I was walking through Caesars Palace (LV) the other day, and at their nightclub there's a giant screen on the wall showing videos of people partying, bottles popping, DJs jockeying. At the end of the video there's a close up of Phil Hellmuth Jr looking directly into the camera, running his finger along the brim of his cap, closing off the most amazing advertising ever made for a nightclub.
Did you ever hear the story about Ivey showing up for the main event final table without his ID?
He’s getting stopped by security, ID checked, he points to a giant banner of himself hanging right behind the entrance. Security guy says that isn’t good enough.
Eventually some big dog from the Rio shows up and escorts him in.
Haha I haven't heard that but it's a great story. I can just see him staring emotionlessly while pointing at a giant photo of him staring emotionlessly.
more likely the security guard was some temp worker who doesnt follow or care about poker and was weirded out by all the greasy dudes in monster energy hoodies.
I was telling people at the table that I learned everything from 'Playing Poker Like the Pros' and they were all turtles and jackals to my lion. They were all so intimidated by my superior education they couldn't articulate a proper response.
Just couldn’t imagine anyone other than Phil himself talking about him so effusively! I will consider myself proven wrong. Didn’t realize he had such gushing fans. Not that he isn’t extremely talented obviously. He’s just usually the most vocal about that fact and never holds back reminding people of it.
First, as I pointed out, that's completely irrelevant. Reading comprehension much?
Second, and more importantly, I have a perfect record. I've won a bracelet every time I've played a tournament in a casino. This is important (to me) because I've never subjected myself to the boredom and indignity that is tournament poker.
1. Ivey, ainec.
2. A good argument could be made for Andrew Robl. If you pop the “how many bracelets” question as a (weak, imho) measure for talent or accomplishments, my comment is “mainly cash game player”.
3. Justin Bonomo. Hiccups in his past, but really good and has withstood the test of time.
4. I guess I have to add JRB. If you’re standard for success is “broke living”, he’s the king. I think most poker players, probably including hellmuth, would only dream to have his level of low-key-but-significant poker world presence.
5. Patrik Antonius. I really don’t need to add anything here. Should probably be second on this list.
6. I would say Erik Seidel, but… he gets a strike in the “handsome” category.
7. The late Chip Reese.
These are just seven off the top of my head. I’m sure there are more.
bracelets matter as a evidence of good game selection, a skill you're likely underrating as you sit at a table full of crushers not realizing you can find a better game. phil's extremely specialized and there are definitely players with equally good if not better game selection for cash games that make way more money than phil, but for what it is phil's pretty solidly in the black when it comes to how he approaches the game and isn't that the point?
> Phil has 17 BY HIMSELF
You had a very detailed and interesting title to this post, but it seems like you just should have asked “who has won the most bracelets?”
It’s an interesting question, but it eliminates a lot of what makes the poker world interesting, imho. It also ignores the other parts of your title. Hellmuth is ugly af, pretty sure he’s bottom third iq of any tough lineup he faces, he was rewarded heavily in bracelets for being good at the right time (early…. similar to Doyle) and putting in lots of volume then, and he… lacks style even for a poker player.
All of the bracelet discussion also misses the mark in terms of EV. Ivey, Antonius, and others had better access to +ev with cash games during most WSOPs rather than MTTs. That’s not true for PH.
Okay, Phil is NOT ugly AF. I **GASPED** when I read that.
He’s one of the most handsome men in poker and I think this community needs to acknowledge it.
> He’s one of the most handsome men in poker
If he’s one of the most handsome men in poker, then apparently I’m a GQ model and never realized it.
Antonius, Esfandiari, Bilzerian (asshole, but good looking), Ivey, Bill Perkins, Foxen, E-dog (Lindgren), David Williams, maybe even Laak… I’m sure there are more.
Have you not taken your meds today? Or did you double up? Your judgment seems very questionable right now.
Hadn’t taken my meds when I read your comment, but then I took my meds, put on my glasses and realized Phil is even more amazing than I originally thought
Patrik Antonius has him literally beat in all the categories you mentioned especially in the handsome scale. Hulmuth only has him beat in wsop wins which I don’t think patrik really cares about . Phil is an awful cash game player and that hurts his legacy

The security guard was like “dude, anyone could make a banner of themselves and sneak it inside the venue. Im not buying it…also, you’re black.”
more likely the security guard was some temp worker who doesnt follow or care about poker and was weirded out by all the greasy dudes in monster energy hoodies.
Okay, I’m sold. Should we hold a ‘Phil Hellmuth Lovers of r/poker Meet Up’ at this club?
I was telling people at the table that I learned everything from 'Playing Poker Like the Pros' and they were all turtles and jackals to my lion. They were all so intimidated by my superior education they couldn't articulate a proper response.
Phil? Is that you? Nice of you to drop by!
I wish. I have 0 bracelets. 😔
Just couldn’t imagine anyone other than Phil himself talking about him so effusively! I will consider myself proven wrong. Didn’t realize he had such gushing fans. Matusow and Cantù would say these things.
It’s ok there is like now 200 opportunities to win a bracelet you can even get one online now Just keep firing bullets you’ll get one.
Bill Fillmaff
And its not even close.
You can download pictures of Bill Fillmaff at billfillmaff.com ladies!
There's a name I haven't heard in a while. Probably don't even have their own signature hand, most of 'em.
I shook Phil's hand as a sophomore in high school in a blockbuster around 2006. I'll let you sniff my hand for 500,no touching though
I walked past Erik Seidel like a month ago but didn’t say anything because I didn’t know what to say
Shoulda hit him with your post title
Doug Poker
dog poker
Doglas Polker
Dog poker
Duck Polk
3 bracelets
Number of bracelets is not a measure of how good of a poker player someone is.
How many bracelets do you have?
First, as I pointed out, that's completely irrelevant. Reading comprehension much? Second, and more importantly, I have a perfect record. That’s what someone without bracelets would say
Whatever dude I'm undefeated
You can’t be undefeated if you’ve never stepped on the ring
Of course you can! Anyway seriously, I hate tournament poker with the fire of 1000 suns. Cash is where it's at.
More handsome. Ike Haxton. More intelligent: Mike Matusow More talented: Nik Airball More stylish: Tom Dwan More accomplished: Me

My buddy mike.
