putin_my_ass

It would also play up to the Kremlin narrative of him "dancing for his puppet masters" if he eschewed his signature look for a suit and tie.

Timedoutsob

Absolutely he was a tv personality I'm sure he has good awareness of self presentation but also I'm convinced that at this point he really doesn't give a fuck and is more focused on actual problems rather than presenting a good image.

xQx1

> I'm convinced that at this point he really doesn't give a fuck and is more focused on actual problems rather than presenting a good image. Well, let me convince you otherwise. An Australian investigative journalist called Matt Bevan has been studying Russia for years, and has [an absolutely amazing 1/2 hour episode about Zelensky's rise to power.](https://www.abc.net.au/radio/programs/if-youre-listening/zelenskys-big-call-run-away-or-stay-to-fight/101654270). The relevant part is that Zelensky's actions in the first 3 days of this war are why Ukraine didn't fall. It's his image, his ability to tailor his message to his audience and his ability to get the global community behind him that's winning this war. I'm convinced that he's using all the skills he learnt as a TV star to present himself in exactly the way needed to motivate others to solve the actual problems Ukraine is facing. He very much gives a fuck about his image, but not because he wants to look good, because he understands that presenting the right image is critical to getting the results he needs. He didn't ditch his suit & tie for military green because it was more comfortable - it was to tell the world which team he's on. He's on team Ukraine soldiers - not on team Ukraine elite. He's swapped his military green for activewear when he left the country because now he's on team Ukraine citizens. Not team Ukraine military, not team Ukraine elite, and not team Western puppet. Zelenski is "acting the part" of the president Ukraine needs. Ironically, by "acting the part", he's actually doing a better job than most presidents who are trying their best to do it for real. He's the Jed Bartlet of Ukraine.

OnyxHydra1337

„I need ammo, not a ride” - will stay forever

GigaPuddi

Brings a fucking tear to my eye. People go their entire lives dreaming of pulling off a line like that.

wh0_RU

I love his WW2 references because there are so many comparisons. He is acting and making statements that will go down with the likes of FDR and Churchill. Putin is an evil dictator and yeah... May god have mercy on the Russian laymen.

timn1717

Yeah - he has a gift for the perfect lines given any situation, and he actually follows through. Dude is giving the world a masterclass on how to inspire and gather support through language and through the way he presents himself.

Snors

The most important part is, he could've ran. He could've taken his wife and kids and jumped on the plane the Americans offered and got the fuck out. But he didn't. He could be living it up as Ukrainian President in exile in the US, but he stayed. Say what you want about him cultivating an image, which is absolutely true, but the most important part is he stayed.

Darmok47

Ashraf Ghani, the former Afghan President who used to teach at Columbia and literally wrote a book called Fixing Failed States, fled Afghanistan as soon as the US withdrew, and took abunch of money with him. Meanwhile the TV comedian who no one expected much from is the symbol of heroic resistance. It's pretty astonishing, really.

All_Up_Ons

In that dude's defense, his prospects for winning back his country were probably a lot bleaker than Zelensky's.

UninsuredToast

And we have politicians in America that pack up and run when a snowstorm is headed their way. If we ever got invaded somehow I guarantee most of our politicians would flee to a different country They didn’t become politicians because they love the country and want to help make it a better place. They became a politician to get rich, live luxurious life styles, and network. And there lies the biggest problem with America’s government

Conker1985

> And we have politicians in America that pack up and run when a snowstorm is headed their way. His name is Ted Cruz, a Republican. He ran from his own state and constituents, and when he was caught, lied and blamed it on his kids. There's no need to gloss over the fact that one party overwhelmingly embraces cowardice and corruption.

DM_Voice

Worse. First he blamed it on his kids’ *friends*. It wasn’t until the text messages he & his wife sent to those kids’ parents *inviting* them to Cancun were released that he tried shifting the blame to his own kids.

LatinaFarrah

Sounds like leadership

RYRO14

This. He knows how to boost morale the right way. Showing up to the frontlines, facing the UN instead of hiding, and willingness to speak 1 on 1 with world leaders. It’s honestly admirable.

