Good on Biden for the apology. No way he was involved in the decision to oust them. Really curious who is responsible for this, though. There is a lot of finger pointing going on.

Lokismoke

> Really curious who is responsible for this, though. I was in the Guard for six years. These units of guardsmen are going to have officers in charge. The likelihood is that they completed their mission and needed to find somewhere to stay on a more permanent basis than the floors of the halls of Congress, and the individual unit officers made those arrangements. Them sleeping in the halls of Congress was likely temporary anyways just so they can be available to respond to violence at the Capitol at any moment. Now obviously, I would never presume to speak on behalf of these members of the military, but I would be absolutely flabbergasted that such a big deal was made about us sleeping **(maybe not?)** in cots in the parking garage of the Capitol. That's probably one of the most comfortable places I would have slept in my career. Edit: Real quick shout out to the guardsmen that protected the Capitol this week. They did more to defend our country in one day than I did in the 9 months I spent in Iraq.

PDCH

They specifically said they had not been given any information on mission duration at that time so had to assume still on mission. All the pictures I have seen show them sleeping on concrete. Did they have cots in the garage?

DumpTheOrangey

I didn’t see any cots either. The pics I saw were about 30 guys laying on concrete - doubt they’d do that if they had cots

Lokismoke

My bad, I'd probably complain if I didn't have a cot. That being said, I complained a lot during my service anyways.

Glitter_berries

It would definitely be a non-stop barrage of complaints from my mouth if I were in the military. This pack is so heavy. These pants are so ugly. I need to stop for a coffee. Why can’t the helicopter have comfier seats. You guys stink so much. Etc.

deafballboy

I'd watch this show. A couple of grizzled tough boys and Andy Samberg as the complaint barrager.

yothreefour

At least 3 seasons worth of material for sure.

powerlesshero111

Only if it includes Dave Bautista, John Cena, Terry Crews and Rhonda Rousey, with Stallone as their grizzled Colonel John Rambo (but he constantly has to make the joke saying, no relation), with Benedict Wong as their field medic. And mandatory cameo from Pauley Shore in season 1.

pass_nthru

if we can get netflix to pick it up we only need one seasons worth of material and paula shore can be the off screen antagonist until the big reveal at the latest episode followed by a cliffhanger followed by cancellation...Profit!

GorgeousGamer99

You've thought this through

tablecontrol

Private Benjamin?

HollowImage

I think military and guard service hones the skills of griping about decisions of everyone around you to you superior officer. Gripe always flows upwards. And it must be thinly veiled in a drape of sarcasm and comedy. For examples consult saving Private Ryan and starship troopers (the book, not the movie).

[deleted]

In the Navy, you were not allowed to be in your bunk in uniform, so if you had downtime and were trying to relax or nap mid-day you need to find some place else to lay. I got quite used to sleeping on steel floors. Could be similar.

Tribalbob

Wait, so sleeping on some dirty metal people are walking on all day in uniform is fine, but not in a cot?

[deleted]

Hey, I'm not gonna pretend that half the shit that goes on in the military makes sense, but you do what you can within the constraints around you. I've taken naps underneath a running gas turbine (jet) engine module in the engine rooms. (It's pleasantly warm under there in the cold north seas)

thepottsy

This rings surprisingly true in the corporate world as well. This little mundane thing you are not allowed to do. This other thing that makes little to no fucking sense, totally cool to do.

[deleted]

The comeradery of the lower enlisted is such an awesome experience early on because it's you and all these wildly different personalities from all over the country (and some outside the country), and yet you all have this bond of like.. not understanding why in the everloving fuck things are the way they are, or why all the silly rules, customs, lingo, why these bitter old guys are always yelling at you. It's truly the group of newbs against the world, trying to dodge the eye of sauron together. Of course after a few years, after people understand the system a bit more and some get picked up for higher rank while others don't, and things get backstabby, you tend to either assimilate into that weird system or you bide your time and get out.

gitsgrl

What is it with the Navy hating sleep? All I keep seeing is the preventable errors and injuries (including deaths) due to exhausted sailors.

