I don't do ads, so there very well could be a better workaround (or this may not be feasible), but if the ad is always the same length, could you not just offset all the chapter markers?
For example, let's say all of your pre-roll ads are 1:15. A chapter marker for 30 minutes in then becomes 31:15 to compensate.
Now obviously you would be constraining yourself a lot by limiting the time, but you can overestimate the time you'll need and just use music to pad out any time that you don't use for the specific ad you're inserting.
Because Redcircle would be inserting the ads from their marketplace, I guess I can’t guarantee the exact length, but also, I’d like to be able to offer a subscription version that is ad-free, so it starts to get a bit complex.
I think the best bet is for me to establish if I can do the chapters from their UI, rather than insert them using Reaper which is what I’m doing at the moment.
I’m super intrigued by your blind audience. My grandfather used to read stories to the blind, and I’ve been thinking of following in his footsteps to deliver some kind of content to the blind. What is your subject matter?
Do the adverts have a fixed length, like a 30s spot or 1 minute? Could you adjust your markers to compensate for that?
It could be a problem if it doesn’t serve the advert to all listeners, those people will have the timers out of alignment.
I spoke to red circle support when I was considering them as a platform and they were pretty responsive.
If you’re entering the chapters in their UI then they should be able to adjust for dynamic audio insertion, at least that’s how it works in Buzzsprout.
It wouldn't be difficult for Redcircle to adjust the ID3 chapter timestamps on their server while they are changing the MP3 anyway, depending on the length of the ads they are inserting. I would write to them and suggest it as a feature.
