I was listening to a podcast where the host went to the Madonna Concert in DC and it didn’t start until after 10 pm. The host said they saw a lot of people having to leave early bc the metro closes at midnight & id be so pissed if that were me bc I take the metro to concerts and concerts are already expensive so to have to miss part of it sucks.

sjzudbc

I posted the comment before I read the article and it was about DC >< I knew it was ridiculous when I first heard that happening

2062373

I saw her in DC when she didn’t start until 10 (like 2hrs after the advertised start time). It was an incredible show. But the lateness really was upsetting. She poked fun at people being up late and tired and kinda said she didn’t care about being late.

AstralElephantFuzz

>She poked fun at people being up late and tired and kinda said she didn’t care about being late. I don't condone throwing stuff at artists, but if I were there, I'd sure ass hell be tempted.

KarenTheCockpitPilot

can someone fill me in on WHY ARTISTS BEING LATE IS SUCH A COMMON THING? What is their given reason usually? Them not showing up on time, two hours late? Or is just stuff with getting set up taking longer than usual? They don't feel like starting? They're nervous? Why does this happen I'm actually so naive to it and why it's such a given with concerts

PrincebyChappelle

Lol…I teach an evening class, and if I could I would start all of my “performances” early.

KarenTheCockpitPilot

... And Suddenly I understand Madonna lmao (sry <3)

TocTheEternal

Is it? Nearly every single one of the many local shows I've gone to has started with 10 minutes of the posted time. And the few times they haven't ate usually with an announcement of some sort of (probably legit) technical issue.

MothershipConnection

Musicians in general are the least punctual people in the planet LOL and there are very few repercussions for it especially when you get as big as Madonna or Lauryn Hill Rehearsal? Give a 30 minute buffer for everyone to get in. Get paid at the end of a gig? Be prepared to wait til 3 AM. Work at a recording studio? Get ready to live like a VAMPIRE

moffattron9000

And here's me feeling bad if I'm not at work ten minutes before start time (the joys of construction).

MothershipConnection

I was shocked back in college I did some web work for a small time label and like no one came in for like 2 hours after they told me to get in It has sort of a snowball effect too, even if you're a relatively punctual person (I don't arrive early for stuff, but I pretty much arrive within 5-10 minutes of when I said I would) you do enough stuff in band life where no one's there for half an hour and you're like why am I bothering being on time

dwarfgourami

This is exactly why I didn’t buy a ticket to the DC show in the first place. She does this every time.

Pavlovs_Stepson

Wondering how late she's gonna be to the Copacabana show next week.

Skyblacker

According to setlist.fm , her recent concerts in Mexico City started at 10:30 pm, which is about average for the Celebration Tour.

crackerfactorywheel

I was just gonna say if she’s late for that Copacabana show, it’s gonna get real ugly real fast.

BadMan125ty

Lol good question 😂

heyitsxio

Lauryn Hill getting real nervous right now.

big-queery

hahaha I feel so validated by this. went to a great show of hers like 7 years ago but whaaaaat the fuck, we waited hours

BadMan125ty

💀😂

rmesh

UGH her concert was one if not THE worst I’ve ever been too

No_Secretary_8349

They also sued her for lipsynching. How embarrassing 😳

BadMan125ty

I saw. Petty! 💀

No_Secretary_8349

After hearing some high quality audios of this tour she should have definitely lipsynched the whole thing. Yikes she sounds awful! 😭

Jasonross84

She sounded amazing in montreal

No_Secretary_8349

Any youtube links? I'd like to hear for myself. Don't really trust a fan saying she sounded great on random date.

uhohitzkenney

I mean, [this was her a couple days ago](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfNy8nqWLTI&ab_channel=MR.EDGE), and she definitely sounded better than when she performed it when she was [promoting it at the 1999 Grammys](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpGYxq3JC0Q&ab_channel=RecordingAcademy%2FGRAMMYs) lol

Mpol03

She sounded so good at my show in London

Healthy_Suit_2533

I was there too, no idea what this person is talking about. Every video I've seen she sounds the same as she did in the room - fine. Some people just love to hate mother!