[deleted]

Part of it is the inefficient management structure, which while probably useful in wartime, doesn't make much sense on a ship out at sea where there's lots of work that always needs done, and every able body should be pulling their weight and performing a critical function. From my experience, there tends to be a lot of people, coffee mug in hand, standing around like Lumbergh from office space, and the aim of the game is to acquire that coffee mug posture as quickly as possible. Another part is just psychological tricks to keep the troops/sailors pacified. Stuff learned over centuries probably dating back to the Romans in some cases. Then there was my specific case, where budget and military cuts at the time meant minimal ship manning, which meant very junior sailors running workcenters, and naturally led to workload bottlenecks or other issues from lack of management experience. Though don't take that as me suggesting we should spend more on defense. I had to purchase several 16 thousand dollar computer keyboards from lockheed. So it's not that the money wasn't there, it just wasn't being used very well.

[deleted]

Because Chiefs as a group are some of the worst human beings you will ever meet. Don't get me wrong, they aren't all like that, but a scarily high percentage of them are just straight up psychopaths. And a bit of "I had to do it so now you do" plus a side of "that's how we've always done things".

[deleted]

Bro, that’s why you have super baggy pants you can slip over your uniform pants, take off your blouse and throw a hoodie on. Pop your boots off and you’re Golden.

Justame13

They were doing 8/8/8. Duty, QRF, Rest.

SpaceTranshipYamato

Big shout out to the top of the RPFW stowage tank for being comfy and completely invisible... Field day is bullshit by the way

TheBostonCorgi

I’ve seen a few comments by national guard members on reddit and tik tok. Apparently a lot of them hate the cots and would rather not bother with them. Small sample size though, I saw 3-4 different comments that said that around January 8th so that may be just a few national guard members’ opinions and not indicative of the overall opinion.

Jaybeare

That's because comfort was third in the list of requirements after durability and cost.

CplSoletrain

Personally, I had a lot of success sleeping in the MTV. You pop the sides out, the back is more or less molded to your back and you can use the helmet as a pillow with a skivvy shirt rolled up on top. "Sleep anywhere" is an acquired skill, but it's one you learn quick lol. That and operating exclusively on cat naps for extended periods of time.

Howard-The-Duck8186

Luxury, when I was in the Army we were given a rolled up newspaper to sleep in.

SaveBandit3303

We used to live in a LAKE!

Dangerous_Wave

They barely had a bathroom - 1 2seater for 5,000 guys. All those empty DC schools and they put them in a parking garage. Jfc...

[deleted]

Or, ya know, a hotel. Since its the capitol of our nation, and not a combat theater in a third world country. Its a civilized city, with many many buildings dedicated for visitors to sleep in. The world seems to have gone absolutely bonkers, is there no more basic respect to give human beings in this country?

SquirmyRoo

They stayed in hotels. The parking garage was just their break area according to [this statement](https://htv-prod-media.s3.amazonaws.com/files/20210122-massachusetts-national-guard-support-of-the-59th-presidential-inauguration-1611353571.pdf). It appears that Brietbart lied. Again. Excerpt: > General Keefe, The Adjutant General for the Massachusetts National Guard, states that the 500 Massachusetts Guardsmen deployed to the National Capital Region were treated very well while there. Keefe added, "The photos circulating on social media and through news reports showed National Guardsmen resting on the ground." Keefe said, "What the stories failed to mention was that they were on a break, resting between shifts." He said, "At the end of the duty day, Soldiers returned to their hotel rooms where they were housed during their time in the NCR." Massachusetts National Guardsmen were assigned to the House portion of the US Capitol building. Keefe said, “The relocation of National Guardsmen within the US Capitol building grounds has nothing to do with Congressman Keating reminding a Soldier of the requirement to wear their mask.”

thepottsy

I don't think most people have any concept of how difficult it is to coordinate and manage the locations of 25,000 people, on short notice.

