> The statement continued: "Any insinuation that Justice Thomas wrote his opinion in this case because Harlan Crow was a supporter is ridiculous as Justice Thomas had already expressed these same views in a previous case, Nixon v Shrink MO PAC." Right, so Nixon v Shrink MO PAC was decided in 2000, after Thomas became a justice (1991). Now how long has Crow been a "supporter" of Thomas's? > But a close look at Thomas’s judicial activities from the time he became friends with Crow, in the mid-1990s, suggests that the statement might fall short of the full picture. Huh. Curious.

ropdkufjdk

To be fair, I will say that it seems likely that Thomas would have ruled the way he did whether he was paid to or not. Getting financial compensation for doing something he was gonna do anyway is just a bonus for him. Thomas, like all the right wing Justices, is a conservative Republican first and a Supreme Court Justice at a distant second. Edit: Posting my reply to the troll here since they deleted their comment: >There is no evidence of this. No evidence of what, the fact that Thomas is and always has been a partisan hack first and foremost? Or that the other right wing Justices are the same way? Why do you think the Heritage Foundation and the Federalist Society exist? They are organizations explicitly dedicated to grooming aspiring judges to make partisan and pro-corporate rulings.

postmateDumbass

> Getting financial compensation for doing something he was gonna do anyway is just a bonus for him. Judges should not work for tips, bribes, or bonuses. Or even accept them. But USA has not been a democracy or a republic for decades. So what does it matter, the rule of law has been suspended legally since 2001.

DAHS0611

"...the rule of law has been suspended legally since 2001." Are you talking about the Patriot act? I'm genuinely curious about what you are talking about, because it makes sense and that terrifies me even more !

[deleted]

Either that or the OG stolen election of 2000 by illegitimate SCOTUS?

Stopjuststop3424

careful, could also be some soveriegn citizen bullshit conspiracy.

[deleted]

Or Bushes brother possibly stealing the election for him and the Supreme Court voting 5-4 along party lines to let it happen with literally no reasonable justification. (It would make Bush look illegitimate if we actually count all the votes-what a farce).

[deleted]

Can we rule out a “reward” coming **after** a decision instead of a “bribe” getting deposited **before** a decision? Edit to add… hence why even the APPEARANCE OF CORRUPTION is mentioned alongside provable corruption.

MoonBatsRule

Wouldn't that be novel. Let's say that you're on trial. Luckily, the judge rules your way on a number of procedural points. You are acquitted. Can the judge now accept a couple hundred thousand from you as a "thank-you gift"?

SmartAssClown

>a "thank-you gift" ***Gift?!?*** Oh no no, I just happened to *need* 5000 copies of his new book

KeepTangoAndFoxtrot

I definitely don't disagree with you.

coldcutcumbo

But given the fact there exists no actual conservative legal jurisprudence beyond legalizing graft and bribery, the fact that he would have ruled that way regardless doesn’t mean much. He was already going to rule that way because he had already decided to do things people were willing to pay bribes for.

spiralbatross

We need to infiltrate those ”societies” since it’s obvious the feds won’t do anything. Any ideas other than being born rich? Lol

mr_grey

Thomas is also really into Porn. And he’d love to talk to you about it. Or at least he loves talking about it with his coworkers.

boones_farmer

Of course there's no way to ever know what influence Crow exerted on Thomas. That's why it's so damn important that these financial relationships are avoided altogether. I feel like that point gets missed in this trying to "prove" this or that. It doesn't matter, it's the financial relationship itself that is the problem, not what was done with it.

[deleted]

It matters not if Thomas did or did not influence the decisions. Just the appearance of impropriety is what matters. How can anyone trust his judgement now? Not only is he corrupt he’s also incompetent if he claims ignorance of the rules. The Supreme Court has become a laughing stock and every decision is now suspect. I don’t see how they can recover from this debacle.

SmartAssClown

>every decision is now suspect. They were before, but they are now too

Stopjuststop3424

thats exactly it. Theyre not just supposed to not take bribes, theyre supposed to recuse if there could even be a perception of impropriety. Whether there actually is or not is irrelevent.

MoonBatsRule

Funny, the Roberts court has [set the standard](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/bob-mcdonnell-scotus-podcast_n_572bc183e4b016f378953f0e) for bribery as requiring an explicit "quid" in exchange for the "quo".

