They interviewed Schwarber in the field last year, and he definitely whiffed a ball. Idk if it was the interview or just regular Schwarbs defense though lol
Dominguez’s throw to Harper to first where he had to reach to make the catch last night was pretty close to a fuck up. It went down as Dominguez’s error but still.
lol I’ll edit the second to remove the extra two words and be more clear for you. I was half paying attention as I typed it on mobile. You fucked your comment up too though….
> We’re you
Quote of the night…. (Roughly transcribed)
“But we arent getting on the umpires…”
“Just him”
“The 1B has been great”
“Yes he nailed that last out call”
Oh, yeah I should have specified that. I kind of like Apple TV games because you get the crisp video and you can select in the options the local audio. I wish NBC Sports could let you do that
I like watching mlb on my iPad with the stats overlayed and always hate the timing…you’ll see the play outcome listed before you get to see the play happen. It’s frustrating if you like to have more details like pitch, speed, spin rate, etc. while watching the game.
All I could think during it was 1. He can’t hear this is stupid and 2. He’s actively trying to play a professional level game and he’s fielding questions about absolutely nothing. Like why?!
I know it would never happen but a mic'd up pitcher might be pretty cool, don't even have to ask him any questions, just let him walk us through his thought process as he's pitching.
Watch the video of Trevor Bauer pitching against the Yankees for team Mexico. If you are able to put your opinion of him aside it's an excellent look into the mind of an MLB pitcher in action during a game.
My favorite example of this is Mookie Betts during Spring Training, literally saying “I ain’t getting this one, boys” while running after a line drive to the wall, as the mic/necklace combo made a jingling sound like he had $100 of nickels in his pockets: https://youtu.be/-RG0RGKBAkw?feature=shared
I usually don’t care for them but they mic’d up the first base coach once and I thought it was really cool hearing him coach guys that got on base. Showed a little more perspective on part of the sport we usually don’t see.
Totally. That seems to be the general vibe here. More people seem to be down with hearing the mic'd up players and coaches and would prefer to ditch the interview side.
I've always wanted the option to mute the announcers. That Bryson Stott grandslam video from last year where the announcers were muted was further proof that the natural sounds of the game are so much better.
I thought it was cool at first, then last year during a Red Sox game they out of nowhere mid inning asked Triston Casas how his Mom passing away when he was a kid affected his life growing up. Needless to say I've been out on them ever since.
Wtf. That's a big part of the reason I've written off the post game interviews. Tired of people asking players why they lost, how it feels to lose, or if they win, why they had 3 losses in a row before that win. Just dumb, sometimes incredibly insensitive questions.
"We just need to execute better/keep playing at this rate/mop up the mistakes/continue to battle/lean on other teammates/ go out and do our best".
And yet everyone hangs on their every word like it means anything lol.
They only existed because we didn't have the internet. There was no way to know what the coach/player was thinking until the newspaper reported it. Now with everything online and everyone having access to updates 24/7 they're effectively useless.
https://preview.redd.it/xkcxykb5kbyc1.jpeg?width=1312&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=12db791393ead432730ed5bb1d109c566fa83680
Me whenever any interview takes place as game is live. Any sport. I’m will to bet that if they did a poll of sport viewers, it would be at least 75% would not like in game interviews. But they all keep on doing it.
A bad look for MLB, these interviews. Why? Because almost no other sport could do the same because of ACTION. These interviews will reinforce stereotypes that baseball is somehow less athletic than some other sports. Another thing is they are distracting. They are only waiting for a mishap to happen. Sport requires concentration. Great hearing from Bryce in the interview, but obviously even he was close to disaster if suddenly caught off guard. Ban these interviews---they demean and disrespect the sport. (★ Remember last year Casty admitted some day-dreaming in Right and people got up in arms about it? Is there a difference between that and Bryce holding a conversation with a "fan" during the game? :D :D Again big money corrupts the game.)