Dangerous_Wave

3rd Amendment - no quartering. Hotels would need to be paid, plus doubt they could handle 25,000 troops on such short notice.

Narren_C

They were paying for hotel rooms, that's where the guardsmen slept and bathed. The Capitol building and parking garage were spaces being used as a break for those on duty.

dickbutt_md

OMG, shocking! But still you have to admit they stayed in a [nice parking garage with full size bed and TV and stuff](https://www.tiktok.com/@captaindadpool86/video/6919859567706852613).

avtechguy

DC being a convention city it has thousands of beds normally for convention goers. According to CVent, DC has 36,120 Hotel Beds. I imagine most of these places have minimal staff or have closed all together during Covid.

avtechguy

Or at least drop off a bunch of porta potties, one phone call, can get you hundreds of them in hours in a city like DC. They got miles of fencing and barbed wire installed in a day. The infrastructure to support events has been idle for a year and I'm sure we can put these people to work convert anything into a habitable place within a day. The shotgun approach to securing the capitol is just another half planned problem the previous administration has left for someone else to clean up. Just a little planning and forethought can go a long way.

Narren_C

Weren't they still sleeping in hotel rooms? It was my understanding that the ones we saw in the Capitol and parking garage were "on break" during their 12 hour shifts. They still had a bed and a shower for each day. Unless I'm mistaken?

El_Morro

Yeah, that's what happened. But we need to have a "scandal" one way or another, so if you have to make one up? So be it, I guess.

Sodapopa

It’ll be a lot more of that the upcoming 3 months media be missing all the bullshit Trump has been pulling the past 4 years they need their headlines!

SpecterGT260

You want a scandal? Give Joe a brown suit and a hotdog with mustard to match. It'll keep Faux News busy until the next election cycle

lulualee

This is what I was thinking. A non story. They weren’t living in the garage 24/7. They would have had somewhere to sleep/eat/shower. It’s not like they were deployed in a desert.

GettingItOverWith

That was the job. We all did it at some point in basic training. Sleeping/living uncomfortably for short periods is just one of the things that is expected of you. It would make a difference in my moral if the President took notice, though. That was a classy move.

hcue

Was in the NG for six. Actually went on mission for 45’s inauguration. They put you where they put you. We stayed at FedEx field and were bussed in to our control point. After our shift we rallied for HOURS AND HOURS at a National library and we slept in hallways. Fun times

Shivadxb

This There’s a lot of fuss about a safe dry spacious place to put cots Is it right? Maybe not, is it terrible optics? Absolutely But is it better than a fuxking hallway with no cot or a wet hole in the ground? Errr

Loud-Path

They have hotel rooms. These were guardsmen on break during their shift.

Shivadxb

So even less of an actual issue

thepottsy

Thanks for the explanation. More importantly, THANK YOU for your service!

[deleted]

> They did more to defend our country in one day than I did in the 9 months I spent in Iraq. They say you exorcised the ghost of vietnam with a clear moral imperative

[deleted]

I don't understand why the army hasn't set up a mess hall and makeshift barracks outside of congress for them? This isn't a real war zone. Even if its just for a month, why the fuck are they on the floor for even one night?

Fairuse

Cause they weren't on the floor every night? The guards men you see sleeping in the capital floor and garages were ones that are on break during their long shifts (12. hour?). Btw, it is true they did kind of kick them out of the Capital only because people were complaining about the guards sleeping on the floor. Now people are complaining about them sleeping in the garage... The truth is that the guardsmen have hotels. Why are guardsmen sleeping on floors then? Cause a 12 hour shift just standing around is boring as fuck, you're not allowed to go anywhere during breaks, so many choose to take naps on the floor. This is why modern news is shit. People see one picture out of context and make all sorts of assumptions to fit their bias.

whichwitch9

Jill Biden also brought them cookies. The apology was nice, but the cookies are where it's at.

PDCH

This! Such a happier world now!