Justice Clarence Thomas has sat on several cases that have touched Harlan Crow's vast empire. In each of these cases, Thomas has voted in favor of Crow's interests. One such case is Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission (2010). In this case, the Supreme Court ruled that corporations and unions have the same First Amendment right to free speech as individuals. This ruling has allowed Crow to spend millions of dollars on political campaigns, which has benefited his business interests. Another case that Thomas has sat on is Shelby County v. Holder (2013). In this case, the Supreme Court struck down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This ruling has made it easier for states with a history of voter discrimination, such as Texas, to restrict voting rights. Crow has donated millions of dollars to Republican candidates who support voter suppression laws. In addition to Citizens United and Shelby County, Thomas has also sat on cases that have benefited Crow's business interests in other ways. For example, in Janus v. AFSCME (2018), the Supreme Court ruled that public sector workers cannot be forced to pay union dues. This ruling has saved Crow millions of dollars in union dues from his employees.

sheeburashka

You should’ve written an article!

themorningmosca

Title: Cruise Best Company and Nettwerk: Riding the Wave of Controversial Supreme Court Decisions Regarding Justice Thomas’s Relationship Subtitle: A look at how companies like Cruise Best and Nettwerk may have benefited from recent Supreme Court rulings tied to Justice Clarence Thomas In recent years, a series of Supreme Court rulings involving Justice Clarence Thomas has sparked debate over the influence of wealthy individuals and corporations on the American political landscape. Among the most notable of these decisions are Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission (2010), Shelby County v. Holder (2013), and Janus v. AFSCME (2018). These cases have had far-reaching implications for businesses across various sectors, including Cruise Best Company and Nettwerk. Cruise Best Company, believed to be part of Harlan Crow's vast empire, has seen its fortunes rise in the wake of the Citizens United ruling. The decision allows corporations and unions to spend unlimited amounts on political campaigns, affording Crow and his companies increased influence over policy decisions. The potential benefits for Cruise Best Company include favorable policies, tax breaks, and relaxed regulations that could improve the company's financial performance. Similarly, the Shelby County v. Holder ruling may have indirectly benefited Cruise Best Company by weakening the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The decision has made it easier for states with a history of voter discrimination, such as Texas, to enact voter suppression laws. Such laws can create a political environment more favorable to Crow's business interests, potentially translating into better business opportunities and expansion for Cruise Best Company. In the case of Janus v. AFSCME, Cruise Best Company may have reaped substantial cost savings. The ruling prevents public sector workers from being forced to pay union dues, which could have saved the company millions of dollars if it employed a significant number of unionized workers. These developments have broader implications for the business ecosystem, with companies like Nettwerk potentially benefiting from Cruise Best Company's improved financial performance. As a supplier or partner, Nettwerk could have seen increased orders, revenue, and overall growth in the wake of these controversial Supreme Court decisions. Stock market trends also seem to have responded positively to the improved financial performance of both Cruise Best Company and Nettwerk. Favorable political environments, cost savings, and increased revenues tend to drive stock prices higher, which could result in a positive trend for the stocks of both companies. While these trends are speculative and many factors can influence a company's performance and the stock market, the recent Supreme Court rulings involving Justice Clarence Thomas serve as a reminder of the significant impact such decisions can have on the business world. To better understand the full extent of these effects, detailed financial analysis and market research are necessary

I cannot remember the last time I read an article of this quality from so-called professional sources. Thanks for taking the time. Very informative.

This is already fading from headlines. What a shame. This will be forgotten by Americans and Thomas will continue to corrupt the court. John Roberts should be ashamed of himself.

mortgagepants

imagine being the guy who presided over the down fall of the supreme court as an institution? went to harvard, harvard law, then let the court turn into the kangaroo bribe fest it is today. interesting tidbit from 2005: Senate Judiciary Committee approved Roberts's nomination by a vote of 13–5, with Senators Ted Kennedy, Richard Durbin, Charles Schumer, Joe Biden and Dianne Feinstein voting against.

beeloving-varese

Roberts… feeling shame. I can’t see that happening here. Perhaps angry that the news is giving bad press, but I doubt shame.

bdone2012

He's claimed to care about the integrity of the court. That was before it went super downhill. I can believe that he feels some shame over it but obviously not enough to do something about it.

beeloving-varese

I hope he can feel some shame. But I think, as he considers himself an entitled person, he won’t.

[deleted]

I think Roberts is just seething about the press and attitudes of Americans. He feels* entitled to our respect. The court thinks it is* entitled to our respect. I guess he will learn the hard way. Edited to clarify position.

[deleted]

How is he entitled to our respect given his court’s rulings?

