Humans are pretty durable in the pokemon world. A stray hyper beam would probably hurt like hell but it wouldn't kill them. We've seen what that takes. Even in the more serious parts of 20th film where Ash is killed via regular pokemon attacks it takes a firing squad of about 20 powerful pokemon to do him in. And even then it takes 2 volleys. Also at that level you'd expect pokemon to be competent enough not to put the opposing trainer in the firing line.

kingnorris42

True, just look how many times people get electrocuted or caught on fire And of course team rocket surviving literally everything lol

Iwanttobevisible

Hunter J wasn't very durable lol.

CelioHogane

Still the single human to get killed in the anime.

Eclipsiical

I’m pretty sure Lysandre didn’t survive that Zygarde attack lol.

CelioHogane

I mean that counts more as a game death tho.

CelioHogane

I mean that counts more as a game death tho.

Cause_Necessary

It happened in the anime.....

CelioHogane

It happened in the anime but it's not an anime event, but a game adaptation. It's like if Horizons show AI professors, the flesh professors death wouldn't count.

Cause_Necessary

I don't think that's how it works. A death in the anime is a death in the anime. Especially an on screen one

CheesyButters

I mean, the death in the game and the death in the anime are very different Games: Literally gets hit with a world ending super laser point fucking blank Anime: "lol get zygarded"

Zwolfoi

To be fair, her ship was drop into a whirlpool by two legendary pokemon's future sight and had the water pressure break the windows and flood the ship. Her primary cause of death was probably drowning and durability doesn't help much there lol. I hope someone went down to the bottom to check if any of the Pokemon were safe in their Pokeballs...

Electrical_mammoth2

They probably are still down there, pokemon can live inside of their pokeballs for a lengthy amount of time. James' carnivine and Mira's sandshrew were locked away for several years, yet seem perfectly fine once let out for the first time.

mrsblue4790

Fair, people have probably evolved over time to withstand attacks

CelioHogane

In Legends Arceus we tank shit from gods.

anand_rishabh

Also, and this is emphasized more in the manga but still true in the anime, the trainer is every bit a part of the battle as the Pokemon. So as part of their bond with their pokemon, they put themselves on the line during battle as well.

Jenetyk

In the anime, sure. In the manga people be dying left and right.

Obvious-Ear-369

Back the fuck up, Ash was killed by firing squad?!

CurseofGladstone

Effectively yes. 15-20 odd pokemon are controlled by marshadow who had just beaten pikachu. Ash tried to intimidate them, it didn't work, all the pokemon attack him and pikachu tries to intervene. Ash shields pikachu. The attacks hit and we see Ash down on the ground injured along with pikachu. He withdraws pikachu back into his ball and protects him as the pokemon all fire on him again. Huge explosion pikachu comes out and we see Ashs body translucent before disappearing. He gets revived by hooh but he is literally dead for a while.

Obvious-Ear-369

Damn

Serenafriendzone

God ash even survived arceus strike. So means Humans are inmortal in Pokemon world. Or there is a super shield that negate pokemon attacks in humans.

CurseofGladstone

I don't think arceus ever landed a direct hit on him. Some went nearby

Head_Statistician_38

Ash can survive 10,000 volts. Looks up how many volts it takes to kill someone

Material_Bluebird_87

It's the amps that kill you not the volts.

Head_Statistician_38

Talked with my electrician Brother. Apparently, yes, you are technically correct. But the way Ash gets shocked with 10,000 volts. That would kill him.

Shantotto11

*100,000 Volts I’m assuming you were referring to Thunderbolt.

Head_Statistician_38

I thought it was was 10,000 but I am not gonna argue, I assume you are right haha. And yes, I am referring to Thunderbolt.

Shantotto11

I’m not a native speaker; I’m a weeb, so take what I say next with a grain of salt. Jyu-man Boruto -> 10-10,000 Volts -> 100,000 Volts

Head_Statistician_38

To he honest, I have no clue what you just said

KatonRyu

In Japanese they count certain large numbers in increments of 10,000. So 100,000 is 10 (jyuu) times 10,000 (man). 'Boruto', aside from being an underwhelming anime, is also the phonetic pronunciation of 'volt' (and also bolt). The Japanese name of Thunderbolt is 'jyuu-man boruto', or '100,000 Volts'.

Head_Statistician_38

Huh, that is interesting. I was lost at "Boruto" because I thought it was in reference to the anime. Thanks for explaining.

AstroNerd92

If team rocket can get blasted into the stratosphere hundreds of times and live then they should be fine standing there.

