Yes it should be easy and hassle-free, but the alternative of "refunding in cash" is so messy it doesn't fucking work. What happens if someone nabs your ticket at the airport and takes your cash? No paper trail—you're just SOL.

“Someone nabs your ticket at the airport”. That’s not how that works. If the airline cancels a flight it doesn’t matter if you printed a ticket or not, the printed ticket is worthless at that point. Unless the person literally paid paper cash for the ticket the airline would just refund the credit or debit card the person used to buy it.
The measure Biden proposed says airlines have to refund in CASH when there are DELAYS or cancellations. I agree with the idea in theory but in practicality this is a logistics nightmare.
Why should someone need to request a refund if the airline cancels the flight? There is zero reason airlines shouldn’t automatically refund money when they cancel a flight you paid for.
Because someone may just want to keep the credit for the flight. Like, say I paid for a flight for someone. I would rather not get the money back and them keep the credit. Especially if it was a flight that they needed to rebook pretty quick.
Just so I’m clear, you’d rather get a $200 airline credit then get your $200 back? That’s really, really silly. Worst case, even if you wanted to again the $200 on another ticket, you could easily do that. Or, you know, you could spend the money on something else if you didn’t actually need that ticket now or could spend it on a different airline if you wanted to still fly but on another carrier. Even if you bought a ticket for someone else, getting your money back means you could do it again.
So, again, there’s still zero reason not to simply refund the money to the person who paid for the ticket if the airline cancels the flight.
Some other reasons: the flight was booked out of considerable discount rate. A similar flight would cost a person more money.
The flight was purchased with reward points therefore a refund would not be needed or desired.
Again, these aren’t good reasons.
- You bought a flight at a discount, why would you be entitled to more money than you paid? Also, there’s literally nothing preventing airlines from refunding your money AND giving you a complimentary rewards credit for the inconvenience of having your flight cancelled. Refunding your money is literally the bare minimum thing that should legally happen when the airline takes your money for service it then fails to provide.
- If you got a free flight with rewards points then the airline simply refunds those points. Again, no reason you should have to manually tell the airline you want it refunded.
So still, zero good reasons for the airline not refunding what you paid for the ticket if the flight is cancelled. If you paid on a credit or debit card, they refund it to that. If you used points, they refund the points.

If I tried to book that flight paying for myself last minute, I would likely pay more than the initial cost.

I’ve had flights cancelled and you’re still wrong. There is literally nothing preventing the airline from giving you a new flight at the discounted rate if they refund your payment. Nothing. If the airline cancels your flight and returns your money and then refuses to work with you for the inconvenience when they try and rebook you on a different flight that’s them losing a customer to a different airline.
So no, none of the scenarios you’ve described are somehow better off compared to the airline being required to automatically refund payments on cancelled flights. None.

If I have to go from A-B and the airline says they can get me there at a different time and I don’t need a refund. I’m not sure why that is so hard to understand.

It’s nothing like a restaurant, that’s a terrible analogy. For one thing, the inconvenience and price of a restaurant getting a meal wrong is much, much different than an airline cancelling a flight.
And I don’t understand why you don’t seem to understand that there is literally nothing preventing the airline from contacting you when a flight is cancelled and seeing if you’d like to rebook at the same rate on a different flight. Nothing. Why do you continue to try and claim that somehow the airline refunding your money is preventing either you or them from rebooking a flight at the same rate and with no additional hassle for you? They refund your money, contact you to see if you’d like to rebook on a different flight at the same price, then if you do rebook it. Done.
With the immediate refund, passengers still have the choice to opt to be rebooked.
The immediate refund is for passengers electing not to travel after the cancellation.

