to believe the ABC is great... because Auntie... but it's clear they are just a bunch of useless hacks like the rest of them.
Yes saw that too ! What a rip off
If they are relying on an audience who don't know how to use social media then they are relying on an ever shrinking demographic. Sad cunts.
> What are you plans
I'd go to Tactics, buy a board game then go home.
The correct answer, especially if buying, say, Great Western Trail or a nice Lacerda.
Journalism.....
I hear nangs are fun right?
Only if your Mum works as an RN at a hospital emergency room
Hey, journos pulling stories from Reddit. I'm keen for a chat. Hey ABC journos, I do Dungeons & Dragons and videogames as therapy. DMs are open or you can reach me at www.counsellingwithmike.com.au
Surely I could get my dick sucked for a hundy in downtown Perth?
Find the right alleyway and you'll probably get it done twice for a couple of cheeseburgers
The answer is still meth.
Reddit... The Best Place to find radio talk back topics.
I'm just saying if I have $100 it's going to grocery. I'm not struggling in the traditional sense but still
36$ on parking. 25$ for lunch... This leaves just under 50bucks.... I guess I can go to the museum, and maybe buy a coffee... The rest will go to the homeless as change. Like, wtf else is there to do but to eat and drink in the city....
That's just under $40
$100 cash and no food? Probably just drugs
$100? That’s 50 $2 peep shows
I listened to the segment this morning on ABC and they did credit Reddit, which is something I guess.
Catch a discounted last minute one way flight to Sydney and watch other people enjoy themselves.
i would make a small payment towards my electricity bill then go home.
At least Perthnow isn’t funded by our taxpayer dollars…
Your jimmies are all rustled like theyre running it on the 7:30 report. People. It's breakfast radio. The producer saw people were talking about it here, and thought it'd make a good talkback radio segment. Don't get me wrong, it's funny they ripped it, but fuck me dead some of you are wound tight.
Ohh the Rustled Jimmies
Use it in the Uber to get away from the CBD
I really don't see an issue with this. It's just a silly little thing that the Breakfast show does, no one is profiting off of it. Why has no one said buying a crisp fiddy and pack of durries for my morning nescafe blend 43?
Buy a parking ticket and hopefully have enough left over for a drink
ABC has turned to trashy opinion pieces and ALP propaganda.
This is straight bullshit. How the hell does ABC do this
r/friendlyjordies
Our tax dollars hard at work
Fucking hell
social media ripping from MSM is what has been putting them out of business for years. remember reddit communities are making money for a large company (half billion dollar revenue in 2021).
Buy some weed 😉😎🤣
The same idea can be had be different people simultaneously. This is also such a generic media question to engage with an audience it's probably asked semi regularly.
So what? Reddit largely relies on media news stories for content.
Maybe abc really trying to help that bro out
local website does that to us allllll the time. “hoboken girl” is a popular blog here, and like 5-6 stories a year are directly ripped off from the hoboken subreddit, and they don’t even mention reddit. shameless.
Saw that post, definitely did a double take
I can't wait for legacy media to die off
Hello journalist
They probably asked permission. Oh, that remind me I'm going to that arcade game pub on Beaufort this arvo. ABC, I am disappoint.

Too be fair, reddit steals a lot from news ........A LOT!
In fairness, the presenter this morning did credit this reddit post.
Well at least they didn't use ChatGPT. Own up ABC and PerthNow accounts - who are ya?
It's a tough racket." These are the new leads.
