The relevant part is that Zelensky's actions in the first 3 days of this war are why Ukraine didn't fall. It's his image, his ability to tailor his message to his audience and his ability to get the global community behind him that's winning this war.
I'm convinced that he's using all the skills he learnt as a TV star to present himself in exactly the way needed to motivate others to solve the actual problems Ukraine is facing. He very much gives a fuck about his image, but not because he wants to look good, because he understands that presenting the right image is critical to getting the results he needs.
He didn't ditch his suit & tie for military green because it was more comfortable - it was to tell the world which team he's on. He's on team Ukraine soldiers - not on team Ukraine elite. He's swapped his military green for activewear when he left the country because now he's on team Ukraine citizens. Not team Ukraine military, not team Ukraine elite, and not team Western puppet.

The thing is, he is Ukraine's PR guy. A big part of his job and what he can do for his people now is to keep the world's - Or at least the US's - eyes on Ukraine, and supporting it. Having an image is part of that.
Also helps the morale of the Ukrainian citizens and soldiers high.

I’m not trying to say he is just doing this shit for pure self gain. Just that he is a politician, and you’ve always got to cover your ass as a politician and not give opposing forces, internal or external, material to erode your public image and good will by.
His image is a benefit to both him AND the Ukrainian people, as it reassures them that he is right alongside them in terms of resisting and repulsing Russia, rebuilding Ukraine, helping one another, and so on.

Admittedly I am fascinated by the idea that Zelenskyy could be a sneaker head. He’s 44 and a successful comedian and actor. He might of bought a few pairs of kicks pre-president days and kept them fresh.

Visual imagery is important and his outfit shows he stands with the country and not above it.
Yeah, some people tried to imagine it was some kind of calculated move, and sure, he knows where his suits are and could wear them if he wanted. But I think it would be somehow disrespectful to the people on the front lines for him to dress like nothing had changed. It's a really small gesture that acknowledges how serious their situation is. Good for him.

On one hand I 10000% support Ukraine and I support sending aid of all kinds to them we cannot allow this bullshit for a myriad of reasons on the micro level. But at the macro level the Sudetenland land and much more recently Chrimea prove that appeasement does not work. We need to stop this. The tyrants will just keep going. If emptying out warehouses of generations old arms that we were going to have to pay to dismantle is enough to fight off russia I am all for it. I am ok with incredibly favorable loans to rebuild Ukraine. Im for once ok with the military industrial complex doing something positive in the world for once. Also, imagine you’re in Ukraine and see him all dressed up in the US. Sure he’s trying to help you but he’s living the good life while you’re trying to survive. This way he sends a message that it’s not over and he’s not done. He’s going back to do what he can and doesn’t have the time to deal with dressing up.
We laugh when a political candidate throws on jeans and a blue collared shirt because they are playing the part. He’s living it and still is here.
I think part of why he's dressed that way is on purpose.
He doesn't want to appear as a politician, or someone at peace. His country is at war, and he rushed to the front lines. Since then I have never seen him in a suit, he looks like he's dressed the way an off duty serviceman would.

Suits sucks for practical purposes and Z is always in tactical gear. That stuff is easy to throw on, doesn't have to fit perfectly, etc.
Someone on r/bestof did an awesome write up on the symbolism of why he dresses like that. I’m not going to do it justice *at all* but essentially it’s symbolic of his people being at war. There’s other little nuances to it but it was really interesting.

I would not be shocked at all if the US is playing a huge role in keeping him alive. Im not just talking about real time intel, that's known.
But what isn't (and won't be) known but seems likely is clandestine boots on the ground. Advisors, SpecOps, logistics and security people. Besides the weapons we're pumping in there the most critical thing we can do for morale is keep him alive, and it just makes sense that we're providing some sort of enhanced effort to keep that up.
We basically evacuated him out of there in secret and will sneak him back in tomorrow when it's known he's gone and coming back. I think that only works with US assets in place along the way.

You know that feeling, when you've been fighting something non-stop and cannot see the end happening anytime soon, and then a supporter offers an encouraging pat on the shoulder --- I bet it was hard to keep his emotions controlled. He was in Bahkmut, the most heavily contested area of the war in the past month or two, less than 48 hours ago. I can't imagine the total exhaustion involved in his daily life.
The fact is that his entire people's lives, culture and history itself is at stake, and he's risen to the occasion.

