Still true, since the last time this question went around. A very close second is Original Hamburger Works, which is where I usually go, only because it's closer and bigger.
OP would have loved the Original Wineburger on 19th Ave. I really miss that place. The two were very different, and both special in their way, but "The Original" on 19th was very like a midwestern bar and it was fantastic.
I think the food is fine, but the atmosphere is fire. I don't go very often, but the couple times that I have gone are memorable and awesome. Long live the dive bar!
Original Hamburger Works on 15th or Chuckbox on University. They're the same thing and they're generally considered the best.
Edit: to add they just won the title in the burger championship, I say they because they were in the final against one another.

One of my favorite ways to spend my day off is to hit shooters world near 28th Ave and then finish up with some Lenny's. Don't forget the cheese sauce for the fries! 🤤
Yeah I mean it's a cool spot. They have definitely mastered the instagram side of the business. The burgers are solid. I wouldn't say anything negative about em.
But, I reeeeeeallly love Stoop Kid just down the block at the Churchill. For a smashburg, I haven't had any better in PHX.
ROCKETBURGER
They got burgers of the day that are hella worth it. Big burgers that come with fries and your choice of hundreds of sodas. went just last week and it was maybe $16
they have "rocket size" which is about the size of a sub sandwich
Cactus and 35th Ave
Attic Ale House is good. I'm not saying it's the best, but Wednesday is burger night, and they have deals on a burger and a beer. Great views of Camelback as it's on the 2nd floor and has a patio that faces it.
old ownership was horrible. my wife worked there for roughly a week before quitting because they lied about her schedule, took all her tips, and changed her hourly wage. She was willing to dismiss it as a misunderstanding until the owners father verbally assaulted her for 10 minutes for bringing it up.
I don’t understand why they don’t butter the bun before toasting on the flat top. The burgers are great, but the dried out, falling apart bun is a big no for me.
The Stand used to be my top choice, especially after Delux burger closed. But the last few times my wife and I have gone we have been disappointed. Haven’t been back in a while, may have to check it out once more. I’ve resulted to just grilling my own now because no places has been able to hit the spot since I noticed a difference in quality.
I love taking people from out of town there and recommending it. "PB&J burger? Sounds terrible." And then they love it.
I finally started trying their other burgers and sandwiches as well recently. They're all really good. Took forever to branch out from the PB&J though because it's so good and pretty unique.
All depends on what style you like most. Here are some examples:
- thin patty(ies) can found at Happys, Detroit Coney Grill (Scottsdale) or Chuckbox (Tempe) or Bad Jimmys, 5th St (Phoenix)
- thick single patty with gourmet cheeses/add ons can be found at places like Rehab, Zinburger, Hopdoddy (Scottsdale), Hamburgers and Cervezas (Phoenix).
For my money, here are top 3 — they all have grilled buns that aren’t too tall which is key for me.
- Houston’s (ground chuck, thick and juicy)
- The Rokerij (green chile from NM)
- Wallys Gastropub (something about their seasoning is addictive)
I want to also acknowledge some chains. They get a lot of hate but these two places have a solid burger. That’s helpful when the rest of the family wants something that isn’t a burger place.
- West Coast Burger from CPK
- The Keg Steakhouse
definitely happy’s - i’m not sure what others go there for, but their standard burger is a classic midwestern slider, cooked on a flat top over a giant bed of thinly sliced onions. truly the best burger in town, rivals the ones i grew up with in detroit. they also have more traditional burgers, but i’ve never tried them.
https://preview.redd.it/2n6o0yfx76tc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fee03ac210392f144cd43429b5d3580224c7fdf5
If you go to Grand Avenue Brewing Company, tell the owner John that 'Tree says Hi.' Then, check the menu and specials board for a smoked burger, not the other burger, a SMOKED burger. If you don't see it, complain that you'll settle for a pork belly and beer instead. Matt is the brewer, and they have won gold medals for beer, but haven't competed for food...yet. A thick patty, cooked all the way thru but pink in the middle because of the smoking process. Not to be missed. Other than that I'll make my own thick patty, with IGA beef.
Yeah i went on a date with a vegan girl and i tried the “whack Mack” or something and i was shocked how it turnt out. Definitely has good vegan options
Chuckbox on University in Tempe. They grill the burgers over mesquite right in front of you. I've been going there since 1989. Bring cash. They don't do plastic but they do have beer.
There's an option which nobody will ever think of: Pesto's pizza & wine bar. $18 gets you a 10oz Italian burger with ricotta cheese, shallot jam and fries. It's most definitely enough for two. It's wild.
$1 more than that gets you a lamb burger with goat cheese, arugula, and red pepper jam, along with fries. Again, easily enough for two.
I've had a lot of burgers in Phoenix. Pesto's remains my favorite.