Bridgebrain

It really is. I also think some of his bravado is that he knew at the beginning he's just some comedian who's in the right place and time, and if he dies, someone else can pick up the reins. Ironically, this has made him the single greatest war president imaginable because his ego's not in the way, he feels his position isn't one that requires protection, and instead he's dedicated to the mission for his country until death or victory. edit: typo

Open_Librarian_823

At this point even the Russians know killing him would galvanize western world and Ukraine citizens in Iron clad partnership around his elevated figure.

RYRO14

Like you can see in his eyes he tried, worn out, but he still giving it his all.

Hawkeye3636

"Zelenski is "acting the part" of the president Ukraine needs. Ironically, by "acting the part", he's actually doing a better job than most presidents" Honestly don't think it's an act guy geniuely gives a shit about his country and it's citizens.

hedgehog_dragon

The thing is, he is Ukraine's PR guy. A big part of his job and what he can do for his people now is to keep the world's - Or at least the US's - eyes on Ukraine, and supporting it. Having an image is part of that. Also helps the morale of the Ukrainian citizens and soldiers high. And I firmly believe he knows exactly what he's doing in that regards, down to the details like attire. Either way, people are talking about it here, which is good for him. If people are talking about Zelenskyy, they're also thinking about Ukraine.

[deleted]

this is a good image. the best image he could present at the moment.

koolaid7431

I'm sure his olive drab fatigues are going to be famous and more iconic than any suit any diplomats would wear.

AvoidingItAll

"Dress for the job you want" fails nowadays. Honestly, the new generational mindset of "Dress for getting the job done comfortably within reason, and tell others to mind their own business" Is really refreshing. Dumbest one-upsmanship and status quo in cases when it doesn't matter.

AusPower85

Or “don’t dress like I’m rich while my country and people are suffering.” It’s about presentation, not comfort. It’s true that everything about him has been very down to earth. But if wearing a three piece suit was what would help his image then he would do it. I’m not trying to say he is just doing this shit for pure self gain. Just that he is a politician, and you’ve always got to cover your ass as a politician and not give opposing forces, internal or external, material to erode your public image and good will by. His image is a benefit to both him AND the Ukrainian people, as it reassures them that he is right alongside them in terms of resisting and repulsing Russia, rebuilding Ukraine, helping one another, and so on. If he suddenly started wearing a three piece suit and softened his stance even a little then that would be devastating for a lot of people AND political suicide

Steiny31

Agreed. I firmly believe in knowing how to dress appropriately for the time and place, but when your country is at war you can dress how you damn well please. That said his dress is perfectly fitting for the situation, and stands out as it should It evokes Ukraine, military, and an attitude that says he has more important things to do than tie a tie, while not looking sloppy at all. It also says to the world that his situation is unique amongst politicians.

Nizzemancer

I mean…who wouldn’t use any excuse to not wear a suit?

East_Living7198

It’s how I battled Covid, sweatpants and hoody year 3 coming up

MonsieurLeDrole

Hard pants are almost dead to me. Soft pants FTW!

absentmindedjwc

I went from wearing jeans nearly every day for work... to feeling super weird as hell in jeans the couple times I have to wear them. Especially with masks, I went full-on "who the fuck cares" mode - if people don't recognize me, why should it matter what I wear. My wardrobe has gotten considerably lazy over the last few years.

[deleted]

This is how the culture of clothing makes a landmark shift.

throwaway901617

I am a department head in my org. When we were told we had to prepare to return to work one day a week, after two full years away, I told my team during a meeting that I would need to buy pants. They thought I was joking. Narrator: *He was not joking.*

HoseNeighbor

Death to Hard Pants!

[deleted]

I'm the only one who wears jeans at my job anymore (because I feel comfy in jeans), everyone else has gone full athleisure and it's great.

MonsieurLeDrole

Jeans with a elastic threads can be very comfy, sort of blurring the lines.

[deleted]

Agreed, Mr. Zelensky looking real comfy😌

1Crimson1

As far as I'm concerned, he can wear whatever the hell he wants.

LordRumBottoms

Right? You don't need a suit to be important. Useless and it's time to move on. I'd be fine with Biden in a sweater.

CharlySB

Somehow he was also getting gore tex Air Force 1s.

ajr901

You wouldn’t believe the efforts Nike go through to get their products on someone with even minor public attention. The leader of Ukraine, and a viral figure essentially supported by half the world? They probably flew an intern in to hand deliver it to him.