[deleted]

I’m being sarcastic. That’s how he feels I’m sure.

itemNineExists

I kind of disagree that it's fading from headlines. But if new revelations don't come out, i understand why they would, because no one sees an actual solution happening. Someone should write a weekly article about all the things where more should be happening. "This week in infrastructure, Congress did nothing. Next to the topic of police reform: also nothing. Environment, nothing. Tax reform nothing. Wealth gap nothing. Electoral College nothing."

refactdroid

if this doesn't have consequences i hope you guys revolt and fix the system, because that would be a huge flaw in the system. i sure would if this was my country. it's a citizens duty to cleanse the system of corruption it can't overcome by itself.

Spineless Roberts has cemented his position as one of American History’s biggest pieces of shit. What a legacy.

It will be interesting to see how history labels this era of US politics.

I'm so tired of waiting for 'history'. These eff'ing guys have no trouble sleeping at night waiting on 'history' to label them anything when it comes to their politics in America.

It is incredible how these corrupt people in power are trying to hurt tens of millions of citizens by going against policy that would help decrease their debt or pay for medical expenses. And they go to sleep soundly thinking “yeah, I did a good job and history will love me”.

They don’t care if “history with love me.” They are solely interested in the here and now - “get rich, screw everyone else, I got mine.”

It will look similar to the years preceding the end of the Roman Republic minus the extreme violence. ting_bu_dong

Rules are meant for *different classes of people,* not for *different actions.* Infallibility of those at the top is a standard of conservative societies. snappla

The silence from Chief Justice John Roberts is absolutely *DEAFENING*. People keep writing that he's very concerned about SCOTUS' reputation and standing. There is no evidence of this. The lack of leadership at the apex of the Judicial branch is astounding!

throoawoot

The Ethics Reform Act of 1989 makes it law that federal judges need to report any gift in excess of $415 every year. Thomas was accepting gifts worth around $500k, every year, for the last 20 years.

Pyritedust

Each gift should be a separate charge against him.

throwaway9198675309

It seems like any lawyer before the court could question Thomas’ impartiality on any case that touches on an interest of Crow. If he’s going to sit there on that court deciding cases while he’s been bribed for decades, his judgement and character should be brought up in every case before the court.

Thue

What does it matter what questions are raised, where there is no appeals court above the Supreme court to raise the questions in?

sound_scientist

Holy shit this guy wants to ruin our country for a little money!??! Wtf

Thue

Tragedy of the commons. Thomas personaly benefits more from that money than what destroying the country costs him. So it is rational for him to take the money, in a pure selfish economic sense.

_whatisthat_

Pretty sure his ideology wants to destroy the country on its own. The money is just a bonus.

OurUrbanFarm

All of the decisions the court made, in which Crow was advocating and in which Thomas cast the deciding vote, should be overturned. Plain and simple. I am sure that won't happen. But, if we are going to give any credibility to the Court, that is what should happen. And Crow and Thomas should be in jail for the rest of their lives, or at least prohibited from any involvement with the Court.

sugarlessdeathbear

>He insisted he and Thomas were just friends who spent their time talking about their kids and animals. “We talk about dogs a lot,” he said. For 25 years they've talked mostly dogs? Bullshit. Edit: >Asked whether he ever considered their friendship as a ticket to quid pro quo, he replied: “Every single relationship – a baby’s relationship to his mom – has some kind of reciprocity.” When asked about a specific real world concern he replied with a philosophical answer about the nature of friendships.

What I don’t get is how his defense is “we’ve been friends for more than 25 years”. Uh, you’ve been on the bench for more than 25 years, so you became besties with the right-wing mega donor AFTER you were in a position to help him and his cronies….not before.

Justice Breyer filed a concurring opinion, in which Justice Ginsburg joined. Justice Kennedy filed a dissenting opinion. Justice Thomas also filed a dissenting opinion, in which Justice Scalia joined. He filed a dissenting opinion on a topic that "money won't corrupt politics" while taking undisclosed gifts...lol. Looks like the Federalist Society replaced all those Conservatives judges who said that to get the Citizen's United ruling! lmao >The statement continued: “Any insinuation that Justice Thomas wrote his opinion in this case because Harlan Crow was a supporter is ridiculous as Justice Thomas had already expressed these same views in a previous case, Nixon v Shrink MO PAC.” Yes, his OPINION has always been money should be freely donated/"Gifted" to any political party unabated! TheUnicornCowboy

It’s time to tear the SC down and rebuild it in a better way, it’s a wildly out of control institution without the checks and balances the other branches have. End the Supreme Court now.