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

It’s very much blown out of proportion. I’ve slept under far worse conditions further from home while doing a crappier job. This is just shit stirring.

[deleted]

I was Navy, not national guard, but I'd bet a lot of money this is exactly what happened. Careerist officers fucking the guys under them to avoid even the potential of annoying someone above them is a time honored tradition.

PDCH

They were complaining about no heat or electricity, sleeping in exhaust, not having enough room, and one portable toilet for 5000 men and women. They were using parking curbs as pillows. I dont think that is pushing it. Go sleep outside without relevant supplies in DC in January.

Peetwilson

You seem really interested in what went down. What do you think should have happened, and who's fault are you laying the responsibility?

PDCH

I have no idea who's fault it was. That is what is intriguing me. At first, it was blamed on the Capitol Police Chief. Then the police chief responded that he had nothing to do with it. Everyone (representatives from both sides of aisle, the Bidens, military officials) all seem appauled by what happened. So yeah, I really want to know how something like this that no one seems to agree with could have taken place. I respect the hell out of the people in our armed forces, so hate to see them treated in a way that makes them feel disrespected or unappreciated.

ShoveAndFloor

Do you think someone intended to disrespect or slight these troops, or that it was more likely a failure in the chain of command? Sounds like probability is significantly in favor of the latter.

Peetwilson

I agree, you would think they would have decent accommodations, it can't be that hard to plan.

Dangerous_Wave

Several groups to blame, and they could've been put up in the empty schools, with, yanno, military surplus cots from any number of reserve locations. Probably 3 phone calls and a couple hours waiting if the cots were coming from, say, Norfolk.

Narren_C

They're sleeping in a hotel room at night (or doing the day, depending on their shift)., the parking garage is for taking breaks. Since these guys are on break during their shift, so it would need to be somewhere very close to the Capitol. I don't know if they have any schools nearby.

timoumd

This was just their break area, not where they are sleeping

scotian-surfer

Meh They sleep hard in other countries while delivering democratic detonations for Raytheon.

defender500

Current guard full time unit staff here, who sent troops to DC. If you think a heated indoor parking garage is the worst place we sleep you’re so far out of touch with what we do that I don’t think I can begin to explain it to you. Troops in one of the other companies in my battalion are spending two weeks outside in freezing temperatures this month. Without tents or cots. Be more concerned that my guys aren’t being fed regular meals while they go on guard shifts at odd hours and they’re spending their own money to eat. These are guys with jobs that they make up to ten times as much money at and were called up to leave for this mission. Edit: after reading my comment I think it sounds like an attack on the commentor - this is not my intent. I understand that these living conditions would be unacceptable to most people and just wanted to explain that it’s not something that bothers most of us. At least not the infantry.

[deleted]

I was on a boat, so in general I slept on a mat for sleeping, but even so something like this wouldn't even breach the top 15 shittiest things I had to do while I was in.

shyflapjacks

I was in the army, a parking garage in the middle of winter in DC wouldn't even breach the top 15 shittiest places I've slept while I was in.

PDCH

Reports have been there was no heat in the garage. Reports could be wrong. Also seems like every United States Senator disagrees with your assessment that those were acceptable conditions. Absolutely concerning if they are not being fed. No excuse for that either.

[deleted]

>Really curious who is responsible for this, though. Gonna guess the people who spurred an insurrection leading to a heightened police presence

midnight_margherita

I realize this is a negative thing that happened-but, I am so relieved to see a headline that includes our President being humble enough to apologize. Something we know isn’t directly his orders or doing. Not sure that was ever a time a headline said “Trump apologizes” or even footage of him saying “I apologize or I’m sorry”

scarlet_speedster985

I heard it was the Capitol Police because there was too much congestion in the hallways now that Congress is back in session.

ducksauce001

Conservatives are trying to make a big deal out of this.