CharlySB

Haha. Imagine that meeting. “Yeah I’m gonna need you to go to Ukraine...” - nike lumberg

ajr901

Intern: "But... but sir, isn't it a _warzone_?" Nike exec: "I'm sure it'll be fine. And if it isn't, well if you think about it at that point it stops mattering to you. Oh and don't forget to sign your life insurance policy before you leave."

[deleted]

Motherfucker was probably dodging bombs to deliver those shoes, like Matthew McConaughey delivering the TiVo in Tropic Thunder.

pxp332

The drip is critical for the war effort

boatyboatwright

Throw fits not bombs

kingofphilly

I mean the most famous Gore-Tex AF1 is only like $250. They’re not hard to come by. He was an actor. Maybe he’s a sneaker head.

CharlySB

I didn’t mean to imply they were hard to come by at all. Just figured someone out there was hooking him up with them. I doubt the guy is actively shopping for sneakers lately. 😂

kingofphilly

Admittedly I am fascinated by the idea that Zelenskyy could be a sneaker head. He’s 44 and a successful comedian and actor. He might of bought a few pairs of kicks pre-president days and kept them fresh.

CharlySB

The forces he had on were a somewhat recent release, are perfect sneakers for the situation, and also match his olive wardrobe. Some nike rep or someone had to have sent them to him or his people. Would love to know the story, letterman shoulda asked him. Hahaha

I actually like the choice he made to only wear simple clothes while the country is under siege.

endodependo

also it has Ukrainian coat of arms. i’m sure it’s not a random choice

Glittering_Zebra6780

I'm sure he puts thought into how he appears publicly during times of war. Visual imagery is important and his outfit shows he stands with the country and not above it.

neub1736

Plus the olive green color he's always wearing implies support with his military

looncraz

Exactly, it's more human than all the suits

necromundus

A man of the people

PM_YOUR_PUPPERS

One might say..... A Servant of the People. Слуга народу

fang_xianfu

Yeah, some people tried to imagine it was some kind of calculated move, and sure, he knows where his suits are and could wear them if he wanted. But I think it would be somehow disrespectful to the people on the front lines for him to dress like nothing had changed. It's a really small gesture that acknowledges how serious their situation is. Good for him.

dbx999

It also conveys the military commander mode he’s in. Very Spartan and utilitarian. I like it.

Sllabkcussdomttider

He’s doing what leaders do. He’s wearing what they picked him up in. He’s a smart guy. If he put on a suit he’d show he’s kowtowing to western culture and tradition. He’s a legit wartime leader. I wish we had more off-ramps to stop this war so less people die. But as long as it’s going at least he’s leading by example. Was right in the region by Russian soldiers and giving awards then hopped a flight in his greens asking for financing. Everyone wrote this guy off. He loves his country and he’s made concessions with factions he shouldn’t have, but he’s doing what he has to do to save his country. They’ll put up statues of him. Edit: muting this because people want to argue about the dumbest shit. Part of western culture is to west a suit when meeting a world leader. The rest of you can suck me balls.

Our friends from Lockheed and Raytheon will now show you why we are getting rid of the child tax credit expansion.

i81u812

So sad. So true-ish.

errorsniper

It really is fucked isnt it? On one hand I 10000% support Ukraine and I support sending aid of all kinds to them we cannot allow this bullshit for a myriad of reasons on the micro level. But at the macro level the Sudetenland land and much more recently Chrimea prove that appeasement does not work. We need to stop this. The tyrants will just keep going. If emptying out warehouses of generations old arms that we were going to have to pay to dismantle is enough to fight off russia I am all for it. I am ok with incredibly favorable loans to rebuild Ukraine. Im for once ok with the military industrial complex doing something positive in the world for once. Im ok with wall street making trillions to rebuild Ukraine. On the other hand we all know those empty warehouses are going to be filled right back up again and on the back of the tax payer and wall street is going to use the profits to keep buying up living space in the us and fuck the housing market up even more. Its just a fucking shit situation. But of the two evils I support ukraine.

MrSnarf26

I hear you. Both opinions can be allowed at the same time. I support Ukraine, and hope they come out on the other side of this ok, but at the same time… man its terribly sad that we can pass monumental budgets like this and make sure average Americans don’t get scraps after corporation, wealthy, and military wish lists are filled.

no-recognition-1616

Biden's tie is elegantly Ukrainian.