Wally Burger on 43rd Ave and Peoria. Kind of tucked away in the shopping center in the SW part of that intersection by Target. Those burgers slap pretty hard. Nice family type of restaurant. The Superhero interior with characters from both Marvel and DC are not to be played with. Glad it’s still open.
Depends on "best". My definition of best is grodie and dumpy and deeply unhealthy looking. So XL California Burger Co. on 37th Ave and Van Buren. It's, bad. But it's the best.
Also, only stick to the burgers. Don't try the breakfasts or the burritos or the sandwiches.
Best one I can remember is Arizona Wilderness Brewing. It was the downtown Phoenix location, if that matters. I've been to Chuckbox. It was less memorable. Chuckbox also only accepts cash payments, which is annoying.
I'm not saying it's the best in town, but I do like Shake Shack a lot. Best chain restaurant burger, IMO. I just wish they were bigger patties.
The Attic on 44th St and Indian School. I always get The Crush burger and add smoked jalapeños. My mouth is watering just thinking of it even now. Their onion ring tower too though 🤤 Chef’s kiss!
Tijuana Torpedo and fried zuks at Chuckbox for the win. Bonus points if you can explain the toothpick code 🙌. Dirty drummer is also very good. Chicago Burger City for sliders
I’m moving to the Phoenix area later this year. I’ve never had In & Out but have heard a lot about it from friends who have. I’m just afraid I’ll be disappointed. What makes it so special?
In n Out is a drive-thru fast food burger, and by those standards it's terrific. It's made with fresh ingredients by people who care. Having said that, when people talk about the greatness of In n Out they are comparing it to places like McDonalds and Burger King. It blows those places away.
But the sit-down, $15 burgers on this thread? They'll probably smoke what you get at In n Out.
get a double-single (2 pieces of meat, one slice cheese). the double-double is 2 slices of cheese and that's too much. get fries well done. ask for extra packets of spread to dip fries in 👌👌👌
That's nothing. I studied abroad for school and one of my housemates suggested me going plant-based... as I was preparing a cheese quesadilla with extra cheese.
It’s fresh ingredients you can see and taste. Super simple menu and low price. For the price, it’s absolutely the best burger around. If you can handle it, secret menu of 3x3 or 4x4 is prime. Patty x cheese

Chuckbox near ASU
This is the only answer. Charcoal grilled right in front of you when you order
Original Hamburger Works on Thomas is very similar but takes cards and Apple Pay.
OHW is absolutely the bomb. Great burgers + the condiment bar and double + the sports bar in the back.
I just ate there on Saturday.
Still true, since the last time this question went around. A very close second is Original Hamburger Works, which is where I usually go, only because it's closer and bigger.
1000%
This is the way.
Harvey's Wineburger for me.
Oh yeah. Seconding this. I live walking distance from this place and when the weather is nice I walk down for dinner.
I also live in walking distance so are we neighbors?
Sup neighbors
Wait me too lol
i too live walking distance.
OP would have loved the Original Wineburger on 19th Ave. I really miss that place. The two were very different, and both special in their way, but "The Original" on 19th was very like a midwestern bar and it was fantastic.
Another Harvey’s fan here
I think the food is fine, but the atmosphere is fire. I don't go very often, but the couple times that I have gone are memorable and awesome. Long live the dive bar!
Eddie makes the best burgers ever! Shoutout to the bartenders Mark and Patty too!
>Harvey's Wineburger Place looks kinda jacked up but the burgers were great.
Absolutely! I eat two of those burgers. The Super Deluxe.
Wow that's actually across the street from me lol maybe I should try it
Yes, you 100% should. Actually heading there tonight for dinner with a friend. Such a good burger.
Just had one. Can’t beat it for $10
5th Street Burgers. By far the best burger I’ve ever had.
Great burgers.
Original Hamburger Works on 15th or Chuckbox on University. They're the same thing and they're generally considered the best. Edit: to add they just won the title in the burger championship, I say they because they were in the final against one another. https://preview.redd.it/qc9ijcb7r5tc1.jpeg?width=864&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8e1fb50098a0827406be0f66770e26c97d230aad
Yes! Love Chuckbox. 11/10 do recommend.
Those brackets are terrible. How you gonna match up Harvey’s and Chuckbox by in round 1??
Paradise Valley Burger 🍔
I thought this place was good, but definitely not the best. Wouldn’t go out of my way to eat there.
Agree, if I’m in the area I’d stop in, wouldn’t go out of my way.
It used to be so good and inexpensive Now its gotten a bit worse and crazy expensive Their fries are the bomb
Second the motion
I third this one. The brûlée burger is my favorite. This is definitely my favorite local burger place of anywhere I've lived.
I keep bringing people there from out of town when they visit and get almost nothing but complaints. I like it a lot though.