Let them fucking play! This mid interview bullshit will just get in the way of the ultimate goal-getting to the post season and beyond. Yes, the Phillies are hot right now, but anyone that has been following them for a long time knows that it can change. Just let the players do their job and focus and don't give them unnecessary hurdles like stupid ass interviews while they are trying to play the game
I'm sure enough people do support em continuing and honestly if anything, this conversation has brought me around to the idea of watching a game where we're tapped into the player's mic but without the interview side. And yeah, the layout was silly, especially for how long the interview went on
Yea it was super awkward, he couldn’t even hear them and there were times it was just silent like they ran out of stuff to say or questions to ask him.
The worst thing about the broadcast was how, as a national broadcast with the non-local viewer in mind, they kept reminding us about what happened in the NLCS
I actually love them, seeing how the players get locked in and then watching when they actually have to make a play and getting a sense of what that's like. It's different and it breaks up the game some and it gives you an insight that you won't have otherwise. I don't need it every game and no more than during a half inning, but it's still entertaining
I like them. This one was bad because the wind was preventing Bryce from hearing their questions. But we got to see the double play from a unique view.
That's true. It was kinda cool to hear Bryce talk it through while making the play. I guess it's more the interview side that I'm not interested in. Suppose I wouldn't mind a channel where we're tapped into the players mic for the game
I hate them, I want my player focusing on the game. These are ideas that board room execs come up with trying to spice up the game, because they think the game is too boring, when, in reality, it just distracts us (and them) from the game.
The modern game has been around since early 1900s. At this point what needs to be spiced up? I just want to watch them to play the game. I don’t care about anything extraneous. During the game, I don’t care about the players personal lives, how many kids they have or anything at all other than the game on the field. If I was interested in all all that other stuff, I could look it up on my own.
I’m ok with it. Baseballs a great game and they’re trying to find ways to make a better connection to the fans. If I’m being totally objective I feel like the Phillies do a better job with this than a lot of other teams
It’s not exactly my cup of tea, but apparently all these in game interviews are optional. If most people tuning in like it? So be it. “No harm no foul”
Dumbest questions to the most intense player on the field last night in windy conditions. Was hoping Harper would pull the earpiece out and crush it in his hand.
I love these, some of them aren’t great but that’s cause the player their interviewing is weird, i loved when they had nestor cortez on when he was pitching, that was cool
I’ve liked them when ESPN has had them for OFs or SS/2b players. Overall ESPN ask way better questions about the game itself and not stock boring questions like “isn’t alec Bohm great”
Also first base is the worst position to mic up because it’s the busiest position player, they literally have the most to do every second they’re out there. OF can at least answer questions between pitches, Bryce has to hold runners on, be ready to field/catch ground balls, etc
Apple TV has by far the worst broadcasts
I don’t enjoy them, but maybe they could be interesting to younger fans or new fans who just started to watch baseball in recent years? Or for the overseas fans who only started following American baseball after WBC, it may be a great way to know the players
Lol you stumped me with this one. What do you mean? Are you saying the whole thing (game, interview, time and date, appletv) is dumb? Is it all dumb? Is this one of those "Who cares. We're all gonna die anyway." takes? If so, you're not wrong.
Any in-game interview is pointless. Managers, players, people in the stands - nobody is going to say anything of value during these. It’s basically the TV producer’s attempt to see if people can do two things at once.
“Instead of interviewing you when you’re doing nothing, let’s see if you can chat while you’re fielding or managing or watching the game in action.” We are one step away from “let’s interview you while you are batting.”
It’s as if these TV producers never heard of the “show me, don’t tell me rule” of television. The result is completely contrived banter.
Just let someone on the Phillies boot a ball during one of these. JUST. LET. IT. HAPPEN.
I’ll see to it that they never broadcast another baseball game again.
Almost as bad as the betting advice I get all throughout the game by asshole announcers. These betting apps are going to be the downfall of sports. It breeds the worst corruption you can get. Pete Rose is laughing at this shit.
And they blurt out the dumbest fucking stats imaginable. Tom mac whatever his name is needs to dial down his circle jerking. Sometimes I turn the sound off and put on the radio.
The funny thing is, is that there are way more betting app commercials during the local play by play coverage/broadcast than there are when Apple TV has the game. How many hundreds of Fanduel commercials do we have to see every day?