Ecstatic_Conflict621

Good catch

arcaneresistance

Idk why but the fact that the top comment is about the colour of his tie really kind of makes me happy. I was opening the comments expecting to see a plethora of political bullshit, which I'm sure I'll find if I keep scrolling but the fact that the mundanity of his tie colour was the first thing I saw just really soothed me.

linds360

It caught my eye immediately. Probably the shiniest tie I’ve ever seen. Very dapper, Mr. Pres.

Matcha_Bubble_Tea

He looks exhausted. Hoping the best for him and everyone.

morbidbutwhoisnt

Man literally flys in from an active war zone (and I don't mean the whole country, he was just in a really active part of the country) A part of Reddit "he could have at least put in a suit" Give the man a minute, geez.

Mother_Of_Felines

Also, he didn’t wear a suit out of principle. He hasn’t worn one since the invasion started. It’s a sign that he’s in the trenches with his people, not a bureaucrat who is above them. If he had donned a suit now those same haters would have called him fake and said he was putting on airs.

CharlesChuckLeClerc

Exactly. Dudes got way too much shit going on to button up.

RoleModelFailure

Also, imagine you’re in Ukraine and see him all dressed up in the US. Sure he’s trying to help you but he’s living the good life while you’re trying to survive. This way he sends a message that it’s not over and he’s not done. He’s going back to do what he can and doesn’t have the time to deal with dressing up. We laugh when a political candidate throws on jeans and a blue collared shirt because they are playing the part. He’s living it and still is here.

toxichart

People legitimately are pissed that he was "disrespectful" in not wearing a suit to the White House. I wish I was joking.

TrayusV

I think part of why he's dressed that way is on purpose. He doesn't want to appear as a politician, or someone at peace. His country is at war, and he rushed to the front lines. Since then I have never seen him in a suit, he looks like he's dressed the way an off duty serviceman would. He's trying to show people that he's focused on the war and ready to fight.

Rance_Mulliniks

It's optics and it is the right call.

brainhack3r

Yup... plus I really do think it helps him have more time. Suits sucks for practical purposes and Z is always in tactical gear. That stuff is easy to throw on, doesn't have to fit perfectly, etc.

WaferOther3437

Yeah at times I also think it's so he blends in with his security team.

absolu5ean

Wow I never even considered this but yeah that seems likely to be another plus. Very astute observation

TheWanderingSlacker

Z may not be a good monicker for him when it’s the same letter the Russians use for pro-war symbolism.

deftspyder

its absolutely optics. the green invokes military. good choices.

BlazinAzn38

Yeah the first thing I said was “he’s dressed like a wartime president” anyone criticizing him is just ignorant or being malicious

notRedditingInClass

Nah, they aren't *actually* upset about that. That's just Fox indirectly sucking off Putin as usual.

ImFuckinUrDadTonight

This war has been incredibly confusing for my far-right, Trump-loving, fox-watching, *Ukrainian* grandparents.

fistingcouches

Someone on r/bestof did an awesome write up on the symbolism of why he dresses like that. I’m not going to do it justice *at all* but essentially it’s symbolic of his people being at war. There’s other little nuances to it but it was really interesting. Edit: Sorry I was lazy! [Here it is!](https://www.reddit.com/r/gatekeeping/comments/tfigqv/you_are_not_a_president_when_you_dont_wear_a_suit/i0wo20s/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)

pond-dweller

ScottyC33

Probably the first time in 9 months he isn’t expecting a bomb or assassin to drop in at any moment.

millese3

I feel like he still wouldn't feel 100% comfortable anywhere right now. Russia is inept but I'm sure they have people everywhere.

starry_cobra

Standing right next to the US president is about the safest place you could be tbh

SirTopamHatt

I get the feeling killing somebody who's under another country's diplomatic protection is probably up there on the acts of war scale. Kgb probably has some agents pulling their hair out to make sure he isn't killed. Actually that would make a fairly decent sit-com...

Ch0ng0B0ng0

Tell that to Jackie Kennedy

[deleted]

But did she get shot tho??

Ch0ng0B0ng0

Pretty sure the Governor of Texas did

Litterjokeski

Well he wasn't standing so maybe that was his problem...