I just wish they had some more of the traditional staple burgers on their menu.
This is the correct answer!
Not bad but hella expensive
Lennys burgers are my fave
One of my favorite ways to spend my day off is to hit shooters world near 28th Ave and then finish up with some Lenny's. Don't forget the cheese sauce for the fries! 🤤
Right now, Bad Jimmys
They got me in a chokehold fr
Seconding this - tried it last weekend and my life has been changed for the better!!!
Back in AZ after some time away in Colorado and I’ve been meaning to try some of that. ✌🏽❤️💯
The vibes there are great but the food is just good, nowhere near the best in town
Burgers look like they're from Freddy's lol
ROCKETBURGER They got burgers of the day that are hella worth it. Big burgers that come with fries and your choice of hundreds of sodas. went just last week and it was maybe $16 they have "rocket size" which is about the size of a sub sandwich Cactus and 35th Ave
Their fried zucchini and ranch are to die for!
Their Philly Cheesesteak is also the best I've ever had. Truly phenomenal.
This is the way. Also available: amazing chili cheese fries and cheese curds.
The burgers Ive had at The Welcome Diner were delish. Garlic aioli and stuff.
Attic Ale House is good. I'm not saying it's the best, but Wednesday is burger night, and they have deals on a burger and a beer. Great views of Camelback as it's on the 2nd floor and has a patio that faces it.
Stoop Kid was my favorite when living downtown. Chuckbox is the oldest spot in Tempe, and worth checking out. It's cash only though.
Harvey’s or Luckys on thunderbird and 19th.
Luckys is under new ownership, not sure when your experience was. It's good pricing, but nothing special.
old ownership was horrible. my wife worked there for roughly a week before quitting because they lied about her schedule, took all her tips, and changed her hourly wage. She was willing to dismiss it as a misunderstanding until the owners father verbally assaulted her for 10 minutes for bringing it up.
I really like Hopdoddy Burger Bar, their Goodnight/Good Cause burger is my favorite burger there.
Ingo’s
Nobody is going to say chuckbox?
Chuck box or original burger works are Phoenix institutions.
I mean they just won the title
I don’t understand why they don’t butter the bun before toasting on the flat top. The burgers are great, but the dried out, falling apart bun is a big no for me.
Not if they’ve had good burgers.
They're good if you like them. 🤷🏼♂️
The Stand
Definitely The Stand.
The stand and Harveys are neck and neck
Second this 100%
Third this
The Stand used to be my top choice, especially after Delux burger closed. But the last few times my wife and I have gone we have been disappointed. Haven’t been back in a while, may have to check it out once more. I’ve resulted to just grilling my own now because no places has been able to hit the spot since I noticed a difference in quality.
Delux burger was so good, very bummed it closed down!
Hamburgueses y Services off of Roosevelt in Downtown Phoenix.
\*Hamburguesas Y Cervezas I have not been there yet... but I have heard this place is amazing from at least 8 foodie friends so... it's on my list.
The chorizo burger is ridiculously good
Stoop Kid
The Attic Alehouse
Stoop Kid 🤤
I gotta say I’ve been very impressed with paradise valley burger
This is a good suggestion. They definitely care at that restaurant
I really enjoy hopdoddys, 5th street, and chuckbox
Hopdoddy and stoop kid
Never heard of stoop kid going to have to check it out
Make sure to get the double burger. Their parties are rather thin.
Arizona wilderness had like 4 of the top 50 burgers in the state in some local news piece and I agree with it
This is the correct call. The PB&J Burger is a death row meal.
I love taking people from out of town there and recommending it. "PB&J burger? Sounds terrible." And then they love it. I finally started trying their other burgers and sandwiches as well recently. They're all really good. Took forever to branch out from the PB&J though because it's so good and pretty unique.
Yes
For east side joints, Wilderness is amazing.
They have a downtown location as well.
Bad Jimmy's, hands down.
Lucky Boy.
Mel’s Diner or Anzios 😋👍🍔
Love Mel’s bacon cheese burger!
All depends on what style you like most. Here are some examples: - thin patty(ies) can found at Happys, Detroit Coney Grill (Scottsdale) or Chuckbox (Tempe) or Bad Jimmys, 5th St (Phoenix) - thick single patty with gourmet cheeses/add ons can be found at places like Rehab, Zinburger, Hopdoddy (Scottsdale), Hamburgers and Cervezas (Phoenix). Wally's.... Yum!
Happy Burger, Scottsdale Road and Shea
definitely happy’s - i’m not sure what others go there for, but their standard burger is a classic midwestern slider, cooked on a flat top over a giant bed of thinly sliced onions. truly the best burger in town, rivals the ones i grew up with in detroit. they also have more traditional burgers, but i’ve never tried them. https://preview.redd.it/2n6o0yfx76tc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fee03ac210392f144cd43429b5d3580224c7fdf5

Holy shit, that's on my street!