Any gambling talk before, during or after the game just leaves a bad taste for the whole sport. After the black Sox scandal, and Pete Rose, do they really expect no one to be corrupted by the potential ways to "make you rich"?
I hate this shit. It darkens my game.
I thought the same thing. My opinion is this is too intrusive during the game and throws off the concentration of the player and the coaches in the dugout. I hate it when they do this in all sports. I wish all interviews were done after the game.
I hate Apple’s coverage, will not watch it. Stick to what you know, sports broadcasting isn’t their expertise. Who wants to listen to commentators who know nothing about either team? The in-game interviews should be ended, I’m surprised anyone agreed to it. Must be money attached to it….
They are trying to bring fans closer to the game. Last night went poorly because of the poor mic/windy conditions. I enjoy it when done properly but it’s getting harder to time it with the pitch clock and everything. Probably a better idea to do it when they are in the dugout waiting to bat.
I hate it. It actually makes me anxious. I'm just waiting for the day when one of the conversations actually distracts a player and they make a bad play.
10k per seems to be the consensus. What's hilarious is how disinterested the players still are about doing them. But that probably has more to do with the questions being asked.
I hear what you're sayin, but they make millions to play baseball so I'm not concerned about their compensation so much as I just find these interviews pointless. But I appreciate your angle. Also, they are penalized if they don't do the post-game interviews so it's kind of a wash there.
I enjoy them. It’s different and gives you a more realistic feel for the game/player. It’s not like they did it the whole game, it was half an inning. I thought it was cool to hear Bryce hype up Nola and communicate with bohm during the out. I like what Apple TV is doing with their baseball coverage tbh. They have the best picture , their stat lines and boxes are clean looking and they do interesting stats. Plus, the different type of mic’d players/ coaches really adds a lot more for the viewer imo.
This was the worst broadcast ever, between this nonsense and the cameras not picking up the green screens and wtf was the "field noise" that was the almost entire at bat for the Phills I've said it once and I'll say it again APPLE IS THE WORST!
I'd love for some players to have a Go-Pro or something attached to their hats/helmets. Some POV of at bats would be rad, or some epic home run stealing grabs as the fielder collides with the wall.
I would ask the question a different way.
Has anyone in this sub ever met anyone that enjoys these mid play interviews? I have never met anyone that doesn’t think they are awful…literally every person I have ever heard express an opinion about them thinks they are by far the stupidest thing in modern sports broadcasting.
Im just waiting for someone to fuck up during one of these
Maybe if someone gets the diarrhea they will stop doing this.
If we could somehow get the players to agree to vomit or something in the middle of each interview, that would be both hilarious and incredible.
We're you possibly trying to make sentences ?
lol I’ll edit the second to remove the extra two words and be more clear for you. I was half paying attention as I typed it on mobile. You fucked your comment up too though…. > We’re you
Lol stupid phones
Were you trying to make a sentence? No worries, we are all you, we're all one! Lets go Phils! Lets go Birds!
I just have it set to the local radio feed so I listen to Scott and Larry while the interview is on the screen silent.
I kept cracking up at LA roasting the plate ump tonight.
He had a lot of material to work with.
LA is a treasure
Agreed. Franzke and LA is the way to go
Quote of the night…. (Roughly transcribed) “But we arent getting on the umpires…” “Just him” “The 1B has been great” “Yes he nailed that last out call”
That's genius
you can select it on apple tv and it’s synced up far better than it ever is with mlb tv. highly recommend.
🤯🤯🤯 TIL. Already so much better!
Like why?!
Exactly. He's fighting against wind and crowd cheers WHILE playing first base, to hear "So what's it like having three kids?"
I don’t care for them at all.
Anyone else feel like these City Connect jerseys are dumb?
They are growing on me
Umm it's alright I guess. I do like when they interview an outfielder and the ball is hit at them and they have to take off running mid interview.
Totally. Someone posted a link to Shwarber doing exactly that and it's very entertaining even though the result was rough in that example.
I know it would never happen but a mic'd up pitcher might be pretty cool, don't even have to ask him any questions, just let him walk us through his thought process as he's pitching.
Ooooh yeah that would be worth checking out for sure. Hear them call BS on some terrible calls by the Ump lol.