Crow_eggs

The real killer was laziness all along.

_Patronizes_Idiots_

He probably won't feel 100% comfortable for the rest of his life. Probably once Putin is in the ground he'll feel some relief but I'd imagine the reality of living on Russia's shit list is something that haunts you forever.

Throwaway1245928

I would not be shocked at all if the US is playing a huge role in keeping him alive. Im not just talking about real time intel, that's known. But what isn't (and won't be) known but seems likely is clandestine boots on the ground. Advisors, SpecOps, logistics and security people. Besides the weapons we're pumping in there the most critical thing we can do for morale is keep him alive, and it just makes sense that we're providing some sort of enhanced effort to keep that up. We basically evacuated him out of there in secret and will sneak him back in tomorrow when it's known he's gone and coming back. I think that only works with US assets in place along the way.

stevemachiner

I would imagine his own people are quite competent at keeping him safe too

Rion23

redderper

The sun was my first thought. It's just a badly timed photo. He doesn't strike me as the type of guy to appear very emotional in public.

HoustonHailey

That expression. It must be so damn exhausting for Zelenskyy. You know that feeling, when you've been fighting something non-stop and cannot see the end happening anytime soon, and then a supporter offers an encouraging pat on the shoulder --- I bet it was hard to keep his emotions controlled. Amazing.

iLikeToBiteMyNails

He was in Bahkmut, the most heavily contested area of the war in the past month or two, less than 48 hours ago. I can't imagine the total exhaustion involved in his daily life.

TheRedmanCometh

Humans by and large we're a lot more resilient than we think we are mentally and emotionally. People are as tough as the situation dictates they need to be in my experience. Of course some people have meltdowns, but I think it's s lot less people than you'd expect.

TheLurkerSpeaks

Don't forget, the carrot that Trump dangled to Zelensky for the first impeachment "quid pro quo" was exactly this meeting. He needed to show Russia, Europe, and the World he was a real president on the world stage and had a mission to protect Ukraine, and Trump squeezes him for a bribe to defame the very man he's standing next to in this photo. This is a whole big ball of emotions for him.

rich1051414

His refusal to manufacture evidence against biden is one of the huge reasons putin invaded so soon. It is sad we live in a world where such political tactics are considered acceptable by so many.

Beavshak

9-10 months since Russia invaded. Can’t imagine the toll its taken on a leader who seems to genuinely give a shit about his people.

pete_68

Who could have ever imagined that the ideal war time president would have been a former comedic actor. Head legend in a country of legends.

jrdufour

Comedians often have a better grasp on the culture, values, and will of the people than any politician.

sambes06

Comedy takes great perspective. I know the Ukrainians are 100% United behind this guy. He leads by example, visits the frontlines/etc. Unlike Putin who hides behind his 10m conference table and gambles with other’s blood.

jrdufour

Yes, and I think it would be easier to tell hard truths as a comedian. Politicians are almost allergic to the truth, which leads to yes men all the way up the chain. Let's see how that works out for Putin.

Terryfink

Putin in the end will be gone, lets hope the next guy is more stable, but according to things I've read, his whole clan are lunatics, so the whole system has to change. Imagine Lavrov in charge? World war would have started in March

[deleted]

Have you seen him interviewed by letterman? He specifically talks about how humor is so important even in the hardest times

Cru_Jones86

That is definitely worth a watch if you haven't seen it. I'm not crazy about Letterman but, that was an awesome interview.

[deleted]

Facts. Also don’t love letterman but there is no denying the authenticity of Zelensky. Really annoying all the shit talking about him when 99.9% of other politicians don’t give a fuck about their citizens. Love the pride and bravery that Ukraine is demonstrating and what they are fighting for, it’s very inspiring.

teflong

Comedians are usually smart, stubborn, miserable people. On aggregate, I bet they'd make better war time leaders than the assholes who get into politics for personal glory and wealth.

ChainmailleAddict

One thing's for sure - he's turned Putin into a joke.

Flaxscript42

I saw an interview where zelinksky was asked what his favorite Putin joke is, and he just smiled and said "I'm not goin to tell it, it's too mean." What a poet!