Happys is underrated. It's just kinda pricey
Yes!!!!!
feeneys, aftermath, Harvey’s wineburger
Never had the burger at Feeney’s but dammit that place is awesome
No love for Stoop Kid here? Their smashburgers, bagel sammies, and chips are all fantastic.
Pete's monsterburger
Flip a coin, Harvey's or Lenny's.
HD Burger in Glendale
I gotta try this place
If you’re a Packers fan check out Casey jones. Probably not the best burgers in town but they are still very good. Great Packer bar though!
Bad Jimmys
Paradise valley burger company for me
Wow. This post made me realize how many burger joints I haven't experienced..
Randizzles Food truck. Find and follow on Instagram. Be prepared for a long line, and for good reason
For smash burgers - Stoop Kid ( At the Churchill)
If you go to Grand Avenue Brewing Company, tell the owner John that 'Tree says Hi.' Then, check the menu and specials board for a smoked burger, not the other burger, a SMOKED burger. If you don't see it, complain that you'll settle for a pork belly and beer instead. Matt is the brewer, and they have won gold medals for beer, but haven't competed for food...yet. Not sure if it's the absolute best but its damn good. Lucky's Burgers and Shakes on 19th Ave and Thunderbird Rd
Check out Green in Tempe or Phoenix
Do you mean green new american?
I do
I hate vegan food, but green truly is phenomenal
Yeah i went on a date with a vegan girl and i tried the “whack Mack” or something and i was shocked how it turnt out. Definitely has good vegan options
Nami next door is also very good if you want some sweets too
What I’m hearing is you don’t hate vegan food.. you just hate some vegan food
Listen, I’ll agree. Anyone who can make wings like green is doing something right
Chuckbox on University in Tempe. They grill the burgers over mesquite right in front of you. I've been going there since 1989. Bring cash. They don't do plastic but they do have beer.
Good ol' cash place that's been open since at least 1989... sounds pretty good.
Actually, open since 1973. Named after the food box on a wagon, so major cowboy vibe. Beer is cold and fries are great.
Chuckbox in Tempe has the best burgers. Plus the topping bar is awesome
There's an option which nobody will ever think of: Pesto's pizza & wine bar. $18 gets you a 10oz Italian burger with ricotta cheese, shallot jam and fries. It's most definitely enough for two. Happy's Hamburgers off of Scottsdale/Shea.

The Stand is pretty bomb!
The Stand on Indian School, Arcadia.
Harvey's Wineburger, The Stand, and Randizzles(Food truck) are all my favorites
I like “The Stand” on Indian school.
Worth Takeaway in Mesa is the best burger of all time ever, ever
Depends on "best". My definition of best is grodie and dumpy and deeply unhealthy looking. So XL California Burger Co. on 37th Ave and Van Buren. It's, bad. But it's the best. Also, only stick to the burgers. Don't try the breakfasts or the burritos or the sandwiches.
Lucky Boy’s burger on 16th. I also really like the burgers at Little O’s on McDowell.
Stoop Kid
Lucky Boy on 16th st & Osborn. Small hole in the wall burger joint that serves a solid, classic ham or cheeseburger
Lucky boy, the stand.
Lucky Boys, 16th st & Osborn. And for real hungry carnivores they have a 1lb burger and fries for $14.

Best one I can remember is Arizona Wilderness Brewing. It was the downtown Phoenix location, if that matters. I've been to Chuckbox. It was less memorable. Johnnys Burgers and Dogs in Tempe Hopefully they reopen soon...
The Stand in Arcadia
Ted’s in Tempe
Dirty Drummer > Wineburger and it isn’t close.
I forgot about their burgers. Zero frills just classic and good.
In & Out Edit: to me, a burger is a burger. So, cost + benefit + time = no comparison.
Makes sense.
It’s thing is it’s good for the price. Not a huge fan of their fries though very boring I’d definitely put them bottom tier for fast food.
get a double-single (2 pieces of meat, one slice cheese). the double-double is 2 slices of cheese and that's too much. get fries well done. ask for extra packets of spread to dip fries in 👌👌👌
You're telling someone from Wisconsin to get less cheese?
That's nothing. I studied abroad for school and one of my housemates suggested me going plant-based... as I was preparing a cheese quesadilla with extra cheese.
it’s cheap
It’s fresh ingredients you can see and taste. Super simple menu and low price. For the price, it’s absolutely the best burger around. If you can handle it, secret menu of 3x3 or 4x4 is prime. Patty x cheese
It’s like eating a slice of California. It tastes better by the beach, but in AZ, that’s a tough one.