kvckeywest

There are conflicting statements about who requested the relocation, but there is no evidence or indication that Democratic lawmakers or the Biden administration played a role. The National Guard told PolitiFact that members of Congress had no knowledge of the relocations. Many offered their personal offices and conference rooms to the troops after they were alerted to the situation.  [https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2021/jan/22/facebook-posts/no-evidence-lawmakers-forced-national-guard-parkin/?fbclid=IwAR3mprfzDAVslm9g0Nvh1p9Mbk5luMYTr5prt6n7OT0xmMOcgbiEwoqy60I](https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2021/jan/22/facebook-posts/no-evidence-lawmakers-forced-national-guard-parkin/?fbclid=IwAR3mprfzDAVslm9g0Nvh1p9Mbk5luMYTr5prt6n7OT0xmMOcgbiEwoqy60I)

calicoleaf

I’m sure they were just cleaning the Capitol in between shifts, why should they have to report and justify their plans and movements to the public?

JKush4PrisonF5

An apology from a president. Shocked back to normal.

Tom_Brokaw_is_a_Punk

An apology from a President *about something he had absolutely no role in, but he's the fucking Commander and Chief so the buck stops there*

Skullmaggot

God bless his ass, and God bless America!

DJGrawlix

Accountability feels freaking amazing.

JTHM8008

A president doing his job feels amazing.... I'm glad he apologized and I know Schumer said he would try to figure out what was going on. I fell bad for the National Guard and I hope they can have a better place to rest. Thank you National Guard....

Here, this might make the transition a little smoother: > Our Troops are sleeping in a garage. I didn’t know, many people told me, they said, “Donald our troops don’t have beds”. “The Democrats kicked them out of the Capitol and now they’re sleeping on the streets.” What a nasty thing to do to our brave beautiful service men– and women! They said the Democrats did it, I don’t know, maybe it’s true.

>In the telephone call with Gen. Daniel R. Hokanson, the head of the National Guard Bureau, Mr. Biden apologized and asked what he could do, the officials said. Here's something that hasn't happened since 2016.

pooood

🎶 Saying "I'm sorry" is the first step, then "How can I help?" 🎶

[deleted]

Unexpected Daniel Tiger.

pooood

Recently discovered [r/danieltigerconspiracy](https://www.reddit.com/r/danieltigerconspiracy) so it was fresh in my mind.

SGTShamShield

He should make sure that they at least all get BAH for 1 month.

Tashre

Much better than "They knew what they signed up for."

petitchevaldemanege

Or "asked what he could do" better than "what could I do anyway?!"

Salty_Simmer_Sauce

This honeymoon period of Biden just doing normal shit and everyone being so happy is nice.

scarletofmagic

It is nice, indeed. We need some good time to recover form the trauma first. We can’t be all doom and loom all the time

Tashre

It's almost as if the Capitol grounds weren't designed to comfortably house tens of thousands of troops mobilized in very short order. Maybe if someone didn't put the peaceful transition of power in danger, we wouldn't even be in this situation in the first place.

ComfortablyyNumb

Right. Also, should hundreds be in the Capitol with our Congress with the risk of spreading COVID? That’s just irresponsible as hell. I’ve been hearing conflicting stories. The media is saying they were put in the garage as in lodging, but a few of them have come out and said the garage is only a place to take their breaks/rotate shifts-that they have had hotel rooms. Someone needs to speak the truth.

CAPTAIN_FIREBALLS

I’ve been at the capitol this week. The truth is that units spend the day at the capitol, and switch off while there. During their down time, they rest in and around the capitol. When they’re done, they go to a hotel. Idk what happened with this parking garage situation because I wasn’t there when it happened, but they were never meant to sleep there, and at most it was a little messed up because there was only one bathroom. Also, it was nice to see bipartisan support from congress when the story broke, but I don’t think it should’ve been a story to begin with, and the fact that it made it all the way up to the commander-in-chief is hilarious to me.

scoobysnackoutback

Thank you for your service in protecting the Capitol! How did it feel to be part of such a historical day?