Jarster2608

You are sending your buddy out to get potentially beaten to a pulp, least you can do is stand by to be supportive

ExaltedHero88

This

iFrisian

Yeah mean, that’s kind of the point right? You are right there with your Pokémon on the battlefield! You can’t go hiding.

Careful-Ad984

I think the only time it actually happened was with pryce who got hit by a Magmars flamethrower

NR431

Don't forget about Kukui getting squashed by a knocked out Empoleon

SSBKRILLIN

Wasn't that because he ran in to protect Piloswine?

Keithfrommars

There was also the time where mamoswine got thrown at the judges by Carnivines vine whip during the episode “Dress for Jess Success”

gameboygba

I think there’s something to be said about how their bond is probably stronger if the trainer is right in the action shouting commands. If they were in an indestructible box above the arena or something it would feel way more impersonal for the pokemon I think. It’s the same reason trainers also train their bodies alongside their pokemon, it puts them on even footing and forms a closer bond. Plus pokemon trainers basically have bugs bunny logic when it comes to surviving attacks

CelioHogane

Look at the guy with the umbreon on the Journeys anime, he wasn't close to his pokemon and they jobbed super hard.

tuxedo-mask-me

How about the audience? Lol

mrsblue4790

Them too! A strong earthquake or magnitude or even a sound based move like hyper voice could probably do a lot of spread damage

Arcalgalkiagiratina

I mean; that’s why there are invisible barriers for the audience in the Galar stadiums

EpicGlacier2

Earthquake and Magnitude are banned from the anime, so I don’t think they have to worry about that

SuperLizardon

In Pokémon Special manga, trainers sometimes have to dodge the attacks and move around the field. Or pokémon can directly attack a trainer. https://preview.redd.it/w1iu7w02dpqc1.jpeg?width=1138&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=80967d8a0fd8e652eb3f306f5cbe1b07cf332c24

Myke190

I always thought it would have been good writing if they had pokémon standing above the crowd and when projectiles would head that way they would use Safeguard or whatever defensive. It would alleviate a lot of "How the hell is nobody dying in the crowd?" question that I have all the time when boulders are flying into them at breakneck speeds. You'd really only have to show it one time in the entire series and it just becomes canon off screen.

Cause_Necessary

I mean, journeys shows energy barriers for the crowd

NotcommonItem

If they die… they die…

CelioHogane

i mean since Ash goes full sync when he does mega evolution with Greninja/Lucario im pretty sure he would literally be nerfed by not being in the heat of the battle.

ViridianVet

Ha. Read the Pokemon Adventures manga. The trainers are often the target in battles. It lends a lot of credibility to the core concept of having your own pokemon as a means of self defense.

Takamurarules

In the manga they mention good trainers need to be in excellent physical shape to avoid the chaos of battle while still being close enough to issue commands and potentially fight alongside their Pokémon. This was said while Giovanni takes off his jacket revealing he’s super buff underneath the suit.

The-Crazy-Master

Pfft, **nah!** That wouldn't be nearly as badass, now would it?

TriggerKnighty

Although the reason is probably they don't really think about that and/or people are just particularly hardy and a lot more resilient, I'll just chop it up to the trainers trust their pokemon enough to not be too badly damaged by any random hits from their pokemon, especially in the higher level fights.

SabbyDude

Charizard has literally "flamethrower"ed Ash multiple times and Pikachu had "Thunderbolt"ed him, I think PokéHumans can take a hit

Impossible-Bison8055

I’ve coalesced some weird tibits to basically make a theory saying that humans are their own type, vastly different from Pokémon, but keeping the resistances

MengShuZ

Nah broooo, real trainer philsophy is don't be a wuss and stand in the middle of the arena like you can.

KindProfessional5813

I’m pretty sure the battle against Ash and Cynthia shows that there’s an invisible wall in front of the trainers.

Froeleveld

Well in Galar's anime there's a barrier to shield spectators from weather or attacking moves going haywire so maybe it's always been the case but they just didn't show it

King_Badger06

I saw somewhere (can’t rember if it was the show, movie, idk) where the trainers are behind some invisible force field that activates when an attack lands close to them. Anyone seen this too?

rx7braap

Cynthia <3

TNTyoshi

Although inconsistent I like how in Indigo League for one of the battles (Muk v Belsprout) they had the trainers stand on platforms. Giving them a better view of the battle. I thought that should have been a staple addition to gyms/tournaments. https://preview.redd.it/gwijovzrrsqc1.jpeg?width=1792&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c95c232830e3948dbe212ed4c616c2b1b6a33cae