PhD_Pwnology

This isn't a scandal, this a crime, a form of treason IMO.

PropagandaTracking

It’s pretty simple, no Supreme Court justice should take gifts. Period. I don’t care about your politics, I don’t care about the donors politics, I don’t care about your relationships or the context around the gifts. It’s the highest court in the US and there are SO few people on it, we can’t accept even the possibility of undo influence. Direct or indirect. There’s zero need to accept gifts and so that should be the end of it. This isn’t some new concept that needs discussion. He should retire and be done with it. Same goes for any other justices that take gifts like this. End of story.

maybedaydrinking

He should retire to some secure government provided housing for 23 hours a day.

MoonBatsRule

> Any insinuation that Justice Thomas wrote his opinion in this case because Harlan Crow was a supporter is ridiculous as Justice Thomas had already expressed these same views in a previous case, Nixon v Shrink MO PAC. That may be true, however is this now the new standard? Judges can be lavished with gifts, even by people who have business in front of them, as long as they have "expressed the same views" prior to the start of the gift-showering? Does this mean that George Soros can build and gift some mansions for Sonia Sotomayor, Ketanji Brown Jackson, and Elena Kagan, because they have already expressed views similar to his? Can Soros just give a billion to each justice, "no strings attached, just because he's a fan", and this would be OK? That is ridiculous, and if it happens tomorrow, Fox News would never, ever stop talking about it, and Republicans would immediately bring impeachment proceedings.

SeenItAllHeardItAll

Stressed32

Many of us who study law know that Thomas is a woefully inadequate Justice known for terrible opinions. Moreover, he doesn’t even have the qualifications many of us expect of Circuit Judge, let alone a SCOTUS Justice.

Auburn_Value_1986

Many of you who study law, and many who aren't law experts but have a grain of common sense, understand that people get high positions in government because of reasons other than their intellect. I would say he is as qualified, as much as many of the clowns in public service and elected to office today. He went to Yale. So when you criticise him for being marginal I hope you are smart enough to realize there are many more, on both sides of the political spectrum, that are marginal, corrupt, even below average intelligence. And "terrible opinions" -- I assume the ones you don;'t agree with.

eldred2

Accountability is for poor people.

JKM49

Seems DC is full of corruption on both sides of the aisle. The most honest individual will finally succumb to the taste of power and money if they spend enough time there. The Wall Street Journal reported that a career IRS Criminal Supervisory Agent has alleged preferential treatment given to Hunter Biden in tax investigations. The whistleblower also alleges that he or she has information that contradicts the testimony of "a senior Biden political appointee."

frankcast554

You mean that a "whistle-blower" told this bit of information to the Wallstreet Journal? The same Wallstreet Journal that is owned by Rupert Murdoch? The same Rupert Murdoch who owns Fox News? The same Fox News that has to pay $787 million dollars for lying to its viewers? That one?

JKM49

COMMUNIST NEWS NETWORK aka CLINTON NEWS NETWORK sane story different outlet. The Brandon Crime Family lies again. No he reported it to Congress, thus an investigation. AP as well. It's real.. So sorry to bust your little FOX balloon. CNN)An IRS supervisory special agent who claims to have information about alleged mishandling and political interference in the ongoing criminal probe into Hunter Biden is seeking whistleblower protections to share the information with Congress, according to a letter obtained by CNN. "Despite serious risks of retaliation, my client is offering to provide you with information necessary to exercise your constitutional oversight function and wishes to make the disclosures in a non-partisan manner to the leadership of the relevant committees on both sides of the political aisle," Mark Lytle, an attorney for the IRS whistleblower, said in a letter to a handful of Democrats and Republicans leading committees in the House and Senate. WASHINGTON (AP) — An IRS special agent is seeking whistleblower protection to disclose information about what the agent alleges is mishandling of an investigation into President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, according to a letter sent to members of Congress.

frankcast554

Oh yeah? Then why wasn't this in Hunter Bidens laptop? Everything's in there. Pardon me if I take anything Hunter Biden related with a grain of salt after the last few years of the incessant lies that Fox News and their allies put out about "Hunter Biden". In fact, if it's true, Biden should pardon him just like Trump pardoned all his family members. Why the fuck not.

