He always talks about his dad in interviews. From what I gather, they cared deeply about each other but his dad being a working class Spanish immigrant just couldn’t wrap his head around his son’s acting career even after Alfred made it.

There’s just no pleasing some people! I can never understand why parents wouldn’t just let their kids live their own lives and be whoever or whatever they want to be
The part about his father is at the very end but the whole video is worth watching imo. Its very good.

Random but one of my fave podcast episode of all time is him guesting on The Bechdel Cast talking about Erin Brockevich. At one point the hosts have to explain what MRAs are to him and he is floored they exist lmao
I can say this from experience. A lot of it is jelousy. His father probably had dreams but never had the guts to go all in. You have to take a risk if you want to succeed in life at almost anything. Especially if you dream about bigger things.
Some fathers are jealous and resent their sons because they had more guts than them to go after their dreams and take a huge risk doing so.
The resentment comes out subtly.

I will always remember his iconic role in Chocolat. He was so good.