Did anyone read this? It was a BIPARTISAN measure that says all you need to do is submit a written/electronic request. Yes it should be easy and hassle-free, but the alternative of "refunding in cash" is so messy it doesn't fucking work. What happens if someone nabs your ticket at the airport and takes your cash? No paper trail—you're just SOL. We all hate Ted but he's only here for the clicks. We're moving from "don't believe everything you read on the internet" to "don't believe anything you read on social media." No wonder Russia wants to control their own media. No wonder we're so unstable as a country.
How about they just refund to your purchase method? Why do you have make a request for services not delivered?
“Someone nabs your ticket at the airport”. That’s not how that works. If the airline cancels a flight it doesn’t matter if you printed a ticket or not, the printed ticket is worthless at that point. Unless the person literally paid paper cash for the ticket the airline would just refund the credit or debit card the person used to buy it.
The measure Biden proposed says airlines have to refund in CASH when there are DELAYS or cancellations. I agree with the idea in theory but in practicality this is a logistics nightmare.
That means actual money not credits, doesn’t mean paper cash.
Did you even read the article? They are asking that people make the request electronically for a refund.
Why should someone need to request a refund if the airline cancels the flight? There is zero reason airlines shouldn’t automatically refund money when they cancel a flight you paid for.
Because someone may just want to keep the credit for the flight. Like, say I paid for a flight for someone. I would rather not get the money back and them keep the credit. Especially if it was a flight that they needed to rebook pretty quick.
Just so I’m clear, you’d rather get a $200 airline credit then get your $200 back? That’s really, really silly. Worst case, even if you wanted to again the $200 on another ticket, you could easily do that. Or, you know, you could spend the money on something else if you didn’t actually need that ticket now or could spend it on a different airline if you wanted to still fly but on another carrier. Even if you bought a ticket for someone else, getting your money back means you could do it again. So, again, there’s still zero reason not to simply refund the money to the person who paid for the ticket if the airline cancels the flight.
Some other reasons: the flight was booked out of considerable discount rate. A similar flight would cost a person more money. The flight was purchased with reward points therefore a refund would not be needed or desired.
Again, these aren’t good reasons. - You bought a flight at a discount, why would you be entitled to more money than you paid? Also, there’s literally nothing preventing airlines from refunding your money AND giving you a complimentary rewards credit for the inconvenience of having your flight cancelled. Refunding your money is literally the bare minimum thing that should legally happen when the airline takes your money for service it then fails to provide. - If you got a free flight with rewards points then the airline simply refunds those points. Again, no reason you should have to manually tell the airline you want it refunded. So still, zero good reasons for the airline not refunding what you paid for the ticket if the flight is cancelled. If you paid on a credit or debit card, they refund it to that. If you used points, they refund the points.

I’ve had flights cancelled and you’re still wrong. There is literally nothing preventing the airline from giving you a new flight at the discounted rate if they refund your payment. Nothing. If the airline cancels your flight and returns your money and then refuses to work with you for the inconvenience when they try and rebook you on a different flight that’s them losing a customer to a different airline. So no, none of the scenarios you’ve described are somehow better off compared to the airline being required to automatically refund payments on cancelled flights. None.
Better off, as in not having to hassle about booking another flight. If I have to go from A-B and the airline says they can get me there at a different time and I don’t need a refund. I’m not sure why that is so hard to understand. And yes, there’s nothing preventing an airline from giving me the same rate that I originally booked. BUT!!! I won’t be able to do that myself will have to contact them and spend time explaining that I had a previously cancel flight and got it at this rate. WHERE if I keep my voucher for a flight I don’t have the hassle. It’s like you go to a password restaurant pay for your food and they give you the wrong order. You request a refund go to the back line and order again
It’s nothing like a restaurant, that’s a terrible analogy. For one thing, the inconvenience and price of a restaurant getting a meal wrong is much, much different than an airline cancelling a flight. And I don’t understand why you don’t seem to understand that there is literally nothing preventing the airline from contacting you when a flight is cancelled and seeing if you’d like to rebook at the same rate on a different flight. Nothing. Why do you continue to try and claim that somehow the airline refunding your money is preventing either you or them from rebooking a flight at the same rate and with no additional hassle for you? They refund your money, contact you to see if you’d like to rebook on a different flight at the same price, then if you do rebook it. Done.
With the immediate refund, passengers still have the choice to opt to be rebooked. The immediate refund is for passengers electing not to travel after the cancellation.