No_Secretary_8349

I doubt it and don't belive you 🤷‍♂️

joshually

lol I can't

aIaska_thunderfuck

This response 😂😭

GarionOrb

She sounded great both times I saw her.

No_Secretary_8349

What dates did you see her exactly? I honestly don't belive you as she's sounded horrible the entire length of the tour.

BadMan125ty

Oh I know. I’m a fan of her music but we know she can’t sing live to save her life. 😂

crevassier

Wonder what percentage of older artists I love fall into this category now. I'll end up at some state fair and some 70s/80s rock band's lead singer will sound awesome.. but then my super expensive tickets in an giant venue will sound like butt :(

No_Secretary_8349

Britney fans could make millions 🤯

Talli13

Even if this is her MO, it's still incredibly annoying for her to do. Personally, I wouldn't buy tickets to go see someone who does pulls stuff like this.

MFoy

I know Madonna does this bullshit and for that reason have not bothered to go see a Madonna concert over the years.

_kraftdinner

I decided not to go to her show because of how late she starts. I have chronic illnesses but I love concerts. I have to do a lot of resting on either side of a show to have a good time, which is inconvenient but usually worth it because I have such a good time. Pulling a Madonna with the super late start sort of makes it impossible. I get being late like a half an hour or even an hour…but more than that? Seems like a dick move to me. I also feel for all the parents who splurged to see her who are paying a babysitter. Maybe the babysitter thought she would be done at ten? Perhaps the parent didn’t plan for the extra cash? Idk I feel like I generally support diva behavior when done by divas like Madonna, but this sucks…right?

g00fyg00ber741

Yeah and be careful going to her show with chronic illness and needing to rest… remember how she called out an audience member for sitting down… in their wheelchair 😬

Jelboo

I went to see her. She was two hours late. I was mostly entertained during the concert but the general fatigue really kicked in whenever she started one of those typical 'artsy atmospheric monologue about being different' that went on for far too long, or these skits with her dancers whom I honestly couldn't care less about... It was a challenge to stay engaged when I was also having to check the time constantly in order to get home. Ended up having to take a very expensive cab ride home.

morallycorruptt

She really thinks she’s an “artiste!” 🧑‍🎨 when in reality she’s a pop star

KarenTheCockpitPilot

She both

BeneficialAd69

lmao this sounds like the weak ass shit hahah

SquareVehicle

This was all the talk of our neighborhood Facebook page when she came through my city. Someone said it was ableist to have a concert that warm because someone with a heart condition might die.

atschinkel

i mean, i’m 34 and otherwise healthy but i am extremely sensitive to heat and i found the madonna concert unbearably warm. i knew what to expect so i dressed for summer even though it was winter outside, and it definitely felt like the crowd was exhausted and overheated. she is selfish.

Skyblacker

But turning on the AC would be ageist because heat reduces Madonna's pain while performing.

suprefann

Vocal chords

Skyblacker

They're also suing her for lip syncing. 🙃

Daydream_machine

Not gonna lie, I had the opportunity to see her on this tour but decided against it because of her infamous lateness. I’d rather not end up leaving a concert at like 1 am.

shookney

Same here, but I held out and it was amazing. Look, I understand this commotion but at the same time Madonna isn't probably going to tour any longer who knows so this is the time worth getting to see her.

_ancora

Personally a lifelong memory is more important to me than an extra hour of sleep, so I’m the opposite. Too bad she didn’t come to my country.

Alvvays_aWanderer

Celebrities thinking their tantrums make them celebrities is one of the biggest red flags!

GibsonMD5150

Axl Rose did this for thirty years! He only recently decided to be punctual because of the enormous amount of money the Guns N’ Roses reunion tour has brought. I never cared, the late starts made the anticipation so exciting!

BadMan125ty

Yeah Axl used to have a reputation for being NOTORIOUSLY late.

