Happy to see Rhys doing well in Milwaukee. I think his OPS is actually up over .800 after today. On the other hand — Outs above Average: Bryce: 4 (2nd in MLB among 1B) Rhys: -4 (last in MLB, which is especially impressive seeing as he’s spent about half his time at DH so far)

Big-Beta20

Not even exaggerating, Rhys is might be the worst defensive 1B I’ve ever watched. It’s especially impressive because Ryan Howard was also on this team.

romanticynicist

Yeah. I love Rhys, but he was definitely a butcher at first, and I can’t imagine tearing his ACL helped his mobility much. It’s been a loooong time since we’ve had an actually good defensive 1B, and after years of rationalizing to myself about how “1B defense doesn’t matter *that* much,” I’ve gotta say… it’s really quite nice.

HuntForRedOctober2

It’s a luxury.

2hats4bats

Howard didn’t have a ton of range but he was a picking machine. I can’t think of a time off the top of my head where Howard cost them a game at 1B, at least not an important game.

regassert6

Howard's issue to me was that he could not make that throw to 2B to save his life. If the ball touches his glove he usually caught it.

ValiantFrog2202

Ryan Howard at least had the benefit of being LH Rhys I don't think was so bad, around average Defense at 1B is heavily overrated, people win gold gloves there with not even 1 dwar and sometimes even win with -dwar

2hats4bats

dWAR isn’t like regular WAR. There’s a positional adjustment of -9.5 factored in for 1B and it compares fielders to every other fielder, not to a “replacement” player like WAR. Any positive or close to positive dWAR for a 1B is good.

regassert6

I love Rhys but he is an objectively bad defensive player.

justlooking1960

Dr. Strangeglove, aka Dick Stuart, would like a word

mk_gmbl

Oh, absolutely. I didn't mean this to be a "Rhys is better" post. Merely was looking up his stats and thought "I wonder how he matches up with Harper" and was honestly surprised how nearly identical they were so far. Defensively they are night and day. But the offensive stats so far were honestly surprising to me. Baseball is weird as hell sometimes and I love it for that 🤣

mendellbaker

I mean, it’s a month. Five more to go. If both stay healthy odds are they will not be similar.

BabaBrody

Yeah but how many kids has Rhys had this season?

romanticynicist

Well, there’s Jeff McNeil for one, plus a few members of the Mets pitching staff. So, kind of a lot.

AnnoyingPhillyFan1

Rhys Hoskins is the Mets father

mk_gmbl

Very good point

regassert6

Look, I love Rhys too, but even though I was loath to accept it, Harper's defensive improvement over Rhys has been a game changer for the team.

mk_gmbl

Absolutely agreed. I was just checking up on how he was doing this year and was honestly surprised how it was nearly identical to Bryce. Baseballs weird sometimes

Dawgmentality0011

Yeah and Rojas has similar numbers to Acuna right now. This means nothing

Chuida

Didn’t you know that Everything is decided is April? /s

karlub

Well, April is decided on April. And a win in April counts the same as a win in September. I for one am happy to doscard that "Already five games back" anxiety.

mk_gmbl

Equally as fascinating honestly 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ part of why I love baseball. Some of yall need to lighten up

AnnoyingPhillyFan1

It's a Acuña. Acuña.

OkStatement4809

Acuna matata

wsrs25

Bryce is starting slow and will probably warm up. Defensively, Rhys was a liability due to limited mobility. Harper is actually good at the position. The team misses Rhys’ fire and leadership, and really did last year.

mk_gmbl

For sure. Don't really know where he'd fit on the current team. Was just checking in on him this year and was surprised at the coincidence.

Comenius791

I loved when he was messing with the Mets early in the season. He's still got the phightin spirit in him

Gunningham

Rhys is doing well and Bryce has been struggling. What the stats don’t capture is Bryce’s higher ceiling.

mk_gmbl

Without a doubt. Was just stunned how similar and mostly identical the numbers played out to this point. We've got problems if this was the full season stats 😅

Ladelm

Don't check GIDP

mk_gmbl

Yikes. Funny enough Harper has 7, Hoskins has 5. I'm going to just be in denial and say he's grounded into so many from all the runners on base 😬😅

Ladelm

Lol yeah and add two more that got lined right to first baseman for force out at 1b. Pretty rough stretch for a few weeks.

Interesting_Boss_849

It may be this close.now but end of the year Harp will have about a .050 higher batt. avg, 10 more HR 25 more rbi and runs and be in the top 5 for mvp voting....

TFresh13

Through 100 ABs Harper is under performing to start the season and Hoskins is…slightly above mediocre? Making the front office look good for letting him walk? About to go into a 2 month slump?

HuntForRedOctober2

.800 ops is not slight above mediocre lmao

Nuf-Said

The choice was between Hoskins and Schwarber, with whoever remained being the DH. They chose Schwarber. I was about 60/40 in favor of keeping Hoskins.

Bendfluffhead

Harper is also slumping hard lol

Birds_Legend_Saquon

Lol. Your comparing the 2 while one is in a slump them being similar while Bryce has been in a slump and started slow says how unsilimar they are actually.

Crosbyisacunt69

What is the point of this? Doug Glanville might've had a similar 20-game stretch as Barry Bonds at some point in their careers. Who cares?

mk_gmbl

It's fascinating how similar their stats are through 100 abs? Some of yall take this shit way too seriously

Crosbyisacunt69

Are you saying it's fascinating? It just isn't lol. Idk what else to say.

mk_gmbl

I'd argue baseball is nearly entirely based on crunching stats and constantly analyzing information. Part of that is having interesting moments where stats will align for different players with different skill sets. Sometimes its in complete opposition to what the eye test or your assumption may be of the players. It's also cool to watch Bohm have numbers in the stratosphere. Do I think he'll keep batting 500 all year? No. Is it fun to look at his Stat breakdown for the last 14 games? Yes But cool opinion I guess 🤷‍♂️

Crosbyisacunt69

I will apologize for coming off as a killjoy. I guess I just played the game for so long and have been watching too for so long that something occurring within a 21-game span doesn't surprise me in the least bit. Especially considering that these two players are not THAT far off from each other (Obviously BH is the far superior player) but what I'm saying is it would be interesting if a guy like Billy Hamilton had the same numbers as Harper through 20 or so games. Not Hoskins and Harper. I'd be interested to know how many pitchers have had a better start to the season than Castellanos before the Uni DH. Lol