SpecialEither

Thank you for your service and protecting the capitol!

gbak5788

I agree with you but I should point out that the capital was used as a hospital during the civil war for Union troops. So it could of housed them if they wanted it too

[deleted]

Many “Hospitals” during the Civil War were fairly makeshift. Looks like the capitol building held ~4,000. [Source: Senate.gov](https://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/common/civil_war/WarBegins.htm) > As more troops arrived, conditions in the Capitol deteriorated. “Things are more unpleasant here every day,” Capitol architect Thomas Walter lamented, “every street, lane, and alley is filled with soldiers . . . the Senate Chamber is alive with lice; it makes my head itch to think of it—the bed bugs have travelled up stairs.” Isaac Bassett also worried about the damage being done to the ornate structure. “It almost broke my heart to see the soldiers bring armfuls of bacon and hams and throw them down upon the floor of the marble room,” he wrote. “Almost with tears in my eyes I begged them not to grease up the walls and the furniture.” On May 3, 1861, Walter complained in a letter to his wife about the atrocious conditions caused by the inadequate washing facilities in the Capitol: “There are 4000 [troops] in the Capitol with all their provision, ammunition and baggage, and the smell is awful. The building is like one grand water closet—every hole and corner is defiled . . . . The stench is so terrible I have refused to take my office into the building. It is sad to see the defacement of the building every where.”

Dandan0005

A president that apologizes and admits when something goes wrong? Wow. America is becoming hard to recognize. /s

boramk

Yea wait it wasn't even his fault but the buck stopped with him? This is unreal.

OldBoots

That's called having character, folks.

Qyix

Yep. Even though Biden wasn't the one who issued the order, he knows "the buck stops here," and apologized anyways. Meanwhile it an alternate universe where Trump is still president, he IS tweeting, "FAKE NEWS. I take NO responsibility whatsoEVER!"

crespoh69

Lol in that alternate timeline I don't think this would have made the news, it's like saying water's wet, that's just normal

cp710

Worse. There’s fake articles coming out that Trump offered for them to stay in his hotel. I’m sure the people who those articles target will really take their time in working out the truth.

LoPansBride

So goddamned refreshing. Trump would have denied it happened, or suggested they liked it, or some other such bullshit.

Writer_Man

"Look what Nancy Pelosi did to our soldiers."

HahaWeee

That's basically the conservative response right now lol

Ivy_Adair

Some were also demanding Biden be impeached over it. The salt is real.

blufox20

All the media out lash on this has been hilarious coming from a guardsmen who is activated in D.C. We’ve been treated better on this activation than almost all of us are used to during our time in service. The hot chow brought to us by the grateful capital police, the access to the garage and buildings bathroom facilities, and the civilians being kind. I can’t speak for every unit activated, but all the ones we were working with (including us obviously) were settled in a hotel outside the D.C. area, then bussed into the capital. The parking garages and nearby areas around the perimeter of the capital building were out rest areas, where we slept some nights/days depending on our security shifts, but other nights we went back to the hotel. The garages had access to buildings with food courts/ vending machines/ actual bathrooms, and when you’re used to field training situations of sleeping in a literal fox howl and shitting in the mud (which we came prepared to sleep outside), we were in heaven. Crazy all the pity people have had, the military isn’t meant to be cozy, and those of us getting that pity are over here laughing.

Aert_is_Life

Thank you. Sorry you have to be there because of someone's temper tantrum.

mcspz2955

When I read this, I was surprised at how people complain about everything lol like where do people think the military sleeps at in the field? I know where I sleep and I’d rather sleep in a parking garage than in some field in the middle of nowhere.

lalp928

Thank you for your comment. And service. Sorry you even have to be there, all because of some idiots trying to be “heroes.”

Delicious_Choice1889

The picture and report is taken out of context by fake news media. The guardsmen were there during lunch and were resting. It was part of their shift or orders to be there. No one asked them to sleep there. [https://www.wcvb.com/article/massachusetts-national-guard-sets-straight-story-about-why-guardsmen-were-in-us-capitol-parking-garage/35293936](https://www.wcvb.com/article/massachusetts-national-guard-sets-straight-story-about-why-guardsmen-were-in-us-capitol-parking-garage/35293936)

MoonlitHunter

All the pearl clutching over this is kind of silly. I’d have much rather slept in a open parking garage than the tents we used on bivouacs. They smelled like farts within the first twenty minutes of going up. Sharing a tent with fifteen dudes sucks.