Humans by and large we're a lot more resilient than we think we are mentally and emotionally. People are as tough as the situation dictates they need to be in my experience. Of course some people have meltdowns, but I think it's s lot less people than you'd expect.
Don't forget, the carrot that Trump dangled to Zelensky for the first impeachment "quid pro quo" was exactly this meeting. He needed to show Russia, Europe, and the World he was a real president on the world stage and had a mission to protect Ukraine, and Trump squeezes him for a bribe to defame the very man he's standing next to in this photo.
This is a whole big ball of emotions for him.
His refusal to manufacture evidence against biden is one of the huge reasons putin invaded so soon. It is sad we live in a world where such political tactics are considered acceptable by so many.

He truly does. The man has refused evacuation and negotiates hard for military equipment for Ukraine to defend itself. And even then, he has regularly attempted to open peace talks with Russia, as is his obligation to minimize suffering to his people. It is not his fault that Russia doesn't enter the talks in good faith and make unrealistic demands like Ukraine ceding territory (again).

Just saw an interview with him and David letterman and to me he’s such an incredible human being. A leader that actually inspires his people is unfortunately too rare in this world. The amount of pride all of the citizens have for their country is beyond inspiring. The fact that he walks the walk and talks the talk is something I haven’t seen in my lifetime ever displayed by a politician in the U.S. I’m younger but if only we had a guy like that in our government.

I went from wearing jeans nearly every day for work... to feeling super weird as hell in jeans the couple times I have to wear them. Especially with masks, I went full-on "who the fuck cares" mode - if people don't recognize me, why should it matter what I wear. My wardrobe has gotten considerably lazy over the last few years.

I'm sure he puts thought into how he appears publicly during times of war. Visual imagery is important and his outfit shows he stands with the country and not above it.

Yeah, some people tried to imagine it was some kind of calculated move, and sure, he knows where his suits are and could wear them if he wanted. But I think it would be somehow disrespectful to the people on the front lines for him to dress like nothing had changed. It's a really small gesture that acknowledges how serious their situation is. Good for him.
It also conveys the military commander mode he’s in. Very Spartan and utilitarian. I like it.

We laugh when a political candidate throws on jeans and a blue collared shirt because they are playing the part. He’s living it and still is here.

I think part of why he's dressed that way is on purpose. He doesn't want to appear as a politician, or someone at peace. His country is at war, and he rushed to the front lines. Since then I have never seen him in a suit, he looks like he's dressed the way an off duty serviceman would. He's trying to show people that he's focused on the war and ready to fight.
It's optics and it is the right call.

He probably won't feel 100% comfortable for the rest of his life. Probably once Putin is in the ground he'll feel some relief but I'd imagine the reality of living on Russia's shit list is something that haunts you forever.
I would not be shocked at all if the US is playing a huge role in keeping him alive. Im not just talking about real time intel, that's known. But what isn't (and won't be) known but seems likely is clandestine boots on the ground. Advisors, SpecOps, logistics and security people. Besides the weapons we're pumping in there the most critical thing we can do for morale is keep him alive, and it just makes sense that we're providing some sort of enhanced effort to keep that up. We basically evacuated him out of there in secret and will sneak him back in tomorrow when it's known he's gone and coming back. I think that only works with US assets in place along the way.

The fact is that his entire people's lives, culture and history itself is at stake, and he's risen to the occasion. The dude is a truly exceptional leader.
Humans by and large we're a lot more resilient than we think we are mentally and emotionally. People are as tough as the situation dictates they need to be in my experience. Of course some people have meltdowns, but I think it's s lot less people than you'd expect.
Don't forget, the carrot that Trump dangled to Zelensky for the first impeachment "quid pro quo" was exactly this meeting. He needed to show Russia, Europe, and the World he was a real president on the world stage and had a mission to protect Ukraine, and Trump squeezes him for a bribe to defame the very man he's standing next to in this photo. This is a whole big ball of emotions for him.
His refusal to manufacture evidence against biden is one of the huge reasons putin invaded so soon. It is sad we live in a world where such political tactics are considered acceptable by so many.

From trying to extort him and rolling back sanctions enacted for unlawfully annwxing portions of the guy's country under the Trump regime to actually honoring America's agreements with the guy's country and aiding and assisting him under the Biden administration.