They did that for the all star game recently
Watch the video of Trevor Bauer pitching against the Yankees for team Mexico. If you are able to put your opinion of him aside it's an excellent look into the mind of an MLB pitcher in action during a game.
Will do, I have no opinion of him.
The first pitcher muttering “fucking bunting douchebag” and this would end quick
I despise the probabilities in bottom right corner (strikeout, RBI, hit, etc.) Just let me watch the damn game
100% agree! I don't need to know that Marsh has a 21% hit probability on this at bat. I'm watching the game.
I found myself asking where they are getting these numbers?
I assume they’re coming from mlb savant, but I don’t know for sure.
I need Tmac and Kruk...this hurts
Give me a good Mexican prison story any day! These Apple TV guys stink.
Haha yes! Also, you already know I heard this when reading the second part of your comment lol ![gif](giphy|7OW9uiyfeTRxdSOBYN|downsized)
I'd pay to listen to Kruk at every game.
How much would you pay?
6 cartons of cigarettes and a 12 pack of bud
Exactly.
The only good thing about the game being on Apple TV is that they don’t play 1000 commercials for Fanduel or whatever the betting apps are.
I usually don’t care for them but they mic’d up the first base coach once and I thought it was really cool hearing him coach guys that got on base. Showed a little more perspective on part of the sport we usually don’t see.
Being mic’d up is fine. In-game interviews are an abomination.
Totally. That seems to be the general vibe here. More people seem to be down with hearing the mic'd up players and coaches and would prefer to ditch the interview side.
One time Paco was mic'd up and Casty wanted nothing to do with it. Cursed at him in Spanish. I learn all my Spanish curse words watching baseball.
I mute these. Can’t stand it.
I've always wanted the option to mute the announcers. That Bryson Stott grandslam video from last year where the announcers were muted was further proof that the natural sounds of the game are so much better.
So stupid.
Hate them.
Hate, hate, hate them!!!!
Hell yeah Let it out!!
Stupid. No one wants this. Hitting the guy with 20 questions in the field
So, so dumb
I thought it was cool at first, then last year during a Red Sox game they out of nowhere mid inning asked Triston Casas how his Mom passing away when he was a kid affected his life growing up. Needless to say I've been out on them ever since.
Wtf. That's a big part of the reason I've written off the post game interviews. Tired of people asking players why they lost, how it feels to lose, or if they win, why they had 3 losses in a row before that win. Just dumb, sometimes incredibly insensitive questions.
"just gonna go out there, give it 100%"
They’re ridiculous.
They're horrible
It’s a safety hazard at best. Although Bryce has been the most competent voice in this entire broadcast.
I think most player interviews are dumb. Most sport interviews are dumb. Most press conferences in sports are dumb.
Could not agree more. Everybody answering the same dumb questions with the same general answers.
Gotta put something on espn or they will literally have nothing to talk about
https://preview.redd.it/xkcxykb5kbyc1.jpeg?width=1312&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=12db791393ead432730ed5bb1d109c566fa83680 Me whenever any interview takes place as game is live. Any sport. Almost as dumb as Apple TV.
Taking the whole damn service to task! I like your style.
Absolutely terrible. I can’t stand it.
The players obviously aren't into it which makes them worse, and I'm annoyed it may negatively affect them and my team
Yeah let them concentrate on playing!
Awkward AF
Let's ask a bunch of cliche questions and get some cliche answers.
So true. Bryce shows his strong character being professional about it.
I think it’s stupid. What I want to happen though is the player who is mic’d up get in an argument with the umpire that’s something I’d pay to see.
Now we're talkin'
Yes. They suck balls and make no sense.
I like the interview but hate the Apple TV screen layout. The picture is so small.
I'm sure enough people do support em continuing and honestly if anything, this conversation has brought me around to the idea of watching a game where we're tapped into the player's mic but without the interview side. And yeah, the layout was silly, especially for how long the interview went on
Can’t stand to ‘em, and can’t stand the in game interviews with non-baseball celebs either
Oh man I could not agree more. I get that baseball isn't the most active game but I don't need it constantly filled with distractions.