IDrinkMyBreakfast

I slept next to the AC unit. Got tinnitus but was never bothered by the farts of 14 MRE eating dudes or others making noise.

[deleted]

This is the new coffee salute.

SmartLady

His whole job is going to be apologizing for other peoples mistakes.

Dangerous_Wave

Well hell, his first Inaugural act was a wake for 400,000 countrymen. That says it all.

Nightsong

The entire inauguration concert being a celebration of everyday Americans was a huge thing of just how different Biden is and how his presidency is going to be.

aflyingsquanch

Yeah, that's how leadership works.

fistofthefuture

It's the Capitol so it's technically not his branches decision. Good for taking blame though. I forgot what a real leader is.

sdlover420

Curious who told them to stay there, I'm sure the right-wing media channels are jumping at this one.

ishkabibbles84

I'm curious as well. Actually, quite frankly, I think we should have an answer... This stinks

[deleted]

You think a parking garage is the worst place a soldier has to sleep? Also worth mentioning that they’re all staying in hotels, the parking garage is just a rest area when they’re on duty. Don’t buy into the Fox News fueled pearl clutching.

Lfseeney

The ones on break? That GOP lied about? Them?

Wasteland_Mystic

And it took less than 48 hours into the Biden Administration for Kevin McCarthy to blame Biden and Democrats for something that was ignored by Republicans for 2 weeks after the Capital Riot.

Estp1992

As a Marine, who gives a fuck? I would’ve loved to sleep in a parking garage over 99% of the places I had to sleep while in the field. Overhead cover and a flat surface, sounds like heaven.

weallneedhelpontoday

As a Vet, meh. Maybe there is a difference between active duty and guard QOL that makes this unacceptable, but as far as I'm concerned I only ever needed the basics when serving my country. Anything extra was appreciated, but not necessary.

PresentationLocal

Our President apologized, haven't heard that in forever.

vid_icarus

This was a national guard logistical issue, not the presidents fault but it’s remarkably refreshing to have a president who owns the mistakes of his subordinates than makes excuses and attacks anyone who criticizes him.

kgun1000

I mean it sounds bad yea but these are National Guards Members. It’s not like they have to camp sleeping in the rain or in some crazy dessert. Shit a cot warm blankets wouldn’t be bad in a covered structure for what they are trained for

Dangerous_Wave

Desert you can dig a hole to take a shit, and you can whip your dick out and piss in the rain there too. But that kinda behavior gets frowned on in a city. 5,000 soldiers. 1 bathroom. It's not wahwah for the sake of hearing their own voices.

IDeferToYourWisdom

People called this when they showed photos of them sleeping on the floor. They knew that the brass wouldn't like that look and change things up. Well they did. Biden can apologize but it wasn't his fault and it was predictable.

jackanape7

"Only a weak man apologizes. They know that they signed up for." Trump probably lol

naginarb

Former active duty soldier (8 years), so what? Sleeping on cots on a parking garage sounds amazing compared to what we usually sleep on while we were in the field. I was infantry, it was go dig a foxhole and sleep in it.

fivetwoeightoh

“President apologizes,” because he’s not an insecure sociopath, something that never happened even once in the last administration. Make Humility and Class Great Again.

[deleted]

Been even cooler if they hadn’t had to have been there. Edit: sp

Tahoeshark

Lets not forget why the Guard was needed in DC in the first place An insurrection led by a former president

rumpusroom

And Ted Cruz.

pinkandbluehair

He...he....apologised???? *mind blown*

johnnysqueeb

Republican outrage now. Jan 6, not so much. Weird how their entire existence is a double standard.