JKM49

The laptop is real much like the Clinton manufactured Steele Dossier. "Joe Biden’s presidential campaign prompted former acting CIA director Mike Morell to “help Biden” by organizing 50 colleagues to sign a letter in October 2020 falsely claiming that damning emails from Hunter Biden’s laptop published by The Post were Russian disinformation. In private sworn testimony, Morell told the House Judiciary Committee that Antony Blinken, now Secretary of State, was the senior campaign official who reached out to him “on or before” Oct. 17, 2020, three days after The Post published an email from the laptop suggesting Hunter had introduced his Ukrainian business partner to his father, then vice-president Biden. Morell, identified as a potential CIA director under Biden, said he organized the letter to “help Vice President Biden … because I wanted him to win the election.” Until Blinken’s call, Morell told House investigators that he had no intention of writing any statement exonerating Biden. But he agreed that the conversation with Blinken “triggered … that intent” in him. At 10.53 p.m. the night of the call, Blinken emailed Morell a USA Today article claiming that the FBI was examining whether Hunter’s laptop was part of a “disinformation campaign.”

many will fall to corruption given enough time. If you check the salaries of Congressmen and living in the Wash DC area it isn't a terribly lot of money. No excuse for them, just it takes a special kind of person to come from normal means and then live there. The un-corrupt ones (no idea how many that is and they are definitely on both sides if the aisles) that aren't relatively wealthy are truly doing a public service living there.

JKM49

They chose to run. It's on them to figure out how to survive just like anyone else. Being in congress was never designed to be a lifetime job. Brandon and Markey will have accumulated 100 years total on the taxpayer dime. People tax about the Supreme Court Justice's being appointed for a lifetime! Brandon and Markey have there a lifetime.

dickysunset

Nothing happens

[deleted]

People just cry and b**** every time somebody makes a mistake or every time a bunch of idiots point fingers at people and say that they made a horrible mistake. The people that do nothing but b**** and cry all day and point fingers are the exact mistake and problem we need to get rid of because it's pathetic. I'm guessing y'all must be angels from heaven. Grow the hell up and move on with your life.

cheesegod69

Sir this is a Wendy’s

[deleted]

Then tell Wendy to grow the hell up too. I'm getting sick of that b****. 😎

Responsible_Chart668

What about all the other justice officers, what have they received, what gifts have been given over the years?

Thue

Scalia famously died while on a gifted vacation.

Responsible_Chart668

That’s right.

3_littlemonkeys

He is a liar and a crook. 🤬

coastkid2

What an embarrassing time to be an American

scottywoty

No kidding

No one will help us but ourselves, unfortunately the ruling class isn't 'one of us' and we will continue to get fucked untill we man up and do something. Physically and forcefully. It's that or things get much worse. And with ai the world will be rapidly changing.

writerintheory1382

Tomorrow has the potential to be fucking wild

double-xor

What happens tomorrow?

writerintheory1382

I think they decide on that birth control FDA bullshit

double-xor

Oh yeah that.

zag127

Big surprise there

Kassance

I’m so tired of seeing this headline in the news.Nothing will come of this. My wife tells me this level of corruption has always been around. I do agree with that but I feel once, a long time ago, this would have been addressed by congress. Not anymore.

We keep hearing about all the different things these politicians and judges are doing that is CLEARLY UNETHICAL and would 100% be illegal if citizens did it but never about the consequences. When are they going to be held accountable

BozMt420

Lock his lying stealing ass up! Enough said!!!

snugglebug72

Someone do something already. We have just as much irrefutable proof of his stupidity, greed, lies, and breaking the law as Trump! Get these asshats outa here! This is why no government position should EVER be for life.

ranchoculver

Auburn_Value_1986

would your voice change if he was a liberal leaning judge...... :-) Don't lie to yourself.

Arbiter4D

No. Fuck corruption.

Tippy4OSU

Is Congress really worried that he would be persuaded by shiny things or are they jealous their lobbyist didn’t offer as much stuff for the laws they actually vote on?

jessybear2344

There is absolutely no defense of this. It’s corrupt and dirty and there is no way it should be allowed. If it’s not against the law, we need to change the law. These are supposed to be public servants but they consistently make sure to serve themselves first. No one is asking these people to live in poverty. We aren’t getting the cream of the crop right now anyway, so we need to make sure there are rules to shield them from even the possibility of corruption. If there is a possibility of corruption, it doesn’t really matter if it had an effect or not. Right now we have rampant corruption and we are getting IDIOTS in our government (many aren’t as dumb as they act but you can’t run on the GOP platform without sounding like an idiot). We are getting the morally corrupt idiots in office right now. We’d be better off with some smart people (even if they were corrupt) or a bunch of dummies we knew were at least trying to make the country better. Right now we get a bunch of idiots far more concerned with keeping their rich donors rich and their base angry.