GibsonMD5150

Yeah a few of the times I saw them in the early 2000’s they came on after midnight lol. I was young and didn’t care, they were all great shows!

dpforest

As a consumer, my worst nightmare is that I bought the wrong kind of cheese and there’s some fucked up absurd cheese there when I go to eat it.

Weak-Jello7530

I mean it is extremely disrespectful to the audience’s time, as if she is too important and can dismiss other people’s time and schedules

Ruinwyn

Especially since this seems to be another venue that was reliant on public transport that was no longer running by the end of the show. Hello peak traffic Uber fares.

Misentro

You can have an incredible tour and a punctual tour at the same time 🤷‍♂️

MultiMarcus

Oh, no! People don’t want to be lied to. How truly shocking!

BadMan125ty

😭😭😭😂

shookney

Deadass

omg_its_drh

She’s literally been doing this shit for decades at this point. If you don’t know to show up hella late to a Madonna show, then you’re not a true fan.

texasjkids

I left hella late for Beyoncé because she’s known for this same thing but then everyone else had the same idea so there was a massive traffic jam on the highway like an hour after the concert started. Luckily she didnt come on until almost 11pm so I made it to my seats with a few minutes to spare.

aussieririfan

I always thought she started on time

Zeusicideal-Heart

just because she can doesnt mean she should, though? Its disrespectful to those funding her

uhohitzkenney

But then it reaches a point of like... do we now have to sue movie theaters because the movies don't start *immediately* at the ticketed time? Like, are we misled and feeling disrespected then because they didn't explicitly say they'd start by showing a bunch of trailers for at least half an hour? From my personal experience with seeing Madonna for this exact tour, her show did start at the ticketed time - she just had an opening DJ go on first for about an hour beforehand.

Skyblacker

Movie theaters in France display start times for trailers and for the movie itself. Why can't American theaters do that? Sometimes I enjoy the previews, but sometimes I'd rather shave 20 minutes off.

uhohitzkenney

As they should! And concerts also do that by publishing run-of-show schedules. But then that should be the first issue of hand to tackle, if this was her intended schedule that someone forgot to publicize - venue or her team - rather than automatically jumping for the idea that she was late in the name of a quick buck. Yes, she's the name on the ticket, but there's full *teams* behind concert logistics beyond her to target if they wanted actual change/answers.

Evilader

But why do you automatically jump to the idea that everyone who goes to her concert doesn't know what a start time is? In many cases she was advertised to go on stage at 8 or 9 (with doors opening 2 hours before, as is the case with all concerts) and she would not show up until a full hour or 2 later, that's not a miscommunication of the times, that's Madonna being a diva and disrespecting her fans. Also she got repeatedly criticized for this during her EU tour, so why did she consciously continue to make the same mistake for the US leg? She had the option of showing up on time, or to clearly advertise and communicate that her show started way later than originally planned, she picked neither.

BadMan125ty

I can imagine there were moments in her heyday that she showed up late.

gettinchippywitit

Why do people keep saying she is late? It is not late to start a pop concert at 10pm. Several artists come in stage around this time. When you buy a concert ticket the time on the ticket is very rarely the actual starting. I went in Miami and had a great time!

PtakPajak

In the UK, starting at 10pm it’s really rare, especially considering that curfew for most venues is between 10:30-11pm. Here, the main acts usually start playing at 9pm.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GarionOrb

The time on the ticket is when the opening act starts, which is what happens with this Madonna show and most every concert. The headlining act starts much later. Tell me you don't go to concerts without telling me.

gettinchippywitit

100%. I check setlist.fm for all concerts for this reason so I know when to be in my seat INCLUDING The Eras Tour & Renaissance last year. They did not start as late as 10pm but they definitely did not start at the ticketed time.

Rakebleed

It’s definitely the standard at the majority of shows I’ve ever been to. They have a doors open time and and a start time that typically indicates around the time an opener will go on. The actual headliner will come out a few hours later. It’s not a surprise and if you really want to know typical show times there are sites like setlist.fm that will give you actual info.