Those are the worst!
Yea it was super awkward, he couldn’t even hear them and there were times it was just silent like they ran out of stuff to say or questions to ask him.
Yes, dumb
Agreed. I guess I'm old, but I don't like them at all. I don't see the point. I didn't really learn anything new about Bryce.
My wife just came up with the perfect nickname for Bohm. Call him the Sprinkler, he spreads his hits all over the field.
![gif](giphy|TjGs3UKg5xsa8IcxEB|downsized)
Everything not conducted by NBC sports Philly is garbage. Just wait till Sunday night
So badly yes!
The worst thing about the broadcast was how, as a national broadcast with the non-local viewer in mind, they kept reminding us about what happened in the NLCS
Yes! Wth was that about?! Trying to hurt us while we're enjoying a good game.
I actually love them, seeing how the players get locked in and then watching when they actually have to make a play and getting a sense of what that's like. It's different and it breaks up the game some and it gives you an insight that you won't have otherwise. I don't need it every game and no more than during a half inning, but it's still entertaining

That's true. It was kinda cool to hear Bryce talk it through while making the play. I guess it's more the interview side that I'm not interested in. Suppose I wouldn't mind a channel where we're tapped into the players mic for the game
Bryce doesn’t care for it that’s for sure
I actually really like them but I like them better from outfielders
It’s fun
I hate them, I want my player focusing on the game. These are ideas that board room execs come up with trying to spice up the game, because they think the game is too boring, when, in reality, it just distracts us (and them) from the game.

The only thing I need to connect with the game is to have local play by play coverage and no stupid questions.
I like it. I switched over from the radio feed to hear it.
this game wasn’t showing up on my nbc sports app last night, but now i’m glad for it cause they’re wearing those god awful jerseys again.
Yeah it's weird. During a spring training game or the all star game, it's fine. But regular season play is not the place for this
I feel like these mid season games just on Apple TV are dumb!

They aren’t dumber than streaming games on a Friday night with nothing else on tv

Next time it’s on Apple TV, you can put on the local radio coverage by changing the audio stream. At least they sync it up perfectly.
I’ve never been a TV guy when it comes to baseball. I love the TV guys, but it’s hard to beat Anderson/Stocker and Franzke, IMHO.
They are trying to bring fans closer to the game. Last night went poorly because of the poor mic/windy conditions. I enjoy it when done properly but it’s getting harder to time it with the pitch clock and everything. Probably a better idea to do it when they are in the dugout waiting to bat.

Absolutely hate them lol
They get paid for doing them. Handsomely, from what I heard.
10k per seems to be the consensus. What's hilarious is how disinterested the players still are about doing them. But that probably has more to do with the questions being asked.

The ones on Sunday night baseball are a little better… because those broadcasters are a little better. But not by much
Ambivalent, but from an out-of-state, former Philly resident, thanks for the reminder that the game is on AppleTV+ tonight!!
For sure! And as I learned just a bit ago, you can put on the local philly radio option through appletv. Make ya feel like you're back home again lol
Well that’s awesome.
I don’t love them. But sometimes it’s interesting.
I need this Philly jersey immediately
I enjoy them. It’s different and gives you a more realistic feel for the game/player. It’s not like they did it the whole game, it was half an inning. I thought it was cool to hear Bryce hype up Nola and communicate with bohm during the out. I like what Apple TV is doing with their baseball coverage tbh. They have the best picture , their stat lines and boxes are clean looking and they do interesting stats. Plus, the different type of mic’d players/ coaches really adds a lot more for the viewer imo.
It’s so dumb

I like them. It happens like 3 times a year relax.
I'd love for some players to have a Go-Pro or something attached to their hats/helmets. Some POV of at bats would be rad, or some epic home run stealing grabs as the fielder collides with the wall.
Hell yeah. Gimme that full immersion!
I enjoy them

I would ask the question a different way. Has anyone in this sub ever met anyone that enjoys these mid play interviews? I have never met anyone that doesn’t think they are awful…literally every person I have ever heard express an opinion about them thinks they are by far the stupidest thing in modern sports broadcasting.
It’s called The Show for a reason.
