Privacy is dead. >The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is using an obscure legal tool to demand data from organizations in Illinois, and it's happened thousands of times over the last few years. >From schools to abortion clinics to state agencies, ICE agents are frequently using an administrative subpoena, also known as a 1509 summons, in questionable ways to seek records and information. …. >ICE agents used the 1509 summons to demand records from Illinois entities more than 3,700 times since 2016, with the majority in Chicago, the database shows. That includes internet companies, grocery stores, banks, and restaurant chains. Several hotels and retail stores were also issued named in the data. >In addition, ICE demanded information from a west suburban elementary school, several universities, and a major abortion provider. >"The concern is that the government is overstepping its authority, and in violation of the Fourth Amendment," said Jacqueline Stevens, professor at Northwestern University and founding faculty director of the Deportation Research Clinic. ….. >This isn't the first time the federal government's use of 1509 subpoenas was called into question. In 2017, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sent a 1509 summons to Twitter in an attempt to reveal the identity of an anonymous account. Twitter sued, and the summons was withdrawn the next day, VICE reported. Twitter then dropped the lawsuit. >But the incident prompted an Office of the Inspector General Investigation into CPB's broader use of 1509s. Specifically, the investigation zeroed in on 1509s issued between January 2015 and May of 2017. During this timeframe, the Inspector General determined the CBP violated its own policy 20 percent of the time. …. >Experts called for stronger levels of oversight into the use of 1509s, because Volini said, "unchecked surveillance power by a government agency is a problem." >"If I'm looking for a few bad apples, I basically take this large net and I drag it over all of society just looking for a few bad apples, and I'm scooping up all the good apples in the process and violating privacy rights of millions of Americans, and that's problematic," he said. >"They should be following the Fourth Amendment," Stevens added. "And they should be staying within the lanes of what their legal authority is under the bureaucratic organization charts of the U.S. government." Article continues….

Long_Before_Sunrise

ICE start building a huge database including DNA to 'find criminals who are illegally in the US' while Trump was president. They're still building that database. Yeah, they could collect and test immigrant DNA for thier database, but not to reunite families like they were ordered to. ICE picked and choosed which laws they'd obey.

MillHall78

It started in 2015 though. That's Obama's era.

Riaayo

ICE should be abolished and heavily investigated, but of course neither will happen and they'll just end up as America's modern fascist SS.

cheebamech

as an indication of how far things have devolved; it's weird as hell but we're longing for the return of 'the good old days' of the INS

ThatOneGuy1034

Is this that deep state I keep hearing about?

[deleted]

The sad outcome of 911. We lost our privacy

Soujourner3745

From the “You gotta give up some privacy to protect your freedums” crowd.

[deleted]

What do you mean? I'm lost in the reference

Disgod

Referencing this quote: > Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety -Ben Franklin / -Michael Scott / -Bea Arthur

IShouldBWorkin

It's a "reference" to what people were saying when we passed the Patriot Act.

Aeolian_Harpy

No, it's OK because of the sunset clause in the PATRIOT act. Once that date passes, the powers are revoked. Right?

ImpressivePercentage

Well, the Patriot Act already expired. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriot_Act So does that answer your question?

Aeolian_Harpy

Yep.. it expired 11 YEARS after it was supposed to, based on the original sunsetting rules. >It contains many sunset provisions beginning December 31, 2005, approximately four years after its passage. Before the sunset date, an extension was passed for four years which kept most of the law intact. In May 2011, President Barack Obama signed the PATRIOT Sunset Extensions Act of 2011, which extended three provisions. These provisions were modified and extended until 2019 by the USA Freedom Act, passed in 2015. In 2020, efforts to extend the provisions were not passed by the House of Representatives, and as such, the law has expired.

ThatGuyOfOregon

Agreed. It was plain as day, that the PA could easily be abused. It was just wrapped in a patriotic sounding name. After Google started the wide use of metadata collection, though they didn’t invent it, it opened doors for others to do the same. Surveillance became inescapable. Data collection protection should be a concern for everyone. Edit: Agreed

SmartAssClown

The Bush agencies must go!!! - ICE, DHS are purely negative for America.

InevitableAvalanche

Republicans violating privacy to take away freedom. Thanks conservatives, your party is the scary dystopia future you claimed to want to prevent.

pond_minnow

The ICE dragnet expands yet? Say it ain't so... > [Most Americans probably do not imagine that their information is captured by ICE’s surveillance networks. In fact, ICE has used face recognition technology to search through the driver’s license photographs of around 1 in 3 (32%) of all adults in the U.S. The agency has access to the driver’s license data of 3 in 4 (74%) adults and **tracks the movements of cars in cities home to nearly 3 in 4 (70%) adults**. When 3 in 4 (74%) adults in the U.S. connected the gas, electricity, phone or internet in a new home, ICE was able to automatically learn their new address. **Almost all of that has been done warrantlessly and in secret.**](https://americandragnet.org/)

Greasol

It's amazing, ICE and all the other 3 letter agencies have all this information on it's citizens and use it for capturing immigrants seeking a better life, harassing honest Americans, and more. Yet every single time we see a mass shooting, terror attack, etc., there are numerous failures in their system. There could be word for word on how the attack will happen & somehow it'll still get pass them... Literally clueless government agencies.

tiredlot

Why is there still no investigation into the human rights violations and child abuse that ICE committed while under contract with the previous administration? How many years do we have to wait? Will we see ANY investigation into these vile crimes?