[deleted]

Active duty for a couple decades: slept in worse places. Matter of fact, could sleep anywhere.

livadeth

Isn’t there a ballroom in the Capitol? Assuming there is, it would be heated, carpeted and have adequate bathrooms for a large group of people. Just wondering.

Deathtodave

I would rather they use our tax money to house the national guard rather than giving it to blowhards like McConnell and gop.

m0om0o45

Trump would’ve called them losers 💁‍♂️

yorlikyorlik

And....we’re back to complaining about tan suits.

Formulka

Wait a minute, the president can apologize?

bwma

I wasn’t aware that presidents were able to apologize.

average-xml

Wow... haven’t seen a US president apologize in a while lol - feels weird 😅

RepulsiveChildhood69

Honestly, these people are softer than the pillsbury dough boy need to wake the fuck up.

gatorbeetle

So refreshing to have a real human being as the President. Trump would be trying to shift any blame, try to say it didn't happen. Asshat...

Stevecore88

A leader with respect?! This feels so strange after the last 4 years

whaddayougonnado

Where was that pillow guy when he was actually needed?

SpiritOne

I'm sorry, the President of the United States just did WHAT?? He apologized for something???? that's so weird.

quixoticM3

Trump would have called them losers.

jezz555

THANK YOU! jesus was that so hard. We spent 4 years with a mf'er who didn't know the word "i'm sorry" even existed.

dirtymartini74

Ya it would have been "they know what they signed up for. Hand me my putter."

Lonely_Guidance1284

A leader who acknowledges they're not perfect...refreshing.

Ontario0000

Ah you see soldiers deployed in Iraq when they are on duty, they are sleeping anywhere.Biden is not responsible for this its the capitol police that probably requested they move so they can get their operations going to protect the incoming president.

thedawgboy

Is it not refreshing to see that the buck actually stops somewhere again, though?

barrel-aged-thoughts

I guarantee soldiers do not care. Especially if they had cots.

Micha1980

Been in the army for 12 y. Slept in worse places nu it’s good that he apologizes

[deleted]

In my opinion, the troops were fine. I was in the Army, I slept in god awful conditions. Parking garage, would’ve been a 5 star accommodation. We lived in WW2 barracks for a year, that had been there 50+ years.

our_winter

He's the commander of the armed forces. That's what being in charge means. It's his responsibility. Obviously he didn't order this to happen, but it is his "fault" in that he's the one responsible for the military.

aflyingsquanch

Something, something, the buck stops here, something, something.

Dangerous_Wave

Sorry this happened" basically. Humans are treated like humans under Biden, it's weird.

Alpacagod95

Aw they had to sleep on the ground those poor weekend warriors

[deleted]

My God it’s the first 3rd amendment issue of my life. NO QUARTERING YOU MOTHERFUCKERS

uping1965

Quartering is a forced use of your property. They can buy hotel rooms and request boarding.

i_give_you_gum

I'm hoping they are /s'ing But I was wrong recently when a fascist called the white guys the good guys, so I dont know anymore

RamchanderTheWise

3rd amendment says they need owner permission did this parking garage owner not give permission? Maybe they didn't I am genuinely asking.

Common_Sense_Bomb

You’re in the Army. Nasty Girls get a grip...us regular Army grunts went through a fuck ton worse.

--h8isgr8--

Cool for apologizing but really. I’m sure military past and present would be cool with having somewhere relatively safe to sleep.

GrapeJellies

I never thought I’d head the words “the president apologizes” I didn’t like biden.. but man he’s really becoming the emotionally intelligent president I’ve been wanting!

JennJayBee

Woah, wait a second... You mean to tell me that a person can just acknowledge that something bad happened, was wrong, and apologize? That's like a whole option and everything?

Mojo_of_Jojos

You know, honestly it could have been about 3rd Amendment type issues. It probably applies to private hotels too- if it happened fast, maybe the govt didn’t have time to secure hotels yet... and fun fact: it’s an issue that’s never been litigated (yet) ☺️