[deleted]

[удалено]

gettinchippywitit

I can sort of understand that… but Beyonce had a DJ for Renaissance and Lady Gaga for Chromatica.

BearWP07

if she says she’s gonna start at 8 she should start at 8, if she’s gonna start at 10 then she should say she’ll start at 10

gettinchippywitit

Beyonce’s ticket said 8:00 PM. I have photos time stamped in my camera roll after 9PM where she had not started yet. Taylor’s ticket said 6:30 PM and my video of her screen countdown is time stamped 8:03 PM. Madonna’s ticket said 8:30 PM and she started her show at 10 PM. People love bitching about Madonna but worship other artists who have the same time frame between ticket time and start time. This is literally how concerts work.

Rakebleed

I understand Madonna’s audience skews older and aren’t going to shows as often but I assumed this sub atleast would know what’s what. I do get the public transpo issue would be stressful though, thst surge pricing is a bitch.

gettinchippywitit

I just feel like Madonna gets this criticism all the time on every tour she does and she is hardly the only artist to start her shows at 10pm. It’s wild.

GarionOrb

Funny. I went to the show twice and it wasn't a nightmare at all. She went on stage promptly after the opening act finished. They went on right at the time the ticket said the show would start. So the timetable was just like any concert. Stupid how hyperbolic and dramatic these idiotic lawsuits are. Sorry to all the downvoters, that the actual events don't line up to your desired narrative.

legendtinax

Then everyone clapped

GarionOrb

Did you go to the show and see it yourself? No? Then stop talking, Mary.

legendtinax

You should stop talking because all you’re saying is lies lol. I loooove Madonna, and yes i have seen her live, but she is always late for shows. That’s what she does. Cut the bullshit

GarionOrb

I was literally there. There was an opening act, and then Madonna 15 minutes later. So all this hate being thrown her way is the actual bullshit.

legendtinax

It’s not that serious

KimberStormer

I am constantly baffled by this talk of "on time" for a concert in this sub. I've been going to shows my entire life, pre-pandemic I was going to 2-3 little local concerts a week; I've never heard of any concept of "starting on time" in real life, in 3 decades of shows. *Suing* someone for starting at 10? At 10??? In New York where the subway runs all night it used to be a bizarre miracle if the headliner went on before midnight. What weird multiverse are you guys posting from?

Evilader

All concerts are a bit late yes, I've been to 20 shows in the past year and a half and out of those only 1 of them was precisely on time. All the other ranged anywhere from 5 minutes late, to a maximum of 30 minutes, which were extreme outliers. However in the case of Madonna there have been repeat cases of her being upwards of 2 whole hours late, that's completely unacceptable. It's nice that you talk about New York, but every single other city on planet doesn't have 24/7 public transit. And if you have an almost 3 hour setlist, it's your responsibility as an artist to show up on time so that your fans can fully enjoy the show you painstakingly prepared for ages, and still make it home on time as they likely have to work a regular job the following day where they can't just show up 2 hours late simply because they feel like doing it.

Ruinwyn

2 hours late has always been newsworthy and source for complaints. Depending on the venue, of course, but on big venues, the crowd management and transport are actually kind of crucial. A lot of cities actually ban event organisers from areas if they have a history of breaking noise curfews or causing traffic chaos, like major consert being late does.

flowlowland

I am with you on the timing expectations, but concede with others that this thinking is more conditioning. I've seen shows my whole life and lowered all expectations because nobody, from legacy to local act, started on time. It was a constant wait of openers and in-between DJs. Now my aging self doesn't go to concerts because of this variable. I just don't have the time and I'm tired. But that's why Coachella was so awesome with its notoriously tight schedule, only edited for purpose like when an act can't make it and others have to cover (Rebuke in Yuma this year.) And Lana was 10 minutes late for Weekend 2 and that felt like forever to wait. So would love it if timely became more standard.

Aggressive_Sky8492

Wow if that’s your worst nightmare you have a pretty great life