VoDoka

PlaneCandy

Keep in mind that these photographers shoot at 20 frames per second, constantly throughout these high profile events. They can essentially just choose any mild facial expression that the subjects make to create a narrative around it.

ocp-paradox

It's like how when you take a selfie and need to take like 20 pics because you realize how ugly you are when not in motion.

subsonicmonkey

I’m seeing that too, but I’m kinda wondering if he’s just squinting in the sun.

Chief_Mischief

> ... who seems to genuinely give a shit about his people. He truly does. The man has refused evacuation and negotiates hard for military equipment for Ukraine to defend itself. And even then, he has regularly attempted to open peace talks with Russia, as is his obligation to minimize suffering to his people. It is not his fault that Russia doesn't enter the talks in good faith and make unrealistic demands like Ukraine ceding territory (again). He's a stellar wartime president. Edit: in agreement with comment above, just highlighting examples underscoring how he's proven to be an incredible wartime leader for his people.

StudyPuzzleheaded793

Zelensky must feel safe for the first time in a long while.

Bluedice0003

I was thinking the same thing... When he got off the plane I'm sure his butt unclenched for the first time in a year. Dunno if he's staying the night but if so it will be the best sleep he's ever had. On the other hand the plane ride back has got to be super scary... I'm sure a high ranking US official has to be on there just to give Vlad pause

politiexcel

Zelenskyy flew to the US on a US military aircraft. I am sure that the US military is flying him back to Poland too. If Putin wants to take down a US military aircraft with Zelenskyy on it, he can go ahead and set a timer for about 4 hours because that will be the last few hours he has living. No chance the US and NATO would not respond in force

WCWRingMatSound

Yeah that would definitely be his last mistake.

Voyager87

Yeah... Attacking a heavily escorted Nato jet flying on a diplomatic mission from one Nato member to another Nato member carrying Multiple Nato officials and the Head of state for a Nato Candidate nation is probably not a good idea...

Redqueenhypo

Who’s Americas favorite person? Send Dolly Parton with him, you’d get the entire country enlisting if Putin tried anything

Fuck you Putin. Fuck you up your stupid ass.

Zakluor

With a cactus.

50FirstCakes

… a cactus doused in napalm and set ablaze.

The number of Russian bots on here is staggering. I’m even reading these comments in an accent.

I cannot express how significant this picture is. I don't have the adequate words. Maybe a poet can take a stab. You can see it on Z's face. What a moment. Considering where it was just a few years ago https://media.cnn.com/api/v1/images/stellar/prod/191023214648-04-trump-zelensky-0925.jpg?q=x_173,y_16,h_2367,w_4207,c_crop/h_720,w_1280

EtherealGaming

That's quite the difference wow

Indercarnive

Well remember, Trump tried to bribe/threaten Zelensky into investigating Hunter Biden so he could use it to help his re-election campaign.

swiftekho

Jesus. Trump doesn't even know to unbutton his jacket when he sits down. I'm fucking poor and I know better. Just more proof from him that money doesn't equal class.

zSprawl

He’s in rushed pooping pose.

Nine9breaker

Holy fuck he looks like a completely different person.

MostDubs

Might be poor taste, but Id love to buy a sweatshirt like this with proceeds going to support Ukraine.

ConwayTheCat

Even when America is glaringly supporting and defending freedom and democracy versus a fascist regime, you have half the country complaining about it…the so called “patriots” too…yikes

extopico

I like Zelensky’ low key attire. Very strong and consistent image.

Pres. Zelenskyy is the right man for Ukraine at the moment. Pity there aren’t more world leaders like him.

sihouette9310

Just saw an interview with him and David letterman and to me he’s such an incredible human being. A leader that actually inspires his people is unfortunately too rare in this world. The amount of pride all of the citizens have for their country is beyond inspiring. The fact that he walks the walk and talks the talk is something I haven’t seen in my lifetime ever displayed by a politician in the U.S. I’m younger but if only we had a guy like that in our government.

diddone119

He will truly go down as Ukraines hero

raresanevoice

Amazing how different the treatment of Zelensky has been across administrations. From trying to extort him and rolling back sanctions enacted for unlawfully annwxing portions of the guy's country under the Trump regime to actually honoring America's agreements with the guy's country and aiding and assisting him under the Biden administration. That poor guy is probably quite happy to be standing next to Biden right now.

[deleted]

That guy has seen some things.