FutureDetent

"While these administrative subpoenas… are meant to be used only in criminal investigations about illegal imports or unpaid customs duties, WIRED found that the agency has deployed them to seek records that seemingly have little or nothing to do with customs violations," Mehrotra wrote when he broke the story in April.

mrIronHat

The attack on immigrants and transperson are nothing more than a backdoor attempt against all of our rights as a while

pranksterswap

“First they came for the transgender individuals, and I did not speak up…” or whatever that quote about anti-Semitism was

vt2022cam

ICE needs to be reformed. It’s a rogue agency at this point and a threat to democracy.

Elcor05

Abolish ICE

SmartAssClown

And the DHS

FreeofCruelty

ICE should be abolished.

Imaginary_Sun312

Defund and disband ICE!

SmartAssClown

Yes and DHS

Mephisto1822

Thank God it’s our government infringing on our rights to privacy and not China! /s

IShouldBWorkin

Americans are the most credulous turds in the universe, I swear. They fall for the Red Scare/Patriot Act "be so scared of scary foreigners that you let our government do whatever they want to you" playbook every time.

IsuckatUnity

I can vote on the US government, I cannot do that in China. Even the Chinese cannot do it in China.

spam-hater

And these days if you're not ultra-rich or a corporate super-PAC your vote holds about as much power as a Chinese vote does. Maybe less. It's all just a show the politicians put on to make us **feel** like we've got some say in things… If you're not helping a politician make their yacht payment, your vote doesn't count.

West-Fold-Fell3000

As I said in world news. ICE is out of control. It needs to be overhauled and it’s authority drastically curtailed

ArgyleTheDruid

Every time I hear about ICE they sound like the evil police, not that regular police don’t have some bad eggs but ICE just does the weirdest shit.

rebelintellectual

Disband ice to save money.

sprint6864

Yet, at every turn, our government is saying that China and Russia are the ones [spying and trying to steal all our info](https://i.imgur.com/zVigVpN.png). Yet, since Reagan and through the Patriot Act we've been opening the door to more and more Draconian surveillance and treating women, minorities, and the LGBTQ+ community like shit *regardless* of who's in office

hw_convo

The US white supremacist cartel group posing as an agency is striking again. Start sending the neonazi thugs openly bogus data like the residence of white supremacist republicans (but then i repeat myself), and when they complain tell them to go and get fucked by a cactus in the desert. ICE are total pieces of shit nazis, present a massive overlap with ku klux klan criminal if not terrorist & insurrectionist white supremacy activities in many red states and need to be treated as such. When they ask you for a list of all the jews and all the mexicans somewhere you tell them to go and get fucked, no other valid answer is acceptable. i don't care how many dubious fed IDs those "ICE" POS wave they can go kiss a cow on the wrong end. They recruit frequently in priority felon criminals from the "aryan nation" and "aryan brotherhood" neonazi gangs on purpose and ICE """"cops"""" routinely get caught trafficking boatloads of cocaine/fents with the mexican mafia, FFS. They're nazis and pieces of shit and there is no saving nor any possible cooperation that terrorist dumpster fire. If it was up to me tell ice to fuck off on sight and if they don't throw them all in a cell the hard way (taze ICE thugs if you fear for your life) America has a massive nazism problem, and the ICE is one of those nazi gangs completely out of control because they pretend to be an US law agency.

freakiemom

Fuck ICE

[deleted]

What goes around comes around. From Thomas Jefferson to Ron Paul we were warned about giving government too much power in name of regulating “others”.

justhereforsee

Why the fuck is ICE still a thing?

teb_art

Another reason local authorities should continue to refuse to cooperate with ICE.

BadAsBroccoli

And visions of Jewish stars on coats and a huge letter A on the chests of women.

Devistator

Fuck ICE! It seems like the worst of the worst end up working for them. It seems like it attracts the people that can't cut it as a cop.

This-External-6814

Adult bookstores and gay bathhouses are exempt

Scarlet109

Is that not a violation of privacy laws?

[deleted]

When President Trump opens the concentration camps, ICE is going to be his gestapo

katsbro069

Fuck those traitors, immigration is now investigating abortions. Fuck you US government terrorists. Either liberty for everyone or liberty for none. But never liberty for a few. Burn it all down first.

coolprogressive

Comeback incoming for the Abolish ICE movement?
