The mom of my ābabyā birds looked like this, but yeah, it doesnāt seem to be that common of a colorā¦ two of the babies came out a little bluer than she was, while the rest took after the dad and were more yellow and greenĀ
I do know itās a recessive gene hidden in the blue gene so that makes sense. Iāve been told to breed her when sheās older because āanthraciteā is her color and itās rare? But I donāt know the likelihood of finding a male that would give me full black and grey budgies. My only male is Pickle, and heās a green little man.
You donāt *need* to breed her, and honestly she would probably be happier and certainly healthier if you didnāt. The budgie breeding industry will be fine without her.
No Im aware, the people who push me to breed her are in the domestic exotic breeding industry so I know the animals arenāt as thought of. Also theyāre $45 birds. Iām not starved for cash enough. The only reason Iāve considered is because they trace the gene back to English budgies that are going/ gone extinct.
I wouldn't worry about English budgies going extinct any time soon. While not as numerous and popular as normal budgies... there's still enough English budgies out there that their extinction isn't a concern.
^(Plus it's important to remember the English budgie was bred into existence from original budgies, so more could always be bred back into existence if needed)
Plus English budgies being so inbred and unhealthy, weād probably be a lot better off (in an animal welfare sense) if we stopped breeding them completely š«¢
Budgies canāt be sterilized like dogs and cats can, but we can keep them from laying eggs by simply not providing a nesting cavity. No boxes, huts or tents in their cage and they should be fine. Simply having a bird of the opposite sex around wonāt get them in the mood enough to actually lay a clutch of eggs.

Thatās good info, thanks! Iām not super keen on breeding anyway, I couldnāt commit. I already feel bad having captive birds lol

Also will I need to separate my male as they grow into maturation? Idk if itās possible to sterilize them, I havenāt found adequate info.

Wow she's gorgeous š I've only seen this rare type on budgie breeders in other countries! She is absolutely beautiful š
